CCS Policy for Responding to Parents

It is the policy of the School that admin staff will pass on a telephone request or email request to speak to a member of staff the same morning or afternoon that it is received. Most teaching staff have commitments to classes during the working day and are therefore unlikely to be able to respond to a message immediately. Staff will be expected to acknowledge receipt of an email or phone call by the end of the next working day. A follow up contact will be made to try to resolve an issue or arrange a meeting where a parent requests it within 2 whole working days. It will help our response if parents give us brief details relating to their enquiry or email us at [email protected] with details and phone number as appropriate. Primary Phase parents may continue to pass information messages to staff at the start and end of day. Any urgent messages of information can be communicated via the primary office. Primary class teachers are extremely busy before the start of the school day preparing lessons and therefore we request that any appointments to meet teachers are made at the end of the school day as far as possible. Where there is a need to speak to a senior member of staff as a matter of emergency, parents are respectfully asked to explain briefly the nature of the emergency to admin staff so that they can be directed to the appropriate member of the senior leadership team. An emergency is defined as a situation where the safety of a child is at immediate serious risk. In all but the most serious cases, parents will not be directed to speak to the Principal.

Parents who arrive at school wishing to see a member of staff without an appointment will be asked to leave a contact number or email to suggest times when they might be available for a member of staff to contact them.

FOCUS ON VISUAL ART?.............

POST 16 ART STUDENTS VISIT SALCEY FOREST

AS Art students recently visited Salcey Forest to draw and photograph the natural environment as

part of their project based on the theme ‘Experiences, Meetings and Encounters’. Students have

been studying the work of a number of established artists including David Hockney. Hockney’s

recent exhibition at the Royal Academy included an extensive collection of work inspired by the rural

landscapes of the area in which he lives. This experience will further enhance the exploration of

Hockney’s work, and the work produced as a result will contribute to the students’ coursework

portfolios.

YEAR 7 STUDENTS VISIT THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

On Saturday 24th November, a group of 35 gifted and talented Year 7 Art students visited the

National Portrait Gallery in London. In school Year 7 students are currently working on a project

which explores the theme ‘Self-Identity’, and portraiture has featured in their work. This opportunity

enabled these students to extend this element of their work by viewing first-hand the extensive

collection of portraiture on exhibition, which spans over six hundred years. Students spent the day

producing a series of drawings from their observations, which will be further developed; the plan is

for the students to produce 3D ceramic heads inspired by their drawings. The initial drawings and 3D

work will then be exhibited in CCS Gallery next term; parents will be invited to view the exhibition

before it is opened to the public.

LIFE DRAWING WITH THE ROYAL ACADEMY

In October a group of our more able AS and A2 Art students had the opportunity to

attend an intensive life drawing workshop with a tutor and life model from the

Royal Academy of Art. This was an excellent opportunity for our students to

extend their observation skills and produce a wide range of studies based on the

human form, using a variety of media and techniques. Charlotte Steel, RA Tutor,

was very impressed with the level of maturity and skills demonstrated by our

students; they produced some strong work, which will add to their portfolio of coursework.

VISIT TO THE TATE MODERN GALLERY

A number of our year 11, 12 and 13 students were recently taken to the Tate Modern Gallery in

London, to view the permanent collection of works as a stimulus for their own art work. Students

thoroughly enjoyed viewing the diverse approaches and media/techniques on exhibition. Viewing

live works is an important part of our students’ art education; this experience will further develop

their knowledge and visual understanding, and the work inspired by their observations will enhance

their coursework portfolios.

Year 8 & 9 Gifted & Talented Art Club

Thursday and Friday evenings after school.

Year 8 and 9 students who have been identified as being more gifted and talented in Art; alongside

students who have demonstrated enthusiasm for the subject, have been offered the chance to take

part in painting master classes after school with Mrs Trott.

Students normally rotate out of the subject several times throughout the year, and the workshops

are designed to improve student’s skills, through more practised approaches.

The first session took place during year 7 Open Evening, where students painted from a vase of

Sunflowers in the centre of the room; whilst observing from a photocopy of Van Gogh’s original

painting on their easel. This allows students to draw from life, whilst maintaining the style or

approach of the artist they are studying.

