11 Summary

“For me, Win a Wedding is what papers like the Bristol Post are all about. Giving a local couple the chance to win their wedding, to essentially change their lives, is fantastic. And it gets the city talking. This year, it was bigger than ever, attracting almost twice as many couples as the year before. That’s why I am so grateful for the sponsors’ support.”

In an incident that ensued, Foxgrabbed a heavy pint glass from thebar and struck it on Mr Allen’s headseveral times.

Although the glass didn’t smash, even when it was dropped, Mr Allensuffered three cuts to his head whichhad to be glued shut.

After the attack, Fox stole MrPa g e’s bag and dumped his posses-sions in several bins.

Fox, 31, of Kelting Grove, pleadedguilty to wounding and theft.

Mr Allen suffered three head cutsand a severe headache, the courth e a rd .

Afterwards, Fox took Mr Page’s bagand dumped its contents, including a£400 computer tablet and helmet cam-era, in rubbish bins.

Fox told police Mr Page had endedtheir ten-year relationship and he(Fox) had drank to drown his sor-row s.

He said he had “lost the plot” inHush Hush and struck out, and themotivation for stealing the bag was tocause inconvenience and he wassor ry.

Alexander Small, defending, saidhis client felt “ugly and worthless” asa result of the relationship andsuffered from anxiety and depres-sion.

Mr Small said the assault was un-planned and there was no intention tocause a great deal of harm.

He added that his client had paidMr Page £1,040 to compensate for thetheft.

‘Wonderful haven’ City sanctuarycelebrates 175th anniversary

FOR 175 years, Arnos ValeCemetery has been the finalresting place Bristol’s depar-ted loved ones. From it’searly days as a humble

garden cemetery, through neglectand then renovation and renais-sance it has grown into a huge buttranquil haven, housing the gravesof 300,000 people.

At one stage the landmark wasthreatened with closure but wassaved thanks to a campaign whichwas backed by thousands of peopleacross the city.

The first person who was laid torest in 1839 was Mary Breillat, wifeof the man who had brought gasstreet-lighting to Bristol.

Since then the cemetery has seenthe burials of industrialists, phil-anthropists, scientists and soldiers.

Its 175th anniversary was celeb-rated at the weekend, when Bristol’spublic figures gathered in itsgrounds for a garden party.

HM Lord Lieutenant Mrs MaryPrior unveiled a new donation boxfor the cemetery, and informationwas given out about the ongoing oralhistory project, a 24-month com-munity history effort to collect con-temporary and historic materialsrelating to Arnos Vale.

Mrs Prior said: “I admire so muchwhat the trustees, staff and volun-teers have done to get Arnos Vale tothe point it is at today.

“I always felt it was Bristol’s bestkept secret and always thought thatwas such a shame. But there is noway you can say that now.

“It is absolutely on the map, it’s abeautiful place and wonderfulh ave n .

“This place needs us to continueto support it and people need to keepspreading the word. Arnos Vale issaved but not safe.”

will encourage visitors to give gen-e ro u s ly.

Made from Bath Oolitic lime-stone, it was sculpted by local artistTanya Josham.

It is entitled Soul II, and was in-spired by the wildlife and woodlandof the estate, as well as the com-

munity and the people laid to restt h e re.

Malachy McReynolds, chair of theTrustees, said: “In the last ten years, this place has undergone a renais-sance. We are now regarded as one ofthe exemplars across the globe ofwhat you can do with a cemeterywhen it has finished its workingl i f e. ”

The new audio attraction is theculmination of a two-year projectwhere volunteers interviewed morethan 20 individuals to provide morethan 16 hours of oral history re-c o rd i n g s.

Their fascinating accounts reveala detailed picture of the changes toArnos Vale and the community ef-forts to rescue the cemetery overtwo decades.

Two specially crafted audio pieceshave been installed in the atriumterrace and Spielman basement, toplay a series of audio clips capturingthe local mood of the time.

WHEN Arnos Vale was built, parish graveyards in the citywere becoming too full.

The Bristol GeneralCemetery Company was setup to provide a stylish yetspacious alternative.

It bought land in the outlyingvillage of Brislington, and putforward plans for a cemeterywith its architecture andlandscaping designed to echoclassical Greece.

For decades, Arnos Valehad a near-monopoly onburials in Bristol.

