DESCRIPTION

Debrecen is such a multifaceted city that no single adjective is good enough to define its character. Unique in its own right, it is also one half of the twosome comprised of Hungary’s second largest city and UNESCO World Heritage Award holder, Hortobágy. Debrecen is full of flavors like its namesake double sausage. It is vibrant like its trademark Flower Parade (celebrating its 50th anniversary this year) or Hortobágy Equestrian Days, which marks its own jubilee. It is soothing like the hot water gushing from the thermal springs smack in the middle of Sauna World or Wellness Island. It is youthful and trendy like the bustling downtown bars or the popular Campus Festival. It is spacious and relaxed like its hotels, which invariably meet all possible needs and requirements. It is diverse like its sights, a real treasure trove of gems ranging from historic buildings to interactive museum exhibits.

MUST-SEE IN DEBRECEN

Page 5: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

DEBRECENDebrecen has served as Hungary’s capital twice, both times representing dramatic turning points in the nation’s history. Pay a respectful visit to the

original stages of those dramas and relive those past events in the Reformed College or Reformed Big Church.

More tips on your downtown stroll on pages 8 to 19.

More entertainment options inBig Forest on pages 20 to 25.

More spa pleasures on pages 26 to 31.

More must-see events on pages 52 to 59.

More mouthwatering offers on pages 36 to 41.

Debrecen is a livable city where the serenity of nature is always just a quick walk or ride away. Check out the city’s green heart, Big Forest, which has completely been relandscaped in the last few years. Be sure you do not miss its fantastic facilities such as the thermal and adventure baths, swimming pool, zoo, amusement park, scientific adventure center, multifunctional sports arena, repurposed water tower, amphitheater, playgrounds, light shows, fountains, jogging and walking trails, not to mention some of Debrecen’s greatest hotels and restaurants.

Debrecen’s very own bath, Aquaticum Spa, is absolutely unique because of the complex mineral composition of the 65 ˚C water gushing from its spring, the health services and spa options utilizing this priceless natural resource and the scenic location the spa complex occupies. Access from one unit to another is unhindered, so every member of your family will find their perfect choice of watery adventures.

There’s no way you will be allowed to leave Debrecen and Hortobágy without tasting some Debrecen double sausage, stuffed cabbage à la Hajdúság, gray-cattle goulash, or the hearty dishes of Hortobágy herdsmen. Don’t despair! You will have plenty of opportunities at our fine-dining restaurants, or the various culinary festivals all year round.

The most awesome cultural event in Debrecen – and one of the most popular in the nation – is definitely the renowned Flower Parade taking place annually on August 20, the day commemorating the foundation of the Hungarian state. The city bursts into blossom and floats carrying gigantic flower compositions roll along the city’s avenues accompanied by Hungarian and overseas troupes of dancers and musicians. A fitting finale to the day’s events is the night gala show and the spectacular firework display cheered by tens of thousands.

MUST-SEEIN HORTOBÁGY

Page 7: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

HORTOBÁGYThe word Hortobágy stands for several things: a village, a region as well as a meandering small river. The common links that span all three are the iconic

“Nine-Hole” Bridge and the traditional “puszta” watering hole, the Hortobágy Big Inn in the immediate vicinity of the bridge. The real reason for this being

a must-see program? The awe-inspiring sight of the endless prairie and spectacular mirage, the breath-taking equestrian tricks of local cowboys, their

festive traditions as well as the unique natural beauties of the landscape.

Amateur naturalists as well as seasoned ornithologists will find a diverse range of habitats in Hortobágy populated or visited by tens of thousands of birds belonging to 350 species. The most attractive natural phenomenon against the backdrop of fall sunsets is the incredible party thrown by huge flocks of migratory cranes.

You don’t need to travel all the way to Africa to enjoy a genuine safari. Why don’t you take a ride on a four-wheel drive in Hortobágy Wildlife Park and explore wild places inhabited by indigenous prehuman species? Be sure, though, that you watch out for aurochs and wild horses instead of lions.

Odds are you can neither imagine nor properly describe what the limitless grassland looks like, how its herdsmen orient themselves, or how the prairie’s indigenous animal species like the “racka” sheep or gray cattle manage to survive, be it a sweltering hot spell or freezing cold. But you can surely take the

feel of the land during a ninety-minute wagon ride; you can explore those beasts in their own unspoilt habitat and wonder at those daredevil buckaroos in action. What better opportunity to do the latter than Hortobágy Equestrian Days, which marks its 50th anniversary in 2016?

