ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH 2 2 December 2010 Issue No. 04 DISTRICT 2450 Test time! We are at the halfway point in this Rotary year, and now is the time to test the strengths and weaknesses of our clubs. Perhaps a strange idea for some Rotarians, but how else will we learn how the activities and programs of our respective clubs match up to those of other clubs in our districts – and around the world? Therefore, I encourage all Rotarians – not only the club officers – to become involved in evalu- ating their clubs during the month of January. The Presidential Citation program for 2010-11 has been designed as a score sheet for all the Avenues of Service. It also is a checklist for many of the activities and programs conduct- ed by most clubs. Club presidents are required to complete the score sheets and submit them to their district governors by 31 March 2011 for their clubs to be eligible for the Presidential Citation awards. The scores should be shared with all club members either as written reports or as presentations at club meetings. Starting work on the Presidential Citation test in January will provide an opportunity to correct any discovered deficiencies in club activities before the submission deadline of 31 March. It also will cause the club leaders to notice that a new Presidential Citation with Distinction award is available this year for clubs with a good bal- ance of activities in all Avenues of Service. This year I am recommending that all clubs review their practices and procedures to see if they are truly best practices or merely tra- ditional practices. Annual evaluations of our clubs are certainly best practices, and more Rotarians than usual need to be involved in the evaluations for their clubs. The Presiden- tial Citation score sheets are a good place to start the process. How else will we know if our clubs really are becoming Bigger, Better, and Bolder? DISTRICT 2450

Test time!

We are at the halfway point in this Rotary year, and now is the time to test the strengths and weaknesses of our clubs. Perhaps a strange idea for some Rotarians, but how else will we learn how the activities and programs of our respective clubs match up to those of other clubs in our districts – and around the world? Therefore, I encourage all Rotarians – not only the club officers – to become involved in evalu-ating their clubs during the month of January.

The Presidential Citation program for 2010-11 has been designed as a score sheet for all the Avenues of Service. It also is a checklist for many of the activities and programs conduct-ed by most clubs.

It also will cause the club leaders to notice that a new Presidential Citation with Distinction award is available this year for clubs with a good bal-ance of activities in all Avenues of Service.

This year I am recommending that all clubs review their practices and procedures to see if they are truly best practices or merely tra-ditional practices. Annual evaluations of our clubs are certainly best practices, and more Rotarians than usual need to be involved in the evaluations for their clubs. DECEMBERIS FAMILY MONTH

This month, Rotarians, Interactors, Rotaractors, and RYLA participants are celebrating Rotary’s commitment to family. During Family Month, build the connection between your family and the family of Rotary. Consider bringing along members of your family when you participate in activities involving Rotary’s youth and young adult programs, or organize a service project aimed at strengthening families in your community. Other possibilities include:

ow I am back in Dubai to join again the Rotarian family after being blessed by the Almighty offering me a fresh start in life.Rotary is not only a club but it is a theme by itself worth believing and living it.

