If you need further proof that community spirit is alive and well across north Idaho, look to the recently reopened Frontier Ice Arena. Despite a catastrophic roof collapse that took four years to recover from, the rink is now back

up and running thanks to the generosity of local businesses and countless volunteers. When the roof collapsed, insurance was not able to cover the entire rebuild. The Kootenai Youth Recreation Organization (KYRO), who runs the rink, would have to raise an additional $800,000 to get the building back up and ready for skaters. STCU and Frontier communications stepped up with major gifts as did countless other local businesses and community members, all giving what they could. Even the lobby furniture was donated by The Wine Cellar. Those who might not have been able to contribute financially helped in other ways by making runs to the dump, helping install flooring and glass, and getting the rink ready for opening day.

What you see now is a fully-enclosed arena with an NHL sized rink and a few NHL connections. The netting was bought from the Edmonton Oilers and the glass surrounding the rink came from the RBC Center, home of the Carolina Hurricanes. There are hockey associations from beginners all the way to Compete Hockey Academy which is run by former NHLer Cam Severson who helps teens realize their dreams of playing minor league hockey and beyond. Tournaments are being held on a regular basis, bringing teams from across the west and Canada which helps pump additional dollars into the local economy. Local figure skaters use the ice and there are learn to skate and learn to play hockey classes taught weekly for all levels of skaters. The rink can also be rented out for corporate events or birthday parties.

While the rink is up and running, there are still improvements to be made. Future donations and sponsorships will go towards updating the concession stand, adding stadium seating and electronics, and improving the locker rooms. KYRO has set a goal of adding a second covered rink to the facility in just five years and will again need the communities help to reach its goal. The organization relies completely on donations and revenue from programs. Questions regarding donations, sponsorships, rentals, and other information can be directed to [email protected].

Take Your Multivitamin to Control DiabetesIT CAN MEAN MORE THAN LITTLE PROTECTION AGAINST THE COMMON COLD

For people with diabetes, taking a multivitamin every day can mean much more than a little protection against the common cold.

Research is finding that multivitamins can be the first line of defense against many different types of infections, including

respiratory infections and influenza.

“Once a person with diabetes gets an infection, it’s much harder for them to get rid of it, and it can lead to dire consequences, even death,” says Registered and Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist Debra Spector. “And since some diabetic patients don’t normally respond well to treatment, prevention is key.”

Taking a special diabetes

multivitamin—usually found in the diabetes section of a drugstore, not the vitamin section—allows a diabetic person to be proactive with their health, and avoid nutrient deficiencies that can lead to problems.

The year-long study among 130 patients, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that the incidence of infection was much lower among diabetics who took a multivitamin versus those who did not.

Infection occurred in only 17 percent of diabetic patients who took a multivitamin versus the 93 percent who took a placebo. The study also found that regular multivitamin usage reduced the rate of minor urinary tract and gastrointestinal infections in people with diabetes.

Because of the nature of the disease, it’s not uncommon for diabetics to experience nutrient deficiencies. Diabetes medications and frequent urination can lead to the loss of vital nutrients that protect the body.

“Since there are many health risks that can result from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, I encourage my diabetic patients to find a multivitamin supplement with more potent levels of important nutrients to meet their needs,” says Spector. “It should contain Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), an important nutrient that most ‘regular’ multivitamins do not have. I like Multi-betic Diabetes Multi-Vitamin since it has 23 important nutrients, including ALA, designed to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels, support vision and promote nerve function.”

Is it REALLY December already? Sure enough! The holiday shopping/family gathering/holiday party/Christmas music season is in full swing! One thing I have learned these last few years during December is that, with all of

the hustle and bustle, even our most prepared and organized customers realize at the last minute that they missed some people when making their gift lists! Here are a few of the most common, and some ways The Coeur d’Alene Olive Oil Company can help!

• Your employees or co-workers - It’s easy to remember your customers and those that refer business to you, but lots of people forget the ones they work with and the ones that work for them! A bottle of Coeur d’Alene Olive Oil Company Olive Oil etched with your company logo and a message declaring your appreciation or well wishes for the holidays is a great way to say thank you to your employees this time of year. We also have tons of fabulous gourmet products, most are produced in the Northwest, for your co-workers or that white elephant exchange at the Christmas Party.

