HISTORY MADE AT QAS GALLERY HISTORY MADE AT QAS GALLERY
EEXCITING times for the Queanbeyan Art Society
with the introduction for the first time of Nudes and Sculptures Competition/Exhibition and it has been described as a huge forward move of quality works. In the early 60s it was considered controversial to have
a Nude Exhibition. Judge Leigh Walker described the winning Sculpture as ‘a brilliant piece of work, fabulous hands and face, Love it’. The winning Nude was praised for the ‘Beautiful sensitive use of line and tone’. The sculptures placed throughout the gallery enhanced the beauty of the exhibition and we are bound to see more exhibitions combined with sculptures. The weekly Sculpture classes have proven to be popular and the Life Drawing classes are the backbone for the quality of the Nudes. These classes not only extend the arm of the Society but extra members have joined the ranks. The committee is keen to make the QAS a huge Community Art Centre QAS a huge Community Art Centre with more use by more art groups. The three Guest Speakers from the Queanbeyan Writers Group Queanbeyan Writers Group ‘painted’ a real picture in words and we may see a group come to the Gallery and write a story looking at painting!

CCongratulations to member Jim Sullivan Jim Sullivan on being the first to sell a sculpture
at at the Gallery. Let’s hope there are more on the horizon. I am sure the move to encourage the art of sculpture under the umbrella will be rewarded. It is pleasing to ‘dig up’ some of QAS’ history (page 6). If any members know of any old history photos I would be pleased to use them where I can. The committee have given the naming rights to the Queanbeyan Country Women’s Association for the Members/Gallery Painters July 2019 Art Competition/Exhibition. The CWA catered for our wonderful CHARLOTTE COMES HOME CHARLOTTE COMES HOME function and didn’t charge us, thank you! Well what a wonderful dual exhibition the Masters-Life Drawing-Nudes-Sculptures Competition/Exhibition is and I doubt if we have hung a higher quality exhibition in the Gallery. It is an Exhibition that should be hung for two months or even displayed at another venue. Members please start thinking about the next QAS September Art Show in City Walk, Canberra.

DDESPITE Ted’s rocky start with a car key malfunction, he managed to give a quick demonstra-tion. Thanks Louise Emmett Louise Emmett for providing Ted with materials, before NRMA came to the rescue. Soon the car was unlocked and all Ted’s equipment set up. The class was busily working on the demonstration piece. Ted first taught everyone to paint using three colours: French Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Scarlet, Cadmium Yellow, as well as white, making the most of a limited palette. Ted used Winsor and Newton Griffin Alkyd WHITE to make his under–painting dry quickly. A wonderful time was had by all. Ted has been a generous tutor, giving loads of time to help everyone with their work. Belinda Belinda IngramIngram.

A FIRST FOR QAS A FIRST FOR QAS
FFOR the first time ever the Queanbeyan Art Society will display a Nude and Sculpture Art Competition Exhibition at the Gallery and will
hang for the month of July 2019. It is an exciting addiction to the Society and weekly Life Drawing and Sculpture classes are held at the Gallery. Many of the new members have come from these two groups. A small section of the Exhibition below.
QAS MONTHLY REPORT DRAMA,CHILDERN’S ART,SCULPTURE QAS MONTHLY REPORT DRAMA,CHILDERN’S ART,SCULPTURE Drama ReportDrama Report Victoria Hopkins June Victoria Hopkins June 2019 I work on techniques for acting in the focus of screen. Working though diverse scripts being modern, monologues and or Shakespeare. We use the tv for playback of the scenes. I have a singular camera and tripod for the classes. Currently I have two students. With the potential for another two next semester (so things are looking up !) I would be keen to open up a more drop in class to the older mature senior QAS members. On a regular basis to pitching a day that would suit both myself and QAS. Run like your other groups where the attendees pay a small fee of $20 to do the classes. I can be flexible with my material and exercises. With hopefully inspiring a regularity of attendees each week! Please call me Rosanna if you need me to explain this better :) I’m home today work-ing on costumes for the wizard of OZ Plus to let you know I am now working with Canberra Youth Theatre starting up a screen program there and also Canberra Theatre Centre in the Wardrobe Department too. First one: Shakespeare in Love :)
Children’s Art Report: Natasha Verma Children’s Art Report: Natasha Verma June 2019June 2019 "Young Artists" classes have been very appreciated by the students and the parents. Starting from an introductory programme, every Wednesday 4-5 pm, we have now progressed into full terms. In all we have had over 25 new students attending the classes, with 12 new and previous ones this term. Communication channels were custom designed Flyers, personal visits, phone calls, emails, facebook and word of mouth to schools in ACT, Qbn, and Bungendore. The QAS has become extremely popular as a children's Art provider, with high quality of art. My classes have taught: Watercolor and techniques, Acrylic Art, Differentiation of colours, Still life, Sunsets and lakes, Followed famous artist's such as Matisse and Monet, Art therapy with breathing and stress relief, along with self acceptance, portraiture with Charcoal, Working with nature and experiencing seasons. The children find it a homely, loving and safe atmos-phere to express themselves.
Sculpture Report: Jim Sullivan June 2019 Sculpture Report: Jim Sullivan June 2019 Wednesday Sculpture and Life drawing - 6.30 - 9pm Group has consistently 7 participants, and up to 14 from time to time. Storage is working well and is just adequate for the number of stands we have & use. It needs a proper sensor light on side of building to ensure safe use of the narrow path alongside QAS. A temporary one and an additional light are working for now. Once the new addition is completed, a permanent sensor light could be installed (please). The group has just paid for and made 6 new white plinth stands, that are around 800mm high, and 450mm square. They store within each other to save space. Gary - on the committee - has built these for us (thank you Gaz). Cost so far $90 for MDF sheets. Gaz used his work to complete the project in his own time.