By the early 20th century, the cemetery was almost full, but the staff and directorsextended its usefulness byseveral decades byintroducing the firstcrematorium in the West ofEngland.

Today, Arnos Vale is run by acharitable trust, and its futuredepends on public donationsand the work of volunteers.

It provides space forweddings, venue hire, andreligious services, and overthe last decade, has alsobecome a tourist spot south ofthe river.

It is the only known fullyrestored example of aVictorian "Arcadian" gardencemetery in the UK.

It is also home to a uniquecollection of Grade II listedbuildings and monumentsconsidered to be of nationalsignificance.

The 45-acre cemetery needs toraise £500,000 before June 2016 tocreate a £1 million endowment tosecure its future forever.

The Heritage Lottery Fund willmatch every pound of the £500,000d o n at e d .

Staff hope the new donation box

The recorder, Mr James Wadding-ton, told him: “By good fortune theglass was a heavy pint glass and itd i d n’t break.

“If it had broken it is highly likelyMr Allen’s injuries would be moreserious than they were.”

The judge gave Fox an indefiniterestraining order banning him fromall contact with Mr Allen.

Julian Howells, prosecuting, saidFox tried to show Mr Allen text mes-sages and was described as being “inhis face” before grabbing the pintg l a s s.

Mr Howells said: “Without warninghe struck Mr Allen around the head anumber of blows.

DINOSAURS could have had feath-ers, according to a pair of Bristolscientists who have been busy ex-amining new fossils discovered inSiberia.

A new discovery of a small di-nosaur called Kulindadromeus inRussia is the first ever example of aplant-eating dinosaur with feathersand scales.

The Kulindadromeus which hadbristles on its head and back, hascontradicted the previous theory

that only meat-eating dinosaurshad feathers. The Kulindadromeusfeathers were studied by Dr MariaMcNamara and Professor MichaelBenton from the University of Bris-tol.

Dr McNamara said: “These feath-ers are really very well preserved. We can see each filament and howthey are joined together at the base, making a compound structure ofsix or seven filaments, each up to15mm long.”

ACHRISTIAN is essen-tially a pilgrim. TheChurch is a pilgrimChurch. The whole of ourlife is one long journey to

God. Summing up his existenceChrist said: “I came from theFather ... and now I am going tothe Father”. Now the risen Lordunites us to Himself and invites usto come with Him to the Father. Our whole life is our response tothat invitation. To make a pil-grimage is to set out on a journeywhich expresses outwardly ourdeeper, spiritual journey throughl i f e.

At the end of the month, youngpeople from the Clifton Diocesewill be making their own jour-ney/pilgrimage to Lourdes inFrance. Lourdes is a pilgrimagesite for Catholics because we be-lieve that Mary, the Mother ofJesus, appeared to a young girlcalled Bernadette many times andinvited her to dig for a spring andto bring others to wash and pray.We believe it is a place of healingand refreshment, so as youngpeople, we go there to simply stop, reflect, pray and serve others.

Our Lady has sent out the in-vitation to us: Come here in pro-cession, in prayer, in penance. Sheinvites us to leave for a while ourhomes, our work, and the careswhich normally absorb our time,to share the pilgrimage experi-e n c e.

In our preparation sessionswith young people we help them todiscover the opportunities theywill have in Lourdes to deepentheir own faith. In 2012 BishopDeclan sat with the young peopleand told them that it is over adrink in a café or an ice creamwhere we meet Christ. Our weekin Lourdes is full of big celebra-tions with hundreds of people, butI think we can lose our focus onGod in those moments. Maybe it isin the conversations and in asimple smile that we really findGod. So my role during our weekis, not only to look after the youngpeople and to ensure that they areenjoying themselves, but also toremind them that checking theirphones and trying to find wi-fi inthe hotel is maybe not the reasonthey have embarked on the jour-ney!

Please say a prayer for theyoung people and those they ac-company travelling to Lourdesthis month for pilgrimage. We’llbe praying for you in Lourdes.

New generationof police cellsare revealed

BY the end of Septemberanyone arrested in Bristol, and who is likely to be incustody for more than sixhours, will not be taken to a

police station, but to one of threenew custody suites.

The centres, at Patchway, Keyn-sham and Bridgwater in Somerset, have been built, with the needs ofboth police officers and staff, as wellas members of the public who attendthem, in mind.

Construction began on all sites inlate 2012/early 2013 but, in aroundeight weeks, they will all be fullyfunctional.

