Dear Year 6 Student We are looking forward to meeting you in September, but before we do we have designed some exciting assignments for you to complete over the next few weeks and in the Summer holiday. We really want you try your best to complete all that you can but don’t worry if you cannot finish all the tasks.

• make it look brilliant • make it interesting • and most of all make sure you produce your best work.

In your first week at Formby High School, in September, you will hand your booklet to your form tutor. There will be certificates and rewards points for the best booklets in each group. Additional rewards will include ‘best presentation’, ‘most accurate’ and ‘most detailed’, and will be awarded by your Climate for Learning Leader. Remember that you should try to complete the work on your own. Just try your best and don’t ask your parents or teachers to help you. We look forward to seeing all your hard work in September. Mr Mackenzie Headteacher Dear Parents Please encourage your child to complete as much of this booklet as possible. They should start each page but may find that they are unable to complete them all. It is best that your child attempts this work alone. This will help tutors find out about them as a learner, which is very important for us. Thank you for your support and cooperation. We look forward to working with your children in September. Mr Cook Senior Assistant Headteacher

You cannot deny the power of a great story, immersing yourself in new worlds and amazing locations, fascinating characters, action, adventure and emotions!

When was the last time you lost yourself in a sensational story? What was it about? What made it so memorable? Why would you recommend it to others?

Many will tell you there is nothing like the feeling of paper pages rustling between your fingers, but there are lots of ways to read a good book using an e-Reader such as Kindle or iPad. You can also listen on apps such as Audible, though it’s always better to read along with the narrator too and follow the text in front of you.

If you can, check out one of these interesting tales, all of which have a theme on transition, adapting to new situations and belonging.

• Can You See Me? by Libby Scott

• Kid Normal by Greg James and Chris Smith

• No Ballet Shoes in Syria by Catherine Bruton

• Some Places More than Others by Renee Watson

• The Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson

• The Island at the End of Everything by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

• The Way of the Warrior Kid by Jocko Willink

• Wonder by R.J. Palacio

We are excited to meet you in September and would like to get to know you a bit better. The following tasks are designed to get you to reflect on your feelings about joining us and to share with us your experiences in English this year.

• How do you feel about starting FHS in September?

• Worried, excited, nervous, anxious or another feeling?

1. Turn your main feeling into a noun: worried worry excited excitement nervous nervousness anxious anxiety

2. Write your poem according to this formula:

What colour is the emotion? What does it taste like? What does it smell like? What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it feel like?

Fear! Fear is black. It tastes like cold rice pudding. And smells musty and damp. Fear looks like a dark, lonely street. It sounds like echoing footsteps following you. Fear panics me.

Happiness

Happiness is bright yellow. The taste of bananas. Happiness is the smell of new-mown grass. And a garden of bright, colourful flowers. It sounds joyful and laughing. Happiness is fun!

We would like you to write a letter to your new English teacher so we can get to know a little bit more about you. • Tell us about yourself generally first – what do you like, dislike? • Who do you live with? • Could you also tell us about yourself and your experiences in English this

year? • Which piece of work have you really enjoyed? • Is there anything you didn’t enjoy? • Do you like reading? • What books have you read this year? • Tell us what you thought of one of them. • Have you done anything outside of school that is linked to English – a

theatre trip, cinema etc? Finally, is there anything you would like us to know about you and how you like to work before we meet you? What are you looking forward to most when you come to Formby High School?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Your challenge is to

come up with an idea for a city in 2050

that could…

The BIG question…

Generate more clean and affordable energy

and/or

Make the city more energy efficient

• What might the Earth be like in 2050? How many people will there be? What impact might that have on resources?

• Will people in the future face similar problems we face now (environmental, economic, social), or will they be facing different kinds of problems?

• What might future cities need energy for? Think about London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Hong Kong, Lagos or Beijing.

• What innovations can you imagine for cities in 2050?

• How could a city be more energy efficient?

• What types of innovations might exist that will generate cleaner and affordable energy for its citizens?

• What topics or subjects at school might help you come up with an idea to generate more clean and affordable energy for a city of the future?

Think about…

Page 12: Dear Year 6 Student - formbyhighschool.com · It tastes like cold rice pudding. And smells musty and damp. Fear looks like a dark, lonely street. It sounds like echoing footsteps

• What problems do you see with using energy for these activities?

• How could you could reduce the amount of energy?

• Can you think of any problems with reducing the amount of energy?

• How might the way we use and save energy change in the future?

Page 13: Dear Year 6 Student - formbyhighschool.com · It tastes like cold rice pudding. And smells musty and damp. Fear looks like a dark, lonely street. It sounds like echoing footsteps

Future technologies…

Social and economic impacts Beyond saving or generating energy – try to list three ways your ideas could: 1. Help people live healthier lives: will it encourage people to be more

active, eat better food, connect with their community? 2. Support local business/the economy: will it provide opportunity for local

business to grow or help citizens generate income? 3. Help the surrounding natural environment: could it save or improve

habitats for animals, clean waterways or improve air pollution?

Try and match the name and picture of each piece of computer hardware with the description. The first one has been done to help you.

The main output device for the computer that displays images for

you to see.

A digital input device that lets you type instructions and information

into the computer.

