Goodbye Marching Season, Hello Concert Season The high school’s Pride of Hanover marching band wowed an out-of-town crowd in Norwell on Thanksgiving morning as they played their last halftime show of the season. But sometimes that work winds up being play, like when the evening of our annual fundraiser rolls around. This year we’ll be spending the evening of Friday, January 30 at Laura’s Center for the Arts at the South Shore YMCA on Mill Street in Hanover; the theme this year is Friday Night Fever, and you have to wonder, how can this not be fun? There’ll be a mix of musical styles, sure to please everyone (maybe even some disco!). Entertainment is of course provided by the very talented musicians of all ages from the Hanover public schools. It’s an evening of music, friendship, and community, with a silent auction, raffle items, and a cash bar thrown into the mix, all to support music in Hanover schools. Goodbye

Marching

Season, Hello

Concert Season

The high school’s Pride of Hanover marching

band wowed an out-of-town crowd in

Norwell on Thanksgiving morning as they

played their last halftime show of the season.

The enthusiasm, musicianship, and devotion

of these kids are a joy to watch. Want to

know how they get to this level of

performance? Treat yourself to one or more

of the winter concerts listed to the left and

you’ll be sure to leave with a warmer heart

than you had before!

This is what we work so hard to support. But

sometimes that work winds up being play, like

when the evening of our annual fundraiser

rolls around. This year we’ll be spending the

evening of Friday, January 30 at Laura’s

Center for the Arts at the South Shore YMCA

on Mill Street in Hanover; the theme this year

is Friday Night Fever, and you have to

wonder, how can this not be fun? There’ll be

a mix of musical styles, sure to please

everyone (maybe even some disco!).

Entertainment is of course provided by the

very talented musicians of all ages from the

Hanover public schools. It’s an evening of

music, friendship, and community, with a

silent auction, raffle items, and a cash bar

thrown into the mix, all to support music in

Hanover schools. Mark your calendars for

January 30th, and get into the spirit of the

holidays this month by attending a winter

concert or two.

SCHOOL NOTES

HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUMENTALS

Matt Harden, Director of Instrumental Music

As the weather turns colder, we wrap up a very successful fall marching band season. The aptly

named "Pride of Hanover" entertained crowds at football games, rallies, Gillette Stadium, and

beyond. I am incredibly proud of

their work perfecting the field show

this year.

With the close of marching season,

we are busily preparing for our winter

concert. The Symphonic Band will be

performing a beautiful work by Eric

Whitacre called "The Seal Lullaby"

and will feature Mr. John Schnelle on

piano. We will also be performing

selections from "The Nutcracker" - a

holiday classic by Tchaikovsky. We

will conclude with our traditional

rendition of Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh

Ride." We look forward to seeing a

great turnout on December 18 at

7:00pm in the HHS Auditorium. The day of the concert, you can help support our trip to

Williamsburg by eating at Pizzeria Uno in Hanover. There will be flyers distributed soon so your

purchase can support our HHS musicians. Uno’s Flyer

Jazz Ensemble has also started swinging their way through the holidays and beyond. There are

some great charts in the works including works by Thad Jones, Woody Herman, Jeff Holmes, and

Vince Guaraldi, as well as some holiday medleys.

HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL CHORAL MUSIC

John Schnelle, Director of Choral Music

The singers in the choral program have been working in high gear for the past several weeks in

preparation for the upcoming winter choral concert on Thursday December 11th at 7pm. The

program will begin with Concert Chorus and Chorale singing holiday favorites like Let It

Snow and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. The middle portion will feature VOX performing

Benjamin Britten's classic holiday choral work A Ceremony of Carols and will showcase a number

of student soloists. This complicated, multi-movement work is set to several middle English texts

which thus far have been an exciting challenge for our talented singers! The final portion of the

program is the eagerly anticipated sing-a-long, and will conclude with the Hallelujah Chorus

from G.F. Handel's Messiah. We're excited to announce that in this final piece the singers will be

accompanied by the band in our first annual collaboration.

HANOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL INSTRUMENTALS & GENERAL MUSIC

Julienne Thornell, Director

Please join us at our concerts this month! The Winter

Band Concert on December 10th will include the concert

bands from grades 6-8, as well at the Jazz

Band. Featuring two hundred middle school

instrumentalists, the performance will be held in the

gymnasium from 7-8pm. And let's also support our

beginners who are progressing on their new

instruments! We invite family and friends to the 5th Grade

Band Demonstration on December 16th at 9:15am.

Last month, the 7th & 8th grade bands combined for a performance at the Veterans Day

Assembly. These bands will also be able to perform at the Providence Bruins game on Sunday,

February 15! Friends and family can join us, and take advantage of the discounted group

rate. And now, some exciting news for 8th grade band... 8th grade band members

participating in the trip to Washington DC this May will have a chance to perform at one of the

national monuments. Stay tuned for more info about these

events!

Our Band Website (www.bandhms.weebly.com) and Band

Facebook page will continue to have information and

updates throughout the year. You can also follow us on

HANOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL CHORAL & GENERAL MUSIC

John Schumacher, Director

The 6th, 7th and 8th grade Koruses have just completed their holiday concert. The groups

performed their individual segments and then all 160 members sang "Last Christmas" together as

an encore! Each of the groups also performed a short lunch time concert for their peers. Follow

this link to view a video of the Korus Concert!

The 7th grade Korus then went to the Cardinal Cushing School to perform a concert with the

Cardinal Cushing Chorus. Each group performed their own segment and then the 2 groups

performed a holiday sing-a-long together! The 8th grade went on a separate trip to Cardinal

Cushing for the school's annual holiday party. The Korus performed and then got to socialize with

the Cardinal Cushing students!

The Performance Troupe is busy preparing for WINTER JAM 2015 which happens on Friday,

January 16th at 2:15 pm for the 5th and 6th grade and at 7 pm open to the general public.