The centre at Patchway will housemore than 250 staff and officers.

The large reception area is fullyopen, in contrast to some older-stylepolice stations where officers still sit

behind glass screens. There is also aroom set aside for solicitors – this isa new initiative which is supposed tomake it easier and quicker forpeople who have been arrested to seetheir lawyer or seek legal aid.

But if openness is key for thosewalking into the building volun-tarily the opposite is true of thosewho will enter via a police van.

Police vans will drive throughsecurity gates into a special vandock, or garage. Before detaineescan get out of the van, gates willsecure the space – meaning thateven if they try to escape they willsimply be confined to the vand o ck .

This theme continues as they areled through corridors with numer-ous doors – all with air locks so thateach door is locked before another isopened.

Inspector Ian Smart, custody man-ager, told the Bristol Post: “T hisreplicates a system used at BristolPrison.

“It is a huge step forward in extra

security. It means there are a num-ber of layers of security to get in andout. If there is an incident we canshut down a certain wing withouthaving to close the whole centre.”

The Patchway centre has 48 cells –which all include a mattress, pillow, blanket and toilet.

They all include running waterand a fish-eye security lens, whichallows officers to see everything inthe room, and CCTV.

Each cell receives natural lightand includes a built-in screen which

can be used by officers to com-municate with the detainee.

On every wall outside the cells isan “affray strip” – which can triggeran alarm should officers push it.

Staff based at the centre, includingneighbourhood and beat teams fromNorth Bristol and Filton, as well asthe South Gloucestershire YouthOffending Team will begin movingin from September 11, while the newenquiry office at Patchway will beopen from 8am – 8pm seven days awe e k .

CLOSURES

The opening of the newcentres co-insides with theclosure of many Bristolpolice stations.

Avon and SomersetConstabulary plans toreduce its portfolio ofbuildings by at least 36 percent by 2019 in a bid tomake savings of millionsfrom budgets over thecoming years. Police chiefshave said the move will allowthe force to keep moreofficers on the front line.

Creme of the crop First of newhouses at Cadbury site go on sale

THE first homes at theformer Somerdale Factoryin Keynsham have gone onsale – more than three yearsafter the historic Cadbury

factory turned out its last CurlyWu rly.

Taylor Wimpey is building 700new homes as part of its £34 milliondevelopment of the site on the edgeof the town.

Houses on the site have now beenput on sale by the developers and thefirst residents are expected to movein by the end of the year.

The historic red-brick factory em-ployed generations of workers fromthe same families but was deemedsurplus to requirements by Kraft –the American owners of Cadbury –just weeks after it took over the com-p a ny.

The first phase of the developmentis now almost complete and will in-clude three, four and five-bedroomproperties with the most expensivefetching more than £500,000.

Four show-homes will be openingin September to give prospective

purchasers a glimpse of the new de-ve l o p m e n t .

Work has also started on the de-molition of one of the factory blocks, which will pave the way for the con-struction of a new Fry Club.

The club, which has long been amajor part of the community, will berebuilt to include new changingrooms, five function rooms, a largesports bar with a skittle alley and amulti-activity room for communityg roups.

A brand new community centre isalso included in the master-plan, in-cluding a small number of retailunits, a medical centre, a riversidecafe and a care home, as well as anew 210-place nursery and aprimary school.

The proposals also include creat-ing a riverside walk with a new cycleand pedestrian bridge over theRiver Avon, while substantial areasof public open space will be createdincluding a wetland area for wild-l i f e.

Meanwhile, some existing factorybuildings will be used to create10,000 square metres of employments p a c e.

Among the first new homes nowavailable to reserve off-plan at thedevelopment are three-bedroomhouses from £275,000, plus four-bed-

room designs called the Avonfield, priced from £385,000.

The top of the range five-bed-roomed house on the new develop-ment is priced from £540,000.

Charlie Joseph, sales and market-ing director for Taylor Wimpey Bris-tol, said: “We are delighted to unveilthe first selection of new homes forsale at Somerdale, which is alreadygenerating a great deal of interestfrom savvy buyers looking for theirideal executive home.

“By acting now, home-hunterscan be among the first to choosetheir favourite plot from this won-derful collection – and make suresomeone else doesn’t beat them toit!

“W h at ’s more, by reservingoff-plan and choosing from our fant-astic range of interior options, theycan ensure their property is com-pleted to their personal specifica-tions before they have even beenhanded the keys.”

