Kevin Cole October 9, 2009 - 7:30 p.m. America’s pianist KEVIN COLE has delighted audiences with a repertoire that includes the best of 20th Century American Music. He is an award-winning musical director, arranger, composer, vocalist and archivist who garnered the praises of Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, E.Y. Harburg, Hugh Martin, Burton Lane, Stephen Sondheim and members of the Jerome Kern and Gershwin families. Kevin Cole’s performances, especially his interpretation of Gershwin, have prompted accolades from some of the foremost critics in America. Backed by the talents of bassist Tom Knific and drummer Tim Froncek, Kevin will sing and play the music of Ira Gershwin, one of the great lyricists in American popular music. Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas November 6, 2009 - 7:30 p.m. The musical partnership between ALASDAIR FRASER, long regarded as Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassador, and the sizzlingly-talented young California cellist NATALIE HAAS may not seem an obvious one. The 25-year-old Haas, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, wasn’t even born when Alasdair was winning national fiddle competitions on the other side of the Atlantic. But this seemingly unlikely pairing is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser, whose cutting-edge musical explorations took him full circle to find a cellist who could help him return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music. The Hot Club of Detroit December 11, 2009 - 7:30 p.m. More than seven decades after the innovations of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, featuring guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt, combos called Hot Clubs carry on the gypsy jazz sound around the globe. None, however, offers a fresher take on the tradition than does the HOT CLUB OF DETROIT, led by fast-fingered Reinhardt disciple Evan Perri. The Hot Club of Detroit is made of guitarist Perri, accordionist Julien Labro, soprano and tenor saxophonist Carl Cafagna, rhythm guitarist Paul Brady and bassist Shannon Wade. The WMU Symphony Orchestra Thursday, February 4, 2010 - 7:30 p.m. The WMU SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA was named “Best Classical University Symphony Orchestra” in Downbeat magazine’s 2005 nationally recognized student music awards competition. Under conductor and Professor of Cello, Bruce Uchimura, the University Symphony performs orchestral masterwork and features internationally recognized and WMU faculty soloists. This very special performance will feature Mr. Scott Thornberg of the WMU faculty as trumpet soloist. Aebersold & Neiweem March 5, 2010 - 7:30 p.m. Described as “consummate practitioners of pianism” (The Washington Post), CLAIRE ABERSOLD & RALPH NEIWEEM enjoy an international career as exponents of music for both piano duet and two keyboards. Their innovative programming reflects the full gamut of this delightful repertoire, from four-hand works of Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms, to favorite lighter masterpieces by Poulenc and Milhaud, and contemporary works championed or commissioned by Aebersold and Neiweem. Ken Peplowski April 9, 2010 - 7:30 p.m. Noted New York Times music critic John S. Wilson called KEN PEPLOWSKI “a clarinetist with a Benny Goodman tone and a Buddy DeFranco style.” As Ken was a member of Goodman’s working orchestra, the comparison is not surprising. The late Mel Torme said, “Since the advent of Benny Goodman, there have been too few clarinetists to fill the void that Goodman left. Ken Peplowski is most certainly one of those few. The man is magic.” Ken casts a long shadow in the music world. He produced an astounding 16 solo albums with the prestigious Concord Jazz recording label and now records on the Venus Jazz label. Always a top contender in Downbeat Magazine’s critics and readers poll, Ken tours the globe 12 months a year performing in the top jazz clubs, performing arts centers, jazz festivals and symphony halls. The Euclid Quartet May 7, 2010 - 7:30 p.m. The EUCLID QUARTET is a dynamic ensemble known for perfomances filled with personality andvibrant color. Origi- nally from the U.S., Great Britain, Venezuela, and China, they have wonmany prizes at major competitions around the world, and hold the prestigious Quartet Residency at Indiana University South Bend. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review raved: “The impressivenessof the Euclid Quartet extended to all the styles ... [Their] emotional and timbral richness... brought to mind the old-world approach of the Guarneri Quartet... devoted, expert andexhilarating.” Ara Guzelimian, Artistic Advisor of Carnegie Hall, praised their “wonderful intensity, insight, and communicative strength.”
