Xavier High School is a proud member
of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School
System, and has been accredited by AdvanceED (formerly the North Central
Association) since 1970.
Dear Xavier Family,
The traditions of this fine institution run far and deep. Twenty years ago, I came to
Xavier on a sweltering May afternoon for an interview to be a theology teacher. As I
walked in, the office television kept scrolling the same message – “The ducks are back!”
I was so confused. First, I was confident that the mascot of Xavier was a hawk, not a
duck. Second, I wasn’t aware that any ducks had been gone. Little did I know that each
spring, a lovely family of ducks appeared in the courtyard and when the newest
ducklings were born, the Xavier nation took responsibility for walking them and their
mother safely to the Fox River. Imagine the sight of me crossing the road flanking a
mother and six ducklings, wandering through yards and among bushes just to fulfill my
duty to the school. As long as we had a courtyard, the ducks were the surest sign of
spring. This morning, almost two full decades later, as I arrived at school for the last day
of spring break, guess who greeted me in the concourse? Our family of ducks, back
again for another spring at Xavier! What could be an even bigger tradition than the ducks? Blue and White Day at
Homecoming? Maybe. Delicious, doughy chocolate chip cookies during X-period? Not
with the new nutrition guidelines. If we were to poll Xavier alumni about the tradition
that they have the fondest memories about even today, my guess would be that the
overwhelming answer would be Food Fair. If you are new to Xavier, our International
Food Fair is held the first Sunday in May and features delicacies from around the world,
as well as a silent auction, kids’ games, the world’s greatest 50/50 raffle, entertainment,
and lots of other great experiences. Food Fair is fun for the whole family and all of the
money raised helps to provide tuition assistance for the students of the St. Francis
Xavier School System. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us at Food Fair. I am
sure you’ll agree that it is an event worth looking forward to every year.
Food Fair is only possible because we, the Xavier community, volunteer so generously
to make it happen. We need adults and young people to help set up, prepare and serve
the food, organize booths and areas, and a multitude of other tasks. In my weekly e-mail,
you will see links to both a sign-up genius and upcoming planning meetings. I am asking
each family to do two things this year to maximize the fun at Food Fair. First, sell those
50/50 raffle tickets that your child brought home (if the tickets didn’t make it home, we
can get you more!). Every ticket sold helps to raise the jackpot as well as raise tuition
assistance. Second, please consider donating two hours of service. If each member of
your family commits to two hours, you will still have plenty of time to enjoy the event
but will greatly reduce the burden on those dedicated leaders who are already busy
planning for Food Fair 2017. You can volunteer as a family or each choose your own
area of interest. Please find a way to make your family a part of the 45th annual Food
Fair on Sunday, May 7. We are a better community when we all work together for the
common good.
For God’s Greater Glory,

Prospective Xavier Student?
Shop and Compare
Do you have a middle school student who is considering which
high school to attend in the future? We suggest that in order to
make the best decision for your student, you should shop and
compare. This can be done in a number of ways. If you would
like to receive a tour of the school (preferably during school
hours) or if your son/daughter would like to shadow a Xavier
student for a day or half-day, please contact Principal Mike
Mauthe at 882-6901.
Homeless Connections
Are you interested in reaching out and making an impact in
your community? This is your chance! Every second Sunday of
the month, Xavier families serve dinner from 4 - 7 to the resi-

Shelter). Xavier’s Key Club is now organizing this tradition and
would like to invite you and your family to help! Each dinner is
already furnished by another group and just needs to be warmed
up and served. If you are interested please sign-up using this