More puszta adventures on pages 42 to 47.

Reformed Big ChurchDebrecen’s symbol is one of the nation’s largest Reformed churches, a building of major historic significance. It was here that Lajos Kossuth read out the Declaration of Independence on April 14, 1849. The wing chair used by the Regent-President on that glorious occasion is one of the church’s most precious relics. The main structure has been rebuilt several times. Today’s familiar Classicist form was developed after the great fire of 1802. You can enjoy magnificent views of the city from the top of the towers, or the steel bridge behind the tympanum. If you are courageous enough to attempt the steep climb up, your added bonus will be a spectacular close-up of the 4.6-ton Rákóczi Bell. In addition to regular services, exhibits of religious history, organ concerts and other musical events are also on the schedule. The church has held the status of national monument since 2013.

Kossuth SquareDebrecen’s Main Square features the iconic group of statues erected to commemorate Lajos Kossuth, the huge mosaic depicting the city’s coat of arms, made by placing together 180,000 pieces of Venetian glass, the Millennial Fountain as well as the Art Nouveau building of Hotel Aranybika. The extended walking zone that includes the square is the venue of countless cultural events from spring till autumn including several food festivals and the Debrecen Flower Parade. This is also where the city’s Christmas tree is placed at the beginning of the festive season.

THE HISTORIC CITY CENTER

The streets and varied architectural styles of the “civic city” create a pleasant atmosphere. The historic city center includes the area that spreads out from

Nagyállomás (Main Railway Terminal) to the magnificent Reformed Big Church, located on Main Square, and also includes the museum quarter.

One of the most important motifs in the coat of arms, the phoenix symbolizes a city continually being born again. You will come across the image in various places such as the mosaic, the ornamentation of the Millennial Fountain and the streetcars.

Page 10: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

Old City HallBuilt in Classicist style, one of Debrecen’s most prominent architectural relics is the City Hall building. The city as well as the Hall played an important role in the events of the 1948/49 Revolution and War of Independence. It provided temporary headquarters for the nation’s Defense Committee. Its “chamber of the secret archives” was actually the hiding place of the Holy Crown of Hungary. Today, the edifice houses the City Assembly and the Mayor’s Office.

Reformed Lesser ChurchThe original house of worship was redesigned several times after it had burned down. The final structure was finished in 1876. Its onion-dome spire was destroyed by a windstorm in 1907. The builders later decided to replace it with castellated parapet. It has been dubbed by locals as Csonka (truncated) Church ever since.

Piac StreetDebrecen’s Main Street was the proud venue of the famous town fairs for 300 years starting in the 16th century. Today’s cityscape, however, is defined by the former merchant houses erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The pink office building of Debrecen’s First Savings Bank (on the corner of Kossuth Street) and the twin tenement blocks with the copper spires (on the corner of Simonffy Street) spectacularly stand out against the background of slightly gaudy downtown houses. Number 54 is occupied by Debrecen’s most beautiful Art Nouveau building now functioning as County Hall.

Debrecen, Piac u. 20.

Debrecen, Révész tér 2.

Debrecen’s Main Street was suitable for traffic for two centuries thanks to a 650-meter-long and 6 to 7-meter wide elevated wooden walkway erected in the 1600s. A small section of the ancient “mud bridge,” now on display outside Hotel Aranybika, is a peerless archeological relic.

Page 11: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

County HallIt is the most beautiful Art Nouveau building in the city. Originally, the site was occupied by the city’s first inn, the White Horse.

St. Anne’s CathedralBuilt in Baroque and Louis Seize style, the church was elevated to cathedral rank by Pope John Paul II in 1993. A certified replica of the Turin Shroud has been on display in the building since 2011.

DOWNTOWN STREETS & SQUARESBranching off from Piac Street on both sides, the smaller alleys and piazzas

double as secret hidey-holes of historic buildings. No wonder that all of them bear the names of local notables or trades.

Batthyány Street, branching off from Szent Anna Street, is the place where you can find the gate of many keys. Bring along your key and reinforce the power of your relationship with your love interest.

Ady ParkYour Debrecen strolls will be even more refreshing in the leafy shade of trees and fountains dotting the city’s small squares and piazzas. The newest, opened in 2015, is a vibrant, youthful and enchanting spot.

