of celebration and our community is no exception. We continue to have members celebrating anniversary milestones and joining the Chamber, which means lots of ribbon cuttings — more than 170 this past year alone. In January 2013, our Cham-ber-sponsored Sioux Empire Farm Show turned 60 and we’re gearing up for the 61st annual event next month. Our Convention & Visitors Bureau turns 40 this month.

We celebrate our successes because we are grateful for the businesses, organiza-tions and people who make it happen. But we need to continue to look to the future and to find ways to provide more success and more value for our members.

Celebrate the past and look ahead to another bright year

What’s next? 2014 will be another big year. Lots of developments are slated to open or break ground, including the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, SCHEELS Ice-plex and the Community Indoor Tennis Center, to name just a few.

And the Chamber will continue to find ways to make your membership invest-ment valuable to you. As we gear up for the 2014 Legislative Session, I hope you’ll take advantage of some of the ways we offer our members to connect with elected officials. Thank you to all of our members who took our annual issues survey — your feedback helps us prepare our annual platform to lobby on issues that matter most to you.

We are so privileged to live in Sioux Falls, the best city to live and do business. Thank you for all you do to make the Sioux Falls area a better place. I wish you, your families and employees a healthy and safe holiday season — the best is yet to come!

Sioux Falls is ending 2013 on a num-ber of high notes: Building permits for this year are setting records well above a half-billion dollars. Our population keeps grow-ing. Sales tax collections are up. 2012 was a record year for enplanements at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport and 2013 is on tap to break that record. All are signs of growth and a healthy economy, both now and for our future.

Growth and success in the commu-nity also means growth and success for our Chamber of Commerce, too. In the past year, we had a sold out Annual Meeting in October with Miami Heat President Pat Ri-ley as our keynote speaker and we remod-eled our office space, which allowed our staff to be more efficient. Our Young Pro-fessionals Network continues to grow and in August hosted the Crossroads Summit, a one-day personal and professional devel-opment conference. Most recently, we com-pleted our annual Fall Membership Drive and welcomed more than 80 new members.

State visitor center employees thankedThe Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors

Bureau (CVB) welcomed 70 South Dakota Information Center employees and guests to Sioux Falls for their annual year-end par-ty. The employees were thanked for their continued support to Sioux Falls. Informa-tion Center staff are some of the first am-bassadors telling visitors about what Sioux Falls has to offer for attractions, hotels, shopping, restaurants and other businesses.

The Sioux Falls CVB hosted a dinner at Falls Overlook Café to say thank you.

Employees stayed overnight in Sioux Falls and were able to visit several Sioux Falls at-tractions on Saturday.

The Sioux Falls CVB thanks the fol-lowing partners for their help with the event: Courtyard by Marriott, Falls Over-look Café, Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum, Sertoma Butterfly House & Ma-rine Cove, Sanaas, Spezia, Springhill Suites by Marriott, Washington Pavilion and Wild Water West.

Governor’s Conference on Tourism Jan. 22-23The 2014 Governor’s Conference on

Tourism will be held Jan. 22-23 in Pierre. The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bu-reau (CVB) encourages everyone in the visi-tor industry to attend the conference.

Speakers include Roger Dow, Presi-dent and CEO of the U.S. Travel Associa-tion, Rick Barrera with Overpromise, Inc., and Scott Stratten with Unmarketing. Reg-istration is open to everyone in the visitor

industry at www.southdakotatourismcon-ference.com. Each year the conference brings together South Dakota’s industry professionals to discuss the state of tourism in South Dakota, share best practices and look ahead to the 2014 tourism year.

For more information, contact CVB Tourism Sales Manager Alexa Steiner at (605) 373-2028 or [email protected].

Information Center staff are welcomed to Sioux Falls with dinner at the Falls Overlook Café.

Mayor Mike Huether flipped the switch to light up Falls Park on Nov. 22. The Park will continue to “light up” nightly through Jan. 5, 2014.

In addition to thousands of beauti-ful holiday lights, garland and lighted dis-plays, adults and children were able to en-joy cookies and hot chocolate, horse-drawn wagon rides, ice sculptures, music, a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and admire San-ta’s two live reindeer and a few zoo animals at this year’s kick-off event. The Sioux Area Metro provided free rides from downtown to Falls Park. The event attracts thousands of people to the city’s namesake each year.

The Sioux Falls CVB would like to thank the following kick-off event co-spon-sors: HenkinSchultz Creative Services, Hol-

iday Inn City Centre, Identity Marketing, Mailway Printers, Monarch Sales, Quality Inn & Suites, Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

The CVB would also like to acknowl-edge the following businesses for their in-kind contributions to Winter Wonderland: Hy-Vee, Ovations Catering at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, the Sioux Falls Arena/SMG, Sioux Area Metro, Sioux Falls Two-Way Radio, the Sioux Falls media, and United Rental. Special recognition goes to the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation De-partment and the Sioux Falls Police Depart-ment for their outstanding efforts in mak-ing Winter Wonderland a great success.

Falls Park will light up nightly through Jan. 5, 2014 as part of Winter Wonderland.

CVB celebrates 40th AnniversaryThe Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors

Bureau (CVB) will celebrate its 40th Birth-day on Dec. 17, 2013!

Due to the holiday season, the CVB celebrated its birthday early at the Novem-ber CVB Council lunch meeting. Former advisory council chairs, City Council mem-bers and several members of the visitor in-dustry attended the celebration. The high-light of the party was having Jim Woster, Chad McKenzie and Sylvia Henkin lead the group in “Happy Birthday!”

