Meet our latest member, Steve Didion. He just moved to HSV 2 months ago

and says he is having a lot of fun, especially on our ride today. He has a

2012 Gold Wing 1800 and has been riding for 20+ years. He moved here

from Wichita, Kansas. He has known about HSV for some time, but just

decided to retire here. He is a Navy Veteran.

Oh, and he is a part of a club called ROMEO

RECKLESS OLD MEN EATING OUT. BOY DOES HE FIT IN!!

Well we had a great day. First we were surprised to have Tom T.'s sister and hubby (Katie and Gary) join us. We are always glad to see them and if they get to ride with us it is

even better!

We rode over the mountain to Ola and as we were taking a little break this red Vet came up beside us, Guess who, Val-erie! She still has a horrible cough but she is going to lunch

with us.

She took off ahead of us and took pictures as we came around a corner on hew 154. Now she is behind us and had to deal with 20 to 25 miles on Bethel rd (LOTS of pot holes and re-pairs). But we did get back on Hwy 22 and at least 55 miles to

the restaurant.

There were 15 of us so we took up a large part of the restau-

rant, but we were served very well.

Valerie was talking to some of the people that do the Hobo

Fest in Russellville. You never know who you might run into!

We headed home and kept Val with us till hwy 7 and the passing lane and then she

let it go ( the Vet has a hard time with Jacks pace.)

It was a really nice day!!!!!!!!!

Firstly, Charlie is to be commended for his skills in leading a bunch of people down the road. Before starting out on our quest for golden leaves Charlie gave us break points, lunch time, our ETA for Eureka Springs. Without rushing anyone he kept all of us on schedule, arriving at a particular destination within minutes of the schedule. Charlie,

thank you!!

For Leaf Peeping the timing of our ride was perfect . . . it was probably Monday that there was an article in the newspaper stating the leaves were at their best for viewing on Saturday and Sunday. Thursday we traveled on Hwy 123 which lead us down into a val-ley. We thought the vista was great, cameras were working overtime to take in the views. Returning on Saturday we traveled on Hwy 23 . . . the yellows and golds were

breathtakingly beautiful.

There were nine of us who were able to take advantage of this club ride: Charlie Stockton, Jack & Sharon Fields, Marvin Ladely, Rick Hernandez, Joe & Maxine Piland, Max and I. A very congenial group. Ozark Cafe . . .really good food, huge servings, was our lunch destination. Dinner was at Emilio's, a family owned restaurant serving genuine Italian food, using all of 'grandma's recipes from the old country'. For sure this is a 'do again' restaurant. On the way to Emilio's, 'just a mile down the road', we were led on a haunt tour of old Eureka . . . just

like a scavenger hunt with Emilio's as the prize. It was all fun.

Friday the group road up into the Missouri Ozarks. Someone else will need to tell about the day as Max and I stayed behind to shop in town.. The Main Street Cafe serves up a

mean Reuben sandwich!

There was more sun Saturday and the temperature was considerably warmer. How many superlatives are there for exquisite scenery? Turner Bend store, where we took a rest break, is very quaint . . . want to go there again some time. Mount Magazine Lodge provided lunch, which turned out to be a most memorable event. Just ask Sharon . . . she was given a card that will provide lunch for 'our entire group' at half price. Returning to Jessieville riders began leaving our group

to wend their individual ways home.

We're looking forward to the club's next outing!

We had color after Russellville and we ate lunch in Jas-per at the Ozark Cafe, good chicken fried steak sand-

wich!

The ride to Eureka Springs had good color but the color

was about gone in E.S.

We got to the hotel and decided to go to an Italian Res-taurant that Charlie said was very good and about 1 and

1/2 miles from the hotel.

We were all ready for a nice dinner and headed out. It was already dark. We drove downtown then around town and back on 62. Then Rick stopped at a Quick Stop and we asked for directions. We then headed out again and we went through the back streets above the town. After a good 30 min. we were at Ermilio's for a WONDERFUL

dinner.

