    Death, Hell and Paradise

Death is considered the true fact which nobody can deny; it means that someone may not believe

in Allah, but he cannot disbelieve in death.

Death is a spirit out of the human body and the transition to the afterlife. According to Islam, the

spirit is the secret of the secrets of Allah, as Allah says in Quran Suwrah 17, And they ask you, [O

Muhammad], about the soul. Say, The soul is of the affair of my Lord (Allah). And the mankind hasnot been given knowledge except a little."

There is another life after death, depending on the faith of human beings or their actions, which

will end in punishments in Hell or rewards in paradise. Rewards will be granted to those who obeyed

the commands of Allah and abstained from what Allah has forbidden; and punishments will be put

upon those who insisted committing sins.

The soul in Islam is the knowledge of the unseen; it is a great secret of the almighty Allah, and

calls for respect for the soul and honoring the body after death.

First of all, Allah has created us from nothing, as He says in Suwrah Kaf, And indeed, we have

created mankind, and we know what his own self whispers to him, and we are nearer to him than his

    jugular vein by our knowledge."

Allah says in Suwrah Al Momnoon, "And indeed we created man out of an extract of clay.

Allah has decreed death upon every creation, as Allah says in Suwrah 3, Every one shall taste

death, and only on the day of resurrection will Allah reward you. Whoever is removed away from

the hellfire and admitted to paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the

    enjoyment of deception."

As Allah says in Suwrah Alanbia, And we granted not to any human being immortality before

you, Muhammed. And everyone will die, so everyone is going to taste death, and we shall make a trial

of you with evil and good, and to us will you be returned."

And as Allah says in Suwrah Al Nesa, Where-so-ever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you were in fortresses built up strong and high."

Allah had made a specific moment for everyone to pass away by force, waiting for the hereafter.

As Allah says in Suwrah Al Emran, No person will ever die except by Allah's permission at an

appointed term. Whoever desires a reward in this world, we shall give it to him; whoever desires a

reward in the hereafter, we shall give him thereof, and we shall reward the grateful ."

And as Allah says in Suwrah Al Araf, Every nation has its appointed term. When their term

comes, neither can they delay it, nor can they advance it an hour or a moment."

And as our prophet (peace be upon him) says in a sound Hadith, Everything belongs to Allah.

Whatever He takes from us and whatever He grants to us everything in His kingdom is ordained

    according to His wills."

Allah shows us that certain angels will take away the soul from the body when Allah ordered them,

and they have a leader as Allah says inSuwrah 32, Say, the angel of death, who is set over you, willtake your souls, then you shall be brought to Allah to be accountable."

And Allah has shown us that there are two kinds of angels. The first kind is angels of mercy for

believers, and the second kind is angels of punishment for disbelievers.

As Allah says in Suwrah 75, Nay, when the soul reaches the collar bone up to the throat in its

exit, it will be asked aboutwhich kind of angels will take this soul out from the body, angels of mercy

    or angels of torture?

The angels of mercy are as Allah says in Suwrah 16, "The ones whom the angels will take in death

while they are in a pious state, say to them: peace be upon you, enter your paradise because of which

    you used to do."

The angels of punishment are as Allah says in Suwrah 8, "And if you could see when the angels

of torture take away the souls of those who disbelieve in death, they slap their faces and backs

saying, taste the punishment of the blazing fire."Death is considered the end of the beginning. It means that death ends your life in this world and

begins your true life on the day of resurrection (the judgment day), because we know that Allah has

ordained upon every one of us two lives and two deaths.

We were nothing before our creation in this world, this is the first death; we will die, this is the

second death; we now already are living in this universe, this is the first life; after we pass away, we

will be resurrected in the hereafter, this is the second life. We were nothing and we will die, so there

are two deaths; we are living and we will live in the hereafter, so there are two lives.

As Allah says in Suwrah 2, "you could never disbelieve in Allah while you were lifeless, and He

brought you to life, and He will cause you to die, then bring you back to life, and then to Him will you

    be returned.

And as Allah says inSuwrah 40, telling us about the disbelievers when Allah brings them on thehereafter to account themselves, they will say, "O Allah you caused us death twice and you have

given us life twice. Now we confess our sins. Is there any way to get out of the hellfire?"

Our prophet taught us, when we go to sleep, it is proper to say, "O Allah, in your name I put my

side on the bed, and in your great beautiful name, I will wake up, so if my soul will be taken, I beg you

to shower it with your mercy, or keep it under your protection.

And as Allah says in Suwrah 41,"Verily, to those who say Our lord is Allah, and then standsteadfast on it, the angels of mercy will descend at the time of their death, saying Do not fear neither

from future nor grieve from the past, but receive the glad tidings of paradise which you have beenpromised. We had been supporting you in this life, and will so in the hereafter. Therein shall you have

all your inner-selves desire, and therein shall you have all what you ask."

