M S We, the Parish Community of
Saint John Baptist de la Salle recognize that we are chosen by
Christ and have as our mission to bring forth the fruits of the True Vine in
response to the needs of our Parish Community through the
recognition of active Parish Organizations and the cultivation of
persons and groups not yet sharing in the mystery of the True Vine, Jesus Christ. "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him
will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing."

“You . . . must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”
— Matthew 24:44
“Pregnant” waiting
Ask any expectant mother if she wants her baby to come early and she will say no, she does not. As bad-ly as her back hurts, as long as it has been since she has seen her toes, she is willing to wait because the baby is not yet ready. The eyelashes are ready, but not the fingernails. The kidneys are ready, but not the lungs. Those wing-shaped sacks are still prepar-ing to make the leap from fluid to air. There is still more time to do in the dusky womb, where the baby is growing like a seed in the dark.
The child’s parents may never be ready, especially if this is their first. They want this, they are terrified of this. They planned for this; they can’t imagine how this happened. Meanwhile, they have a few baby-less weeks to go, which they can put to good use. They can make sure the nursery is ready. They can learn to sing some lullabies. They can think about what it means to bring a human being into the world, and what it will take to raise a child up into his or her full humanity. All they cannot do is hold a baby in the light, because the baby is still in the dark.
(Barbara Brown Taylor, from “Redeeming darkness,” The Christian Century, November 29, 2011.)
We celebrate the birth of God’s Christ in the darkest days of the year. But the dawning of the light of Christ enables us not only to not fear the darkness but to find God in the darkness. The season of Advent calls us to such “pregnant waiting”, not passive, disengaged waiting for we don’t know what but waiting that anticipates and makes possible now for what is to come. The experience of waiting enables us to realize what we appreciate, value and cherish, waiting teaches us how to be present and attentive to family and friends, waiting opens our vision and spirits to realize the love of God in our midst.

CHRISTMAS 2019 ST. JOHN BAPIST DE LA SALLE
Granada Hills, CA
Dear Parish Family,
Advent and Christmas is a time of joy for Catholics. The Nativity of our Lord is a mystery we could spend our whole lives pondering, but we focus on it especially at this time of year. By coming to us in flesh, Christ brings dignity to our humanity. His life, death, and resurrection bring meaning to our lives and provide for our salvation. In knowing that Christ was born for us, we are filled with great joy.
While we marvel at this outpouring of love and mer-cy from God the Father, we are naturally inclined to consider those who don’t know about His love. Those on the margins. Those who are struggling in mind and body. And so many more who need our prayers.
In a special way, I pray that our parish will share the love and mercy of God with those around us, our families, and our communities.

Children in sports are at risk for head injuries
Sports are a great way for children to burn off energy, learn about team-work, and stay active and healthy. But some sports come with risks,
including head injuries. Football is an especially high-risk sport for these types of injuries, given the nature of the game. If your child wants to play con-tact sports, make sure he or she does so safely. Pro-vide proper safety equipment that fits. Check hel-mets and protective gear periodically to ensure that all are still working. Talk to coaches and referees about regular safety checks for fields and team equipment as well. For more information about “Sports and Head Injuries,” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

HOPEFUL EXPECTATION
Our liturgical year begins with the season of Advent a time of hopeful expectation of the coming of the Lord. On the First Sunday of Advent we look for-ward to the end of time when we will awaken to the dawn of Christ’s new day.
Today we hear Isaiah speak of a day when God’s power will have brought universal peace and God’s Word will have instructed all people, radiating God’s “light” (teachings) into all of human society. Only when humanity walks “in the light of the L ” (Isaiah 2:5), when all people desire to be in-structed “in [God’s] ways” (Isaiah 2:3), will the world be set aright and our deepest longings ful-filled. The reading from Romans calls us to “awake from sleep” for this final “day is at hand” (Romans 13:11, 12). Together this Sunday’s scriptures pro-claim our Christian faith that Jesus is the One who will finally come to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.
