Hi everyone,

Do you remember the controversy about a year ago over the UK’s aid to India? We were giving India aid of £280 Million a year whilst India was using £46 Million a year of it to fund their space programme for a mission to Mars. Now I’m not going to get too deep into the right and wrong here as one side of me feels that once a nation has decided to give aid to another nation, what the recipient does with it is their business. On the other hand I can very quickly see the powerful opposing argument. The thing that caught my attention on December 5th was NASA’s Orion launched atop a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex Flight Test. On the Orion Flight Test a two-orbit, four-hour flight that tested many of the most critical safety systems.

That test and future development cost to launch proper in 2018 is estimated at £12 Billion. With all of NASA’s existing infrastructure already in place.

I have to ask myself what India thought it would achieve. Given the distance and additional complexity of such a project. £46 Million a year, ambitious?

I wish India the best of luck with this as space research and development has always produced valuable ‘side effect’ technology.

I will be watching this space (no pun intended) with keen interest, have to say though, this is not going to be so much a ‘space race’ more of a crawl.