• The hosts and hostesses of all of those holiday parties - While wine is a welcomed gift for many hosts and hostesses, I love to bring something that is different and memorable that complements all that wine everybody else brought to the party! We have a great line of dessert, bread, and frozen drink mixes (just add wine!!) from Old World Gourmet that arrived just in time to stock up for the holiday party season. Grab a few extra for those last minute invitations!

• Those people you love that live across the country - Send a gourmet care package that will remind them of you long after the holidays have passed! We ship anywhere in the continental U.S., but the last day to ship regular ground to arrive by Christmas is a little early this year – Friday, December 14th for East Coast and Midwest deliveries, and December 19th for the West Coast.

• Hair experts, massage magicians, nail artists, etc. - Tis the season to look relaxed and pretty, and these people are the ones that help you pull it off! In addition to your regular tip, spoil these folks just a little bit with a Mini Gift Set (a holiday exclusive) filled with 4 of our mini bottles of olive oil. If you’re feeling extra generous, add a gift card so they can get more of their favorite varieties!

• Teachers and daycare staff - Winter is a great time to thank those people who have such a great impact on your babies! We carry Mountain Madness Soap Company soaps and body butters – both are fantastic treats.

There are plenty of things that can cause a great deal of stress during the holidays, but shopping for the people on your list (and maybe a few you forgot about!) shouldn’t be one of them! We can help you put together great gifts for everybody on your list, including those really hard to shop for people.

All of us at the Coeur d’Alene Olive Oil Company wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Cheers!

McCarty’s Sacro-EaseA CURE FOR A BAD BACK

Do you have a tired back? Do you have a bad back or do you just drive/sit for many hours a day. We have the cure – it is an insert into a car seat or office chair. Take it with you anywhere – use it anywhere.

The Sacro Ease will fix your broken down car seat, it will enable you to sit comfortably at church, athletic events, restaurants~virtually anywhere you sit we have a seat that can be bent for your back. Driving and sitting is one of the worst things we can do to our body. When we are not properly supported the back naturally goes into a “c” curve – the proper curve is an “s” Curve. When properly supported your hips/tailbone are positioned so that your lumbar area curves in toward your stomach and the Sacro Ease will fill in the void in the curve in your spine. You do not have to think about how you sit – just lean back and enjoy the ride! The rubber supports on the inside of the fabric are wrapped around a steel frame that is bent for your back. When you are driving on our awful roads the road vibration actually compresses your vertebrae and smashes your discs. When this happens a message is sent to your brain that you are in pain and this causes fatigue.

If you do not have a bad back, if you have a new car – our product is still effective. I can prevent your back pain. If your new car’s seats are not comfortable the Sacro Ease can fix the issue and stop you from losing money by getting rid of your new ride. Are you seeing a physical therapist, chiropractor or massage therapist – the Sacro Ease will help maintain what they are accomplishing!

So by having a Sacro Ease you are supported, have less fatigue and will help your back stay healthy! We have models for virtually any vehicle or piece of machinery. If we do not have one in stock we can make one specifically for you as they are all made right in Kootenai County. For 72 years we have been making posture correction products for the entire world.

Made of durable automotive grade fabric – we warranty our products for 5 years – no proration – the entire 5 years are covered. Simply bring to the factory and we will repair or replace your unit! The product is very affordable – ranging from $100 to 350 we DO have one that will fit your needs!

“It’s just a matter of the home owner’s style and preferences” said Hearth Specialist John Hoffman, “Whatever the customer’s needs RDI Stove and Fire-place has the products and know-how to get the job

done. We have created some flat out amazing fireplace and hearth areas.”

The top-notch company is considered to be a leader in the hearth industry and can supply the entire package. RDI offers Free In-Home Estimates — happily going out to your home to give you a precise written bid. When you decide to buy, the installers are extremely careful and respectful with your most valued possession: Your home.

“All of our installers are well trained, professional and among the very best in our area,” Hoffman said. And, if you are replacing an older wood stove, you may also qualify for and Idaho state tax credit of 40 percent of your installation costs the first year and 20 percent of your installation cost each year for the next three years- a total deduction of 100 percent over the four year period.

