Visitor, Volunteer, and Late Stu-dent Sign in Procedure

All visitors need to stop by the main office upon arri-val. All visitors, volunteers, and late students will log into the computer located in the Main Office. A pass or nametag will automatically print out. While at HPMS, all people signing in will be required to wear a visitor’s name tag. Students will take their late pass to their House office and sign in there as well. Please be prepared to show a valid ID.

Early Dismissals

If at all possible, please send a note in with your child the morning of an appointment. The student’s house secretary will write a pass to excuse the student at the appropriate time. This will alleviate the need to disrupt the classroom and your child will be waiting in the front office when you arrive. If sending a note is not possible, please arrive 5 minutes early to assure a smooth pickup of your student.

Attendance

Harper Park Middle School parents: we need your help! When your child is absent, please call the attendance line at 571-252-2822 or email at [email protected] to notify the school. For your convenience, this is a 24-hour answering machine. An absence will be unexcused if the school does not receive a note or a phone message from the parent or guardian.

Tardies

All students must be in their classroom by the 8:30 a.m. bell. Any student arriving to class after the 8:30 a.m. bell will be considered “tardy” and must sign in at the main office and receive a “tardy” pass. A parent/guardian should accompany his/her child to the office or send a note with the child when arriving late to school.

School Work Requests

When students are absent, the parent /guardian

should call the Absentee Line at 571-252-2822

and inform the school of the reason of absence

and when they will return to school. When a stu-

dent misses 3 or more days, the parent/guardian

may request missed school work from their

child’s counselor. The class work will be availa-

ble for pick up on the following day. Please do

not request class work on the Absentee Line.

Attention staff and Harper Park families:

This year again at Harper Park we will be having our annual Gifting Tree.

Our Gifting Tree will be filled with tags that allow us to support families

whose financial hardship leaves them without the means to give to their chil-

dren/families during this season of giving. If you are able to help these fami-

lies during the season of celebration, please visit our Gifting Tree in the main

office where you can select a gift ticket and purchase an item or donate money

for gifts/food to be purchased.

Please be sure all items are returned to the main office either wrapped or un-

wrapped no later than Friday, December 14th. Should you have any ques-

tions, please contact either Mrs. Lang ([email protected]) or Mrs. Negron

7TH GRADE

Dean: Mary Beth Woodford

As we enter the fourth month of seventh grade you may be seeing some changes in your student. Most are growing physically, academically, and socially at a rapid pace. With these changes, students need our daily guidance with decision making, time management, and organization. Be vigilant in monitoring text messages and other social networking opportunities that are currently available to our youth. These are adult resources that are usually difficult for adolescents to properly navigate. Please help by reinforcing our daily Harper Park motto, “Be There! Be Ready! Be Kind!” at home and in the community.

Continue to check Clarity, student agendas and teacher web pages for daily topics, assignment due dates, and quiz & test dates. Please do not hesitate to contact staff members when you have questions or concerns.

Our November class activity was postponed and will occur on December 21. On this date, we will hold our traditional seventh grade student-staff volleyball game sponsored by the P.E. department.

As always, thank you for sending us respectful and responsible students who are ready to meet the challenges of each school day!

Happy Holidays! Mary Beth Woodford, 7th Grade Dean [email protected]

The Best Gift- Support of Learning

Instruction in youth is like engraving in stones. –Colombian Proverb

As we approach this holiday season, let me wish each family joy, peace and goodwill. My gift to you is an open door, easy access and communication about issues regarding your child(ren) I would also ask that parents continue or begin supporting, in the strictest sense, your child’s education.

The best gift that you can give your child is quite expensive, yet it is already in your possession. Your time, attention, assurance, recognition and smile are the cost of supporting your child’s education. Let your child know that one of the most important things in your world is their ability to get the best edu-cation possible. Then be the role model for how that can happen. Focus on school work and completing assignments; studying each evening for at least 30 minutes, no matter what; reading and watching the news to keep current; learning something new every week and then explaining it to you; holding conver-sations about what is happening in school and life in general; recognizing/rewarding hard work; and set-ting your child up for success.

The sixth grade staff at HPMS are here to support you and your family as you team with us to make middle school be some of the best school years of your child’s life.

Counselor: Cherie Krisa

6th Grade: Congratulations to the overwhelming number of 6th graders who earned all A’s and A/B hon-or roll status for the first quarter at Harper Park! Next quarter I hope to have many students earn a place in the BUG Club. That’s Bringing Up Grades. To qualify a student must bring up at least one class’ grade while maintaining grades in all other classes. A grade of “F” will disqualify a student from BUG Club, while earning all “A’s” will result in an automatic placement on the list.

If you have not signed up to receive information through Clarity, please do so and take advantage of this method of communication with your child’s teachers.

If you would like to discuss any concerns you have regarding your child, please feel free to contact Mrs. Krisa.

English Department

In the sixth grade English classes, students are working on

story elements while continuing the reading workshop. In

addition, they are finishing up their personal narratives

about a “Slice of Life.” Seventh grade students are conduct-

ing research on the 1950s and 1960s to coincide with the

novel The Outsiders. For the eighth grade, students are

concentrating on poetry, research, and preparing for the

SOL writing test in March. The research is being done in

coordination with the civics classes as the students are con-

ducting research on important court cases in our history.