More recently they have been painting in the style of William Turner and have been learning how to

develop an under painting into a finished work of art.

Boys Football County Cup Quarter Final Monday 3rd December

The game started at a ferocious pace with Lodge Park having the better of the opening 15/20 minutes. CCS were a little sloppy in possession inviting unnecessary pressure on themselves. Lodge Park took the advantage with a looping cross that found the back of the net off the CCS goal keeper. Once again Lodge Park were using the width of the pitch much better turning the CCS back four and causing problem after problem. The back four held their own and kept solid with organisation coming from the two centre backs. CCS hit an equaliser from a corner when C Byfield attacked a curling ball from the left to fire home from close range. Half Time 1-1. The second half saw CCS come out a different team, firing on all cylinders and looking dangerous in every attack. Silly mistakes were cut out and they took the lead with a great goal from E Baldwin. A ball from the left found E Baldwin who coolly slotted home. CCS carried on and looked certain to score more but for missed chances. Unfortunately, the lead only lasted 15/20 minutes when a ball over the top found their striker. He had a fantastic first touch and fired it into the top right corner. The game ended 2-2 and extra time was played out with both teams cancelling each other out.

Year 7 Rugby v Campion Tuesday 23rd October

The score line doesn’t suggest a true reflection of the game. CCS Y7 team is predominantly made up of students who are new to the sport of Rugby Union, and at no point in the game did they let their heads drop. This character will prove invaluable as the squad develop and learn the game and hopefully develop into a side that can beat the likes of Campion. From the start Campion demonstrated their superior knowledge and skill level with them distributing the ball slickly to outflank our slightly narrow and inexperienced side. In the contact area CCS demonstrated their enthusiasm and what they have learnt so far with some excellent tackling and disruption to Campion’s possession at the ruck area. Ultimately the superior handling & tactical awareness of the Campion side lead to them being able to outflank us repeatedly. Final score CCS 0 Campion 49. Player of the Match : W. Burgham

Year 9 Boys County Cup Football v NSB Thursday 15th November

CCS played NSB in the quarter final of the Y9 County cup. Neither team had been beaten this year, and NSB were defending County cup champions. It was always likely to be a tight match after both meetings last year ended 5-4, one victory a piece. Despite Mr Jousiffe's warning about slow starts during his team talk, CCS were behind within 10 minutes. Heavy pressure from NSB paid off when a shot from the edge of the area found its way into the bottom corner. Going 1-0 down this early was a bit of a shock to the CCS team, and they had to endure some more pressure before they finally began to get a foothold in the match. Halfway through the first half the match began to swing the way of CCS, and the midfield trio of O Coles, J Roper and A Tate were beginning to get their passing game together. With CCS firmly in control of the midfield, the dangerous T Hollis was put through on the right hand side and after his first shot was saved he placed the rebound over the keeper into the far corner. A great finish, and CCS were level. CCS were now completely in control, and the immaculate pitch at NSB was perfect for the CCS passing game. The second CCS goal came just before half time and was a bit special. In a move that started at the back, and must have involved 50 passes, CCS swept from right to left and then back to the right again looking for a gap in the strong NSB defence. When the through ball finally came it was perfectly weighted to T Hollis who calmly squared to R White who put into an empty net. A fantastic goal that a premiership team would be proud of. Half time 2-1 CCS After half time CCS continued their dominance, and another excellent move involving the excellent R White and R Nicklin was finished perfectly with an 18 yard curling shot from J Ward. 3-1 CCS and NSB were rocking. CCS continued to pass the ball around well in midfield, but struggled to create many more clear cut chances against a resolute and well drilled NSB defence. The lack of cutting edge began to get to CCS and slowly NSB worked their way back into the game, and on the break looked dangerous. With 10 minutes to go NSB got the goal that they had been threatening and CCS had been dreading. A good break ended with the NSB striker beating two CCS challenges and drilling the ball over R McCarthy in the CCS goal. At 3-2 it was always going to be a difficult last 10 minutes for CCS, and NSB regained control of the game. However despite their desperate attempts to grab an equaliser CCS defended solidly as a team, and held out for a fully deserved victory against the reigning county cup champions. Well done boys!! Sixth Form Football Team v EWS (N) Wednesday 21st November

