Dear Parents and Students:
As we start to close out the calendar year, please make sure that you continue to
check the guidance department’s website for up to date activities that will help
promote your student’s education. In the upcoming months, we will be working
with seniors on college applications and financial aid. For underclassmen
there are opportunities for governor’s school and information about Monroe
Technology center. PSAT results will be returned before the winter break and
most juniors should consider planning on taking the SAT in the spring. Finally,
interim reports will be issued on December 14th and 15th. Please continue to
contact the guidance department with questions or concerns.
The mission of the Loudoun County High School Counseling Department is to
support and assist all students in reaching their academic potential and to pro-
mote excellence through education, collaboration, and empowerment.
Family Connection For those of you unfamiliar with this program, it is a web-
based service designed for educational planning, which we
use extensively with students beginning in the ninth grade. It
is a comprehensive website that you and your child can use
to help in making decisions about courses, colleges, and
careers. It is linked with Counselors’ Office, a service that
we use to track and analyze data about college and career
plans. It also allows us to share information with you and
your student about up-coming college rep. visits and events,
local scholarship opportunities, and other web resources for
college and career information. In addition, the site includes
a link that can be used to send us an e-mail message. Those
who have logged on previously and need assistance, or who
wish to register with the site for the first time, should contact
Mr. West, our Career Center Representative, on 571-252-
2012 or email [email protected]. Beginning this
month, counselors will hold evening workshops for parents
to introduce them to this very important program. Please
visit the LCHS Guidance website for more information.
College
Application Due
Date
In order to insure college applica-tions with early January due dates are processed prior to the Winter Holidays, applications must be received in the guid-ance office no later than Thursday, December 7, 2011.

LCHS Guidance department will be hosting a
Financial Aid Workshop on Wednesday,
December 14 2011, 7:00pm. Eric Stegner
is the Student Services Coordinator at Ap-
ple Federal Credit Union and will present
valuable information on the financial aid
application process, types and sources of
financial aid, questions and answers about
special circumstances, and free re-
sources. This workshop is open to all
high school students and parents.
During the last week of school in De-
cember students will receive their
PSAT test booklets and results. The
Score Report Plus will give the stu-
dents information on each individual
test item, specific suggestions for im-
proving their skills, and next steps to
take to prepare for the SATs and col-
lege. English and math teachers will
review the test results with students
and help with specific questions. An
explanation of how to interpret the
test scores will also be distributed to
9th and 10th grade students in a sepa-
rate flyer. Parents are encouraged to
go over the Score Report with their
child and to use the two excellent re-
sources provided by College Board.
Please check out My College Quick-
start, available at www.collegeboard.
com/psatextra and MyRoad a t
[email protected]. If you
have any questions, please give the
counselor a call.
NCAA
Clearinghouse
In order to participate in NCAA athletics in college, students must register with the NCAA during their senior year in high school. Students are encouraged to register on-line at www.ncaa.org. A “Request for Transcript” form must also be filled out and turned into the guidance office as part of the filing process. Students should also meet with their counselors to review NCAA approved core courses.

toward specific course areas, and it measures mastery of english, reading, mathematics, and science.

Parents Parents Parents Parents ---- Due to errors in the literary contest posted in the November newsletter, the literary contest is re-posted in this issue. All of the questions relate to authors read in our English classes.
Have your child help you answer these questions, and send your answers to [email protected] by December 16December 16December 16December 16thththth....
A winner will be randomly drawn from all the entries having correct answers. The prize is a $10 gift certificate for the School Store.
Good luck!Good luck!Good luck!Good luck! 1. The hero of this bestseller by Ayn Rand, a conceited architect who justifies his faith in honest
design by the end of the novel, is supposedly modeled on Frank Lloyd Wright. What is the novel’s title?
2. His line “Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other” might have been ap-plied to one of his experiments with a kite—but he escaped without injury. Who was he?
3. In this Edgar Allan Poe poem, the narrator and the young woman, who is the title character, "loved with a love that was more than love." Name the poem.
4. This compact novel uses flashback and irony to tell the tragic story of three people’s wasted lives in less than two hundred pages. Although not representative of this New York socialite’s work, it is probably the best and most popular of her novels. Give the title of the book and the author’s name.
5. The Catcher in the Rye is as controversial as its author, now deceased. Who is he?
6. Name the American physician, professor, and essayist who wrote the poems “Old Ironsides” and “The Chambered Nautilus.”
7. Atticus described real courage to his children as being "when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." From what novel does this come?
8. Who wrote this flowery sentiment: “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”
9. What famous shy poet wrote, “I’m Nobody! Who are you?/Are you—Nobody—too?”
10.The characters are Robert Walton, Victor (an inventor), Justine, and The Monster. Give the title of the novel and its author’s name.

CLASSES AT LCHSCLASSES AT LCHSCLASSES AT LCHSCLASSES AT LCHS
Your son or daughter will be asked to cast a vote – to elect something of far
greater consequence than Homecoming Queen or even president of the Student
Government Association. Your child will be selecting “elective” courses, which
is more important than it ever was with the increased global competition and our
present economy.
The fact is most high school students see this exercise as “filling in the blanks.”
They choose “what my friends are taking,” “whatever looks easy,” or “whatever
fits my schedule.” These are typical teenage responses.
However, time is too precious, youth too short, and life is too competitive to miss
the big benefits of Business and Information Technology courses if your student
has an interest in pursuing a college degree related to courses taught in high
school. Courses offerings range from Accounting; Advanced Accounting; Busi-
ness Law; Business Management; Com-
puter Information Systems; Advanced
Computer Infor- mation Systems; and
Design, Multime- dia, and Web Tech-
nologies, which can give your student
the opportunity to explore career fields,
earn certifica- tions, earn college cred-
its, and gain an advantage over other students who have not had the opportu-
nity to take these classes and can help pave a student’s path to success.
If you or your son or daughter is interested in a Business and IT Career Path
Course Guide to assist with course selection based on the career path your
child plans to take in college, please feel free to e-mail me at
[email protected]. In addition, visit my Web Page for course
information or I would be genuinely delighted to talk to you at any time
about how these courses could fit into your child’s academic plans and
can be reached at Loudoun County High School at (571) 252-2000.
Among all the votes your son or daughter will cast in life, the vote for how
to use his or her time in preparation for the next educational level may be
the most important of all.
Therefore, I look forward to talking with you soon, so don’t delay as class
space is limited and many students who were too late in registering last
year were not allowed in the classes this year.
AVID Students and Junior Class Participate in LCHS Service
Week Students in AVID, a college
readiness elective course, and the Jun-
ior Class collected 346 coats/vest, 65
scarves, 50 hats, and 60 pairs of
gloves for needy families in Leesburg
during the months of October and No-
vember. Senior AVID student Mason
Tilghman commented, “It’s great to
know
that a little effort on our part is
going to make a big difference to
someone in need.” The AVID 4 stu-
dents have already begun their next
service project with the senior citizens
at Meadow Glen Assisted Living Resi-

The Marching Raider Band received a Superior rating at the VBODA States Marching Festival at Millbrook High School on November 5. This capped the end of a very successful season in which they won their class in every competition they entered.
It is a bittersweet experience for our seniors but they have set a great legacy for the others to follow.
