It’s not unusual for someone I meet on the street to tell me: “You were just in my living room last night.”
I’m always thrilled that you choose to have PBS Hawaii in your home. We do picture leaving our slippas on your porch as you beckon us inside as enduring friends!
PBS Hawaii and our viewers share something precious with each other.
You make contributions to sustain an independent, locally owned media alternative. And your gifts extend value to others who can’t aff ord to support public television.
PBS Hawaii provides a trusted place of discovery. We off er diverse subjects and storytelling that respect your intelligence and at their best are intriguing and illuminating. We bring reliable information and context, and we don’t try to tell you what to think.
Local ownership used to be the norm throughout much of the media world. But over the years, a handful of huge companies has come to control much of what we watch. That’s not inherently bad, but it is also not local.
PBS Hawaii is able to bring out local concerns and island voices that may not be heard in off shore headquarters. We set our own policies, make our own program decisions, and we rise or fall based on how responsive we are to local needs.
As your fellow Hawaii citizens, we’re thankful for you and for the precious time, curious mindset, and community values that we share.
With gratitude,
We love sharing with you!
Leslie WilcoxPBS Hawaii President and CEO
With gratitude,

Andrea Bocelli has always preferred singing over speaking. Since being robbed permanently of his eyesight at age 12, the Italian, genre-bending tenor has relied on the evocative power of music to share with others his unique view of the world.
It’s somewhat ironic, then, that the blind, classically trained singer would choose to pay homage to the silver screen by performing some of the greatest celluloid songs and scores of all time. Music that has burrowed its way into our collective subconscious only by its intimate link to our favorite moving pictures.
In Cinema, an Andrea Bocelli concert special, the international superstar lends his unique voice to a lush symphonic salute to the movies – reuniting with legendary music producer David Foster.
Bocelli will perform cinematic songs etched in the hearts of several generations, including theme songs featured in films such as Doctor Zhivago, Love Story, The Godfather, Life is Beautiful, Il Postino, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and many more, as well as popular songs from stage musicals, immortalized by their film versions, such as West Side Story and Evita.
Bocelli brings a fresh interpretation and a new life to many of these songs, in part because he fell in love with these songs as a child and did not know they came from fi lms.
“They were just pieces of music that gave me great emotion,” said Bocelli in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal.
The songs in this new concert – many from Oscar-winning scores – are also featured on Bocelli’s new album, Cinema, which will be off ered by PBS Hawaii as a thank-you gift to donors who pledge their support during the program.

Victoria Kneubuhl Playwright and novelist Victoria Kneubuhl has used her writing as a way to share the history of Hawaii and to give a voice to powerful women of the past. And while writing is her passion, she also sees it as a way to give something back. “One of the things that I really want people to know…who are from the islands or the Pacific, is that our stories are so worth tell-ing. If you write something that is heartfelt and genuine, you are leaving a gift for your community,” says Kneubuhl.

Sarah Keahi As a student at the University of Hawaii in the early ’60s, Sarah Keahi wanted to be an English teacher. But her Hawaiian language instructor, Dr. Samuel Elbert, saw a different path for her. “He said, ‘What about Hawaiian?’ And I said, There were no schools teaching Hawaiian, you know,” Keahi re-members. “And he looked at me, and he said, ‘There will be a day.’” Sarah Keahi went on to help establish a mandatory Hawaiian lan-guage curriculum at Kamehameha Schools, and taught Hawaiian language to generations of Kamehameha students.

Carlsmith Ball, Hawaii’s oldest and one of its largest law firms, is supporting PBS Hawaii’s statewide
broadcast of the final season of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece.
The fi rm’s strong support of Hawaii’s only public television station is endorsed by its team of attorneys and staff . Several donate annually to PBS Hawaii. Joanne Grimes, a partner with Carlsmith Ball, serves on PBS Hawaii’s Board of Directors.
“PBS Hawaii serves a critical role in informing the people of Hawaii,” explains Kenji Price, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney who joined the fi rm in September. “It’s an outlet for substantive news
on a variety of issues, and a source of timely commentary about social, economic and political issues.
“Because Carlsmith Ball serves the people of Hawaii, we feel strongly about endorsing an organization that helps our friends and neighbors stay informed about local and national news,” Kenji continues. “In particular, I look forward to watching Frontline’s eye-opening coverage of the confl icts in the Middle East and the drug war in Mexico.”
For the twelfth consecutive year, a nationwide study confi rms that PBS and its member stations are rated #1 in trust among nationally known institutions. If you or your business would like to become a PBS Hawaii community partner, contact Ben Nishimoto at [email protected] or call (808)-973-0292.