THE DEAL

TAYLOR Wimpey signed amulti-million deal with Krafttwo years ago to develop theSomerdale site andsurrounding land.

The plans include therelocation of the Fry Club, anew school, 700 houses andriverside walks and pathsconnecting the site with therest of Keynsham.

Kraft had originally pledgedto keep open the Cadburyfactory only to perform au-turn two weeks after its

£11.5 billion takeover ofCadbury was completed.

Chocolate productionceased at the factory threeyears ago and the work wasmoved to Poland.

The factory produced its lastCurly Wurly in March 2011.Other favourites made atKeynsham included DoubleDeckers and Creme Eggs.

According to the buildingfirm the scheme could createas many as a thousand newjobs in the area.

I would love to win this dream weddingfor me and my partner, we have beentogether since we were 16 have twobeautiful kids and would love to getmarried now but because of money itshard we have been together for 14 yearsnow. It would make our little familycomplete thank you.

Kate Puddy andDean Porter

Vicki and I got engaged earlier this year. All we both want to do is be married. This prize would make that dream cometrue sooner than we both could haveexpected.

Ian Robinson andVictoria Lloyd-Rees

I would love to win this prize becausemy fiancé and I have been trying tosave up for a few years but with a babywho’s just turned one we never seemto be able to. Next year would be aperfect time for us to have a weddingand Cadbury house is one of our topvenues!

Terri Durston andWilliam Hordern

Nick and I have been together foralmost 12 years and have 2 beautifulchildren, Imogen 3 and Leo 2. I hatethat I don’t have the same surnameas them but spending the £20,000 ona wedding seems completely selfishwhen the children deserve the best ofeverything and we are already a family, just not on paper.

Chantelle Burke andNicholas Anstee

Matt and I have been together 7 yearsnow. He makes me laugh I make himcry, and still after all these years I askwhy, I love him so much this is true, please help us see this relationshipthrough.

Lynn Marston andMatthew Berry

I would like to win this because itwould mean a lot to both me and mypartner, but especially him due tohaving a hard upbringing, not beingable to have what other people have, Ijust want to be able to make our day asfantastic as he is.

LucyWarren andDaniel Baxter

I’m marrying the man of my dreams;he’s so amazing and even willing toadopt my daughter since her daddydied when she was just a baby. I wouldlove to make this a special day for bothof us, many thanks.

Shelley Robbins andJeffery Climo

We have been together 13 years andhave 5 children. We want to get marredmore than anything else in this world. We try and save but end up gettingsomething one of the kids need. I woulddo anything to marry Mark, he is theman of my dreams, my soul mate andmy everything, as I am his.

Stacey Fullbrook andMark Barber

We’ve been engaged for 5 years andsince having 2 children being able toafford a wedding has been tricky. Itwould make our family complete, andour little boy would be so happy to seehis parents finally get married. I’d loveto win it for him, to see his little face onour big day, so excited and proud.

Jenna Keller andStuart Choak

Myself and my partner have beentogether for 12 years and lived togetherfor 7 years, we have 5 children and hada lot of bad luck together with financialworries and ill health, so this would justbe the icing on the cake for us as wearen’t able to afford it otherwise, thanks.

Tanja Riddle andAnthony Riddle

Would like to get married to my partner.

Rosemaria Hinton andLiam Courtney

We have two kids and a mortgage andhave never been able to afford it, plus Iam the only daughter and would live formy dad to walk me down the aisle.

Kelly George andJames Barnes

We want to win this wedding so we canmarry the love of our lives – we are soulmates.

Shaun Young andVicky Downes

Met my partner nearly three years ago,he was with another person at thetime, every time he saw me he seemedexcited, then on the 5th August 2011after he had split up with his ex wefinally got together, he’s 14.5 yearsyounger than me, he’s my soul mateand I love him to bits. We deserve this.

Lisa Betts andAndrew Chanelle

I would love to win my wedding sothat I could give my beautiful princessCharlotte the day she truly deserves; wecannot afford to pay for the weddingwe want because I am currentlysupporting Charlotte while she pursuesher dream of being a star so this wouldbe amazing! Although we’re young loveis forever.

Charlotte Fry andMolly-Ann Rogers

I have my Soulmate, Best-friend, Rockand lover all in one person. He is myone and only and we love each otherdearly.

