This Christmas for Phoebe Prince’s family will be different than any other Christmas they’ve had. Because on January, 15-year-old Phoebe Prince came home from school

& hanged herself. The recent immigrant from Ireland had evidently been subjected to

relentless harassment from schoolmates for at least 4 months before her suicide. Nine teens are

facing criminal charges for their hateful actions, it’s too late for Phoebe. Experts say bullying can be triggered by a desire to seem cool or to assert social dominance. It can also be a mask for low self-esteem and a need for approval. Bullying may start at home; in any case, if your child is mean to others at school, they are likely to take it out on siblings, as well. Ronald Mah, an expert on bullying, agrees that family dynamics help breed bullies & their victims. He says American culture is partly to blame — not only the generally hostile tone of much music & movies, but also a focus on excellence & achievement that ignores the greater good. There are three core things parents should help their children develop: 1) a positive sense of self, including sense of excellence about who & what they want to be, 2) a strong work ethic, 3) a sense of responsibility to others & the community. If you have the fi rst two, you can still be a jerk,” he says. I totally agree with Mr. Mah about the negative infl uence with the hostile “entertainment” that our kids are “into” these days. So how about this Christmas, you do not purchase any violent video games, (I mean zero, zip, -- no blood, no killing, no violence of any kind) or any negative music. Let’s start our kids out right next year; with love & thankfulness. Blessings & Merry Christmas, Terri

Hello Kids Korner Family,Can you believe it’s Christmas!!! Yikes where did the year go? I lost the months of September & October, if you fi nd them I would like them back. I have a lot of work still to do before the year is up! Oh Yeah Now I remember, September, it was the fi rst full month of the kids back in school. As for October, what a month for Kids Korner Family Magazine. We were at the fi rst ever Women’s Expo here at the Midland Horseshoe Area. We also had the opportunity to speak at the expo on Bullying and Self-Esteem. We’ll be back next year at the Expo, hope to see you there! We also were at the Kids Feast at Ashley’s Furniture. But our proudest day was at the second “Out Of the Darkness” suicide prevention walk, organized by Maura Callendar. I do believe we had the largest team there with almost 50 walkers. (See more on page 14). Thank You, Thank You, for supporting our family magazine. I want you to know that by your support you are investing in our community by allowing us the fi nancial means to spread the word about Promoting “Don’t Be A Bully, Be A Buddy”. Please send us your story, suggestion, or ideas!

Brought to you By Juanita Castilleja Remind children to practice healthy habits , because

germs spread, especially at school. How to Stop the Spread of Germs In a nutshell: take care to• Cover your mouth and nose • Clean your hands often• Don’t touch your eyes or you mouth• Don’t share snacks or lunches at school

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezingCough or sneeze into a tissue and then throw it away. Cover your cough or sneeze if you do not have a tissue. Then, clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.

The “Happy Birthday” song helps keep your hands clean? Not exactly. Yet we recommend that when you wash your hands -- with soap and warm water -- that you wash for 15 to 20 seconds. That’s about the same time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice!

Alcohol-Based Hand Wipes and Gel Sanitizers Work TooWhen soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitiz-ers may be used. You can fi nd them in most supermarkets and drugstores. If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn’t need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.*

CHRISTMASSALVATION

What Is Self-Esteem?To understand self-esteem, it helps to break the term into two words. Let’s take a look at the word esteem (say: ess-teem) fi rst. Esteem is a fancy word for think-ing that someone or something is important or valuing that person or thing. For example, if you really admire your friend’s dad because he volunteers at the fi re de-partment, it means you hold him in high esteem. And the special trophy for the most valuable player on a team is often called an esteemed trophy. This means the trophy stands for an important accomplishment. And self means, well, yourself! So put the two words together and it’s easier to see what self-esteem is. It’s how much you value yourself and how important you think you are. It’s how you see yourself and how you feel about your achievements.Self-esteem isn’t bragging about how great you are. It’s more like quietly knowing that you’re worth a lot (priceless, in fact!). It’s not about thinking

Why Self-Esteem Is ImportantSelf-esteem isn’t like a cool pair of sneakers that you’d love to have but don’t have to have. A kid needs to have self-esteem. Good self-esteem is important because it helps you to hold your head high and feel proud of yourself and what you can do. It gives you the cour-age to try new things and the power to be-lieve in yourself. It lets you respect yourself, even when you make mistakes. And when you respect yourself, adults and other kids usually respect you, too.Having good self-esteem is also the ticket to making good choices about your mind and body. If you think you’re important, you’ll be less likely to follow the crowd if your friends are doing something dumb or dangerous. If you have good self-esteem, you know that you’re smart enough to make your own decisions. You value your safety, your feel-ings, your health — your whole self! Good self-esteem helps you know that every part of you is worth caring for and protecting. Can you name 2 people that may have low self esteem? _________________________________________________________What is something you could do to help them? ______________________________________________________________