“It’s a great program you get 100 percent of the investment back. That state incentive is pretty nice,” said Hoffman.

The total cost—including hearth pad, stove, chimney sys-tem and installation—applies toward the credit. To get the Idaho credit, just take your old stove to the transfer center on Ramsey Road and they will give you the documentation to give the state, Hoffman advised. John also invited anyone who might need a little more information on these programs to give him a call at 208.762.9857, adding that he will be happy to help.

RDI has several lines of wood and pellet stoves that qualify for the credits, as well as several different brands of High Effi-ciency Natural Gas and LP stoves from which to choose. If you have a small area that could use a ‘little extra heat’ and some ambiance they also carry an extensive line of electricfireplaces and stoves.

There is certain to be a style to fit your design preferenceand need. RDI Stove and Fireplace has a cozy showroomlocated at 9443 North Government Way in Hayden and is openMonday-Thursday, 7am-5pm, Friday, 7am-4pm and on Satur-days from 10am-3pm. They would like to invite you to stop by and see and feel some of the options they have to offer.

Decorating can be one of the most exciting times during your experience as a homeowner. Not only are you creating the essence of your home, you are also adding your very own personal touch and style.

One of the easiest ways to add unique spice to an ordinarily drab room— incorporate exceptional artwork.

“Many of my clients are simply amazed at how effective a colorful painting can be at bringing new life to a room that has become tired,” says Matthew Johnston, an artist known for his vibrant Tall Tulips paintings (talltulips.com).

However, as easy as it sounds, purchasing and hanging a painting on the center of the wall isn’t going to cut it in most cases. Johnston offers his advice to ensure your next painting purchases work with your room rather than against it: Large High-Traffic Rooms

For family rooms, living rooms and rooms off the kitchen, Johnston recommends figurative diptych paintings to create a story within each area. Diptych paintings consist of two separate panels that hang together and work as one.

“In my figurative diptych paintings, each figure has their own physical space, yet they are a couple,” says Johnston. “Their face is cropped, and viewers can imagine themselves as being in the painting. The viewer has to look to other parts of the painting to imagine a story...each individual person can create a different story for the painting.” Awkward Wall Spaces

For stairways, long hallways and between windows, Johnston recommends using a tall, narrow painting, like his Tall Tulips.

“They are perfect for hanging up a staircase,” says Johnston. “You can hang the Tall Tulips at different heights following the risers up the stairs; a great look for a difficult space.”

This style of painting also works well because they are bright and don’t require ideal lighting. Focal Wall Areas

Spaces like the area over a fireplace will get a lot of attention from pass-ersby. Hanging your prized piece is the perfect step for these spots.

“Many of my clients choose my large floral paintings,” says Johnston. “Oftentimes, they will hang these on a wall which faces the front door...to make an impression when first walking in the home.”

According to consumer data from 2011, 87 per-cent of polled shoppers believe that small busi-nesses are a critical component to economic health in the U.S. That 87 percent is spot-on.

Small businesses employ nearly half of all private-sector workers and provide 42.9 per-cent of the private-sector payroll. In addition to generating jobs, thriving locally owned estab-lishments raise real estate values and stimulate entire communities.

Small businesses have always helped local communities thrive. Because local businesses recycle money through the community and create jobs, they boost the economy more than chain stores or retailers that aren’t locally owned. They are typically more supportive of local non-profits, arts, youth sports and other organizations.

Data from the American Express Independent Retail Index suggest that strong local busi-nesses even lead to greater property values for homeowners. The report discovered the home values in 27 different neighborhoods with booming independent businesses outper-formed their broader markets by 50 percent over the last 14 years.

So while shopping large retail stores or online can be convenient, we encourage you to take a moment to consider shopping local. These business owners are friends and neighbors

and the jobs they create help keep the local economy strong. Owners are passionate about their business and providing you the consumer with a quality product at a fair price.

We realize it is not always possible to purchase what you need locally, so we merely ask you to Think Local, Buy Local and Deal It Local!

