    NEWSLETTERVol.13 No.3Editor: Judy Linstruth

Well another year is coming to a close

and a lot of good things have been accomplishedhere at NEBCO FIRE-EMS. I am so pleased with the way

things are going regarding the way the two services have been combined. Our paramedics and EMTs have done a

great job in making this service what it is today, providingthe citizens of our area with some of the latest and best

procedures in the field of pre-hospital care. We are blessed

with this due to the great relationship we have with Rogers

Fire Department who provides our personnel with theirongoing continuing education. At this time, we are also

looking into doing joint training with AirEvac. This willbe a great way of expanding our way of giving you even

better service when AirEvac and NEBCO need to workdirectly with one another. Provided the funding is

available, we are also hoping to send two more students to paramedic school this spring.

Another big accomplishment was being able to purchase a newer ambulance, one equipped with four

wheel drive. With the winter coming I will feel a lot better knowing that we should be able to get to mostplaces without the concern of getting stuck. Last years snow was no fun for our guys to get to and from theirdestinations. This newer ambulance already has, and will continue to make a big difference in our ability to

    travel our diverse terrain.

We have sold the property across the street that was VASs headquarters. This sale is a win win for ourcommunity. The funds from this sale will help us with the much needed funding for a new ambulance and

replace some of our older EMS equipment that will need to be replaced in the next year or two. On the otherside of this, Gods Pantry is who acquired the buildings and this is going to help them serve more people in

need. So again, this is a big win for the community as a whole.

Thanks to a wonderful donor, Fire Station 2 in the Lost Bridge area now has water service to thestation. This will now let us move forward on finishing some of the other projects in Station 2. These

projects would be really hard to complete without some really big hearted people helping make this happen. Thanks so much!

We purchased a New tanker fire truck and it has been delivered and put in service at Station 2. Even

though this truck is stationed there, it will respond to all calls in our entire area and will help in getting a moresubstantial water supply on all our fires. A big positive! This is a huge step forward in replacing a part of our

older fleet, and by the way, this is the first new truck NEBCO has ever had the opportunity to buy.

We sent two of our firefighters to the Northwest Arkansas Community College to get their state fire

certifications for Firefighter I and Firefighter II. This was a year long course spending every Tuesday andThursday night, plus Saturday in training to become firefighters. These two did this entirely on their own

time. The next time you see Andy Driggs and Cris Vitali pat them on the back and tell them good job. Donttell them, but the instructors told me they finished in the top of their class! Great job! This is an example of

what our responders are truly about; a dedication to providing our community the best service possible.

When we brought the Fire and EMS service together, we advised you we would evaluate how it wasgoing and get back to you. Since then I have comented in these letters how I think were doing, but I feel we

need to get together personally to hear you opinions and discuss where our service is and where we need togo. So, after the first of the year we plan to set up some community meetings. Your input is needed to con-

tinue to help make this the service you want.

I would like to take this time to thank all of you that allow me to serve as the Fire Chief of this depart-ment. It means a lot to me knowing you have the faith and trust in me to serve this community. Without your

support and trust there is no way we would be where we are today. Thanks again.

If you have a fireplace or wood burning stoveyou need to have your flue cleaned and inspected

before seasonal burning. Flue fires are a big cause ofhouse fires and with the cold weather upon us dont

waste any time calling your friendly chimney sweep. You might also check your heater filter and

clean out your dryer vent pipe. Filters becomeclogged and cause your heater to become less

efficient and cost you more money to run. Dryervents filled with lint are another leading cause of

    house fires.

So be safe this winter. Do you safety checksand get your flue shot.

    Holiday Fire Safety

Following are a few simple fire safety tips that can keep electric lights, candles, and the ever popular Christmas treefrom creating a tragedy. Learn how to prevent a fire and what to do in case a fire starts in your home. Make sure all ex-

its are accessible and not blocked by decorations or trees. Help ensure that you have a fire safe holiday season.

Selecting a Tree for the Holidays

Needles on fresh trees should be green and hard to pull back from the branches, and needles should not break if the tree

has been freshly cut. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. Old trees can be identified by bouncing the tree trunk on

the ground. If many needles fall off, the tree has been cut too long and, has probably dried out, and is a fire hazard.

    Caring for Your Tree

Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing itto be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks. Be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. Do not putyour live tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times.

    Disposing of Your Tree

Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood- burning stove. When the tree becomes dry, discard it

promptly. The best way to dispose of your tree is by taking it to a recycling center or having it hauled away by a

    community pick-up service.

    Using an Artificial Tree

Many of the same tips apply to your artificial tree. Keep away from heat and fire sources.

    Maintain Your Holiday Lights

Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and

excessive kinking or wear before putting them up. Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory.

    Do Not Overload Electrical Outlets

Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe. Connect strings of lights to anextension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Make sure to periodically check the wiresthey should not be

    warm to the touch.

Do not leave holiday lights on unattended!

Never put wrapping paper in the Fireplace

Wrapping paper in the fireplace can result in a very large fire, throwing off dangerous sparks and embers that may resultin a chimney fire.

    CANDLE CARE

Avoid Using Lit Candles. If you do use lit candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they

cannot be easily knocked down. Never leave the house with candles burning.

NEVER PUT CANDLES ON A TREE

    COOKING SAFETY

There is a lot of cooking being done during the Holiday Season, here are some safety tips.

The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or

broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking,

and use a timer to remind you that youre cooking.

Stay alert! To prevent cooking fires, you have to be alert. You wont be if you are sleepy, have been drinking alcohol,

or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy.
