    THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF

    WATCHING TOO MUCH TELEVISIONFirst off, let me state that I'm not saying that televisionin its entirety is bad for you. There are times when it's

    nice to kick back and watch the game with your friends.

    This article is more geared toward those who spend

    an abnormal amount of time in front of the tube on a

    daily basis. You know exactly who you are.

    I know there are countless studies on how television

    is bad for you, but here are some of the harmful effects

    that I see that most studies don't cover when it comes

    to watching too much TV. A SAFE ESCAPE :

    The biggest trap of watching too much TV is that it

    becomes a safe way to escape your own life instead of

    looking at it square in the eye. If you find yourself

    watching hours of television everyday, it might be good

    to think about whether or not it's a subtle indication to

    yourself that life is not what you want it to be, that it's

    not interesting enough so you feel the need to immerse

    yourself in the lives of others.

    People who gossip have the same problem. Their

    lives aren't interesting enough so they feel the need to

    know everybody else's business and spread the word

    to whoever will listen. The person who watches

    television for hours on end is no different. They end up

    so wrapped up in the lives of others that it becomes

    their entire life.

    People literally "sleep through life" by watching hours

    of television a day. It's a tragedy that they cannot see

    the time they spend there can be used to better their

    own life, so they don't have to feel the need to escape it.

    MIND DETERIORATION :When you watch TV, you'll find that it does all the

    work for you. You don't need to "create" in your mind

    like you do when reading. When you read, your brain

    has to use its imagination to come up with the smells,

    the tastes, the sounds, the pictures, and the feelings

    described in the book or article but when you watch TV,

    all of that is already done for you (at least the hearing

    and seeing part). If you ever wonder why your brain feels

    so "empty" after watching television, that's exactly why.

    Your brain shuts off because it has no job to do. Use itor lose it indeed.

    Along the lines of that, have you ever tried to do get

    things done after watching TV? It's as if you've become

    "mind paralyzed" and you have to wait for your brain to

    slowly get back in gear. I call that time period the "dead

    zone" and even after that, you're still not working at peak

    efficiency.

    AN EASY ADDICTION :

    This is the worst part of watching too much television.

    TV can be just as addictive as any illegal substance on themarket today. It's easily accessible, pleasurable, and makes

    you forget your troubles for the day. Sound familiar?

    You watch one show and when it ends, the TV says

    "Coming up next....stay tuned for blah blah blah", so you

    become curious, you watch it and you like it and BOOM,

    you add another rotation to your weekly TV schedule.

    Those hours add up and once you get vested in the

    shows, they've got you for life.

    Watching television for hours on end is the easy way

    out and many people choose to take it. Why? Because

    watching television for hours a day switches off ourbrains so we don't have to think about our own lives

    and when it's time to turn the TV off and reality comes to

    bite us in the rear, what do the majority of us do then?

    We retreat into the safe confines of television once again.

    TV can easily become the biggest time thief of all

    and yet, people don't realize it. They don't become

    indignant at the opportunities in life that they lose. It's

    amazing how people take the time to buy the best

    security for their home so their precious belongings don't

    get stolen, but when it comes to protecting their mindand their time, two of their biggest assets, the doors are

    wide open for easy pickings. People have go to realize

    that the quality of their lives can become so much better

    if they just take the time to stop watching TV and channel

    that toward creating the life they want to live.

    Here's a thought. Unplug the box and put it high up

    in your closet so it's a pain in the butt to reach it. You'll

    learn to live without it. The sun will shine that much

    brighter, food will taste that much better, and life will be

    that much sweeter.When it's all said and done, watching too much

    television provides you with a safe escape from looking

    at your own life, deteriorates your mind, makes you

    unproductive, and can lead to a dangerous addiction. It

    truly is one of the most dangerous drugs out there on

    the market today and the sad thing about it is, most

    people don't even realize it.

    WHAT IS GOOD EMOTIONAL HEALTH?

    People who are emotionally healthy are in control oftheir thoughts, feelings and behaviors. They feel goodabout themselves and have good relationships. They cankeep problems in perspective.

    Its important to remember that even people who havegood emotional health can sometimes have emotionalproblems or mental illness. Mental illness often hasa physical cause, such as a chemical imbalance inthe brain. Stress and problems with family, work

    or school can sometimes trigger mental illness or makeit worse. However, people who are emotionally healthyhave learned ways to cope with stress and problems. Theyknow when they need to seek help from theirdoctor or a counselor.

    WHAT ABOUT ANGER?