In the month of December, civics classes will be discussing the specif-

ics of the US Constitution. Our focus will be on the first three Arti-

cles, but the students should know about the other four, also. The

students will be required to memorize and recite the Preamble to the

Constitution by December 21. We did this last year and it warmed

our hearts to see the students working so hard to meet this challenge.

In US History 1, sixth grade, the students spent the month of Decem-

ber learning about the three Colonial Regions – New England, Middle

and Southern Colonies. They will learn about the general way of life

for the colonists, how the environment impacted the food, shelter and

profits of the colonists and the social etiquette of the three regions,

including the differing religious beliefs. Several of the historical doc-

uments that were investigated in civics during the month of Novem-

ber will be discussed in this sixth grade unit.

Seventh Grade, US History 2, will wrap up their Immigration unit

and move on to the Spanish American War and the impacts this win

had on our view of the world or how the world viewed us as a world

power. We hope to finish WWI before Winter Break. WWI will in-

clude topics on Allies and Axis Powers, reasons the US got involved in

WWI, impacts on the home front and trench warfare.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

In 8th grade science we will begin our unit on Energy and Energy

Resources. During this unit, we will learn about the different forms of

energy and how energy is changed from one form into another. We will

also begin our study of Electricity and Magnetism. Students will explore

electric current and circuits as well as electromagnetism.

In 7th grade life science students are using microscopes to explore

the world of cells. Students have built cell models and will be studying

cellular processes such as diffusion, photosynthesis, and cellular res-

piration.

In 6th grade science we have just finished studying matter.

We will be studying the properties of water next.

MATH DEPARTMENT

Greetings from the HPMS Math Department!

NEW NEWS: There are several websites

online that can help re-enforce math concepts on

all grade levels: Khan Academy, Coolmath,

AAA math. Mathdrills.com has numerous worksheets with an-

swer keys.

Students will continue to have math homework every night.

Homework serves as valuable practice on concepts covered in

class. Homework is meaningful and should be completed on

the day it is assigned. This will allow students to seek help

during their resource if they do not understand the homework

assignment.

DECEMBER 2012 HOME OF THE HURRICANES PAGE 25

Harper Park Middle School is participating in the Box Tops for Education program!

Thanks to all the students and parents who submitted Box Tops for the November 1, 2012 collection date. We collected over 1,123 Box tops – that’s $112 raised that goes directly to the Harper Park Middle School PTA to support and enrich our children’s school environment.

Our next collection date is March, 2013.

Collecting and submitting Box Tops is a great way to earn additional funds for the PTA – funds that di-rectly support our student activities. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents. Please have your students give them to their homeroom teachers. We have a large collection box in the front office.

Thanks and Keep Collecting!

1. CLIP Box Tops! Find Box Tops coupons on hundreds of your favorite products. Each Box Top cou-pon is worth 10¢¢ for our school.

2. Send Box Tops to school! Turn in your Box Tops coupons to your child's homeroom teacher. Our school will collect the Box Tops and send them to Box Tops for Education.

3. Sign up online! Sign up at boxtops4education.com to support our school and see over 100 partici-pating retail stores.

If you have any questions, please contact your Box Tops Coordinator:

Christine Yeganeh at [email protected]

PTA NEWS

Teacher Grants is one of our annual PTA programs and we’re pleased to an-nounce that we awarded 19 teacher grants to HPMS faculty members for a total of $1900! The PTA funds will be used to purchase teacher educational materials, classroom timers, mentor texts, experiment materials, a deskjet printer, tree seedlings, student books, Ipad applications as well as funding for FACS + afterschool programs. In addition to our funds, our teachers will happily accept your donations of sewing and craft supplies as well as athlet-ic supplies such as gently used basketball and soccer balls. Please bring your donations to the PTA desk in the main office.

On Tues. Dec 18th, the PTA will host our Annual Cookie Exchange for Faculty and Staff. Please bring your donation of 3-4 dozen cookies to the main of-fice by 10am on Dec. 18th. Volunteers to staff this fabulous event are also needed. Please contact Arlene Thorpe at [email protected] to vol-unteer. We have been successful in fundraising at Giant! Please remember to des-ignate Harper Park as your school of choice in all your store bonus pro-grams. Both Target and Harris Teeter have Harper Park on their lists. We appreciate your support. And we are collecting Box Tops! Please send your Box Tops to school with your student or deposit them in the Box Top box on the PTA desk in the office.

Welcome DASH Dads! We’re glad to have you! Contact Rae Jobson at [email protected] to volunteer. Finally, we’ll continue hosting Dinner Nights Out! Chick-Fil-A was a wonder-ful success and Pei Wei is out next adventure!

Our next PTA meetings are Thurs Dec 13th at 9am and Thurs Jan. 10th at

9am. You’re welcome to join us. For more information on the PTA, please

contact Kathleen Castro, President, at [email protected].
