Carolina For the Kids Committee members and friends, alongside other UNC and Chapel Hill community members, came out to Pantana Bobs on Oct.22 for the annual Craig Woolard and The Embers concert to benefit CFTK.

While there was a small cover charge, that did not deter the crowd, who were eager to hear a popular band among the UNC campus and support this outstanding cause. The night was full of great music and dancing, a foreshadow for the Dance Marathon in April.

Campus Fundraising Chair Matt Hodgin mentioned that the manager of Pantana Bobs had said this was one of the most successful events the bar has hosted thus far this year. “This was the 11th year of the event and we were able to raise $1500, which is awesome,” said Hodgin. “Thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a success.”

By donning costumes and effectively trick-or-treating, the college-aged canvassers go back to their childhood and in doing so, they and the donators are reminded who the cause truly benefits: the kids.

Wouldn’t parents love it if instead of sugary sweets, their trick-or-treaters returned home from their Halloween escapades with a haul of over $1,800?

Carolina For The Kids’ Halloween themed canvassing event, Trick-or-Treat For Kids Who Can’t, yielded such results, as two squadrons of several dozen festively clad canvassers ventured out to nearby residential areas of Chapel Hill Oct. 25 and 28, “trick-or-treating” in honor of children unable to celebrate due to illness or hospitalization at UNC Children’s.

Canvasser’s knocked on doors, informing residents of CFTK’s cause, and collecting generous donations. The grand total of $1834.25 goes directly to the patients and families served by UNC Children’s.

One of the organizers of the event, CFTK’s Finance Chair, Hunter Cornelius, said that the event, one of CFTK’s most successful of the year, entirely met expectations despite inclement weather.

“The community always responds really well to a bunch of goofy college kids knocking on their door clad in all sorts of costumes, especially once they learn about our cause and why we are there,” Cornelius said.

Trick or Treat For the Kids

Tri Sigma hosted their annual Soup for the Soul fundraiser benefitting Carolina For The Kids on Nov. 12. The annual event is the embodiment of a major partnership between the two organizations.

While the number of dollars raised is not available at the time of publication, both organizations are excited about the success of the event.

Campus Fundraising Chair Matt Hodgin says that Tri Sigma has “been putting on Soup for the Soul in benefit of CFTK for longer than I know. It is one of our most successful and enjoyable partnerships, and we owe a lot of gratitude to Sigma for all of the support they have shown us over the years.”

Tri Sigma has been one of the greatest supporters of CFTK since the philantrophy’s founding, being one of the most involved sororities in terms of dancers and committee members. In fact, two Tri Sigma sisters, Caitlinn LaScala and Chelsea Krivanek, are members of the CFTK Executive Board.

Emma Hanmer, the current Tri Sigma president, says she loves working with CFTK because of the direct impact they have on the Chapel Hill community.

“Tri Sigma’s national philanthropy supports the Robbie Page Memorial Play Atrium, more commonly known on campus as the Pediatric Playroom at NC Children’s,” said Hanmer. “We love hosting our annual Soup for the Soul benefit dinner because it allows us to mobilize a lot of donations toward an amazing cause in a way that a lot of students are receptive to.”

Hodgin is excited to continue to build relationships between Greek Life. This year, his committee has started an initiative called the CFTK IFC-Panhellenic House Cup to reward the most involved fraternity and sorority with a trophy and a $1,000 donation to their philantrophy.

“We hope that this award will continue to foster a greater relationship with Greek Life on our campus, a relationship, that as we grow, can also go beyond or relationship with IFC and Panhellenic Council,” said Hodgin.

Do you love a good excuse to dress up, find a date and have a great time? For the first time ever, Carolina For The Kids hosted For(mal) the Kids. For(mal) the Kids was held in the Great Room of Top of the Hill on Nov. 5.

For(mal) was open to executive board members, committee members and dancers, which made it a great way to support CFTK and have a great time! CFTK For(mal) created an opportunity for a cocktail-like experience for anyone.

“It was fun to be a part of the first For(mal) the Kids because it was something new and exciting,” said Victoria Hamby, a junior and member of the Operations committee.

“It’s great that part of the ticket cost goes towards your dancer total, too.”

Megan Fullarton, Entertainment Chair, began working over the summer to organize For(mal) with TOPO and DJ NewYouth. Fullarton said DJ NewYouth was very popular among For(mal) guests and included many crowd-pleasing throwbacks in his set.

“We sold right around 300 tickets for the event, which I was really excited about considering this is out first year hosting a formal,” said Hannah Mebane, Fundraising Projects Chair. “In future years I would love to see this event grow and become a CFTK tradition!”

Caroline was admitted for surgery at N.C. Children’s Hospital because of her severe developmental delays. Her mother, who adopted her as a baby, accompanied her. The family does their best to meet the girl’s special needs, but their finances are tight. One parent always stays at home with their 8-year-old daughter, so both parents cannot work. The For the Kids Fund provided the family with meal tickets, making for a more comfortable stay in the hospital while the daughter recovered.
