Opening Hymn

First Reading Zephaniah 3:14-18a

Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel! Be glad and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The LORD has removed the judgment against you he has turned away your enemies; the King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged! The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, he will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals.

Responsorial Psalm Isaiah 12:2-3, 4, 5-6

R. (6) Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel.

Gospel Luke 3:10-18

The crowds asked John the Baptist, “What should we do?” He said to them in reply, “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He answered them, “Stop collecting more than what is prescribed.” Soldiers also asked him, “And what is it that we should do?” He told them, “Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages.”

Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people.

Offertory

People, Look East

1. People, look East. The time is near Of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, Trim the hearth and set the table. People, look East and sing today: Love, the Guest, is on the way.

2. Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare, One more seed is planted there: Give up your strength the seed to nourish, That in course the flower may flourish. People, look East and sing today: Love, the rose, is on the way.

3. Birds, though you long have ceased to build, Guard the nest that must be filled. Even the hour when wings are frozen God for fledging time has chosen. People, look East and sing today: Love, the bird, is on the way.

Advent Gathering Song

Come, come Emmanuel. Come, Emmanuel.

1. For the Lord of creation will come. 2. Oh the son of Mary will come. 3. See God’s marvelous deeds come. 4. For God chose us, and so we will come. 5. For the angel proclaims he will come. 6. As the servants of God we come.

Lord, have mercy upon us and come. Christ, have mercy up on us and come. Lord, have mercy upon us and come.

Second Reading Philippians 4:4-7

Brothers and sisters: Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

4. Stars, keep the watch. when night is dim, One more light the bowl shall brim, Shining beyond the frosty weather, Bright as sun and moon together. People, look East and sing today: Love, the star, is on the way.

5. Angels, announce with shouts of mirth Christ who brings new life to earth. Set every peak and valley humming With the word, the Lord is coming. People, look East and sing today: Love, the Lord, is on the way.

Closing Hymn

O Come, Divine Messiah

1. O come, Divine Messiah, The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, And sadness flee away.

Dear Savior, haste! Come, come to earth. Dispel the night and show your face, And bid us hail the dawn of grace. O come, Divine Messiah, The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, And sadness flee away.

2. O come Desired of nations, Whom priest and prophet long foretold, Will break the captive fetters, Redeem the long-lost fold.

Dear Savior, haste!...

3. O come in peace and meekness, For lowly will your cradle be: Though clothed in human weakness We shall your Godhead see.

Dear Savior, haste!...

Text: Venez, divin Messie; AbbŽ Simon-Joseph Pellegrin, 1663-1745; tr. by Sr. Mary of St. Philip, 1877

2nd Communion Hymn, if needed

Comfort, My People

1. Comfort, my people, and calm all your fear; the day of salvation is quickly drawing near. The One you long to see will soon set you free. O come, Lord Jesus, come. O come, Lord Jesus, come.

2. Silence the thunder, silence sounds of war. End all destruction and comfort those who mourn. Your dream draws near; your vision is here. O come, Lord Jesus, come. O come, Lord Jesus, come.

3. Be light in the darkness; be truth for our lives. Be strength for the helpless, the poor and lost who cry. O saving voice, O living choice, O come, Lord Jesus, come. O come, Lord Jesus, come.

Entrada

Primera Lectura Sof 3,14-18

Él tiene el bieldo en la mano para separar el trigo de la paja;

guardará el trigo en su granero y quemará la paja en un fuego

que no se extingue”.

Con éstas y otras muchas exhortaciones anunciaba al pueblo la

buena nueva.