When I was asked by the Board to write about the living experience as a model Rotarian, I was confused because the word “model” is too broad, but I can say that I am devoted to the cause of Rotary. The Rotary is definitely an added value to the Dubai liberal culture which has distinguished this Emirate even before the UAE independence in 1971. Prior to this date I was not acquainted with this Emirate, but when I arrived on MEA flight from Beirut, I had a feeling that Dubai is moving steadily and rapidly towards the future. My initial assignment in 1971 was a Legal Consultant, for a Contracting Company (OTAC). I remained in Dubai for around one year then back to Beirut to complete my training requirements as a Litigator. I returned at the break of the Civil war in Lebanon in 1975. During the initial period in Dubai, I also visited Muscat to assist OTAC Management at that end. During one of my visits to Muscat, I was granted an Omani Driving License, the only document I was asked to produce was a copy of my Passport. The authorities in Oman at that time had imported a new driving License photo machine and during the period of test & training I was lucky to obtain one of early Omani Driving Licenses. In January 1976, I obtained the Professional License from the Amiri Diwan in Dubai. Since that time I am practicing the Legal Profession in this distinguished Emirate. The drive for communal service was always in my heart and mind. This is why I was one of the founders of the Lebanese Business Council and thereafter served as President. However, the Rotary challenge had its unique features and culture. I was introduced to the Club by Rotarian Mahindra Patel in 2004 and since then I was given the opportunity to participate in the Club social and humanitarian activities. In 2005, I was elected to the Board as Vice President. The Rotarian experience during my 4 years period assignment gave me the opportunity to learn and practice the team work. The Dubai Club although was still young in comparison to other Clubs in the region, but our Club was able to be actively advance in communal service by raising necessary funds for various humanitarian causes. We were able to help and support communities which were subject to aggressive elements of nature or to aggression. The achievements we have made in this regard were not the result of one person’s efforts but of a team work. However, I believe that further systematic Rotarians support and cooperation in this regard is highly needed. One thing I regret is that our achievements were not well exposed to the region and also to Rotary International. I sincerely hope that the present and future Board will pay more attention to the question of exposure, so that our efforts will continue to be well recognized. Although, the Club is always in need for a fresh and active blood to empower our efforts however, I believe that the selection criteria for the new members should be well defined to meet the Club inspirations and progress. It is time that all the Rotarians join hands to make our Club a landmark in various aspects whether in the social or humanitarian service. I am confident that the Club enjoys the necessary requirements to be the main and distinguished Club in our region we have the advantage of the Dubai spirit and the multicultural element to meet this challenge. Let us all be optimistic and spare enough time out of our busy schedule to give our Club a special identity in service above self.

I have been a rotaractor since about 8 years till now. Years passed by very quickly but the more the years pass, the more I figure out that taking the decision to join ROTARACT was one of the best decisions in my life. Rotary and Rotaract are really one big happy family. Rotaract is actually the elder baby of the Rotary.

Rotaract was established as a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. The idea then got fast and widely spread that it became one of Rotary’s most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 7,000 clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon. Rotaract clubs are sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true “partners in service” and key members of the family of Rotary. Rotaract made me able to feel the responsibility I have in my life. It also made me able to re-discover myself and use all my potentials to produce something beneficial. It gave me the ability to express myself openly & to communicate my ideas clearly. I have learnt many leadership and team work concepts. The rotational concept of Rotaract made it possible for me to be a leader once & a normal team member once which showed me the value of participation. Rotaract club of Dubai has been a success story since it began.

The club contained men & women from all over the world. Most of them were here to work but they showed great dedication to the club activities. They sacrificed big time of their lives to help and share. One of our members told me that she really feels that the Rotary and Rotaract are like her real family as they were the first friends that she met when she landed here.

I am proud to be leading Rotaract club of Dubai this year and to be a member in this Big Happy Family.

Stress Management...A young lady in front of the room, confidently walked around while leading and explaining stress management to an audience; with a raised glass of water, and everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, ‘half empty or half full?’ .... she fooled them all...

‘How heavy is this glass of water?’ she inquired with a smile.

Answers called out ranged from 8oz. to 20oz.

The lecturer replied, ‘The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you hold it. ‘If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. «If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. ‘In each case it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes. ‘She continued, ‘and that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.’

‘As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced. ‘So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work/life down. Don’t carry it home... pick it up tomorrow.’ ‘Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. Relax; pick them up later after you’ve rested. Life is short. Enjoy it and the now ‘supposed’ stress that you’ve conquered!

And then she shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life:• Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the

statue!• Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat

them.• Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle

of it.• Drive carefully... It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their

Maker.• If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.• If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was

probably worth it.• It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning

to others.• Never buy a car you can’t push.• Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then

you won’t have a leg to stand on.• Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.• Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.• The second mouse gets the cheese.• When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.• Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.• You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the

world to one person.• Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.• We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty

and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

• A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.• Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about

you today.

I wish you all the best for new year 2011 and good luck ..All the best...