Csokonai National TheaterOne of the finest repertory theaters of the country opened its gates in 1865, so 2015 witnessed the celebrations of its 150th anniversary. The façade of the Romantic-style building is decorated with statues of the muses of tragedy and dance as well as those of Hungarian literary greats.

Apolló CinemaDebrecen’s most versatile movie theater, Apolló Cinema, offers the very best in picture and sound quality, no matter if your choice is the latest blockbuster or an art film. More than 100 years old, the theater is also home to fan meetings, concerts, and other events of cultural interest.

Hal KözLocated at the place of the old fish (“hal”) and dairy market, this is one of Debrecen’s most pleasant downtown piazzas. Its cafés, terraces, spectacular fountain displays, rugged tenement blocks, and private gallery make it a popular tourist rendezvous point.

Just a few steps away is #6 Szécheny Street, which is Debrecen’s oldest building. The most prestigious VIP guest of the one-time mail-coach depot and inn, erected in 1690, was Charles XII of Sweden.

SynagoguesDebrecen Jewish Congregation is Hungary’s largest Israelite community outside the capital. The older of Debrecen’s two surviving synagogues, the Orthodox synagogue was built in Pásti Street in 1894. Not only a holy shrine, the synagogue is also a tourist destination as well as a venue of exhibitions, conferences, and concerts. Its yard houses the Holocaust Memorial to commemorate the Debrecen victims of the genocide. The compound also includes a prayer room from 1910. Its old basement mikvah has been repurposed as a kosher wine tavern and exhibit space. The unit which had functioned as a kosher butcher shop up to the late 1980s serves as a display room and resting chamber. Erected in 1909 in Kápolnási Street, the synagogue “status quo ante” shares a plot with the former Jewish High School (now Youth Center). The congregation’s headquarters includes a guesthouse which is often frequented by pilgrims traveling on the holy journey from Debrecen to Nagykálló.

Small World InteractiveEducational & Art GallerySmall World is the nation’s first interactive and art gallery which offers 420 sq m worth of fun with its seasonal exhibitions and other educational programs.

Csapó StreetOne of Debrecen’s oldest streets is named after fullers and other practitioners of the wool trade who inhabited these quarters in the 15th century. The section closest to downtown is a popular shopping street and pedestrian zone. The neighborhood includes the Big Market, Flower Market, the Fórum Shopping Mall, the City Music School as well as several watering holes including Debrecen’s first “ruin pub”, the Roncs Bar. Another attractive feature is the spectacular fountain display.

Déri Museum The Déri Museum is one of Hungary’s foremost establishments of its kind. In addition to its exhibits of local cultural interest, it has become renowned for the huge collection of items, brought together by Frigyes Déri, which represents various aspects of universal human civilization. One of the museum’s main attractions is the awe-inspiring “Ecce Homo” painted by Mihály Munkácsy. The painting’s special status is proven by the fact that the builders reserved a separate exhibition room so that it could be displayed in a worthy environment. The museum awaits visitors with new permanent and diverse temporary exhibits. The group of four statues by Ferenc Medgyessy, erected outside the main building, was awarded the Grand Prize at the 1937 Paris Exposition.

THE MUSEUM QUARTER

“Lícium tree,” a bushy shrub which stands on the corner of Museum and Füvészkert Streets is, in fact, neither grass nor real tree. The ancient anecdote it is usually associated with evokes 400-year-old theological debates, therefore it is a potent symbol of Debrecen Calvinism.

Page 17: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

MODEM is Hungary’ second largest contemporary art gallery, at the same time one of Central Europe’s most modern ones, that proudly gives home to one of Hungary’s s most significant private fine-art collections. Enjoy top-notch fine-art exhibitions, innovative performances of related arts as well as hilarious museum-pedagogy sessions for all ages.

Debrecen House of Literature & Medgyessy Ferenc Memorial MuseumOn display at Debrecen House of Literature, the new permanent exhibit titled “Dreaming Hungarians – Stories from Debrecen’s Literary History” gives a comprehensive picture of the careers of the city’s most influential men of letters displaying old manuscripts, relics and virtual games. At Medgyessy Ferenc Memorial Museum, another permanent exhibit presents a new selection of the sculptor’s most important works.

