"All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. (Matt. 28:18-20)

This is perhaps the most important issue of the Challenge of Africa from a financial standpoint for the year of 2020. This is the time when we make a push to end the financial year with a strong and positive conclusion. Just like elders plan their budgets and encourage their congregations to meet their goals; the Chimala Mission depends upon those who love and support this work to help us fulfill spiritual and financial goals. I have been traveling to Chimala Mission since 2002 and have witnessed first-hand the gradual deterioration of its many facilities. We train preachers, teach and baptize people, help establish churches, heal sick and broken bodies, deliver babies, educate children in a Christian environment, and so much more at a fraction of the cost of similar efforts anywhere else in the world! So as you can imagine, we continue to have expenses and commitments that must be met. Here is a list of present needs (not in any particular order): • First. As an interested person in the

Chimala Mission, you know we have trained a lot of preachers. These preachers have children that need a good education. Not many years ago, a program was begun to support preachers’ children at the Chimala Mission schools. It was not a surprise that there was a great amount of interest in the program. However, the initial enthusiasm of stateside support

has greatly subsided. I personally do not want to see the program end as I see how beneficial it is to our preachers’ families. I have never seen the extent to which the Tanzanians are willing to forego all things in order to secure their children’s future. They will often go without food, medicine, shoes, or paying rent before they will deny giving money to help pay a family member’s school fees. They know their children are their only hope for a better future. But unless the commitments increase, we will have no choice. Please help me keep this program alive either by becoming a monthly supporter, or even by sending occasional one-time amounts.

• Second. In spite of our best efforts at preservation and repairs, many of our

In these difficult and uncertain times, we have to make decisions as concerned Christians about how we spend our limited income. In the New Testament, Paul says that the Macedonian Christians gave out of their poverty. Will you do the same? Of the nearly 60 million people in Tanzania, half are under the age of 18. The Chimala Primary and Secondary Schools educate these young people for productive careers and lives in Christian service. Tanzania is one of the front-line countries between Islam and Christianity. It is important that we lay the proper foundation in these young Christians now to ensure the future of New Testament Christianity in Africa. After obeying the gospel, many young men are educated to become preachers and Bible teachers in their home country through the Chimala School of Preaching. In Tanzania, 1 out of 9 children will die before their 5th birthday. The Chimala Mission Hospital delivers about 3,000 babies each year. Please help us keep the hospital operating to provide better care for mothers and babies, while bringing them the message of Jesus Christ.

Help Chimala Mission use our financial support more wisely!

Once again, I am treading in “dangerous” waters whenever I decide to highlight good deeds towards Chimala by a church or individual Christians. But I believe it is worth the risk because I believe we need positive and encouraging stories these days. There is no way I can get to everyone, but anytime the body of Christ can be commended favorably we can all rejoice. And there are many other individuals and churches that do the same kind of works—they are equally important and immensely appreciated! (cf. Prov 3:27; 1 Pet. 2:17).

A program started by the late Mickey Ford continues to be a tireless labor of love by the Dalhart Church of Christ in Dalhart, TX. For the last two years I have had the privilege of visiting this congregation and collecting the wonderful labors of their hands which they have been doing for many years.

The entire congregation helps in various ways including providing new boxes, packaging & loading, etc. But the Dalhart ladies meet every week sewing hand-made book bags, little girl dresses, flannel baby blankets, crocheted baby caps, baby diaper shirts, hand-rolled bandages, preemie warmers, and countless other items for the Chimala Mission hospital and schools.

This congregation has a long history of assisting the Chimala Mission including contributions for the construction of many of its existing buildings. We are greatly indebted to the Dalhart church family’s special gifts shown through hard-working and loving hands. Thank you!

buildings are over 50 years old and suffer from cracks, settlement, water damage, rot, and natural aging. Much of our equipment has been asked to do more and last longer than it was ever intended.

What was once paved roads that ran throughout the mission grounds is now all-but-gone, mostly turned into gravel or dirt. While we always prioritize funds towards people rather than buildings; we are being negligent if we don’t maintain the mission’s buildings and grounds.

