Hello Plumbing Pros. I hope all is well with all of you. By the tme you read this, Thanksgiving will have come and gone, so I hope you all had a great holiday. With Christmas around the corner, I would like to wish you all a Season’s Greet-ings and a Happy New Year. Even with the down turn the recession has brought us, I count my blessings every-day and see a bright future ahead.
I would like to congratu-late George Raburn on his savvy campaign and being elected Vice President of the PHCC. I have known George for many years. He is a man with integrity, hard working and he’ll represent the PHCC well. Go George!
The ASPE put on a great trade show this year in At-lanta. My hat is off to all the board members who dedi-cate so much of their time to pull everything together.

Gray-Hodges was found-ed in 1949 in Tennessee, by Phillip Gray and Arthur Hodges, as a wholesale supplier of plumbing and kitchen equipment. In those days, there were no fiber-glass tubs, no plastic pipes and no decorative faucets. The company began with only 1 location in Knoxville, TN which had a 7,000 sq. ft. warehouse and the com-pany started with only 8 employees.
In the 1960's things began to change. Gray-Hodges ordered the very first trailer load of fiberglass tubs offered on the market. In 1984, the founders left the company and the ESOP (Employee owned company) was formed.
From that moment for-ward, Gray-Hodges became

impact of Reduced Flush Volumes
By World Plumbing InfoDoes reduced flush vol-
ume have a negative effect on the performance in the drain line? World Plumbing Info reports on one manu-facturer’s quest to find an answer.
The trend of reducing the volume of water used to flush sanitary fixtures is pos-ing questions about drain-line performance. While fixture manufacturers focus on the performance of their products in the laboratory, what about the impact on the overall performance of
the plumbing system?Reduced-flow, single-
flush toilets began to appear in Europe in the 1970s. Even then, water authorities around the globe raised concern about lowering the volume of the flush water used, when it was not known what effect such a reduction in quantity would have upon the flow within the associ-ated drain lines.
In 1993, Australian sani-taryware manufacturer Car-oma launched the first 6/3 dual-flush toilet, using just
six litres for full flush and three litres for half-flush. This was the first instance when the technologies of both reduced-flush and variable-flush volumes were integrated.
Dr Stephen Cummings, manager of Caroma’s R&D department, has long held the view that, while the in-volved and exacting process of designing and manu-facturing toilet suites is of paramount importance, a critical issue that needs to be considered is that the suite must be seen as part of a ‘balanced plumbing installation’.

ca Water utility celebrates ‘no drugs
down the drain’ Week From California American Water
West coast water district California American Water has designated the week of Nov. 9, 2009, as “No Drugs Down the Drain Week” for its Los Angeles service area as part of a national campaign sponsored by public and private agencies to reduce pharmaceutical pollution in source water supplies.
Items like aspirin, pre-scription drugs and other medications should never be thrown down the drain or toi-let, the utility says. They can often seep into the ground and find their way back into the water supply.
According to California American Water’s Los An-geles district manager Garry
Hofer, water utilities treat drinking water to ensure it meets or exceeds USEPA standards. “But the best water treatment is to pre-vent water pollution at the source,” says Hofer. “Envi-ronmental stewardship can begin right at home through how we use and dispose of old medicines as well as other hazardous items such as used motor oil and paint.”

is based upon the need to retain as much of the energy of the flushing water for as long as possible within the pipeline system. This flow-transportation performance can be impeded easily if the drain lines taking the waste discharge from the toilet bowl are poorly or incor-rectly installed.
“The construction of pipework with correct work-manship, gradient, true bore, smooth jointing and qual-ity materials are all essen-tial factors that will affect the overall performance significantly,” argues Dr Cummings. He initiated the design and construction of a pipeline test rig at the corporation’s Sydney manu-facturing centre.
The elevated test plat-form, situated approximately four metres above ground level, allows toilet suites of various designs to be con-nected easily to 100 mm and 80 mm diameter drain lines. These clear plastic drain lines, extending for 60 metres and forming the longest test installation of its kind in the world, enable the test team to easily observe the waste-flow performance from up to five water clos-ets set up on the rig, using varying drain-line grade configurations and low-flush discharges.
A number of intensive test programmes have been carried out over several years, incorporating national and international standards and procedures where ap-

