I believe it helps to remember the words of the ever encouraging and hopeful, Teddy Roosevelt: “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” A couple of Sunday nights ago, I was painting in my studio, listening to an NPR program hosted by Christa Tippet: the subject was hope and vulnerability. “Hope is a function of struggle,” according to the interviewee, Renee Brown, who has written a book on the topic. She goes on to say that hope requires courage, which is born of vulnerability. In turn, vulnerability is “showing up,” and people who live vulnerably practice being uncomfortable because it doesn’t always go well. “Vulnerability is not a victory march.” We are putting our pride on the line, and if we fail, we feel we are nothing. President’s Letter

Dear PPWS Friends,

At this holiday season, when so many are “poor in spirit,” those of us with hope and courage feel especially blessed.  Yet still our own hope may sometimes wane, whether it is hope for better paintings, hope for more success in selling and/or in shows, or simply hope for brilliant ideas and images to appear to us as if by magic.  I believe it helps to remember the words of the ever encouraging and hopeful, Teddy Roosevelt:

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”

A couple of Sunday nights ago, I was painting in my studio, listening to an NPR program hosted by Christa Tippet: the subject was hope and vulnerability. This is exactly what Roosevelt called, “daring brilliantly.”

Program/Demo: Carol Naylor explained the supplies needed and showed us the techniques used for Watercolor Batik. Reveille, Myra, Nancy, Becky, and Laurel showed their completed paintings done in Carol’s workshops. They were beautiful and everyone was impressed. Carol will be offering her next one-day workshop on December 1, at her home, for $45.00.

Last month I told you about Diane Keaton’s challenge to try to do something scary every day!  Every time I enter a show or put a drawing on a fresh sheet of paper or even teach a class, I’m living vulnerably!  People may look at vulnerable people, even at me, as successful when those of us who do it don’t see ourselves that way.  With each “failure,” I have to fight against the loss of hope.  But what is the alternative?  To “live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”?  No!  I’ll not choose that route even if it’s safer.  I choose to “dare brilliantly,” and I choose to believe the words of Kahlil Gibran:  “The selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.”

In this holiday season, I wish you hope and the courage to dare brilliantly!

A Big “Thank You”from Barbara Coast

I have been meaning to write a thank you note to you all at the PPWS for your amazing gifts. It is hard to decide what 48 things on my lists I need to do right now, but another 50 pop up every day, so I want let everyone know how much I enjoy it all.

I didn't remember everything that I picked out, was chosen and packed up for me by the elves, especially Reveille. So, when I got it all to my room at my friend's house, I had to unpack it and look at everything! I opened things, and arranged them, took pictures of the massive pile, and looked at them for hours. It was like Christmas morning. Seriously! I always got art stuff from Santa Claus. Sniffff! I was so touched that you all did that for me (and us) that I have actually completed a couple of paintings.

I can't wait to try the Dr. Martin's watercolors. And there were so many simple things that I just needed so badly, like pencils and erasers, watercolor pads, paper, carrying boxes and portfolio, plein air box.....some things nicer than I have ever had before.

Photos of PPWS Meeting - November 14, 2012Program: Watercolor Batik with Carol Naylor

Past-President, Reveille Kennedy, conducted the meeting. Dennis Palsgrove spoke about the upcoming Signature Members’ Show.

Carol Naylor demonstrated “Watercolor Batik”. Becky, Nancy and Myra showed us their resulting paintings from a recent workshop.

To obtain the “batik” look, wax is applied to the whole sheet, cooled, the paper crumpled, and color applied again.

Above, Carol ironed off all of the wax, with the help of Becky Plack, to reveal the finished painting in the center. Carol’s WIP far left.