While home prices are still 24% lower than at their peak in 2007, most experts agree that the housing market is

very close to bottoming out, and if you have considered buying a home, now is the time. According to real estate website Zillow, 30-year fixed interest rates are hovering around the 3.5% mark and home values were up in the second quarter over last year. That’s the first year over year increase since 2007. “The main reason

interest rates remain so low is the Fed wanting to keep the economy stimulated, and the main way to do that is give people incentives to buy,” said Mortgage Broker Robyn Garlich-Baird of Sierra Pacific Mortgage Company in Spokane. Garlich-Baird says her workload has nearly doubled this year as people take advantage of the stellar rates for purchase or refinance.

Paula Kamp, owner of Remax representing the greater North Idaho region from St. Maries to Canada and Post Falls to Silver Mt/Kellogg agrees. “There is no better retirement program than a 3.25% interest rate for the next 30 years. When else in history have you been able to secure a home mortgage at this rate?” said Kamp. Kamp believes the local market has bottomed out but also cautions people about jumping at the first home that peaks their interest. “Be sure to take time to find the right location. With so many properties available and more to come on the market you should take time to research and visit all the areas that appeal to you,” said Kamp.

If you don’t have a real estate agent lined up, you can begin your search on one of the numerous listing websites available. Trulia.com and Zillow.com offer a quick glance at

properties, and Realtor.com is also a good resource that includes more detailed information, accurate listing prices, and local agents. In addition, remax.com or global.remax.com allow you to search property worldwide including demographics and community information as well as local sales and current listings. All sites allow you to narrow your search by price, square footage, location, beds/baths, school district and other important factors.

Remember, once you’ve found the right realtor, they can show you any property you are interested in, even if it’s with a different company.

Even if you don’t plan on buying tomorrow, Mortgage Broker

Garlich-Baird highly recommends getting pre-approved for a loan. “A lot of people find that dream home, and by the time they go to get approved someone else has already come in with an offer,” said Garlich-Baird. When seeking pre-approval, have your finances in line including pay stubs, W2s, tax returns, and bank statements. Your credit score is also

very important in securing the best rates. Know your score before you begin and be sure to avoid late payments or opening large lines of credit right before or during your approval process. During this process you will get an idea of your monthly payment, how much money you will need to put down as well as other upfront costs. This will help narrow your search to a certain price range, and show you how much you’ll need to save before closing.

Why Should You Consider an Umbrella Policy?REDUCE RISKING YOUR FAMILY’S FINANCIAL FUTURE

You’ve worked for years to be where you are—to save for retirement, own a nice home, a car or two, maybe even a boat. These aren’t just markers of a successful life; they are your family’s financial future and

security. All of it could be at risk as a result of an accident or liability lawsuit.

Accidents Do HappenWe try to avoid them, but accidents do happen. If you were to cause a major auto accident involving major property damage and/or extensive injuries to other parties, your hard-earned assets could be at risk. The cost of the property damage, injuries to other parties, and/or subsequent lawsuits could quickly and easily exceed the limits of your auto insurance. That’s why you should consider a Personal Umbrella Policy. It steps in to protect you over and above the limits of your auto policy. An umbrella policy can help protect your assets and prevent financial hardship.

Lawsuits Are Costly...And Not UncommonIt’s not just auto accidents you need to worry about. You need to protect yourself from other types of accidents as well. Imagine this: You’re having a Holiday party and someone slips, falls, and is injured. Think you won’t be sued? Think again. In today’s society, lawsuits are common...and costly. A lawsuit could destroy your financial security, but an umbrella policy could protect you.

The Protection You NeedSo how exactly can a Personal Umbrella Policy protect you? Basically, it offers protection over and above your auto and homeowners policies. Think of an umbrella policy as added protection. You get into a car accident, you’re sued, and your

auto policy only covers you up to a certain amount. Then what? Well, your umbrella policy kicks in and covers you for an additional amount...up to the limit you choose on your umbrella policy. It’s added protection, plain and simple.

Coverage limits on an umbrella policy start at $1 million and can go as high as $10 million for qualified applicants. And rates are lower than you may think. An umbrella policy covers a wide variety of liability situations and is protection you should seriously consider.

Don’t Forget! Review Your Policies Annually.Already have an Umbrella policy? Good for you! But, remember: Your financial situation changes over the years. The umbrella policy (as well as the auto and homeowners policies) that you bought ten, five, or even one year ago might not have enough liability coverage to protect you today.