9, 2009, only to be told by doctors that he had only 2 choices: miracle healing or numerous surgeries to try to rebuild his feet and ankles. As of today Sgt. Moore has had 9 surgeries and one skin graph. He was told by doctors that he would not be able to walk for 1 year and now six months later he is returning home with only a walker and wheelchair. Sgt. Moore is only 27 years old and has a beautiful wife and two wonderful little girls.
Double R Construction is currently building a home for Sgt. Moore and his fam-ily at no cost for the labor and was looking for a com-pany to donate plumbing products for this amazing family. The first company that came to mind was Fer-guson Enterprises. At that point the owners of Double R Construction, customers of Ferguson, called Fergu-son and ask if they would be so generous to donate plumbing products. At that point Mr. Jeff Hargis, Gen-eral Manager of Ferguson, did not even second think about this and said yes, they would not only donate all the plumbing for the home, they would also donate all the lighting fixtures. Ferguson Enterprises is so thankful to be able to be a part of
this amazing project for this most deserving family. Fer-guson stated “This was the least we could do for this family. The entire Moore fam-ily has given so much to us by serving our country that when this opportunity came to “give back” we could not have imagined saying no.”
Ferguson Makes an early Holiday gift in Support of industry
educationOn December 4, 2009
Ferguson announced that a $10,000 contribution has been made to support the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors (PHCC) Edu-cational Foundation’s 2009 Invest In Your Future Annual Giving Campaign. This is the fifth consecutive year that Ferguson has made a major gift to the Foundation’s an-nual fundraising campaign.
“We are extremely grate-ful to our friends at Ferguson for maintaining their strong commitment to supporting contractor education,” said Foundation Chairperson Bill Jones. “We know that the
contractors who have pre-pared themselves through training and education are the ones who will survive this ride through uncertain times, and Ferguson is help-ing to make that training possible.”
Ferguson has been a ma-jor supporter of the PHCC Educational Foundation for nearly twenty years and is a Corporate Founder level do-nor to the Foundation’s En-dowment Fund. Combined past and present contribu-tions from Ferguson now total more than $175,000 in support of industry educa-tion.

By using various low-flush volumes, combined with the introduction of syn-thetic solids and toilet paper, the researchers gained valu-able information and a better understanding of the perfor-mance criteria required to achieve a ‘balanced plumb-ing installation’.

- PHCC – National As-sociation will increase the involvement of members as indicated by a 15% increase in attendance at the conven-tion; increse in participation in list serves / Webinars; and more diverse participation in committees and task forces. Increase Membership in 2010.

OH MY GOSH!... is ev-eryone as excited about the upcoming time of the year as I am? I am pretty sure it is the time of the year that has me so excited…or maybe all of the coffee I have had today.
Fall is on top of us and it was very evident as we just held our TAPHCC Fall Board meeting in Gatlinburg. The colors of Mother Nature
at this time of the year are something to behold.
Thanksgiving was just a few weeksthis past month and is a holiday that com-bines most of my favor-ite things: Food, Family, Friends, Football and most importantly giving thanks to God for the wonderful blessings He has bestowed on each of us. It’s a tome to reflect and to help, in some
form or fashion, those who are less fortunate.
Now Christmas is nearly upon us. Okay, I have to admit I still feel (and maybe act) like a kid on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I do agree it is better to give than receive, but it is a lot of fun to get that ‘Special’ gift for Christmas. Don’t forget the less fortunate who struggle especially during this time of the year. There are many ways to assist those in need, so please be generous and
help out in some way. To end the year we have
New Year’s Eve and to cel-ebrate the beginning of next year, we have New Year’s Day. Enough said at this time about those holidays. I will address them in our next newsletter.
A couple of brief notes on our association: First, I want to give official con-gratulations to David Dug-ger on his appointment as our new Zone II Director for NAPHCC. I hope that every-one is aware of the direct reflection on our associa-tion and state that David’s appointment brings with it. David will be conscientious in his representation of us through his seat on the na-tional board.
Secondly, I want to con-gratulate George Raburn as he was installed as the new Vice President for NAPHCC. George is the past Zone II Director for our area. It was a tight race and George barely pulled out a close victory at the end. (Actually, George ran unopposed, but he was stressed until the final vote).
The National Conven-tion was great and if you didn’t go you may want to schedule now for next year’s convention in Las Vegas. There is a lot of information available for all members at the national conventions.
To end, I want to again focus on our upcoming holiday seasons. Take time to enjoy your life, family, friends and blessings. Re-member that no matter how bad things may seem, we as Americans are not the less fortunate, we are not the forgotten, we are not the starving, but we are the free and we are ‘One Nation under God.’ Be Gracious, Be Proud, Be Forgiving, Be Smart, Be Courteous, Be Kind, Be Giving, Be Humble, Be Loving, Be Considerate, Be Honest, Be True, Be Blessed, Be Thankful!
As spoken by Nick Ra-hall, “Today we thank God for all the blessings He has bestowed upon this great country and ask Him to continue to heal our land and meet our needs - and we do so through the power of prayer.”
So have a wonderful holi-days season until we meet again next month with the start of a new year.
Sincerely,Rick ThompsonTAPHCC State President