Amelia Hasell andEdward Mullins

We are currently trying to plan ourwedding but finding the cost reallyexpensive!!! We have been togethersince January 2007. We have twochildren together and I’m dying to havetheir last name! He’s my childhoodsweetheart. Want to make it official.

Jade Salter andRobert Plant

We had planned to get married inMarch 2015. Sadly, Melanie’s mumdied suddenly earlier this year and therewas no life insurance in place. All ourwedding funds went on the funeral. Tobe able to give Melanie a great weddinglike this would mean everything to me,Melanie and her family after all theyhave been through. Thank you!

Julian Grose andMelanie O’Leary

After years of bad times, I didn’t knowhim until he rescued me when my carbroke down. I love him with all myheart and soul. Funds are short as I’ma student nurse and I have fertilityproblems. There isn’t much I can say butMatt is my life, please help us have ourspecial day.

Alysia Gamblin andMatthew Brimson

Aly and Russ successfully blended theirhearts and families while sharing anoutstanding journey of self-discoveryand physical change, becoming activeparents and successfully losing a totalof ‘14 stone’. This September they willrun the Bristol Half ‘side-by-side’ andwish to celebrate their newfound healthby walking ‘hand-in-hand’ and bindingtrue love through marriage.

Alyson Cave andRussell Thomas

We have been together for 14 years andhave 4 young children. We would lovethis chance as 2013 was a bad year forus suddenly losing my father in law tocancer. We were due to get marriedin 2014 but didn’t feel it was rightunder the circumstances. We feel nowis the right time and would love thisopportunity.

Emma Sanderson andAntony Morrison

We want to start the rest of our futuretogether being married and withoutthousands of pounds of debt becauseof the cost of a wedding. Marriage isone of the hardest and most rewardingthings you can do and we are up for thejourney of what the future holds for us

Louisa Price andSimon Fry

Whilst looking at wedding packagesit is becoming very frustrating as noteverything we want is offered together. This package has everything. We want itto be perfect as we have been together14 years and this looks ideal. It will alsolet us spend more money on weddingclothes (especially my dress!).

Most city Muslims reject terrorgroup as nothing to do with Islam

MOST Muslims in Bristolreject Isis as nothing todo with the Islamic faith,a city councillor hascl a i m e d .

And Afzal Shah, a city ward coun-cillor for Easton, said manyMuslims felt vulnerable becausethey were increasingly under thespotlight due to radicalisation andthe controversies over banning theBurkha and Halal meat.

Councillor Shah, who is a prac-tising Muslim, said: “This is one ofthe best countries in the world topractice one’s faith but many peoplein the Muslim community are moreand more worried about the situ-at i o n .

“The feeling among Muslims isthat they are under the spotlightbecause of issues such as Isis.

“But Isis has nothing whatsoeverto do with the Islamic faith.”

He added “I have four of thebiggest mosques in Bristol in myward and I can tell you that Muslimsreject Isis.

“We are warned about suchgroups by the prophet because hesays there will come a time whenthey slaughter innocent individualsand totally misrepresent Islam.”

Mr Shah has organised a meetingwith the police and various agenciesto discuss the issue of groomingyoung people to support radicalv i ew s.

He said: “Muslims are waking upto the fact that young people need anoutlet.

“I feel 100 per cent British andtherefore I regard this as my countryand I think it is very important thatwe deal with this issue collectively.

“If anyone has issues with foreign

policies, then they should involvethemselves in the political processand consider trying to become ac o u n c i l l o r. ”

Isis has been in the headlines isrecent months after taking respons-ibility for the murder of two Westernhosta g es.

Videos of the gruesome behead-ings of the two victims have beenposted online by the extremist grouptriggering outrage across thewo rl d .

Meanwhile, Tony Blair hasclaimed that the only way to dealwith the organisation could be withtroops on the ground.

The former Prime Minister saidair strikes are not enough to defeatthe extremists who have taken con-trol of large swathes of Iraq andSyria.

He said: “What I say is maybe hav-ing been through all of this, havingfaced these decisions in governmentand having faced the difficultchoices in Iraq after 2003, and whenthe very type of terrorism that we'refacing today we faced then, maybeit's worth appreciating the fact thatthere are lessons I have learnt fromthe experience of having gonethrough the process of taking thesedecisions, of having to deal with thesituation in Iraq where, as I say, pre-cisely the same type of terroristforces we were facing in Iraq in2006-07 is exactly what we face nowin 2014.”