So call us today. Our insurance specialists will discuss your coverage and limits with you. The cost of adding more liability coverage to your policies could be surprisingly small...and the benefit big.

Jennifer Von Behrens and partner Wade Weingart of Computer Guru were always industrious even as kids. Jennifer opened her first

business at the age of 10, running a lawn mowing and yard weeding business. Her parents always knew she would be some sort of entrepreneur. Wade was bucking bales at 13 because he figured it would help build character for whatever his future endeavors would be.

The computer business held a natural attraction for Wade, even as a kid going back to the early days of the Apple II. For Jennifer it was more a matter of liking computers but feeling like there were many shops in the area that were lacking in ethics. So the only way to do business ethically was to open a place of her own. As Jen says “There is nothing worse than dropping off your computer at a shop not knowing what is wrong with it, then coming back to get it only to find all of your information gone along with half of your paycheck.” Getting your computer diagnosed at Computer Guru is free and painless, and you will receive a quote that is easy to understand.

Computer Guru offers virus removals, tune-ups that clean up, de-bug, and remove viruses, malware and spyware, data backup and recovery, business and residential networking and we build custom computers, gaming units, and servers for both business and residential. If you are a medical professional, Computer Guru also does E.M.R. Conversion (help convert medical facilities over to Electronic Medical Records systems according to Federal Regulations. Computer Guru is H.I.P.A.A. certified.)

Yes they make house calls. These Gurus can go onsite for both business and residential customers. This helps customers to keep their schedules and get their computers fixed without having to leave their offices or homes. Computer Guru works on all brands of Computers/PC’s, Laptops, Linux and Macs.

Even Jennifer and Wade’s kids have the technology business bug. Both of Jen’s boys (Noah - 15 years old and Justin - 12 years old) show an avid interest in working on computers. Noah maintains his own custom computer at home, has built websites, online servers, and is a beta-tester for different companies that put out computer games. Justin is already a pro at taking apart laptops and finding glitches on games. Wade’s oldest son Scott (15 years old) actually works in the office regularly. He also takes all of the computer classes that he can in high school right now.

Wonder if they want to be a second generation group of Computer Gurus?

Gifts that Help Your HandsBROUGHT TO YOU BY COEUR D’ALENE HAND THERAPY & HEALING CENTER

Whether you have arthritis, have overused your hands or have another hand or upper body condition, daily tasks may be slower and more difficult. Stiffness, pain and numbness often

increase with the weather and seasonal tasks like snow shoveling or even wrapping packages. Rather than giving the same old gifts, there are many simple and inexpensive gifts that will be used and remembered throughout the year.

Heat helps to relieve stiffness and increases blood flow. There are a variety of warming mitts and heating pads available. Rice bags are reasonable in price and you can easily make these at home (instructions on our website cdahandtherapy.com). Paraffin units that you can use to coat the hand to hold in heat and needed moisture are available at department stores or on line.

Okay – here is one old standard – gloves. Yes you do need to wear them. There are many varieties available that have thinsulate or other insulation, some that have warming packs or even batteries. Be sure gloves fit well and that they are non slip. Especially for weak hands, too tight of a grip can cause additional pain and damage to joints.

In fact, larger grips are a way of “saving” your hands. Using a steering wheel cover can make your steering wheel larger and easier to grip for comfort and safety. Limiting forceful or extra tight grip and forceful pinch and twist movements, as with a standard can opener, is critical. Look for larger and ergonomic handles on kitchen utensils, snow shovels and other tools.

Many people do more cooking during the holidays. Using electric food choppers, mixers and can openers can help. However you want to find ones that are easy to operate – these are not all equal so these should be tried out. Jar openers are a good stocking stuffer and are available many places. One simple and inexpensive tool is a spring loaded scissors – the self sharpening ones are best. Kept in the kitchen these can be used to open packages (which is often a challenge). Holding the bowl still when mixing can be as simple as putting a damp towel under it, or using a nonslip piece of matting.

Also there is nothing better than a truly sharp, easy to use knife with a handle that feels good in your hand. It is far better to have one really great knife than a large variety. Many chefs use only a medium size knife, paring knife, cleaver and a bread knife. Swedish knives, often used by meat cutters, have a vertical handle so you don’t have to bend your wrist.