Just shy of an expected 30 local master plumbers have turned in paperwork required to participate in a repair and replacement program run by the Ham-ilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Au-thority.
“We haven’t gone through those yet to see if they’re compliant or not compliant,” said WWTA at-torney Mike Carter. “We’re going to start that process Monday.”
Mr. Carter said 28 plumbers turned in packets by Monday’s deadline
Those plumbers, if their paperwork is compliant, will take part in a six-month pi-lot program that involves in-specting and, if necessary, repairing 1,000 private ser-vice laterals -- sewer pipes that run from the home to main line under the road. About 24,000 gravity sewer customers pay a monthly $8 fee to fund the program.
That program is a re-sponse to a Tennessee De-partment of Environment and Conservation order which requires the author-ity to prevent rainwater from coming into the county’s sewer system.
Some plumbers have ar-gued that the requirements for the program, which in-clude performance bonds, background checks for em-ployees and set prices for work, aren’t fair to them. One plumber, John Bartlett of Neighborhood Plumbing, has threatened a lawsuit, though nothing had been filed as of Tuesday.
Mr. Bartlett could not be reached for comment.
Two other master plumb-ers, Norman Judd of Best Plumbing and Heating Co., and Mike Keefe of Keefe Plumbing and Heating Co. said many local plumbers, especially the smaller com-panies, need the work.
“This program will help the local economy and put a lot of their employees to work,” they wrote in a state-ment. “Not to mention the local pipe suppliers, insur-ance companies, the stone quarry, trucking companies and equipment rental com-panies.”
Mr. Carter has said that a court injunction would es-sentially end the program.

Arcade GA police chief Randy Williams and motor-ists who stopped at a wreck Thursday morning in Arcade saved the life of a woman trapped in a burning car.
Lula Little was pulling onto the bypass when her car was struck by a dump truck. The car quickly caught fire and those who stopped only had minutes to get her out.
Williams said that Kevin Bailey of Lula broke one of the front windows out of the car and then the two men pulled the woman out of the window. “There was so many people who stopped to help,” Williams said. “It was encouraging to see so many good Samaritans. There were so many people who stopped and got out of their cars with fire extinguishers. I think that is what saved her. If they had not, I think it might have been a different story.”
Williams said they had to get her out really fast be-cause the flames were get-ting bigger. “You didn’t have time to be scared,” he said. “When I first pulled up and saw the smoke and knew there was an entrapment, I just said, ‘God be with us.’ I just did my job. I give the praise, number one, to God. I believe there were angels in that car.”
A nurse was also at the scene and helped with Little after she was removed from the car. “It’s almost like God put people in certain places,” he said. “There was an emergency room nurse out there. When we got her out of the car, she took care of her.” Williams visited Mrs. Little Thursday night at an Athens hospital and said she had not suffered life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders had feared that a baby was also trapped in the car, but that turned out not to be the case. When the possibility of a baby being in the car was first said, Williams said another brave person who

“Jan Friel of Athens ran back to the car and dove in the back window,” Wil-liams said. “I grabbed her by the waist. She said the baby seat is empty. Kevin Bailey had busted the back window. I didn’t see a baby. There for a few minutes, when we thought there was a baby, ….oh you don’t know how it felt.”
Williams said he also visited Friel Thursday after-noon at Peace Place, where she works, and told her how brave she had been. “I told her that I had been in two combat tours in Iraq and I witnessed her do something that was so wonderful,” he said.

The Hefner Family has been in the Plumbing in-dustry for 90 years and still counting.
The Hefner Plumbing tradition all began with Mr. B.H. Hefner (Bennett Hill Hefner). He was born in 1898 in Stony Point, NC and when he was a teen he moved to Oklahoma to live with relatives. It was in Okla-homa where he learned the plumbing trade. He moved back to North Carolina and began plumbing in Char-lotte, NC at the age of 20 in 1919. Mr. B.H. Hefner start-ed his plumbing business and later expanded it into HVAC as well. The compa-ny B.H. Hefner began was called Hefner Plumbing and Heating. Mr. Hefner was an extremely hard and honest worker. It was said that very often he would come home from a long days work and sit on his basement steps (in Derita, NC, where the home still stands) and “wipe joints” in preparation for the next working day.
Before Mr. B.H. Hefner passed away in 1954, 3 of his sons and 2 son-n-laws worked for the company along with many plumbers who have since went on to form their own plumb-ing companies. When B.H. Hefner passed away his oldest son Jack B. Hefner continued the business and it was later named Jack He-fner Plumbing Company. The company continued to prosper and “Hefner Plumbing” became a high-ly recognized name in the Carolina’s. At its peak Jack Hefner Plumbing Company employed well over 100 plumbers. The company performed everything from heavy commercial, new res-idential, government, and repair work. Jack Hefner Plumbing Co. closed in the mid- 1980’s when Jack and his wife Ruth decided to re-tire in Maggie Valley, NC.