Hundreds ofjobs saved asstores sold

B US I N ESS

MOBILE phone operators blamed forthe collapse of retailer Phones 4Uhave swooped in to buy some of thestores, saving hundreds of jobs.

Phones 4U went into administra-tion last week, closing 450 stores withseveral local outlets including inBroadmead, Bedminster, Yate andKingswood. More than 5,000 staffwere made redundant nationwide.

The company was making strongprofits but collapsed after Vodafoneand then EE became the final mobileoperators to cut ties with the store, making its business model unsus-t a i n abl e.

Now EE, which employs hundredsof people in Bristol at its Aztec WestHQ, has agreed to buy 58 of the stores, safeguarding 359 jobs.

The stores will be re-branded as EEand staff will transfer to their newemployer straight away.

Vodafone announced a similar dealto take 130 stores on Friday.

And Dixons Carphone has agreedto hire the 800 staff who had beenemployed in Phones 4U concessionsin its Currys and PC World stores.

The moves by EE and Vodafone isseen as part of a trend by mobileoperators to cut out the middle manand deal with customers direct.

Neither firm, nor administratorsPWC, have revealed which storeshave been sold at this stage.

A spokesman for EE said: “We canconfirm that we have agreed with thePhones 4u administrator to purchase58 stores, safeguarding 359 jobs, sub-ject to court approval.”

WHAT IS ISIS?

ISIS stands for IslamicState of Iraq and Syria but isnow more commonly knownas Islamic State. It is a Sunnijihadist group which hasproclaimed its own state, called a caliphate, in Syriaand Iraq.

The group has beendenounced by manycountries including Britainand the US as a terroristorganisation and has beenaccused by the UN andAmnesty International ofgrave human rights’ abuses.

The group emerged fromal-Qaeda in Iraq but inFebruary, these links weresevered reportedly due toIsis’s brutality and“notorious intractability”.

When the caliphate wasproclaimed in June, itspurred thousands ofjihadists from all over theworld to travel to the MiddleEast to take up the cause ofbringing allMuslim-inhabited regionsunder its political control. Anestimated 600 are believedto have travelled fromBritain.

ARECENT outing to the cinema hasleft me feeling all confused andunsure and not in a good way. Oneof the most disconcerting thingsabout getting older is the fact that

you no longer know what your opinions areon any given day of the week.

As a young man growing up in the 1980sthe world was a much simpler place andyou pretty much knew where you stood onevery issue from the Thatcher governmentto nuclear power.

Of course there will always be someiron-clad certainties in life – E a s t E n d e rs ismiserable rubbish, Greggs really do makethe best egg custard tarts, Queen willalways be a terrible band and golf shouldnever be treated as a proper sport.

But I have found that as the years haveadvanced I have started to see the oppositepoint of view on lots of issues and find itharder to decide exactly where I stand onthe really big issues of the day. In fact I canchange my mind from minute to minute onany given topic.

Should we really be getting involved inthe Middle East again? Is Scottish inde-pendence a good idea? Is two-party politicsa thing of the past? And is Simon CowellSatan in human form?

I don’t have any answers to most of thequestions but I must admit to a sneakyfeeling when it comes to Mr Cowell.

But back to our trip to the cinema – I havealways been a big fan of films but in recenttimes I have started to view the idea of anouting to our local multiplex as somethingto endure rather than enjoy.

Have you seen the cost of the sweets andthe drinks in these places?

And then when you negotiate the queuesfor the tickets and the dash to the toiletsthen you have to sit through at least half anhour of adverts before you even get to thetrailers for the up-coming features.

In the past I used to love the sneakpreviews of the films but even that simplepleasure has been taken away from me.The fact is most trailers now seem de-signed to tell you everything about the filmthey are trying to advertise. I have seensome trailers which give the entire plotaway from start to finish. It has got to thestage where my other half has taken tositting there with her eyes closed andhands over her ears during the trailers.

But the main reason for my consterna-tion following my recent visit was thethorny subject of the battle of the sexes.

We had gone to see the excellent thrillerGone Girl which takes the topic of a mar-riage gone wrong to extreme levels. ForgetFatal Attraction, this film takes maritaltroubles to a whole new level.