Just being aware of these tips can open your eyes to other possibilities. You can check online by googling adaptive equipment for hands, arthritis etc. Also check out the links on the cdahandtherapy.com website. If you are having continued pain in your hands or body, therapy can help by providing you with treatment specific to your needs and goals, so you can start out with a great 2013!

Tickets are $3 dollars and no ASB cards, district passes, boost-er passes or IHSAA passed will be honored at the doors.

Lake City will be looking to avenge losses on both the girls and boys side. Last January The Vikings defeated the Tim-berwolves 55-31 in front of a packed Elmer Jordan Court. The Lake City girls didn’t fare much better as Coeur d’Alene took care of business 51-31. But as many will tell you anything can happen in a rivalry game and this year promises to be another good matchup and rowdy atmosphere. Both teams have some new faces so it will be up to the veterans to lead their teams to victory. The varsity girls tip off at 5:45pm and the boys will follow with a 7:30pm tip. Tickets are expected to go fast so get there early and cheer on your favorite team!

Coeur d’Alene Captures Back to Back State Drama Titles

After a long two days in Pocatello with over 500 com-petitors and close to 40 teams, the CDA High School Theatre Department won the state title!

We took 26 entries down to state where 17 entries went to semi-finals, 12 went to finals, and 4 entries took home indi-vidual titles.

It was a close race; however, the professionalism and energy of our students made it all possible to take home our second title back-to-back.

Thanks for all your support and understanding of the arts at CHS - I am one proud coach!

Fight for Prairie Pig!

The fight for the Prairie Pig is heating up as Post Falls and Lakeland get ready to do battle not only on the courts but in the stands. The annual rivalry is more than just a basketball game; it’s also a spirit com-

petition. Students in the crowd have just as much riding on the matchup as the players on the court. Despite losing both games last season, Lakeland will look to hold on to both the orange and green pigs. They’ll have to do well at the lip-sync dance routine, cheer show, song competition and of course be the loudest and proudest fans. If you don’t have a pair of ear-plugs, you might want to pick some up. The school that scores the most points in each competition will take the pigs home and proudly display them in the trophy case for another year. An estimated 1,600 people showed up last year and nearly blew the roof off the gym. The Post Falls boys have won 11 straight on the hardwood, but Lakeland has claimed the pigs 10 out of the 16 times they’ve played. Tickets go on sale to the public on Tuesday, December 18th. Tickets are $5. Both boys and girls games will be held at Post Falls on Thursday, Decem-ber 20th. Tip off for the girls game is 5:15pm, boys tip is 7pm.

Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) wrote the poem Twas the night

before Christmas also called “A Visit from St. Nicholas” in 1822. It is now

the tradition in many American families to read the poem every Christmas

Eve. The first publication date was 23rd December 1823 and it was an

immediate success. It was not until 1844 that Clement Clarke Moore

claimed ownership when the work was included in a book of his poetry.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,

With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.

A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

ide Christmas DinnerGATHER AROUND THE TABLE FOR PERFECTLY COOKED PRIME RIB

If there is one constant across the world it’s that food brings family and loved ones together. The holidays are a special time for families celebrating all sorts of traditions. It’s a time when people travel great distances to share in

the spirit of giving and of great food. It’s a time to catch up with seldom seen relatives or a son or daughter back from their first semester of college. And it’s a time of shrimp cock-tail, deviled eggs, frosted cookies, and plenty of other overin-dulging choices.

A meal should never be stressful; in fact it should be the op-posite. It’s a time when the TV gets shut off, the texting stops, the worries or work disappear, and loved ones gather for a good old fashion conversation. Tim and Noelle Branen, own-ers of Tim’s Special Cut Meats want everyone to have a happy holiday and a wonderful meal. Tim recommends prime rib as the centerpiece to any great meal. It is easy to cook, incredibly flavorful, and can feed large groups with relative ease. Below are recipes that Tim and his family enjoy and hope you will too!

