It feels so much safer when we think we’re in control. But we pay a price for this micromanagement in stress and anxiety. We're never really freed from the pressure to strive. There is always pressure to do something. Or, if we have already done something, there is the pressure to keep on doing it. This is the way of the world. But God has done something entirely different. When the crowds pressed John for an answer about what to do, he didn't answer. Instead, he talked about what God has done. It's not what we do that matters, but what God did. It is this and this alone that gives life to the world. When you find yourself stressed this Advent, take John’s advice: Forget yourself and focus on God.

Sunday ReflectionWhat should we do? The crowds came to John wanting instruction. "What should we do?" they asked. This is a typical human reaction. We want to manage our lives, even our faith or salvation by taking action.

Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! (Zephaniah 3.14)This season is the most stressful in our society because it imposes stylized expectations of what we should have in terms of wealth, family, and happiness. Gaudete Sunday asks us to pause from the frenzy and consider the gift of the first coming of Jesus for our salvation and the promise of His second coming at the end of the ages. How we are rich, loved, and joyful in the Lord!

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, reminded us in his encyclical, Laudato Si’, that the baptized are called to care for our common home. The sacrament of Reconciliation invites us to consider not only the sins we have committed but also what we have failed to do. From our comfortable vantage point it is easy to become indifferent to the suffering of others. Gratitude for our blessings

reminds us to share and do more for others. Action: Apologize or make reparation for something you failed to do.

Rejoice in God’s Mercy

TIA

The work is done by more than 600 missionaries serving selflessly in communities across 26 Canadian dioceses.TIA is the hope we have in Christ manifested in aid of others. It is we, the Catholics of Southern Alberta, working together to make Southern Alberta better for all its citizens. Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk As we begin the Extraordinary year of Mercy I thought I might share the Spiritual Works of Mercy with you:

1. Instruct the ignorant 2. Counsel the doubtful 3. Comfort the sorrowful 4. Admonish the sinner 5. Gladly forgive injuries 6. Bear wrongs patiently 7. Pray for the living and the dead

On the surface none of them seems very difficult. In the same way when the people asked John the Baptist what they might do, he did not give them difficult actions, he called them to share what extra they had, to treat each other fairly, to not falsely accuse or threaten others, to take only what is theirs. These are not difficult on the surface but in reality they can be very hard. How many of us have rooms or closets full of things we will never wear or use? How many of us treat the poor man on the street the same way we would our parents? How many of us are quickly led into gossip? How many of us have turned away from a family member over some quarrel or squabble? How many of us think we deserve more than what we have, money or things? How many of us are carrying around a bunch of chaff that we need to let go of and get rid of? Still in all of this we can instruct the ignorant and tell others what Christmas really means to us. We can counsel the doubtful and invite them to come with us to church. We can comfort the sorrowful by sharing our condolences. We can correct each other out of love. We can work at forgiving. We can discover patience. We can pray for each other, living or dead. We are created wondrously and wondrous by our Father and we often are doing His work and we don’t even know it.

Peace Fr. Kevin