(We never let Charlie have a break about our 1 1/2 mile ride to Dinner)

When we got back to the Hotel there was a fiddler in the lobby and some of us stayed for

a while. “Fiddler listenin’”

Fri morning Jack took us on a ride AND Rick was his tail gunner!!!

We went to Beaver Lake and Dam and then we took Rockhouse Rd to Berryville, then over to Green Forest and up and over to 21. Then back to Berryville for lunch at Ozark Cafe (yes we have a trend going here) everyone except Maxine had Fried

Chicken!!!! GOOOOD!

We headed back to E.S. but went up to Mo on 143 and back to E.S. on 23. We got back around 3:00 pm so Jack, Rick, Charlie and Marvin went to the Cathouse and the rest

of us went on our own way. Hey Jack—what the heck is the “Cathouse”????

We split for dinner Fri night. Charlie and Rick had too much Chicken and didn't want a big meal and the rest of us went to try out Sparky's Roadhouse. I had a friend tell me it

was good and Rick had eaten there and said it was good. It was Good!

The colors were not the best but I think everyone enjoyed the trip and the rides. Rick’s problem was counting to 100 several times on the Fri ride BUT he never complained

once!!

We came home Sat and the weather was overcast but still nice. We ended up eating lunch at Mt Magazine and other than the REALLY BAD service, it was good.

Our waitress was somewhere other than the restaurant.

The colors coming up from Paris were nice but going down to Danville they were so so.

The whole trip was a really good time.

Another year is slipping into the history books

for Chapter E Eagle Wings and all of our

members. We’ve had some great times this

year and other times have not been so great

for some of our members.

First, let me say thanks to Robert Herring for

taking over the Directorship of the Chapter.

He took the leadership position knowing and

telling us up front that he knew that he would

be out of the county for much of the year.

However, we had Charlie and Cheryl Stock-

ton and Mike and Diane Keesling who were

willing to share the responsibilities of the As-

sistant Director and knowing that they would

be sharing the responsibility of running the

Chapter while Robert was away. From my

view, they did a seamless job of coordinating

their duties and schedules throughout the

year. From an operational standpoint, the

Membership never even noticed that we had

three different people/couples in charge from

month to month. I believe this is proof of a

job well done. I hope to see all five of you at

a gathering soon so the Membership can ap-

plaud all of you for a job well done and I for

one will give you a standing ovation!

I know that the first thing they would say is

they could not have done it without the help

and assistance of the Support Staff. They

handle all of the day to day operations of the

Chapter such as Education, Membership,

Ride, Event and Meet to Eat Coordination,

Web Site and Newsletter. We had new vol-

unteers for new Road Captains to spread the

fun and lighten the load so the same ones

didn’t keep taking us to the same places like I

do. Mona Pastor volunteered to take on the

Meet to Eat Coordination job and the project

of decorating the tank for our District project.

Wow! I think the Leadership would agree,

when you have a staff like that, it really

makes a job much easier.

It makes me proud to be part of this Chapter

where members will volunteer and take on

any task we need done. All you need to do is

ask or let someone else know that we need

something done and it will be gladly done by

a volunteer. Better yet, don’t wait to be

asked …. Ask how you can get involved.

It was a great year for growth in our Chapter. All the GWRRA Members south of us in

Arkansas who did not have an assigned Chapter were added to Chapter E. I know they

read our newsletter and email correspondence about what is happening in GWRRA and

Chapter E. We all wish the geographic distance was not such a factor in establishing a

personal relationship with our “new” fellow members. I know of at least two new couples

who joined us in out of town trips this year and it was really great to meet them and have

them join us on these trips.

Motorcycle riders come and they go. Some have simply moved in or out of our area.

Some have sold their motorcycles, some bought new ones, some have gone to trikes,

etc. The point is that our Membership is fluid and dynamic, ever changing. Differing

backgrounds and skills of our members continually offer a great pool of resources for our

Chapter to continually pull from in order to maintain high quality leadership that will lead

us into the future.