The storage device where you can save your work and install programs

and games.

Has its own built in graphical processing unit designed to

produce 2D and 3D images on the screen.

An output device that produces audio so that you can hear music

and effects.

An analogue pointing device that lets you navigate menus and move

around the screen.

The brain of the computer, designed to carry out all of the

calculations and processing required.

What is Drama?. The term "drama" comes from a Greek word meaning "action" The two masks associated with drama represent comedy and tragedy. The name Melpomene represents the tragedy mask or Muse of Tragedy and the name Thalia represents the comedy mask or Muse of Comedy. The purpose of Drama is to portray life or character or to tell a story for a theatrical performance. Here at Formby High School Drama, we like to focus on our characterisation – where we develop our skills to become a character. We use our imagination, research and preparation to create believable and strong characters. Your task: CREATING A CHARACTER – THE EVERYDAY SUPERHERO. Imagine that you are to play the character of the everyday superhero in the school production. To make sure that you are fully prepared you must explore your role. Complete the boxes below, give as much detail as possible and really use your imagination to bring your special character to life.

• Any historical figure who you admire, with factual information about them

and an explanation of why they have chosen them.

• Your subject could be from the monarchy, politics, science, literature,

sport or the arts – in fact, anyone who inspires you!

• You should include an image (photo or drawing).

• You could consider people such as Martin Luther King, Anne Frank,

Florence Nightingale or Winston Churchill.

• Alternatively, you could select someone else entirely – the choice is yours!

• Think about what you would want to ask

your History Superhero if you could have

met them in person.

• What would you like to find out?

• Create a name for your the band. It has to have a musical term in it e.g. 'Rhythm Kings'

• List two styles of music they would play? • Two members can be ‘transferred’ from the global music industry. Who

would you choose? • At least two of the band members play musical instruments - what would

they be? (one has to be from an orchestra) • Two of the band come from different countries, so what music from these

countries has influenced the band?

Spend some time exploring this link to INCREDIBOX. You can practice your ‘virtual’ DJ skills and can have a go at putting rhythms together. You can create layers of sound and build amazing loops of beats … it’s seriously addictive! www.incredibox.com/

For whichever sporting clip you have just watched, you are going to mind map key words that are associated with that sport and sports performer. For example - Long Jump: Preparation, take off, landing, metres, measuring, official, etc Put the name of the sport in the cloud and then place arrows off the mind map cloud to show which key terms are used in your sport.

Using the letters of your name, complete the exercises associated with that letter. For example, if your name begins with an ‘R’, you will start by doing 30 seconds of shuttle runs. Then, move onto the next letter of your name.

Spell your name and carry out the exercises for each letter A 50 Jumping Jacks N 25 Burpees B 20 Crunches O 20 Lunges C 30 Squat P 30 sec Ski Jumps D 15 Push-ups Q 30 Sit Ups E 1 min Wall Sit R 30 sec Shuttle Runs F 10 Burpees S 20 Bicep Curls G 20 Arm Circles T 20 Triceps Dips H 20 Squats U 45 sec Battle Rope I 30 Jumping Jacks V 45 sec Plank J 30 sec Plank W 20 Push-ups K 30 sec Battle Rope X 30 Jumping Jacks L 30 sec Wall Sit Y 10 Crunches M 30 Mountain Climbers Z 20 Ball Slams

One of the new subjects you will study at Formby High School is RESPECT. This stands for Resilience, E-Safety, Social, Personal, Economic and Citizenship Teaching. You will be taught RESPECT lessons in your form class, usually by your form tutor, and a lot of what we do will revolve around discussing issues which are important for you as young people. As your RESPECT transition task, think about what you consider to be the most important issue for young people growing up today. It could be anything at all, and there is no right answer, it is just your opinion! For the task you should then:

You can present your work as a poster/leaflet within the workbook, or as a piece of writing or maybe even as something more creative like a poem. This is your opportunity to speak about what is important to you and young people your age – the choice is yours!

- We would like you to tell us about something that you value.

It could be an object (like your favourite teddy bear or a special photo)

It could be a person or a pet (like your mum or dad, or your pet

hamster)

It could be an idea or value (like the belief that everyone should be

equal, or that we should look after the environment, or that it is wrong

to eat meat)

Welcome to RAVE at Formby High School! We are very much looking forward to meeting you in September. RAVE stands for Religious and Values Education. During Years 7 and 8, you will learn about six big world religions. In RAVE we also explore the beliefs, ideas, traditions and objects that are important to people, whether they are religious or not. When something is very important to someone, we say that they value it.

– To make sure it is a good piece of work you … • should write in sentences and paragraphs • should include thoughtful detail in your work • should draw in pencil and add colour • should take care with spellings, punctuation and grammar • can use the sentence starters below to help you get going, but you don’t

have to use them if you have your own ideas. • One thing (or person, or idea) that is important to me is… • If I were to describe it (or him, or her) I would say …. • It (or he, or she) is important to me because… • I show how important it (or he, or she) is to me by…

– We would like you to …

• describe your important thing, person or idea. • add a picture of it, or a symbol to represent it. • explain why it is important to you. • explain how you show it is important – how do you look after it, or show

that you care for it, or show that it is important in your life?