    People are sometimes not aware of what causes theiranger, how much anger they are holding inside or how toexpress anger appropriately. You may be angry aboutcertain events, your own actions or other peoples actions.Many little things can build up to make you feel that life

    is unfair.If you find yourself becoming increasinglyirritable or taking unhealthy risks (such as drinking toomuch or abusing drugs), you may have a problem dealingwith anger. Its very important to talk with your doctor ora counselor about getting help.

    WHAT CAN I DO TO AVOID PROBLEMS?

    First, notice your emotions and reactions. Try tounderstand them. Learning how to identify what is causingsadness, frustration and anger in your life can help you

    TIPS ON DEALING WITH YOUR EMOTIONS Learn to express your feelings in appropriate ways. Its

    important to let people close to you know whensomething is bothering you. Keeping feelings of sadnessor anger inside takes extra energy. It can also causeproblems in your relationships and at work or school.

    Think before you act. Emotions can be powerful. Butbefore you get carried away by your emotions and sayor do something you might regret, give yourself timeto think.

    Strive for balance in your life. Make time for things

    you enjoy. Focus on positive things in your life. Take care of your physical health. Your physical healthcan affect your emotional health. Take care of yourbody by exercising regularly, eating healthy meals andgetting enough sleep. Dont abuse drugs or alcohol.

    HOW DOES STRESS AFFECT MY EMOTIONS?

    Your body responds to stress by making stresshormones. These hormones help your body respond tosituations of extreme need. But when your body makestoo many of these hormones for a long period of time,the hormones wear down your body and your

    emotions. People who are under stress a lot are oftenemotional, anxious, irritable, and even depressed.If possible, try to change the situation that is causing

    your stress. Relaxation methods, such as deep breathingand meditation, and exercise are also useful ways to copewith stress.

    CAN EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS BE TREATED?

    Yes. Counseling, support groups and medicines canhelp people who have emotional problems or mentalillness. If you have an ongoing emotional problem, talkto your family doctor. He or she can help you find the

    However, many things that happen in your life candisrupt your emotional health and lead to strong feelings

    of sadness, stress or anxiety. These things include: Being laid off from your job Having a child leave or return home Dealing with the death of a loved one Getting divorced or married Suffering an illness or an injury Getting a job promotion Experiencing money problems Moving to a new home Having a baby.Good changes can be just as stressful as bad

    changes.

    of stress, sadness or anxiety are causing physicalproblems, keeping these feelings inside can make youfeel worse. Its OK to let your loved ones know whensomething is bothering you. However, keep in mind thatyour family and friends may not be able to help you dealwith your feelings appropriately. At these times, asksomeone outside the situationsuch as your family

    Live a balanced life : Try not to obsess about theproblems at work, school or home that lead to negativefeelings. This doesnt mean you have to pretend to behappy when you feel stressed, anxious or upset. Itsimportant to deal with these negative feelings, but try tofocus on the positive things in your life too. You may wantto use a journal to keep track of things that make you feelhappy or peaceful. Some research has shown that havinga positive outlook can improve your quality of life and giveyour health a boost. You may also need to find ways to letgo of some things in your life that make you feel stressed

    and overwhelmed. Make time for things you enjoy.Develop resilience : People with resilience are able to

    cope with stress in a healthy way. Resilience can be learnedand strengthened with different strategies. These includehaving social support, keeping a positive view of yourself,accepting change, and keeping things in perspective.

    Calm your mind and body :Relaxation methods, suchas meditation, are useful ways to bring your emotionsinto balance. Meditation is a form of guided thought. Itcan take many forms. For example, you may do it byexercising, stretching or breathing deeply. Ask yourfamily doctor for advice about relaxation methods.

    Take care of yourself: To have good emotional health,its important to take care of your body by having aregular routine for eating healthy meals, getting enoughsleep and exercising to relieve pent-up tension. Avoidovereating and dont abuse drugs or alcohol. Usingdrugs or alcohol just causes other problems, such asfamily and health problems.

    SPIRITUALITY AND HEALTHWHAT IS SPIRITUALITY?

    Spirituality is the way you find meaning, hope,

    comfort and inner peace in your life. Many people find

    spirituality through religion. Some find it through music,

    art or a connection with nature. Others find it in their

    values and principles.

    HOW IS SPIRITUALITY RELATED TO HEALTH?

    No one really knows for sure how spirituality is related

    to health. However, it seems the body, mind and spirit

    are connected. The health of any one of these elements

    seems to affect the health of the others.Some research shows that things such as positive

    beliefs, comfort and strength gained from religion,

    meditation and prayer can contribute to healing and a

    sense of well-being. Improving your spiritual health may

    not cure an illness, but it may help you feel better, prevent

    some health problems and help you cope with illness,

    stress or death.

    HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY SPIRITUAL HEALTH?

    If you want to improve your spiritual health, you may

    want to try the following ideas. However, remember thateveryone is different, so what works for others may not

    work for you. Do what is comfortable for you.

    Identify the things in your life that give you a sense

    of inner peace, comfort, strength, love and connection.

    Set aside time every day to do the things that help

    you spiritually. These may include doing community

    service or volunteer work, praying, meditating, singing

    SPIRITUAL BELIEFS?

    If you are being treated for an illness, its important

    for your doctor to know how your spirituality might be

    affecting your feelings and thoughts about your medical

    situation. If you think your spiritual beliefs are affecting

    your health care decisions or your ability to follow your

    doctors recommendations, tell your doctor.

    If you have spiritual beliefs, worries or concerns

    that are causing you stress, talk with your doctor.Your doctor would like to help. If your doctor cant help

    you with these issues, he or she may be able to suggest

    someone who can.

    WHY GIVING WILL ALWAYS LEADTO RECEIVING, EVEN WHEN IT

    COMES TO MONEYWe see evidence of this on a daily basis. We get angry

    at a person, they get angry at us. We treat others withrespect, we in turn get treated with respect. If we arenice and courteous to others, others are nice andcourteous to us.

    Now when it comes to money, people seem to hesitatein believing that this law still holds true. People seemdisinclined to give their money away, whether to a charity,religious organization, or any other worthy cause

    because they believe they'll never see their money again,that it's gone the moment they give it away and that they'llnever get it back. It's as if there's a mental block thatsome like to label as selfishness, greed, hoarding, fear,whatever you like to call it.

    Why do people hesitate to give their money away?Because they don't immediately see what the return

    is that they get.Before I continue, let me make something VERY

    CLEAR. You will ALWAYS, without a shadow of a doubt,get something in return for what you give and that lawholds true for money just like everything else.

    You see, we've been conditioned to only give outmoney when we immediately see what it is that we getin return. We pay for gas because we immediately seethe returns of using that gas to visit our family, oursignificant other, to commute to work, to run errands, togo on vacation, etc. When we pay for that candy bar, weget that sweet taste in our mouth within seconds. Thatsweet taste is the return we immediately derive from

    Breathe deeply and fully when you walk.To breathe properly is to live properly.

    giving our money to the cashier. When we pay for thattennis racket, the countless number of tennis games wecan play with it is the return we immediately see.

    But when we give money away to a homeless person,to a religious organization, or to a charity we don'timmediately see the return we get, and what's morepeople don't think that they will ever get a return.

    But don't you see? That's the beauty of it. You chooseto give your money away despite the fact that you don'timmediately see the return you get. You can't possiblysee how that money will come back to you but it does.Remember, it is law. If it works for everything else, whatmakes you think it won't work for money?

    But still, people are skeptic. If that law is true theysay, does that mean when I donate, let's say $20 to theRed Cross to support victims of Hurricane Katrina, thatanother $20 magically appears in my wallet as soon as Igive it out? No. You see, this kind of skepticism servesto weed out the people who have that genuine spirit ofgiving as opposed to those who don't. What do I meanby genuine spirit of giving?

    When you give without expecting anything in return:If you genuinely give your away, that kind of genuine

    generosity spills over to other areas of your life. You

    become more generous with your time, words, andactions toward your friends, families, and coworkers.Compare and contrast those who willingly give money

    away to a worthy cause because they want to as opposedto those who refuse to give a dime away because theydon't see how it will benefit them. Compare theirpersonalities. Is one more selfish than the other? Wouldpeople be willing to help the selfish one? Is one morecaring and helpful than the other? Would people gladly

    help the one more caring and helpful? Absolutely.If you're willing to help a total stranger living

    thousands of miles away without expecting anything inreturn, how much more will you be willing to help thosethat are close to you? And when you help those who areclose to you by giving them your time, money, support,sympathy, anything, you will get back the moneyyou gave away.

    It might not come back in the form of money, butsomething even more valuable. You become so generouswith your friends that they help you get a better job withmore pay. That increase in pay is the return you get. Ifyou're generous with your coworkers, they might

    nominate you for worker of the year and you'll get a raise.That raise, when added up for the remainder of your stayat that company will probably be worth hundreds,if not thousands of more dollars than what you originallygave. That is the return you get. If you're generouswith your friends, you will cultivate a friend for life,something priceless that can't be compared with themoney you gave away.

