Stress Free Holidays

stREE-FREEholidaysby Alyssa Walker

As the holidays approach, many people seem to find themselves in stressful situations and the happiest time of the year somehow transforms into a whirlwind of panic. Presents must be purchased, relatives begin to pick dates for holiday festivities and the children’s Santa list has become two scribbly pages instead of one. If you choose to give yourself one gift this year, perhaps stray away from the material items and give yourself this- an enjoyable holiday season.

Choosing the right presents can always be a challenge, especially if you tend to overthink gifts. Children under 11 will most likely be pleased with anything they find under the tree. If you don’t want to spend a large amount of money for one of your nieces or nephews, purchase three inexpensive items for them instead! Remember when we were that age and unwrapping the gift seemed like the best part? They will be thrilled to find the extra presents beneath the tree. For children over 12, don’t worry if you can’t seem to find the perfect gift- a gift card will save you the stress and may very well be better than anything else you could’ve given them!

Luckily when it comes down to your children, you don’t have to guess what they want this year because they’ve written it out on their wish list and have been hinting about the new Xbox games since early October. As parents, we want to give our children everything they could ever want, but realistically, all the items on their list combined adds up to a small, one bedroom apartment! Have your children write their list early and pay attention to what gifts they seem the most excited about. Kids tend to write down everything that comes to their mind once they have those colorful markers in their hands!

Ding dong! Your relatives have arrived and you haven’t finished putting the last of the ornaments on your tree! Don’t break out into a hot sweat; instead remind yourself that your family loves you regardless of how many holiday figurines you have around your house and greet them with open arms. Before the arrival, ask all your family members to bring a certain dish to create a fantastic feast on the special day. Now instead of worrying about cooking and baking for two days straight, you can focus on the main course and have the rest of the time to relax. If you’re not hosting the holiday bash, ask whoever is if they would like you to bring anything specific or if you could help them with anything at all. Tis the season to spread joy!

This holiday season when the family gathers around in the living room to exchange gifts and kinds words, lose yourself in the conversations and happiness floating throughout the room. The magic of the holidays resides in your loved ones and you’ll miss it if your mind stays fixated on stressful issues. Who knows, if the holidays go by smoothly your New Year’s resolution may be to have a stress free life! We can only hope.

As parents, we want to keep our child consistently happy and sometimes this involves feeding them unhealthy snacks. Thanks to tempting commercials, our children have been exposed to every delicious, unhealthy food product on the market. Children will naturally be drawn to the foods that are cleverly advertised and have pretty packaging, but these foods do not promote a healthy lifestyle.

When your child looks for a snack, healthy choices should always be readily available. If your pantry is composed of granola bars, popcorn and trail mix, your child only has the option to snack on healthy food. When you have the decision to eat a doughnut or oatmeal for breakfast, desire usually overcomes us. However, if the doughnut was not an option to begin with, the oatmeal wins. Eliminating junk food from the menu is the easiest way to develop healthy eating habits. We don’t have to deprive our children of these treats altogether, but junk food should definitely only be eaten in moderation.

The eating habits children develop when they are young will determine their relationship with food for their whole lives. If your child is exposed to healthy eating habits at a young age, they will make healthier choices as adults.

New Year’s Resolutions Worth Keeping As the noisemakers begin to rattle and the fireworks light up the beautiful night sky, there’s one thought that flies through everyone’s mind- I need to go to the gym more. While purchasing a gym membership promises a step towards good health, there are other resolutions that will not only benefit yourself, but also your family.

If you want to start working out more, intertwine family and fitness. Take a walk through the park, put up a basketball hoop or start a new fitness craze in the backyard. Teaching your kids the importance of fitness will help them make healthier choices in life. Working out can be fun with your children beside you!

Remember last year when your mornings would be so hectic your family rushed out the door without any breakfast? This year, breakfast should be made a priority. Perhaps a classic, home cooked meal with pancakes and sausage is a bit too farfetched for a Monday morning, but who knows what can happen when you calm your nerves and set the alarm 20 minutes earlier. If your family has never sat down in the morning and had breakfast before, it might be a challenge to get everyone seated around the table, but if you can succeed in this new morning ritual, there’s a large possibility that everyone’s day will go about smoother. For the mornings when the whole family seems to be behind schedule, have a makeshift breakfast by the door. Fill a couple of baskets with granola bars and fresh fruit for your kids to munch on.

Going out with the family adds up, especially if you have a whole day of activities planned out. If you’re looking to save money this year, turn to page 6 and read about all the free places you can go to with your family. After all, everything’s better when you’re saving money!

The purpose of these resolutions are not to put pressure on you, but to make your life happier overall. If you find yourself stressing over certain situations, taking up yoga or merely clearing your mind for five minutes a day can help you remember what’s important in life. Happy 2012!

Acting UpActing Up Creative Drama Academy

provides after school care and teaches children about social interaction. What is creative drama? Creative Drama is “dramatic improvisation designed by a leader for the benefit of the participants”. To help build confidence, children will partake in theatre games, improvisation, storytelling, pantomime, diction and vocal projection.

Acting Up’s after school program picks students up from area elementary schools and transports them to the facility. Once they arrive, kids will have snack time and then the creative drama classes will begin. After each class there will be time to begin on homework.

As well as the after school program, Acting Up has additional classes during the week, birthday parties, summer camps and holiday workshops. Birthday parties last for two and a half hours and every birthday boy or girl can choose their own theme!

State Parks Day Trip

The weeks seem to become more and more hectic, but your weekend should be filled with relaxation and family time. Visit one, or all, of the state parks in Texas and watch as your children play and your stress melts away.

Lost MaplesVisit Lost Maples this fall and witness the gorgeous transformation from summer to fall. The red, gold and orange foliage draw people to the beautiful state park as well as the vast array of rare bird species. The Sabinal River flows through the park and provides campers with a place to cool off after a long hike or bike ride. Lost Maples is easily one of the most beautiful parks in Texas, especially during these winter months.

Bastrop State ParkSpend the day paddling a canoe, swimming in a sparkling pool or golfing at one of the best courses in Central Texas at Bastrop State Park. Bikers enjoy the 12 mile scenic route along Park Road between Bastrop and Buescher State Parks and if it’s too cold outside, jump in your car to experience the beautiful scenery in the comfort of your car. Lake Bastrop provides campers with a place to water ski, boat and fish for a day of water fun!

Dinosaur Valley State ParkDinosaur Valley State Park is quite a drive from San Antonio, but the drive will prove to be worth it once you step foot in the remarkable park. Located near Glen Rose, Dinosaur Valley has some of the best well preserved dinosaur tracks in the entire world! Along with the breathtaking prints is a 70 foot Apatosaurus and a 45 foot Tyrannosaurs Rex. Your family will feel as if they’ve been transported to the prehistoric ages! Camp grounds and cabins are available, with hotels nearby.
