I did something recent-ly that always creates angst when I do it. I responded at length to a post on Facebook. A friend was seeking information about Chanukah. Another friend of hers respond-ed to the same inquiry with less accurate information (in my o p in io n ) . I fe l t compelled to “set the record straight.” It took me a few minutes to hit the “post” button after I finished typing my r a t h e r l e n g t h y paragraph. Some folks don’t think before they post. I think too much.

“Setting the record straight” sounds and feels like an expression of arrogance. It should-n’t.

Alan Morinis - a teacher of Mussar, a system of Jewish char-acter development, s u g g e s t s t h a t

“humility” (in Hebrew, “Anavah”) is not meek-ness, but rather it is “the taking up of the right amount of space.”

Rabbi Chai Levy suggests, “Taking up too much space is arrogance, but taking up too little space is shrinking from our responsibilities and from the gifts we can offer.”

In Jewish tradition, the role model for space making as an act of humility is God itself. The most frequently cited example of God’s humility is found in the Creation narrative. When God sought to create human beings, the text reads, “Let us create human beings in our own image, as our likeness.” The most f r e q u e n t l y a s k e d question: Who is “us?”

Eleventh century com-

mentator, Rashi says from this verse we learn that God is humble. Rashi explains, “Since human beings are created in the likeness of the angels, and this would create jealousy among them, for this reason God consulted with them before creating human beings.” Rashi goes on to say that the verse t e a c h e s “ p r o p e r conduct and the trait of humility are practiced through the greater one consulting with and taking permission from the lesser one.” [Rashi Commentary on Genesis 1:26]

If God is so humble as to take/seek second opinions on the Creator’s own actions, shouldn’t we be at least that humble ourselves? We act with humility by making space in our lives to listen to others,

even if they hold a lesser station or rank or intellectual attainment than we do. [Everyday Holiness: The Spiritual Path of Mussar]

The original celebration of Chanukah reveals a similar lesson in humility when it came to deter-mining when to celebrate the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem (in Hebrew: Chanukat ha-Bayit)

When the Temple was cleaned and ready for re-dedication, the question was: When should this re-dedication take place? The priests in charge at the time said: “God will tell us when. We will wait for a sign.” This was the standard, only thinking at the time. The waiting went on for some time. There was no sign.

A second opinion began to emerge. Perhaps God had already sent a sign? Perhaps all of our efforts and preparations are the sign? Perhaps God is now waiting for us? Thus, just as Solomon dedicated the Temple when he saw it was ready, so too, the Temple was re-dedicated when the people were ready.

The winter solstice (25th of Kislev) was chosen as the day of re-dedication and the rest, as they say, is history.

The theological lesson of Chanukah is that God is waiting for us to take action. In an act of divine humility, God makes space for us to do the work that needs to be done to complete our-selves, our families, our community and our world.

Don’t wait for God. God has been waiting much longer for us. With humility, it is time that we take up the correct amount of space and embrace our responsibilities and the gifts that we can offer.

Debbie, Stephanie and Naomi join me in wish-ing for all of you a Chanukah filled with light, joy and wholeness.

L’shalom,

Joshua S. Taub, Rabbi

From Our Temple President

T E P 3

I would like to begin my remarks thanking Rabbi Matt Michaels for

doing a wonderful job during the High Holy Days. He has been such

a wonderful addition to our Temple and we all appreciate his dedica-

tion and hard work during this transitional time. I am happy to report

that Rabbi Joshua Taub is doing much better and was able to

participate in the HHD services as well.

The Thanksgiving Interfaith Service at St. Anthony’s Basilica was

absolutely beautiful. Our congregation is fortunate to have Cynthia

Wolf who blew the shofar to begin the evening. Rabbi Taub was able to join the

other prayer leaders in the meaningful event. Next year the service will be at the

Mormon church.

Having just participated as a lay leader for the first time the Friday following Thanks-

giving, I want to personally thank each and every one of our leaders that have

provided this service for our congregation throughout the last year. It is a heavy yet

delightful opportunity and I am thrilled to have been able to serve in another capacity

as your President. I will be handing over the gavel next month but am relishing my

last few weeks at the helm.

Your Board will be exploring the feasibility of installing an elevator – please voice

your opinions to the Board of Trustees. I have also ordered new amplification

devices to help those with hearing impairments These devices are being provided

thanks to the generosity of Past President, Charlie Weinbaum.

I hope to see everyone at our annual Chanukah celebration and dinner on

December 15th.

As our calendar year comes to a close, I would invite you to participate in our annual

Some Other Place event where we serve and deliver lunches to those less fortunate

on Christmas Day. Please let Jane know in the office if you are able to attend. This

is such a mitzvah and a favorite of the Social Justice Committee. Be sure to read the

SJ article to see what a difference we are making in our community.

Unfortunately we have lost another member of our Temple family, Leonard Swartz.

Our condolences to Gary and Bruce Swartz and their family for losing both parents

so close together. We will miss them both.

Temple Emanuel December 2017 Social Justice Update

P 4 T E

We are about to end our 2017 Temple Emanuel Journey that has been based on President Allison’s theme, Together in Tradition, and implemented as follows by Temple Emanuel Social Justice Committee: Together in Tradition through tikkun olam! We planned and provided tangible ways throughout the past two years to translate Torah into action, helping those in need in Southeast Texas and beyond. We have a tradition of making a mitzvahdifference as part of our Love Thy Neighbor initiative! Stay tuned for President Elect Cheryl’s theme and how it translates into our 2018 – 2020 TESJ projects!