Squad: A Chaffer, R Mwandimutsira, A Marlow, B Taylor, P Howgego, L Bernard, L Williams, N Schampier, R Watson, A Young, J Roberts, J Tilley, H Thomas The CCS Year 13s made the short trip to take on EWS (N) in a friendly. After torrential rain all day the match was in doubt but thankfully the astro-turf came to save the day. A late no-show from an unnamed goalkeeper meant that A Chaffer heroically stepped up to wear the gloves (which we also did not have) and A Marlow, who moved to Caroline Chisholm in Year 12, played at centre-back against his old school. The match started with CCS defending strongly but struggling to maintain possession; EWS eventually showed this when a long shot crept in to the bottom corner after A Chaffer believed it was going wide, he eventually saw the funny side after the match! EWS then slotted a second shortly after and their scorer controversially copied Balotelli with a “Why always me?” shirt. There was another disaster for CCS when L Bernard’s footwear gave up on him, ruling him out for the rest of the game. Nevertheless, J Tilley proved an able replacement, providing pace and zip down the right flank. CCS started to string more passes together later on in the half and were able to create chances, but despite this, the half time whistle blew with the score at 2-0. The second half kicked off with A Young in goal and A Chaffer taking his place up front. CCS remained in the ascendancy and it eventually told with a fine finish from N Schampier to make the score 2-1. EWS hit back, and were able to score again, a dubious call from linesman Mr Smith denying Tilley the chance to claim a heroic goal line clearance. An own goal following a large period of time in EWS’s box made the score 3-2 and gave CCS a glimmer of hope. P Howgego, however, had other ideas; he let the ball through his legs and could not catch the EWS striker who slotted in their fourth. The final whistle then blew shortly after. Final score EWS 4-2 CCS. Player of the match B Taylor Report Mr Smith

Under 17s Football v Northampton Academy Tuesday 23rd October Goal Scorers: R Chamberlain S Hamp J Wilde The match started off quickly with both sides creating chances right from the off. The first goal of the match went to Academy with a cross turned shot leaving S Tayal helpless in the Chisholm goal. The game restarted and the away team was determined to draw the game level. Caroline Chisholm created a number of opportunities and soon the score was level due to a great R Chamberlain header. Chisholm continued to create chances as half time approached. As the teams returned from the half time break, Caroline Chisholm were focused on winning the game. The pressure was building on Academy and there were cracks quickly appearing in their defense. The breakthrough came from S Hamp hitting a 25 yard thunderbolt in off the crossbar. All Chisholm had to do was hold on for the last 25 minutes and the game was theirs. With ten minutes to go the game was deadlock with both sides creating chances. Academy were then awarded a corner and this was converted when the defense switched off for the briefest of moments. With ten minutes to go Chisholm were looking dangerous. The crowds grew to witness the end of the game, including a special appearance from Mrs Chamberlain, which spurred the boys on to grab a win. As the game drew to a close, Chisholm knew they had to create chances. With just seconds to go, an exquisite flick from J Cox landed at the feet of J Wilde who struck a low shot perfectly into the bottom corner. The game restarted and within seconds the game was over. It was a wonderful performance from all the boys, in particular the man of the match, C Cronin. I would also like to give a special mention to E Baldwin, R Chamberlain and S Hamp who joined the squad in a late call up. They performed wonderfully, even being a year younger than the rest of the squad. Final score 3-2 . Well done boys! Player of the Match : C Cronin Report J Titmuss

Penalties in the dark resulted in CCS losing 4-1. A horrible way to leave the last cup competition the Year 11 team will have. Players were understandably upset but what they need to remember is that they did their school, the manager and most importantly themselves proud. They gave 100%, played some outstanding football with determination and passion! Every squad member deserved more! Player of the Match: R Chamberlain Report Mr J Horsley