In 1973, representatives of the City of Sioux Falls and the Sioux Falls Area Cham-ber of Commerce agreed to create a CVB to be funded by the city’s 1 percent room tax and organizing the CVB under the Cham-ber’s structure. Today, the CVB continues to be funded via the 1 percent room tax as well as the Business Improvement District (BID) tax of $2 per hotel room sold per night.

The CVB focuses on selling Sioux Falls as a destination for conventions, meetings,

leisure travel, sports and events of all kinds. In addition to selling Sioux Falls, the CVB is known for four signature events: the An-nual Hunter’s Celebration at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport, the Biker’s Welcome at the I-90 Valley Springs Rest Area during Sturgis Rally Week, the Winter Wonderland Kick-off at Falls Park, and the Annual CVB Lun-cheon. The CVB also publishes the annual Sioux Falls Visitor Guide, Sioux Falls Visitor Map and Falls Park brochure, and manages the Visitor Information Center at Falls Park. In 2012, the CVB estimated that visitors to Sioux Falls had an economic impact of more than $226.3 million.

The CVB’s Advisory Council con-sists of 20 voting members, although ap-proximately 70 people attend the monthly meeting. The CVB BID Board is made up of eight voting members and two ex-officio members. Both the Council and BID Board are currently chaired by Chrissy Meyer with the American Heart Association.

L E G I S L A T I V E G U I D E

The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce asked legislators in Districts 6, 9-16 and 25 to submit informa-tion for the Chamber’s annual legislative guide.

The center pages of this issue of Chamber News shares legislators’ contact information as well as their goals for the session or what they feel will be a major is-sue. Several legislators also share information via Twitter and their Twitter handles are shared if submitted. You can follow the Chamber’s advocacy efforts via Twitter at @SFAreaAdvocate. The Chamber will also live tweet at legislative events related to the legislative session; look for more information and hashtags to follow.

Save this legislative guide and use it during the session to contact Sioux Falls area legislators. You can also find legislator contact information at www.sioux-fallschamber.com under the Advocacy tab. This legisla-tive guide will also be available at all Chamber legislative events.

Sioux Falls is included in all or part of seven dis-tricts (9-15); districts 6, 16 and 25 have also been in-cluded because they are in the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).

Another way you can reach legislators while they are in Pierre is to leave a message. For a Senator, call (605) 773-3821 and for a Representative, call (605) 773-3851 and your message will be delivered.

Advocacy: a membership benefitYour Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce ac-

tively engages government at all levels. A specific area of focus is the annual State Legislative Session in which the Chamber sends a lobbyist to Pierre to advocate for business interests — a great benefit of your Chamber membership. Further, we hire a contract lobbyist to as-sist in these efforts. These efforts are made possible due to funding support from Forward Sioux Falls.

Since the South Dakota Legislative Session is only 38 days in duration, it is imperative to be prepared in advance and to react quickly during session. Included below is a summary of the process the Chamber uses to determine its annual Legislative Platform and Policy Statements.

An important part of the process is the annual Issue and Advocacy Survey created by the Issues Man-agement Council. Results from the survey are com-bined with staff research and Issues Management Council discussions to help decide the direction the Chamber will pursue when lobbying during session.

As part of the platform development process, sev-eral Chamber committees and their leadership are or may be involved. These include the Tax Council, Busi-ness Transportation Committee and Business Educa-tion Networking Committee as they support the work of the Issues Management Council. In addition to in-put from the committees and the Board, the Chamber also seeks input from officials from the City of Sioux Falls, Minnehaha and Lincoln counties, the Sioux Falls School District and local legislators on issues impor-tant to them.

The outcome of this effort is a recommended plat-form, which will be presented to the Board of Directors to approve at its Dec. 18 meeting. Once adopted, it can be found at www.siouxfallschamber.com under the Advocacy button.

For more information about the issues survey or the legislative session, contact the Public Affairs & Communications Department; the contact information is included in the box to the left.

How to use the Legislative Guide

Stay informed during the legislative session

Throughout the legislative session, members will regularly receive a newly-reformatted electronic publi-cation — The Chamber Advocate — to provide insight from lobbyists about issues being considered by the legislature. The Chamber Advocate will also include news regarding activities of other governmental bodies followed by the Chamber. All Chamber members and employees can receive this e-publication at no charge.

The Chamber Advocate will be supplemented with a legislative blog and instantaneous Twitter up-dates. Blog postings will start after the Legislative Session begins. The Twitter account is active under @SFAreaAdvocate. Twitter will also be used to report on other governmental bodies.

Finally, the Chamber will implement a formal bill tracking process and summary document to keep mem-bers abreast of the bills being followed by the Chamber. Look for more information on all these communication efforts as the start of session approaches.

In addition to the Chamber’s focused efforts, an-other great resource is the Legislative Research Council (LRC) website: http://legis.sd.gov/. You can use this site to search bills by number, subject or the member who introduced the bill. You can also track and listen to committee and floor action. The LRC site also contains contact information for each member of South Dakota’s House and Senate.

Special thank you to First PREMIER Bank/PREMIER Bankcard & Best Western PLUS Ramkota Hotel for providing the Grand Prize.

Operation Thank You brings volunteers together with the im-pactful purpose to go out and thank the Sioux Falls area business community face-to-face for their support of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber, according to Operation Thank You Event Chair Stacy Wrightsman, Sanford Health. Wrightsman was one of 250 volun-teers who participated in the 23rd annual event.

“This year was particularly exciting because the Chamber is going digital! We announced that the membership directory can be accessed online and through a new mobile app,” she said. “Now members can get all the information they would like about busi-nesses, committee involvement, events, and more right at their fin-gertips.”

Operation Thank You a success

In addition to saying thank you to businesses, Operation Thank You volunteers could participate in a team-building scavenger hunt, which included taking photos, tagging the Chamber and sharing them on Facebook.