    You see, it's difficult for me to give you a "one glovefits all" theory of how you will get back what you gave,but mark my words, it will happen in one form or another,

    because you've been able to overcome the selfishconditioning that money seems to have on people.You see, the point I'm trying to make is if you give

    away money purely because you want to, that's the key,not giving out money because you expect to getsomething back, but doing it purely out of want, you'vebeen able to conquer the quality of selfishness thatseems to condition the majority of people when it comesto money. Selfish thoughts of "What's in it for me?"

    To leangthen thy life, lesson thy meals. A feeble body enfeebles the mind.

    It takes a lot to be able to overcome that negativeconditioning and the only way to overcome that negativeconditioning is to develop a willingness to give. Becauseyou want to. Because you genuinely want to. That's thekey. It's that wanting to give, that mentality that will helpget your return.

    You know what happens when someone genuinelygives?

    They will inevitably get their return and when theydo, they will link that blessing to their giving, whichfurther reinforces their drive to give. It will strengthentheir belief that giving always leads to receiving so theywill be more inclined to do so.

    Let me give you an example of what I'm talking about.A friend of mine bought me and a few other friends lunchone day and he did it purely because he wanted to. Hehad no hidden agenda, no favour to ask, just wanted tospend some time with his buddies and catch up.

    A few minutes later, he got a business call andstepped outside to talk for some time. when he cameback, he was grinning from ear to ear because hebasically landed a small gig that paid $500. Here's thekey point. When he came back to the table, he said witha big smile and I quote "If you give, you shall receive".

    He linked up the giving away of his money to buy lunchfor us to receiving that $500.Now did buying that lunch cause that call to come?

    Logic dictates that it had no influence whatsoever. I failto see how buying lunch at a restaurant for a bunch offriends can compel someone who lives 50 miles awayand has no idea he is doing this to pick up the phoneand call him to offer a job. The events were neutral buthe analyzed them to confirm his belief that giving truly

    leads to receiving. Often more than what he gave.Now here's the cool part. Would he have still gotten

    that call had he not bought us lunch? Logic would dictateyes as the events were unrelated. And when he did getthat call, what would he have chalked it up to? Somethingtotally unrelated to giving.

    May be luck or just another business call or maybeit's good day. He would've never associated giving withreceiving and that might have prevented him doing futureacts of service.

    You must develop a genuine desire to give.What that means is to give because you want to

    without expecting anything in return.If you do that, your genuine desire to give will spill

    over to other areas of your life naturally.That helps contribute to your inevitable return which

    comes in the form of money or of some other shape,which will then magnify your experience and strengthenyou belief of the law of giving and receiving.

    Your belief gets magnified because you link the blessingyou got to your giving so you do it again and again andyou keep on getting because you keep on giving.

    The important thing is that you FIRST overcome theselfish conditioning that money brings by developing a

    desire to genuinely give.Now after reading this, some might jump to the wrongconclusion of thinking that if they give, they'll receivemore, so they use that as their primary motivation togive, but that defeats the entire purpose.

    Why? Because you haven't developed a desire togenuinely give FIRST. That's the first step. If you aregiving solely for the purpose of receiving, you're onlygiving to get, that implies HUGE LACK on your part. If

    you think you have lack, you will get it. By giving only toget, you sow lack in your mind, so you will get it back.

    Your 're trying to skip step 1, which is to develop agenuine sprit of giving and it's the most crucial andimportant step because everything hangs upon it.

    There are no shortcut in life.Not everybody can cultivate the desire to genuinely

    give, but if you do, rest assured, your return will behundreds of times more valuable than what you gave inthe first place.

    Give without expecting anything in return, and therest will fall into place naturally.

    A diet rich in vegetables, grains and fruits is truly what

    nature intended for us to have.

    POSITIVE THINKINGThere are some common held negative beliefs about

    positive thinking. We mention a few of them here:1. There is a common notion (belief) that positive

    thinking makes one soft, a bit weak. But quite theopposite is true. The more we understand andexperience our own inner qualities and powers andrealize our own weaknesses, the stronger, morestable and less dependent we become on others.

    2. Some of us also hold the belief that a positive thinkerwalks with a broad smile on his face all day long andthinks everything is great. But positive thinking isan inner matter, a mental attitude. It is a way of lookingat lifes circumstances.     Place the other hand on your chest. Breathe in slowly and try to make your stomach rise a

    WHAT IS MEDITATION?Meditation is a form of guided thought. It can take

    many forms. You may do it with exercise that uses thesame motions over and over, like walking or swimming.You may meditate by practicing relaxation training, bystretching or by breathing deeply.

    Relaxation training is easy. Start with one muscle.Hold it tight for a few seconds then relax the muscle. Dothis with each of your muscles.