One of Hungary’s biggest and most modern conference centers was named after Ferenc Kölcsey, author of our National Anthem, and alumnus of Debrecen Reformed College. Having functioned continuously as an educational institution since its establishment in 1538, the college is the cradle of Hungarian civilization. Designated as a national monument in 2013, it also features a museum that has permanent exhibits displaying the school’s history, student life, and the religious art of the Reformed Church in the Trans-Tisza Region. Your visit here will help you understand why Debrecen became the

most important bastion of the Reformed faith in Hungary. Bedecked with majestic murals, the building’s stairwell leads to the entrance of the gigantic library storing more than 600,000 volumes, the Csokonai Room and the Oratory that housed Hungary’s National Assembly in 1849.

The “gerundium” is the heaviest object on display in the school-history exhibit. Named after the complicated Latin conjugation system, the sturdy staffs were used by students serving as volunteer firefighters. Today each university faculty proudly carries its very own specially ornamented ceremonial gerundium.

The Memorial Garden occupies the leafy plot between the Big Church and the College. Here stands the statue of István Bocskai, Prince of Transylvania, who settled his “Hajdú” warriors in the vicinity of Debrecen. Another memorial commemorates 40 Protestant preachers sentenced to hard labor during the anti-Reformist revolts. As a high point of his Debrecen visit in August 1991, Pope John Paul II laid a wreath on the base of the pillar to symbolize peace and reconciliation among Christian denominations.

A CITY WITH AN

ADVENTUREPARK

Big Forest has long been inhabited by the Muses of poetry and served as a rich hunting ground for academics in pursuit of exciting research topics. The statues of most of these men of letters are on display in the “literary sculpture park” on Medgyessy Promenade.

Page 21: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

NAGYERDEI PARKAll great cities can be identified by famous parks. In the case of Debrecen,

this is called Nagyerdei Park Forest, the nation’s first conservation area.Only a ten-minute ride from downtown, the park offers total peace and quiet in the

shade of hundred-year-old trees as well as countless entertainment options.

Nagyerdei Park & Frog PondCovering an area of a football pitch and featuring a spectacular fountain, the Frog Pond is the very center and most treasured attraction of this public park. Why don’t you kick back and enjoy the sunshine on loungers along the shore? Or explore the meandering footpaths where Land Art statues of animals, which make use of the forms and “props” of their natural environment, provide unique visual input. Be sure you also let the little ones discover the giant “guided” frog, the “carp” ropeway and the fun house in the playground.

Mist TheaterIn the immediate vicinity of Nagyerdei Arena, a one-of-a-kind attraction beckons from spring through fall. The multimedia fountain, or “Mist Theatre,” boasts a 30×10-m, fan-shaped curtain of water vapor which can be used as a functional movie screen to show clips of Debrecen as well as special laser installations. The more adventurous might want to try the stepping stones across the basin on sweltering summer days.

Nagyerdei AmphitheaterThe dense green foliage in Big Forest will provide an attractive background of theatrical performances, contemporary music concerts, opera shows, and outdoor movie screenings from spring through fall.

The arena is located in its namesake park. Boasting state-of-the-art architectural features, it nicely snuggles up to the surrounding greenery. With a seating capacity of 20,000, the multifunctional complex serves as a sumptuous venue of sporting events, training sessions as well as programs of cultural interest, business meetings, conferences, banquettes, and even balls. The most spectacular ancillary element of the

compound is the “suspension sidewalk.” Complete with a running track, the 1,100-m-long structure skirts the entire stadium building at an average height of 7 meters. This will make joggers feel that they do laps in the leafy canopy of the park. The stadium’s facilities, the serenity of the park and its impressive system of fountains will provide the ideal venue for some first-rate relaxation.

Nagyerdei Entertainment Complex(zoo, plant collection & theme park)This complex covers an area of 17 hectares under the canopy of Big Forest’s grand old trees. On display are some 700 specimens of 160 species native to various habitats of five continents that can be explored even on a nice walk with penguins. Watch how these critters feed, or join the many exciting programs. The nation’s only all-year-round theme park welcomes fun-seekers from March through November.

Botanical Garden at UDUD’s Botanical Garden behind the main campus building was established in 1928 when the original garden that had belonged to the Reformed College ceased to exist. Today it keeps nearly 6,000 plant species on display. Its collection of cacti and succulent plants – with a list of 1,300 cactus and 1,000 other succulent species, one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe – is renowned world-wide.

