MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTby Reid Leslie

I am honored and excited to have the opportunity to serve as Club President this year and look forward to working with our talented and committed Board of Governors, dedicated staff as well as with our im-pressive Committee Members. I am entering my third year on the Board following service on the Food & Beverage and Long Range Planning Committees. My main goal is to continue to strive to make ATCC the best Club it can be - as measured by the satisfaction of its members. I’d like to thank Julia McCallin, outgoing President for her hard work and dedication, she is going to be a tough act to follow. It has been a privilege to serve on the Board with her and I look forward to continuing to seek her counsel as Immediate Past President. I’d also like to thank Board members who have completed their terms and are rotating off, Chipper Pastron, Amy Lyford, and Barry Segal. While their counsel will be missed, we are also welcoming three talented incoming Board members: Pat Amsbry, Paul Catherwood and Vivian Rescalvo. We are fortunate to have Craig and his wonderful, friendly team - I hope you all realize how lucky we are to have such a great professional staff. They are what really makes ATCC such a special place. For those of you who don’t know me, my wife, Kris, and I joined Club in 1997 and we, along with our three sons, Ryan (23), Michael (20) and Robbie (17) have enjoyed it ever since. A couple of them have even worked here during college. In the time we have been members we have witnessed a dramatic transformation in the Club – from the physical plant to the tennis program - a transformational remodel of the Players Lounge, adding a wonderful gym, to a big improvement in the quality of the food – it really has come a long way.

You can often see me on the tennis courts, swimming laps in the pool, using the gym or enjoying a delicious dinner in the Players lounge. I look forward to meeting those of you I don’t know. Feel free to say hello and let me know your thoughts on the Club and how to improve it. Land Acquisition UpdateYou may have heard the good news by now, but on November 17th, the Altadena Town Council approved our purchase of the land from the golf course by a 12-2 vote! I’d like to thank Craig and all of the mem-bers of the Board of Governors and Long Range Planning Committee who have worked so hard to get us this far. I’d also like to thank all of the Club members who came out to support our effort. We still need to get approval from the County Board of Supervisors but I feel we are well positioned to do so. If we purchase the land, we will need to get a new Con-ditional Use Permit (CUP). Our CUP regulates our hours of operation and elements of our banquet business. Getting an acceptable CUP is critical. This will be a very challenging task and is expected to take 6-12 months. I will keep you appraised of progress going forward. We also are making great progress on the Master Plan and will be ready to share it with you in the next few months.

Don’t forget to make your reservations now for the upcoming holiday events – Brunch with Santa, the Gingerbread House Making Party, A Christmas Carol Dinner and of course, New Year’s Eve. I look forward to seeing you there!

4 Altadena Town & Country Club

Happy Winter Holiday Season. So much going on at ATCC, from gingerbread houses to Dickens dinners, Santa Claus to hol-iday carolers, food drives to tennis luncheons.

This time of year, we also see a changing of the guard (not the Tin Soldier kind), as we bring on three new board members and have elected a new Club President, Reid Leslie. Reid is no strang-er to Club affairs, as he was the face and voice of ATCC during our public meetings to gain approval to purchase the golf course land. Reid takes over the reigns from our former President, Julia McCallin, who did an excellent job leading this adventure over the last 12 months.

While I’m on the topic of recognition, I wanted to announce that Robert DeBlasis was bestowed the Swafford Award for outstand-ing volunteer service at the November committee dinner (see photo). Robert has selflessly served this Club for two decades, and is a very worthy recipient of this honor.

This year, we are trying something different for New Years. In-stead of a large affair that goes late into the evening, we are instead going to offer a fine dining experience from 7:00 pm-10:00 pm, with the opportunity to stick around and enjoy a pia-no bar style evening from 10:00 pm-midnight. With so many of our families involved in the Tournament of Roses, or with young children, this seemed like a better alternative. I hope you’ll give it a try.

In closing, I want to remind every member that this is your Club and you have a voice. If you have a suggestion, concern or com-pliment, please pass this information on to management or to the respective committee for discussion. You’ll find all of the email addresses for the committee chairs on page 3 of every newsletter.Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

FOOD & BEVERAGE COMMITTEE REPORTby Darren Held

DINING NEWS

Greetings of the season, club members. It’s time to get your holiday on! We have much holiday-ing to do – a brunch with Santa (yes, he is real) on Sunday, December 6, as well as the Dickens Dinner on Sunday, December 13. We enjoyed last year’s Dickens event—scrumptious food and wonderful interactive entertainment. I am hoping that Tiny Tim will be able to join us this year. Also not to be missed is the New Year’s Eve Prix-Fixe menu. We will not have a separate New Year’s event but I’m certain the special menu will be great.

Please check your calendar for the Heitz Wine dinner on January 23. Expect some great Cabernets from this Napa winery. Space is limited.

The new fall/winter cocktail menu will debut this month, featuring a new Darjeeling-infused Gin, Pasadena’s Stark Rum and Gypsy Eats Artisan Syrups - also made locally. Yes, please.

As you’re dining here this month, be sure to try the new ramen dish, the Korean Biminbop (hard to spell but so good to eat) and the Pork Schnitzel with spätzle. You will not be disappointed.

As the year draws to a close, we food committee members wish you and yours a delicious and spirited holiday and a gastronomically delightful new year.

Member SpotlightSacred Heart Tolog Varsity Team wins Sunshine League title for 2nd consecutive year after 30 year gap – ATCC’s Ariana Saigh and Camille Katz lead the way! Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (FSHA) had another phenomenal tennis season! For the 2nd time in 30 years, the Varsity Tennis Team, won the Sunshine League Champion Title. Now, they have brought the title home for a second consecutive year!

Key members of the FSHA Varsity Tennis Team were ATCC’s very own Ariana Saigh ‘18 and Camille Katz ‘16. Camille, a member of the Varsity Tennis Team since her freshman year and co-captain of the team, held the #1 singles position throughout the season. Together, they helped the team accomplish the victory of League Champions.

Ariana Saigh, also a member of the Varsity Team since her freshman year at FHSA, had an exceptional season with her doubles partner, Ruby Wellen ‘16. Together, they went undefeated in the league season all the way through two rounds of the CIF play-offs as a skillful and powerful set. This included a run-ning stretch of 41 consecutive match wins and 0 losses beginning in the pre-season, post-season, and throughout the CIF play-offs!

At the FSHA awards ceremony, both Ariana and Camille were honored with the All League Tennis Team Award, an award voted on by all the coaches in the League, to select the season’s top players. In addition, Ariana was a recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) for the 2015 season.

Over the years, both Ariana and Camille, have been extremely active ATCC tennis members. They have participated in the Tennis Academy, USTA Teams, and have taken private lessons from Liz Carpenter and Danny Juaregui. Congratulations to FSHA, Ariana, and Camille on another outstanding tennis season!