The new year is right around the corner. John and Cathy Carr are waiting in the

“Wings” (pun intended!) to assume leadership of our Chapter. I would encourage each

and every member to assist them in every way to make our Chapter as successful as it

can be. I can’t wait to see what new ideas they have for our Chapter when they get

started. Let’s help them in every possible. Volunteer to do things, from the small jobs up

to and including Officer level jobs. Membership is just paying your dues and that is im-

portant as we want to maintain all members. Satisfaction and pride develops and grows

as each member gets involved in the organization and does things for the Membership.

In 2014, both as an individual and a group, “let’s be all that we can be”! (pun intended,

again!)

Our Chapter’s shirt is all signed and is on the

wall of the Hub’s restaurant on the left side

as you are going out. The very first shirt,

closest to the door.

Looks really good, folks!

Tech YOU need to know!

By Tom Harrison, Chapter AR-E

Educator

Preparing for a recent ride to Paris, Ar-kansas, Ramona and I gassed our Goldwing at Top of the Hill Shell station and then pro-ceeded to circle down and behind the Burger King on Route 7 to the staging area. As I rode up the alley hill that runs parallel to the Burger King parking lot, I was paying to much atten-tion to checking for riders and bottomed out hard on a raised manhole cover. I did not crawl under the bike to check for damage but there were no liquids coming out and bottom-ing normally involves the center stand so I did

not give it another thought.

When we took a bathroom break on top of Mt. Magazine, someone noticed that my bike was briskly urinating on the parking lot!!! A finger/sniff test of the fluid determined that it had to be coolant that was leaking. The fluid was also cool which ruled out motor oil. Since the overflow tank for the radiator sits at the bottom of the frame and is vulnerable to physical damage, I concluded that it had been

damaged earlier and had just ruptured.

As I stood there with the other riders pondering what to do, I remembered checking radiator fluid levels on other people’s Gold-wings and finding several with dry reservoir tanks yet the rider had no indication of a prob-lem because the engine temperature did not

rise. It was then I determined that it was safe to ride the bike to Paris and then onto Russell-

ville Honda.

Russellville Honda confirmed my sus-picions and fortunately had a replacement overflow tank in stock and replaced it for less than $100. They said that this was a com-mon problem and they had bikes arrive with NO reservoir tank at all!!! Why Honda chose

to put the tank where it is exposed to damage is a mystery. The good news is that if you ever damage your reservoir tank, you can safely ride it as long as the temperature gauge does not indicate overheating. In my case, the temperature needle stayed steady state at normal temperature. If you check your reser-voir level and find it to be dry, as long as the bike was not overheating, just add fluid and it will be siphoned into the radiator as needed to

replenish the level.

Explanation of the GWRRA Rider

Education Levels Program

The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. Through Commitment, Education and Appli-cation, we can reduce our accident rate sig-nificantly. Listed below are several benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Edu-

cation Program at the Chapter level:

- Increased rider knowledge and

safety skills

- Prevention of accidents with re-

duced injuries and fatalities

- Improved general public image of

motorcyclists

- Enhanced enjoyment of motorcycle

riding

Level I: Safety by Commitment -

The first big step to success

Requirement: Rider makes a commitment

follow good safety practices and ride safely.

Level II: Safety by Education

Requirement: Rider - a Certified Rider Course with 5,000 safe miles. Co-Rider - certified Co-rider Seminar or 2-up Rider

Course

Level III: Safety by Preparedness

It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives. This is done by being knowledgeable in First Aid or CPR and carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle at all times. contact with

daily.

Requirement: Current in Level ll and have taken either First Aid or CPR training. Level IV: Safety By Enhanced Commit-

ment and Preparedness

Requirement: Highest commitment of Rider and/or Co-Rider to safe riding and prepared-ness. You must also have Motorist Aware-ness training and a demonstrated history of

safe miles.

Why desire to be a Level IV Master Tour Rider? It's a worthy goal. Being prepared to save a life is a high calling indeed! These individuals are shining examples to the rest of the GWRRA membership. Others aspire to practice the same commitment as dis-played by those who have attained Level IV. For that reason, because these individu-als are ambassadors to the members at all levels, Requirement: Current in Level lll for one year and have taken both First Aid and CPR training. Have 25,000 Safe Miles and must be committed to riding with "Proper

Riding Gear" at all times.