Main Building of the University of DebrecenOne of the nation’s five research universities, UD celebrated its centenary in 2012. The glass-ceilinged cour d’honneur of the main edifice, built in Eclectic and Neo-Baroque style, is skirted by an arcaded corridor system, whose walls are inscribed with the names of the school’s most renowned professors and former students. The fountain in the spacious French-style park in front of the building plays a special role in student tradition: Graduates are supposed to take a plunge in its pool after their finals.

HEALING,

RELAXATION& RECREATION

Supplemented by the state-of-the-art facilities of UD’s Health Center, Debrecen’s spa complex offers a uniquely comprehensive range of medical services for those who come to the city for treatment or simply rejuvenation.

Page 27: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

THERMAL WATERS OF DEBRECENLocated in an area of scenic beauty in Big Forest, the spa complex offers an entire unit of medical facilities and a wide range of specialist consultations to guests who seek regeneration, healing, or relaxation. Your comfort and enjoyment will be guaranteed by the attractions of the thermal bath, the indoor aqua park, the wellness center (directly accessible from the hotel unit) as well as the “sauna world.” All this in an area of natural beauty set aside for public recreational use.

The quality of thermal water is the better the higher its temperature and the richer its mineral composition. The temperature of the thermal water feeding the Debrecen bath is 65 0C. Its mineral composition includes alkali chloride, hydrocarbonate, iodide, bromide, sodium chloride with a significant content of calcium, magnesium, meta-boraic acid, and meta-silisic acid. A single glimpse reveals the medicinal properties of Debrecen’s thermal water. The brownish color is the result of its high iodine content.

Balneotherapy is a highly recommended preventive measure for people living a sedentary

lifestyle, but it is an effective treatment for anxiety and depression, too.

Clinical trials have proved its benefits for patients suffering from locomotor diseases, rheumatic pains as well as dermatological and gynecological conditions. It is especially useful when applied as a rehabilitative remedy to treat injuries.

Two isolated relaxation rooms and an outdoor sanctuary with loungers, ambient lighting and relaxing music will help you enjoy some time-out before and after your sweat sessions. The complex is worth a visit even if you are only after a relaxing sauna session. A little extra on the price of your daily or seasonal pass will buy you this chance complete with the use of a soft sauna towel to make your experience perfect.

Bánk Recreation CenterThe center’s exhibit house and arboretum give fascinating insights into the flora of the surrounding area as well as the entire Central Europe, and the life of the “vákáncsos,” impoverished peasants who lived rough in the woods. You can also take a pleasant stroll along the trail called Trees of the Year, or in the adjoining exhibit farm. More recreation and entertainment options are available at the “fun village,” historical exhibition and the rustic open-air activity house.

Literally named “the devil’s trench,” Ördögárok is one of the last remnants of an ancient entrenchment system. An exhibition point is located by Zsuzsi Railway line, near Csereerdő stop. Legend has it that King Csörsz was allowed to marry his beloved princess on one condition only: He had to arrive at the betrothal ceremony by ship. Proving that love knows no limits, Csörsz had a canal constructed to link the Danube and Tisza Rivers.

Page 37: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

TOP SPECIALTIESYOU ARE NOT TO MISSNo region, other than Debrecen and Hortobágy, could successfully bid for the

title of the most authentic representative of Hungarian cuisine. Good and hearty fare is always unmistakably unique here, no matter if it is served from sooty

stew pots, the more exquisite crockery of fine-dining restaurants, or picked up in a street food bar or at the stalls of various culinary events.

You will never forget the peculiar spicycharacter of traditional Hungarian dishes.

Double Sausage à la DebrecenDebrecen is one of those very rare cities whose names are associated with a unique flavor. The famous “Debrecen double sausage” is so tasty that it makes perfect sense to serve two in a single portion. Although “Debreziner” features on the menus of many eateries around the world, the real deal (neither soft nor hard, not dry, not fatty, but pleasantly juicy and crunchy) can only be found in Debrecen.

Pancakes Filledwith Meat Ragout à la HortobágyThe name of this delicacy may sound fitting, but it is not native to Hortobágy. The modern version of the recipe was, strangely enough, inspired by the 1958 Brussels Expo: A touch of romanticized “puszta” feeling stuffed into savory pancakes and served with a rich sauce liberally seasoned with paprika.

Ask Tourinform’s office about restaurants offering “Debrecen double sausage”.