Holiday Prime RibTurn oven to 450 degrees. Place roast rib side down in pan and season with garlic powder and prime rib and roast seasoning. Sear for 15 minutes at 450 and then turn oven temp to 325. Continue cooking until internal temp is 120 for rare and 140 for medium. Check using a good internal meat thermometer. Once at your desired temp, take the roast out of the oven and let sit on counter for 15-20 minutes for juices to settle. The meat will continue to cook so don’t pull it out of the oven too late. Something to Do With the Leftovers………

Leftover Blackened Prime RibSlice the roast into thick 1/2” or inch slices. Heat a skillet on medium high. Mix in bowl, a cup or two of bread crumbs de-pending on how much you are cooking, 2 tablespoons crushed dill seed (you can us more if you like this gives it flavor) and dash of pepper. Dip slices in an egg wash and then into bread crumb mixture. Melt butter in skillet and pan fry your steaks a couple minutes on each side just until heated through.

Beer fans can rejoice as the long awaited Trickster’s Brewing Company is open and ready to quench your

thirst. Owner and Brewmaster Matt Morrow spent months perfecting his recipes and building his brand new brew house from the ground up. He is excited to bring another choice in craft beer to the Inland northwest. Trickster’s will have four standard ales and will brew special seasonal beers throughout the year. Now pouring in the tap-room are Cougar Bay Blonde, an English Summer Ale, Bear Trap Brown, an English Brown Ale, Coyote Morning IPA, an American India Pale Ale, and Inspector Stonewall Amber, an American Amber Ale.

The taproom is spacious and allows visitors to see the brewing process as it happens. You can sample each of the beers or sit down for a pint or two. Don’t forget your growler (64oz glass jug) so you can take some hand crafted ale home with you. If you don’t have one, don’t worry you can pick up an official Trickster’s Growler at the brewery. While Trickster’s doesn’t plan on bottling in the immediate future, look for their tap handles to start popping up at your favorite bars and restaurants soon.

THE LUCKY SAUCERA famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store and he does a double take. He knows that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars. The store owner replies, “I’m sorry, but the cat isn’t for sale. The collector says, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I’ll pay you twenty dollars for that cat.” And the owner says “Sold,” and hands over the cat. The collector continues, “Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat’s used to it and it’ll save me from having to get a dish.” To which the owner says, “Sorry buddy, but that’s my lucky saucer. So far this week I’ve sold sixty-eight cats.”

DALMATIONSunday School helper was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children began discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster. “No,” said another, “he’s just for good luck.” A third child brought the argument to a close. “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrant.”

THE LOST PURSEA lady lost her handbag in the bustle of Christmas shopping. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, “Hmmm.... That’s funny. When I lost my bag there was a $20 bill in it. Now there are twenty $1 bills.”

The boy quickly replied, “That’s right, lady. The last time I found a lady’s purse, she didn’t have any change for a reward.”

THE MUSICAL GIFTThanks for the electric guitar you gave me for Christmas,” little Chris Cody said to his uncle the first time he saw him after the holidays. “It’s the best present I ever got.” “That’s great,” said his uncle. “Do you know how to play it?”

“Oh, I don’t play it,” the little fellow said. “My mom gives me a dollar a day not to play it during the day and my dad gives me five dollars a week not to play it at night.”

A TRAIN FOR CHRISTMASWhile working as a mall Santa, I had many children ask for electric trains. “If you get a train,” I would tell each one, “you know your dad is going to want to play with it too. Is that okay?”

The usual answer was a quick yes, but after I asked one boy this question, he became very quiet. Trying to move the conversa-tion along, I asked what else he would like Santa to bring him. He promptly replied, “Another train.”

This month at Mobius Science Center we have been playing with a scientific toy that has it’s roots in the mid 17th century. Named after Rene Descartes, the Cartesian Diver was probably invented by a student

of the famous scientist Galileo Galilei! It is simple to make at home and is a great way to explore the principles behind buoyancy. You will need:

1 2L bottle with cap1 disposable drinking strawClear tapePaper clipsClay or small beads (for extra weight)Deep cup for testing buoyancy

Instructions: Clean out the bottle and remove the label. Cut the straw in half with scissors. Fold the cut straw in half and fasten it with a piece of tape (see pictures). Make sure the tape does not cover the open ends of the straw. This will be your diver.

