AMAZONAS

DECALOGDE TICUNA Amazonas, this region of dense rainfall, considered “the world's Lung,” is marked by the passage of the Amazon River, the largest of all, and its numerous tributaries, which in their course form hundreds of islands. Here is found one of the most important nature reserves, the Amacayacu National Natural Park, interned in the greatest ecological reserve on the planet, with an unimaginable abundance of vegetable and animal species. Admire the Victoria Regia, the largest lotus in the world, and the famous pink dolphins in the Tarapoto Lakes. To visit the Isla de Los Micos Natural Reserve in the Amazon is to live directly with nature; a variety of species in their natural habitat will accompany us in a tour along aerial and waterway paths where we can observe the Fraile Monkeys, practice Canopy and buy handicrafts from the Yaguas Indians. To be in the Amazon is to let yourself be carried away by a world which, without having met it personally, results very difficult to imagine.

NIGHTTIME SAFARI

The lakes in the tributaries of the Amazon are unique ecosystems, with a profusion of great variety of wildlife. From lake to lake there are many differences, depending on the size of each and the type of forest surrounding it. We will make a nighttime excursion in boats with capacity for 5 – 10 persons where along the banks we will discover the shining eyes of alligators, among which are found the black alligator, an important fierce predator in the Amazon. This reptile is very similar to the crocodile and can grow up to 6.5 meters in length. The alligators’ diet includes fish, danta (tapirs), and other mammals of the region. The black alligator is under protection because since the last century, hunting of this animal (for its meat or skins) has reduced the population. FRONTIERS TOUR Colombia, Brazil

The Amazon is full of stories protagonized by its settlers, installed on the river banks, in villages with names like Leticia and Benjamin Constant. Amid the silence of the Amazonian nights, the rumor of the river can be heard. Sometimes the mass of water light up with distant lightning which uncover the silhouettes of boats and houses belonging to inhabitants from two countries, whose existence goes by amidst an unchained river way. Just there the Amazon has its frontiers: Colombia and Brazil. In the zone exist a few colonies, although Colombian Leticia is the most solid. On the southern shore, Brazil has Benjamin Constant. There we will go through the village and visit the Ticuna Museum. We will end this day in one of the smallest localities of Peru, the ephemeral Islandia. The people of these colonies practice a dynamic community life. The colonial past remained behind, when Spain and Portugal disputed the supremacy of the great river, and seemingly some later border disagreements were also buried. Now canoes, launches and boats of diverse sizes communicate these villages cleaving the waters of the Amazon. The people of Leticia like to drink caipirinhas in Brazil, while the Brazilians frequent the Colombian city of Leticia to shop. The residents of each locality, on the other hand, are a mixture of three nationalities and speak Portuguese, Spanish and portuñol (a combination of both languages). Includes: river transportation on typical motor driven boats with capacity of 5 – 18 persons, entry fee to Ticuna Museum, professional Spanish speaking guide, refreshments, typical lunch, land transportation in Benjamin Constant to Cabanas restaurant. Recommendations: lightweight, light-colored (green or blue) clothing, shoes appropriate for walking, sun block, sunglasses, hat, repellent, identity document, cash in small Colombian denomination for souvenir shopping, waterproof. DIVING

Providence and Santa Catalina are surrounded by a coral platform which descends in terraces and walls to some 30 m in depth and from there drops to the great oceanic depths. The platform is crossed by channels and submarine canyons. The coral formations which surround Old Providence and Santa Catalina make up a vast oceanic reef complex, with a coral reef on the edge, secondary barriers and submerged ones, lagoon and ribbon coastal reefs, reef pinnacles, besides patch reefs and lagoon micro atolls. The barrier reef, nearly 33 km long, is the second largest in extension of its type in the Caribbean and one of the largest and most accessible in the world. Because of its singular importance in the western hemisphere, these zones were declared by UNESCO as nucleus zones of the reserve of the “Seaflower” Biosphere; that is, in strict conservation. In the same manner in the year 2005 the reef complex was declared as a Protected Marine Area with multiple uses. The most habituated sites (more than 30, until now more explored for autonomous diving, are found at the edge of the Sotavento platform, to the west, to which access is gained from boats which take from five to twenty minutes to reach them. Among the most visited sites are found Table Rock the Bight, Blue Hole, Cantil de Santa Catalina, Left Channel, Felipe’s Place, Cromis, Contour and Turtle Rock, among others. The Felipe Diving Dive Center has all the necessary infrastructure to permit divers and people who desire to enjoy a diving experience, to make their dives in a safe and fun manner. To arrive at Pueblito is to find yourself at a short distance from Santa Marta, with a fragment of history from the pre-Hispanic Tayrona culture. It is like traveling through time and discovering the meaning and the mode of life of the Indians who built, erected and lived in a place of difficult access, with some architectural characteristics which liken it to the mythical Ciudad Perdida (Lost City). Energy and emotions are felt in the environment when amidst thick overgrowth are discovered streets paved with stone, canals which outline an ancient aqueduct system, bridges and terraces where in some bygone epoch the dwellings of the aborigines who lived here before the arrival of the Spaniards, were erected. The song of the birds and the frogs provides a background for those who, after several hours of stony pathways, make it to the top and put their feet on this pre-Columbian village. The excursion includes a scenic tour on the panamerican highway to Venezuela, to reach Calabazo, starting point of the hike, which lasts 3 hours until reaching Pueblito.