Disaster Relief, a tradition of Temple Emanuel: THANK YOU again to President Allison for being the point person for Disaster Recovery efforts for our congregational families impacted by Hurricane Harvey! Relief continues! So much help has been shared with Temple Emanuel and Southeast Texas, and so much more is needed for 2017 hurricane, earthquake, and wild-fire victims...including fire-destroyed URJ Camp Newman (Santa Rosa, CA). One such way to continue the outreach is through Temple Emanuel’s Social Justice Fund! Please specify how you want your mitzvah dollars shared. THANK YOU!

High Holiday Food Drive, a tradition of Temple Emanuel: THANK YOU from Dan Maher, Executive Director of the Southeast Texas Food Bank. The 1555 pounds of mitzvah donations that filled the stage in the Swerdlow-Roosth Social Hall translated into 1300 meals, enough to serve a family of 4 for a period of 108 days! The formula that the Southeast Texas Food Bank uses helps us all understand just what our donation means! THANK YOU!

Nutrition & Services for Seniors (NSS), a tradition of Temple Emanuel: On Tuesday, November 14th, we worked with TEAM Deliver the Difference and the NSS Staff and other NSS volunteers as mitzvah Assembly Lines to fulfill 800 shelf stable meals, to prep 1440 Thanksgiving desserts, to bag 36 portions of fresh greens grown in the NSS Grow to Share Garden and oranges that came from personal gardens of friends of NSS, and to assemble 140 boxes that will be filled with desserts being sold for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas…all of which benefit the Meals on Wheels clients of NSS! Did you know that Meals on Wheels drivers drive between 15,000 – 17,000 miles each week throughout Hardin and Jefferson Counties to serve NSS clients? Did you know that NSS provides 300 rides per day to clients needing to go to the grocery store or to doctors’ offices or to the pharmacy? Mitzvah volunteers on Novem-ber 14th for our TESJ project included the following: Lottie Arline, Cheryl Barenberg, Nancy Castillo, Arlette Collins, Joe Domino, Linda Domino, Karen Fuljenz, Ann Goodman, Glenn Hayes, Laina Hayes, Marilyn Manson Hayes, Susan Margolis, Dora Nisby, Don Nixon, Rose Payton, Elaine Shellenberger, Gene Thomas, Maribel Volemuler, and Cynthia Wolf! THANK YOU! And to Barbara Warren who helped to coordinate our project and to Andrea Deaton who took pictures, THANK YOU!

Christmas Day at Some Other Place (SOP), a tradition of Temple Emanuel: We will again serve meals AND deliver meals to the clients of Some Other Place. There will be an eblast about exact time of arrival. We need to know in advance just how many volunteers will be helping at SOP AND how many vehicles/volunteers will be delivering meals. After our mitzvah service, let’s plan to eat together at Luby’s! THANK YOU!

The Orchard, a tradition of Temple Emanuel: The countdown continues for our 2018 Tu Bishvat tree planting in The Orchard! Each fruit or nut tree will be professionally planted. Please consider a donation of $70 per tree payable to Temple Emanuel with memo for Social Justice – Trees. All donations for The Orchard are appreciated! THANK YOU!

The end of the year is approaching fast. It's been a year of happiness for some and devastation for others. I hope this new year brings blessings of love, joy, warmth and laughter to all. We had a busy month in November. Thank you for everyone that helped with the mammogram van. We had a great turnout and a successful day helping with The Gift of Life program. Our fall Cheese cake fundraiser was a big hit. We sold over 60 cheese cakes. A huge thanks to everyone that helped bake, deliver and helped with the pick up days. Jane, you were such an important part of this big fundraiser. You collected orders over the phone, fax-es, emails, charge cards etc. Your gratefulness is unmeasurable for everything you do for our Sisterhood and Temple.

Our Brotherhood/Sisterhood Shabbat was so beautiful, joyful and amazing. It's always a pleasure work-ing with Wayne Margolis these past two years for this special evening. Our Pre-Shabbat reception is always a great way to start our evening. Cheryl does a fantastic job with the appetizers and the Italian dinner was superb. A round of applause to everyone that helped make this a wonderful evening. All those that were in the Service thank you so much for your participation. Bingo was a big hit as always. Thank you to Rabbi Matt for being the Bingo caller and making this a fun evening. Wilton, you are truly a person that deserves a big thanks too. You are always so helpful, especially during this time of year when things are so busy for you.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had beautiful weather the entire week here in SETX. We all have a lot to be thankful for. So keep your prayers close to your heart for everyone this past year.

In December we will end with our Chanukah dinner on Friday, Dec. 15. Please bring your menorahs and candles.

Brotherhood Our Brotherhood/Sisterhood Shabbat was a great success based on the feedback I received. I want to give a

special thanks to my partner in planning and execution Robin Goebel, it is always such a pleasure working

with you. A special thanks to Cheryl Barenberg for the incredible meal. A special thanks to Wilton and

Jane for all your hard work that you do every day for our temple and all the hard work that you did for our

Brotherhood/Sisterhood Shabbat. Thank you to Rabbi Michaels for your assistance with the service and for

the great job in calling Bingo. I personally thought that Robin Goebel’s, D’var Torah was awesome and

multiple people that I talked to agreed. Thank you to all our service participants, in order of appearance: Ken Parker, Mike Getz, Sherry Horwitz, Judy Night, Alan Sampson, Lori and Brian Alter, Cynthia and Michael Wolf, Allison Getz and Gene Thomas, your participation made the service extra special. Last but

not least thank you to Angela for the music.

I hope all our congregation and their families had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Despite the hardships that many

of us have suffered through recently due to Hurricane Harvey, we still have so much to be thankful for.