We now need to make the diver “neutrally buoyant”. Buoy-ancy is a measure of how an object floats, based on how much water it displaces. Neutral buoyancy is when an object neither floats nor sinks. We will accomplish this by fastening paper clips to the diver and testing its buoyancy in the deep cup full of water. We want the diver to float just at or below the sur-face, with the open ends of the straw facing down. If you have trouble making it neutrally buoyant, you can us a little piece of clay or a few beads as extra ballast.

Once the diver is neutrally buoyant in the cup, fill the 2 liter bottle to the brim with water, drop the diver in, and seal it with the cap. To make the diver sink, squeeze the bottle. When you release the pressure caused by squeezing, the diver should rise back to the surface.

Explanation: The air trapped in the bent straw causes the diver’s buoyancy. When squeezed, the air in the bottle is compressed and the diver becomes negatively buoyant. Releasing the pressure al-lows the air to expand, making the diver buoyant again.

More to Do: Experiment with different bottle sizes. If you use a small water bottle, do you have to squeeze it harder to make the diver sink? What if you don’t fill the bottle all the way?

The Cartesian DiverBROUGHT TO YOU BY MOBIUS SCIENCE CENTER

Recently, Tyler and Arianna Flynn have helped to solve the mystery of stolen artifacts from a local tribe and got to take porcupine quills, which had been pulled from their dog’s muzzle, to school for show and tell.

“I can’t believe how fast the holidays are coming. It seems like we were just slicing that tasty turkey.” Arianna overheard her mom’s portion of a telephone conversation.

“Who are you talking to?” Arianna whispered to her mom.

“Grandma,” her mom mouthed.

“Saturday?” her mom asked. “I’m not sure. Let me ask.” Turning to Arianna and Tyler, who was working a puzzle in the corner, she said, “Grandma wants to know if you would like to come to her home on Saturday to bake cookies.”

“Awesome. Yes!” exclaimed Tyler.

“Yummy yum yum! Yes, yes, yes,” exclaimed Arianna.

“Um, as I think you heard, the kids would love to come over on Saturday,” their mom said into the phone. They settled on a time, and their mom promised to drive them.

“You realize that I’ll want to eat some of the cookies, too,” their mom told them after hanging up the phone.

“Bring the knife straight down,” Grandma Flynn instructed Tyler. Her hand covered his, which was gripping a table knife. “You’re doing great! I’m glad I got these rolls of pinwheel cookie dough ready before you got here so the two of you could help with the slicing and placing them on the pan.”

“Are these close enough together, Grandma?” Arianna asked as she placed the circles on the cookie sheet.

“Perfect!” Grandma Flynn responded.

As Arianna filled the cookie sheets, Grandma Flynn popped them into the oven.

Before long, the aroma of cookies baking filled the kitchen. Taking a pan out, she said, “As soon as these cool a bit, you can test them.”

“Sure,” Tyler replied.

“What’s next, Grandma?” Arianna asked.

“I thought it would be fun to have each of you design a gingerbread cookie for your mom. I have some paper and crayons at the table. I’ll mix up the dough while you draw your idea.”

“What fun!” Arianna said. “I love baking cookies at your home, Grandma.”

Grandma Flynn pulled the last cookie sheet out of the oven and turned it off.

“Why are you turning the oven off, Grandma?” Tyler asked.

“I’ll turn it back on when we’re ready to start cooking the next batches,” she replied. “We’ll conserve electricity that way.”

“I’m going to make a dog like Copper,” Tyler said, choosing a green crayon.

“I’m going to make an arrowhead,” Arianna said, choosing a red crayon.

They added dots and stripes and other fun designs on their pictures while Grandma Flynn’s mixer whirred under her skilled hands. “I’m all done mixing the dough,” she said. “How are the pictures coming?”

“I’m almost done,” Tyler said.

“Me, too,” Arianna said, intently coloring the edges of the arrowhead.

“I’ll be right back,” Grandma Flynn said. “When you’re done, just set them over there.” She waved her hand toward the counter as she left the kitchen.

“I’m all done,” said Arianna. She stood up and placed the picture on the stove. “I know Mom will love it.” She sat back down at the table to watch Tyler finish his picture.

“Didn’t Grandma take all of the cookies out of the oven?” Tyler asked Arianna. “I think I smell something burning.”

They turned around and saw Arianna’s paper shrinking into a brown ball.

“GRANDMA!” they yelled. “FIRE!” (To Be Continued)