And Allah also says in Suwrah 39, "Verily, those for whom the good has preceded from us will be

removed far from hell. They shall not even hear the slightest sound of hell, while they abide in which

their own selves desire. The greatest terror on the day of resurrection will not grieve them, and the

angels of mercy will meet them again with greetings, this is your day which you were promised.

So, the angels of mercy will be with the believers in the life of this world, and in the day of

    resurrection.

Our prophet explained to us this matter in a soundHadith:

"When the believer passes away, the angels of mercy will come to him with white and good smellshroud, and the angel of death will come to take his soul as Allah says in Suwrah 32, Say, the angel

of death who is set over you, will take your souls, and then you shall be brought to Allah to be

    accountable."

The angel of death will say, O good soul, come out to the mercy of Allah, and it will move out

smoothly. Then the angels whom are waiting will come quickly, and immediately they will take this

good soul from the angel of death, and put it inside the white and good smell shroud. They will

ascend to the heavens to Allah. During the ascension, the angels of every heaven will ask the angels

who are bearing the soul, to whom this soulbelongs? The angels will reply, this soul is so and so

with the best of his name. And finally when they reach Allah with this good soul, Allah will say to

them return back this soul to her body and put him in his grave, because from the earth have we

created you, and into it shall we return you, and from it shall we bring you out once again ."

Then the angels will return to the earth with the soul, and the soul will return to the body in a

different way in his grave and the angels will ask him three questions:

    1. Who is your lord?2. Who is the man sent to you?3. What is your religion? The believer will give correct answers:

    1. My lord is Allah.2. This man is Muhammed the messenger of Allah.3. My religion is Islam.

Then the angels will say to him, we knew that you, as a Muslim, would give correct answers. There

will be a gate opened to the hellfire, and the angels will say to him, look through that door! This

should be your place in the hellfire if you didnt believe in Allah; having you believed in Allah, look

through the other door, then a gate will be opened to paradise, and they will say to him, this is your

    place in paradise."

On the other hand, when the disbeliever passes away, the angels of torture will come to him with

fire shroud, and the angel of death will come to take the soul out of his body and say, O bad soul,

come out to the anger of Allah. And it will move out hard, then the angels of torture who were

waiting will come quickly, and immediately they will take this bad soul from the angels of death and

put it inside the fire shroud. They will ascend to the heavens to Allah, but the gates of the heavens

shall not open, and Allah will say to them, return back this bad soul to her body and put him in his

grave, because from the earth have we created you, and into it shall we return you, and from it shall

webring you out once again. Then the angels will return to the earth with the bad soul, and the soul

will return to the body in different way in his grave, and the angels of grave will ask him threequestions:

    1. Who is your lord?2. Who is the man sent to you?3. What is your religion?

The disbeliever will give wrong answers saying, Ha ha, I dont know. Then the angels will say to

him, we knew that you as a disbeliever would say wrong answers. So, a gate will be opened to

paradise, the angels will say to him, look through that door! This should be your place in the

paradise if you believed in Allah; having you disbelieved in Allah, look through the other door,

then a gate will be opened to hellfire, and they will say to him , this is your place in the hellfire ."

Rituals related to death are varying according to different cultures.1. There are cultures on the disposal of dead bodies, either buried or incinerated.2. In ancient Egyptian civilization, there was mummification of the bodies, because they

believed that the spirit would return to the body.

    3. In India, for Hindus, there is a ritual for the dead bodies. They burn the body and the familycomes to take the ashes of his body and move it towards the sacred river. In ancient Hindu,

when the man dies, the wife shall burn with him.

    4. According to our great religion, our Islam pays more respect and honor to the dead body. Weas Muslims should do some things for the dead body:

  • 8/2/2019 Death, Hell and Paradise

    4/4

    a. Wash the dead body using nice smell perfume.b. Shroud the deceased with 3 robes (better white) for male and 5 or 7 robes for female. c. Pray for him, ask Allah to shower him or her with His Mercy.d. Bury him under ground.

There is a very important matter to keep in mind, that is, the relation between the dead body and

we does not cut or vanish after the death, but we can do some good things for him such as:

    1. Remember him always.2. Make supplication for him.3. Make charity for needy people and ask Allah to give our reward to the soul of the dead body.4. Visit his tomb from time to time.5. Achieve what he has been promised during his life.6. Take care of his wife and his kids.

But in the grave, a lot of things will happen. We will talk about it in another lecture.

O Allah we ask you to make us steadfast in our graves, and help us to give correct answers in the

    grave.