But what has left me completely non-plussed is all the columns and comment-ators discussing the meaning behind themovie. According to some Ben Affleckshould be ashamed of himself, not becauseof Pearl Harbor, but because he is awoman-hating misogynist.

Me, I am not so sure. I think it was just agood thriller with a great twist, but thenwhat the hell do I know?

Shameful Gone Girl? Nope.Pearl Harbor though...

Mike RibbeckMotocross rider’s bikes stolenjust days before beach races

AKEEN Motocross rider had his bikesstolen just a week before he was duetake part in the annual Weston BeachRace. Dan Gissing was looking for-ward to getting involved for the first

time this weekend. But in the early hours of lastSunday thieves broke into his dad Jason’s gar-age in Shirehampton, broke the locks securinghis two-wheelers and took them.

His mum Tina and step-dad Nick Davis hadpaid for his race entry as a Christmas present.

“It destroys you, because you work so hard toearn the money to buy the bikes, thensomething like this happens,” said the22-year-old, who works in freight forwarding inAvo n m o u t h .

“We had been looking forward to the beachrace all year, so we’re devastated.

“Motocross is a family sport for us. My dadused to race when he was younger and he doesmy mechanics when we go to races.

“We think they used bolt cutters and some ofour tools in the garage to break the locks on thebikes. I think whoever stole them must haveknown they were in there.

“I’ve had texts from friends who have given

me three or four names of people who mighthave been involved and someone saw a bikethat looked like one of mine being ridden in theLong Cross and Blaise area.”

Dan, of Henbury, is a member of Corshamand South Somerset Motocross clubs.

The first missing bike is a new KTM SX 250,2015 model, which is mainly orange with somewhite design. It cost Dan £6,000 and had noteven been ridden.

The other bike is a 2005 Yamaha YZ125,

which is blue with a white number plate andhas been fitted with sand tyres, with big treads.Dan fears that neither are covered by insur-a n c e.

Avon and Somerset police are investigatingthe crime, which is thought to have happenedon Portview Walk at about 3.30am-4am.

Anyone with information, or who has seenthe bikes being used or for sale, should callpolice on 101, quoting reference 105933/14.

t e rd ay by Save the Children volunteers on alibrary bus celebrating all that is magicalabout reading, including storytelling andother fun activities.

PREVIOUS THEFTS

LAST month, there were twothefts of Motocross and off-roadbikes in the Bristol area:

 September 1 – 15 bikes andequipment stolen from GBM o t o rc ro s s store, Sheene Court,Bedminster

September 3 – Two road-legalHusqvarnas and two KTMoff-road motorbikes were takenfrom Hayward Road industrialestate, Staple Hill.

MY mum has moved. Instead ofliving two streets away fromme, she is now on the other sideof the city. So now, to get a freeSunday roast and to be told off

about my ‘messy’ hair, I have to make a 20minute bus journey.

Therefore, I have spent more time on abus in the last few months than I have sinceI was at school.

It’s given me time to work on a list of myown rules for how people should behave onthe bus.

Here is my guide to bus etiquette: While you are waiting for the bus spendat least some of this time finding the rightchange for your fare or locating your dayrider/card. Please don’t flag down a busand then, after you ask for a ticket, looktotally stunned by the driver asking formoney. I am amazed by the number ofpeople (often women, sorry but it is) whoreact to the request for money as if theyhave never paid for anything in their life. They then start searching through 17 dif-ferent pockets before eventually pullingout a £20 Scottish note. When you get on the bus, don’t dither inthe aisle, just sit down. No, not there!T hat’s where the woman with the push-chair behind you is going to put thebugg y. If you are lucky enough to get a doubleseat to yourself – never sit on the outsidechair to prevent someone else sitting nextto you. You are definitely not that special. I love Kylie. I really like One Direction. Thanks to Glastonbury, I have even got intoDolly Parton.

However, I don’t expect other people toshare my (excellent) taste in music. Whichis why I DON’T PLAY IT OUT LOUD ONMY PHONE’S SPEAKER. Please take note, youth of today. Speaking of mobiles. Please don’t phonesomeone and have a conversation whichstarts: “I’m on the bus. By Temple Meads,Number 50.Yeah, Temple Meads”. If youare going to call someone, at least make itinteresting for the rest of us.Never get involved in making funny facesat a toddler on the seat in front of you. Theynever get tired of it. And finally…when you get off the busyou must say “cheers drive”.
