GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER

UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

December 13, 2020

3rd Sunday of Advent

Did you ever stop and realize that there is no earthly gain that

can ever really satisfy us? Think of winning the Lotto. On this

side of the winning ticket, it’s all about the money, the new car,

house, vacations, bank accounts, and infinite pleasures. The

possibility of acquiring all of these earthly securities brings us

back again and again to the purchase of a ticket. Then, one day

we win! Our dreams are fulfilled, and happiness is on the

horizon. Then one day, we wake up and realize that nothing

has really changed, and I am not as satisfied as I thought I was

or would be. I find myself living in my incompleteness and

with my profound sorrow and grief. I did not find joy.

Glimpses of joy are possible but not by material means. They

are brought to us through incredible experiences of connection

that bring us face to face with real and authentic faith, hope,

and love. And, they are glimpses and do not last. The moment

we find ourselves looking back at them, they are gone, and we

find ourselves remembering the moment in memory. To carry

joy within us is to realize that it is not something I create,

manufacture or even acquire. It is not able to be purchased. It

is a gift. My need for joy mirrors my need for eternity, for a

Creator who has a claim on the very essence of who I am and

desires a home within me. As C. S. Lewis discovered, joy is a

surprise that speaks to my very soul and is given as gift by the

God who loves me.

The beauty of Advent is found in discovering the beauty of the

gift of joy. God has visited his people for no other reason than

to show them where and how to find joy! All of our human and

earthly joy experiences are always only glimpses. They never

satisfy us, sustain us or fulfill us. It is only God who is the joy

of my soul. Real, Divine experiences of joy catch us off guard,

make us stop and become aware, bring a feeling of awe and

rightness and have an eternal Otherness about them. Nothing

created by humans can ever come close to this. We probably

will not fully realize the truth of all of this until we actually

meet God face to face in heaven one day. Then, in that sacred

moment when our hearts leap for joy we will understand what

we have been tirelessly searching for all along. Intense

gratitude will most surely follow.

Page 6: Dec 13, 2020  · The Pastor's Pen Dear Friend, Two hundred years ago, in the early 19th Century, as astonishing as it may seem, Christmas in Great Britain had become almost extinct

The Pastor's Pen

Dear Friend,

Two hundred years ago, in the early

19th Century, as astonishing as it may

seem, Christmas in Great Britain had become almost

extinct.

The Times newspaper did not mention Christmas

once between 1790 and 1835. Not once!

However, Charles Dickens was instrumental in

reviving Christmas during the Victorian era. He wrote

his book ‘A Christmas Carol’ in 1843 for several

reasons.

Unemployment and famine was widespread. About 1

in 10 people were as poor as you can possibly imagine,

or worse than we can probably imagine.

Dickens wanted to challenge the Government and

society to act with generosity and with compassion,

and so his character Ebenezer Scrooge brings that

challenge into focus.

In our own time, not many people want to be like

Scrooge at the start of the book.

I guess we all hope we can become more like the

joyful, genial, generous Scrooge from the last scenes

of the book or film.

Dickens’ book helped to revive Christmas traditions

of generosity.

The central characters in Dickens book learned the

importance of praying always and not loosing heart.

Father Matthew

As an appreciative Catholic

Community of Faith,

Our Lady of Peace parishioners

pray for our military,

police, fire-fighters,

first-responders, medical services and

all who serve in local, state and

national security services.

SACRAMENTS

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated

at Our Lady of Peace on the 4th Sunday of each month at 1:00 p.m. We ask

couples who are contemplating having their child baptized in the Catholic

faith to contact the parish office to register for the Sacrament prior to

attending the required Baptism Preparation Class, which is held the 2nd

Tuesday of January, April, July and October.

THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: The bride or groom must be an active-

registered member of Our Lady of Peace in Fords NJ, with weekly Mass

attendance and involvement in the life of the Parish for one year before the

marriage preparation process. Please call the Parish Office for more

information. According to the Common Policy of the five Latin-rite (Roman

Catholic) dioceses of New Jersey, there must be twelve months of marriage

preparation for each couple who desires to be married in the Church. Please

do not make any wedding arrangements (including reception hall) until you

have met with a parish priest and he has approved the wedding date with

you.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,

I believe that you are

present in the

Blessed Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

And I desire to receive you into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

And unite myself wholly to You.

Con!nually give me the grace to make

a worthy Confession.

Amen