37

Page 38: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

SlambucAlso dubbed “öhön,” this simple traditional dish is basically a mixture of pork fat, a rustic version of pasta (lebbencs) and diced potatoes cooked together in a stew pot. Legend has it that the affectionate name was first coined by a young cowboy. When at lunchtime his boss asked,“’Tis a nice meal, ain’t it, lad?” the taciturn boy answered, “Öhön!” (a slightly slurred version of “igen” uttered with a full mouth).

Stuffed Cabbage à la DebrecenEvery region has its own variety of this delicious “stuff.” The Debrecen version is based on pickled cabbage leaves. The elegantly formed rolls are served on a bed of shredded leaves and topped with a “crown” of Debrecen double sausages.

Goulash of Gray-Cattle BeefThis traditional “puszta” dish was named after cow-herds (gulyás in Hungarian). The original recipe calls for the rich meat of Hortobágy-bred cattle cooked on wood fire in a traditional sooty stew pot.

Gingerbread Plate à la DebrecenIn Debrecen, even your plates are edible, but only if they are fashioned from spicy cake mixture sweetened with honey. The many forms of the original variety were molded on customized carved wooden spatulas. The colorful hard cakes are delicious, but can also serve as imaginative gifts.

HORTOBÁGY, THE

GENUINEPUSZTA

Hortobágy herdsmen are called different names depending of what kind of animals they tend.A “csikós” looks after horses, a “gulyás” cattle. A “juhász” herds flocks of sheep, while a “kondás” cares for pigs. Practitioners of each trade wear hats of different shape, but they are always sturdy affairs: they won’t lose their form even if someone should tread on them.

Page 43: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

HORTOBÁGYA designated UNESCO World Heritage site, Hortobágy National Park is the perfect archetype of pristine natural landscape. This is the place where everyone longs to find refuge from the monotony of modern human existence. Book a wagon ride,

or go on a puszta safari to take the feel of the prairie and enjoy the freedom of the limitless horizon, the mirage, grazing herds, and monotonously nodding sweep-pole wells. In the nation’s oldest and biggest national park, also a European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) site, herdsmen’s traditions are still part of people’s means of

subsistence and not mere promotional gimmicks.

“Nine-Hole” BridgeA truly iconic landmark in Hortobágy, the grandest and longest of similar Hungarian stone constructions was built in 1833 according to the plans of Ferenc Povolny. The nearby area is the venue of the renowned annual fair and open-air market of handicraft traditionally held on August 20.

Legend has it that the “Nine-Hole” Bridge came into being when the nine lovers of an infamous outlaw (with the local gendarmes closing in on him) held hands and helped their beau cross the river on their shoulders and arms. After his lucky escape, the hapless damsels turned into stone.

Hortobágy Big InnHortobágy Big Inn is the oldest and grandest of these traditional watering holes where you can sample “puszta cuisine” in its original locale. The exhibit room presents images and artifacts to illustrate the long-past “csárda” milieu populated by tough denizens of the prairie. You can even get your pictures taken rigged out in traditional garb. The thematic itinerary dubbed “The Trail of Inns” includes stops to display exhibits at the Kadarcs and Meggyes Inn Museums.

Hortobágy National ParkVisitor Center & Craftsmen’s YardYou can get detailed information on the programs available in the various tourist spots of the region including how to see National Park areas which are open to visitors. You can also check out a multi-media show presenting the uniquely rich wildlife of the puszta including the exhibit called “The World of Cranes.” If you’re into the arts, why don’t you explore the workshops set up in the yard where local artisans put their trades on display? A wide range of their products and other merchandise lays up for grabs in the gift shop.

Máta Stud Farm

It has always been quite an event whenever Debrecen’s Sate Coach ceremoniously rolled into Hortobágy. The elite group of its most famous passengers includes Franz Joseph I and Edward, Duke of Windsor. They took rides on the carriage drawn by a team of five horses in 1852/1890 and 1937, respectively.

Boasting a proud history of 300 years, the farm is one of Europe’s traditional establishments of this kind. It also has tourist programs on offer, the most popular of which is the “puszta” horse-and-carriage ride. It sets out to the heart of the grassland where you can get close to indigenous beasts in their natural habitat. The must-see equestrian shows display hundred-year-old cowboy traditions. Fancy swinging yourself into the saddle too? No problem, enjoy the ride.

As of spring 2016, a top-notch tourist center is ready to take visitors to this prestigious facility. Be sure you check out the exhibits displaying the history of the stud farm, the impressive collection of carriages, and the workshops of local craftsmen whose trades are related to equestrian activities. Horseback riding is available after advance booking for experienced riders (children above age 9) in corral or cross-country.