• Third. A few years ago, Chimala Mission entered into a 3-year agreement with the Tanzanian government to provide free health services for new and expecting mothers. Words cannot describe the affect of good-will this program had on the Chimala community. After the government failed to fulfill their agreement, however, we eventually had to pull out of the program. Meanwhile, Tanzania still owes us reimbursement. It is not likely we will ever be repaid; but currently we still owe more than $50,000 to our primary pharmaceutical provider in Mbeya. For now, we buy medicines only in cash.

• Fourth. The rainy season is upon us as planting season has arrived in Tanzania. Our fields are

currently being made ready for planting. This year we want to plant at Ailsa utilizing as much land as possible in order to maximize next year’s harvest of maize and beans. I am awaiting the farm budget for an exact

amount. Our future hope of a self-sustaining mission is based upon a successful farm program.

• Fifth. Last spring of 2019 we finally received our last 40FT. shipping container full of items and

supplies collected from various churches and individuals. These supplies are often the “lifeline” of hard-to-get or specialized items for the various departments of the Chimala Mission. Since that last shipment, I have been collecting and transporting more loads to our storage in Montgomery, Alabama. Recently, we had to relocate all these items to another storage area much smaller than what we had. What has become very apparent is we need to send another 40FT. container soon! Lord willing once we return from Tanzania in March next year, I will need to start this process. This is not a small matter in terms of labor or expense. I will be

working on getting an estimate of the cost, but this will likely be in the neighborhood of $12,000—15,000 for shipping, clearing and transporting.

• Sixth. Keeping the mission secure at night is of supreme importance especially during power outages. During the dry season, electricity may be off for days or weeks and requires we run the generator all night as well as during critical operations at the hospital. In Menard’s last draw request, he reminded me that an overhaul of our generator was long overdue. Because we will have to order parts from Dar-es-Salaam, he is recommending we do the overhaul in December before our groups arrives in January. The estimated cost for parts is $1,580.

Everyone likes to hear good news, especially that seems to be true these days. Hearing good news is also something one is hoping to hear when having to go to the doctor or hospital for evaluation, treatment or surgery. But the best “Good News” is the Gospel of

Jesus Christ! At the Chimala Mission Hospital, our chaplains take advantage of opportunities when they can to preach the gospel to patients and visitors who want to hear. One of our chaplains in the above picture, Edson Mwalugamba is teaching mothers and their children in our clinic. That day there were about 50 expecting mothers and a number of mothers already with children. This is one of many notable opportunities where God’s word is presented to people who may not otherwise understand true New Testament Christianity. There is no better way for a mother to love her newborn baby than to set the example by obeying the gospel of Christ herself and walking in the Lord’s way. That’s the best news she could hear and take-away from an otherwise typical hospital visit.

Leadership Training For Christ

We have received word that LTC 2021 will be a live virtual event. It will continue to take place on Easter weekend. A new manual will be available on Jan 1st because there will be some changes. Here are some highlights of some of the changes.

Pre-Convention Events:

No changes to our existing pre-convention events. Christian Art, Bulletin Board, Scrapbook, Worship Banner, and Leadership Challenge will be moved to pre-convention events for 2021. We plan to have a special virtual showcase session for Christian Art, Bulletin Board, and Worship Banner during the virtual awards ceremony described below.

Convention Events:

Bible Bowl, Bible Reading, Puppets, Signing for the Deaf, Extemporaneous Speech, Prepared Speech, Live Modern Christian Drama and Chorus will be offered with modifications to make them offered live in a virtual setting. For example, the rules for chorus will be modified to allow for solo efforts and family groups, Live Modern Christian Drama participants will be able to offer monologues and virtual presentations. Unfortunately, we’ve determined Song Leading is not viable to be conducted in a virtual environment and will resume as a convention event in 2022.

Awards Ceremonies: We will have a virtual awards ceremony for all pre-convention and convention events on May 2, 2021. We are excited to offer this so that we can all celebrate the achievements of our students in front of their parents, friends, and family.
