• Formatting words:– For new text - set options under Font tab and type words.– For existing text – select text, then select Font option.– Set default font - Home tab, Font Dialog Box Launcher,
Font, select options and “Set as default”.– Set Automatic Formatting on/off - File, Options,
Proofing tab, Autocorrect options button, “Autocorrect” and “Autoformat as you type” tabs.

• Formatting paragraphs:– Use Styles to set line spacing and space between
paragraphs – Home tab, Styles group, “Change Styles”– Line spacing within selection - Home tab, Paragraph
group, Line & Paragraph Spacing, select number of lines, or select “Line spacing options” including Tabs.
– Spacing between selected paragraphs – Page Layout tab, Paragraph group, Spacing, Before or After.
– Indentation, tabs – Click Dialog Box Launcher, small diagonal arrow in bottom right corner, also tab button.

• Formatting with Styles & Style sets (new in 2007)– Apply styles in Office 2010– To view a document’s headings, identified by their
header styles – click View, check “Navigation Pane”.– To change style set – Home tab, Styles, Change Styles,
select a style set.

• Quotes – Quote marks – curly “Smart Quotes” in Word 2010 &
2013 unless you turn off “Autoformat as you type”, otherwise straight quotes.
– Block quote – Styles, select Quote or Intense Quote.
• Lists– Bulleted – Home tab, Paragraph, Bullets– Numbered – Home tab, PNumbering– Tutorial on spacing bulleted lists

Page Number, use Header & Footer tools for date, etc.
• Tables– Insert Table and select size or source.– To format table, select table and click Table Tools,
Design or Layout.
• Hyperlinks– Insert, Hyperlink, copy address from browser.

• Formatting text with images:– Add image – Insert, Illustrations, Picture or Clip Art …– Inline with text - Page layout tab, Arrange, Wrap Text,

Text, anything other than “Inline with text” floats it.– Crop, edit, border, effects - Select image, click Picture

• Disadvantages of Windows tablets over others – Fewer apps in the Microsoft store– Inconsistent touch control especially on desktop– Fewer accessories available, no 3rd party keyboards– Alternate browsers not written for touch control– Drivers exist, may be a problem– No notification center – No Android widgets, tiles not as good– Audio and headphones may not work as well.

• From PC manufacturer, if Windows version is still supported:– Dell , HP , Acer , Toshiba , Lenovo– From ZDNet article by Ed Bott
• From a friend with same O/S, version and bits, e.g. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, preferably same OEM/model, input your product key.
• Use Recovery Manager to create a disc.

• Make sure you have the product key.
• Backup all your files.
• Download drivers for all devices to CD.
• Do one of the following:– Boot into the recovery partition (try F11, key
depends on manufacturer) – For XP, go to i386 directory & run winNT32.exe.
It copies setup files to hard drive and boots into XP setup, does not reformat drive.

• Do you need a Windows Product Key to reinstall Windows ? – If installing from an OEM CD from 2005 on,
(Dell, HP, etc.) no product key is needed.– Use product key located on a sticker on
the PC or on the original package, 25 characters.
– If you previously reinstalled the operating system or installed a purchased disc, you can find the product key on the hard drive.

• Programs to find the Windows Product Key: – 14 Free Product Key Finder Programs
recommends trying Belarc Advisor first.– Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is second choice.
• If it finds a different Product Key than the one on the sticker on the PC– Large PC manufacturers use a generic key, it
cannot be used, use one on sticker.

• When Windows will not boot, to remove viruses, copy files:– AVG Rescue CD is free to download & copy
to CD or USB drive, creates .iso file to burn CD, has tutorials.
– Panda SafeCD if you have Panda Cloud & can read signature file, also creates .iso.
– Get IMGBURN to create CD from .iso file.– Get Norton Bootable Recovery Tool if you
use Norton Antivirus.