You can assist the chefs in cooking lunch in the outdoor oven and (to burn off some extra calories) challenge your kids in the various disciplines of the “puszta trials.”

Hortobágy Wildlife Park – Puszta Safari The park serves as a reserve for animal species that had populated the region before human habitation and encroaching civilization drove them off. Their ranks are completed by species that still inhabit the wilderness areas of the National Park. Take a ride on one of our specially souped-up buses and check out these beasts. If you are not one of the faint-hearted, you might even risk taking an “extra safari” and get up close to them.

HOW TO

EXPLORE DEBRECEN

Tourinform’s tips will come in handy if you seek even more adventures. For up-to-date information, please pay a personal visit to our office, or check out iranydebrecen.hu. Let your smartphone be your guide and explore the historic city center by way of thematic sightseeing tours. On your mark (scan the appropriate QR code or visit debrecen.pocketguideapp.com), get set, go!

Page 63: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

You will never completely take in Debrecen unless you climb the tower of Reformed Big Church, or try to lift a “gerundium” at the Reformed College. You must see the “lícium tree,” probably the humblest symbol of the Reformed faith, as well as St. Anne’s Cathedral, seat of the Catholic Bishop, based, ironically enough, in “Calvinist Rome.” True, you can get insights into Debrecen’s past and form predictions about its future strolling in the city’s streets and squares at your leisure. However, you won’t see the whole picture until you check out the excellent exhibits at Tímárház, the Déri Museum, or Modem Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art. Don’t let these adventures into the realms of history and art prevent you from tasting a nice plate of Debrecen double sausage. Have you explored the historic city center, discovered the Big Market, mapped the small downtown piazzas, whiled away some time on the terraces and at Roncs Bar? Why don’t you kick back and enjoy the pleasures of Big Forest? Pamper yourself at Aquaticum Pleasure Bath,

relax at the Spa, or set out from the repurposed Nagyerdei Water Tower and take a leisurely stroll or bike ride in Big Forest Park. Have a go at “walking on the water” or “checking the movies” at the Mist Theater. Enjoy the magnificent sight of the main building of Debrecen University. Follow it all up with some unfettered fun time at Nagyerdei Theme Park, or give yourself a high-school challenge at Agora Scientific Adventure Center. What better way to round off your day than a delicious dinner, a top-quality classical-music concert, or a relaxing theater show? Check out the listings of Nagyerdei Amphitheater and Csokonai National Theater. If you would rather opt for the adrenaline rush of something even more exhilarating, go and root for your favorite soccer team in Nagyerdei Stadium, or party in Hungary’s biggest club, the HALL.

Debrecen and the surrounding area are so full of sights and potential adventures that it will definitely take you several days to properly explore them. Check out the tips below and make your visit meet

your very own requirements and fit your schedule perfectly.

Do not forget those at home who are impatiently waiting for your return. Browse the shelves of the gift shops in Tourinform’s office or Nagyerdei Water Tower. We do hope you are enriched with unforgettable experiences and come back soon.

SIGHTSEEING TOUR WITH EXTRAS

63

Page 64: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

If you are ready to experience pristine nature, do not hesitate to visit Hortobágy — a 30-minute drive from Debrecen — where you can find the largest grassland of Central Europe. Here you can try on traditional shepherd’s apparel, explore various techniques of handicraft and can also

assume a new identity as a mounted herdsman or a naturalist bird-watcher. You can also go on a safari in a jeep. Sample authentic Hungarian dishes cooked in sooty stew pots in the local restaurant called “Nagycsárda” and get immersed in the spirit of folk music.

EXTRATIP

Page 65: Debrecen and Hortobágy Guide 2016

Your Debrecen sightseeing tour may well yield other unforgettable experiences if you use the city as a launching pad for further outings. Located a mere 20 km from Debrecen, Hajdúszoboszló boasts Europe’s largest spa complex. Less than an hour’s drive will take you to the Nyíregyháza Zoo (the nation’s biggest and most popular), or Lake

Tisza Eco-Center in Poroszló, which is Europe’s largest fresh-water aquarium. If you have 1.5 hours to spare, you may want to venture farther to visit three UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Hortobágy, the Tokaj wine region, or the caves of the Aggtelek Karst.