Xavier Honor Society
The Xavier Honor Society seeks to recognize students for
excellence in their academic achievements, their
contributions to the school community and their service to
others. Students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors
were invited to apply if they met GPA, behavior, and
leadership requirements. Students were not eligible to
join the Xavier Honor Society if they have received
consequences for disrespectful conduct in class,
intellectual dishonesty, serious infractions of school rules,
or have violated the law. The Xavier Honor Society is for
those students who have exemplified “The Xavier Way”
in their actions and words.
Congratulations to the new members of the Xavier Honor
Society. There will be an induction ceremony on
April 26th. New members are expected to increase their
responsibilities and leadership within our school. Seniors
who are members for the first time must complete a
minimum of five hours of Honor Society sanctioned
service prior to being eligible to receive a gold cord for
graduation. Juniors and sophomores must complete a
minimum of ten Honor Society sanctioned service hours
to retain future membership. Cords for seniors will be
handed out on the first day of senior exams. Certificates
will be handed out on April 26th.
Again, congratulations to the new members! If you have
any questions regarding Xavier Honor Society, please
contact Mrs. McGreevey
Math League
The last math league meet of this school year was held
on March 6th at Kimberly High School. Xavier’s team 1
finished 4th in the small school division. Seungmin
Hwang and Tian Cheng (Marco) Qin earned individual
medals.
This has been very fun and successful year. Xavier
earned 3rd place overall for the year in the small school
division of the Fox Valley Math League. Seungmin
Hwang earned a place on the 2nd team overall (top 5
students) in the junior division.
All students are welcome and encouraged to join math
league. See you next year!
This year’s
Prom will
be held
Saturday, April 29th at Butte des Morts
Country Club from 7:30-midnight.
Preparations are underway, but more
involvement is always welcome. Any
junior is
welcome to join in the planning.
Meetings are announced several days before the day of the meet-
ing.
The theme for this year’s prom is “Rustic Romance”. Tickets are
$65/person or $130/couple and will be on sale April 10-13.
Tickets include a meal, 2 beverages, desserts, the dance and
entrance to the Post Prom party at Badger Sports Park, All tickets
must be purchased by noon on April 13 (no exceptions)
Juniors and seniors are invited to the prom, but due to the expense
involved, freshmen are not allowed to participate in Prom.
Sophomores may only attend as the date of a junior or senior. All
dates who do not attend Xavier must have a guest pass completed
and turned into Ms Simon at Xavier by April 21. These guest
passes will be available at the time that tickets are purchased and
must be signed by an administrator at the school the student
attends.
We expect all attendees of the Prom to also attend the Post Prom,
this is why we included it in the price of the ticket. Students who
do not attend Prom may attend Post Prom. Tickets for just Post
Prom only will be available from Ms Simon at a cost of $5/person.

Art News
The Xavier High School Art Club toured Japan over spring break—
March 17th-26th. Five current students, a Xavier alumni, and three
parents visited Tokyo, Hakone, Matsumoto, Takayama, Kyoto, Nara,
Hiroshima, and Miyajima on the adventure organized by Mrs. Zetzman
and Explorica tour group. Each student was asked to write a sentence or
two about their experience on the return trip.
“The 13 hour flight was worth it! –super fun learning experience.”
Katie Donovan
“It was cool to experience the differences in culture.” Callie Hunter
“It was amazing to be able to experience a new culture first hand.”
Sarah Murphy
“The days went by fast but the memories made will last a lifetime.” Mari Seidler
“I had such a great time traveling to Japan this spring break! Visiting Japan has widened my perspective on the world as well as led
me to better appreciate the values that America truly stands for.” Morgan Voissem
Alumni who had traveled on a spring break Art Club tour in 2006-- “It was good to travel to a country with different cultural val-
ues. I have a better appreciation of the benefits and shortcomings of my own culture and its place in the world.” George Schulze
On March 28th Roger Grunwald brought his Mitzvah Project to Xavier High
School performing his 25 minute one man play Mitzvah (which means “Good
Deed”) followed by a 25 minute context lecture and question/answer session
with the entire student body.
“The Mitzvah Project is a combination theater, history lesson and
conversation in which actor and child of survivor, Roger Grunwald, explores
one of the most shocking aspects of the Jewish experience during the Second
World War. Through the story of Christoph Rosenberg, a German half-Jew,
the one-person drama — created with director and co-author Annie
McGreevey — reveals the surprising history of tens of thousands of
German men known as "mischlings" — the derogatory term the Nazis used to
characterize those descended from one or two Jewish grandparents — who
served in Hitler's army. Grunwald's lecture delves deeper into the history that
produced these mischling-soldiers — men who were the product of two
centuries of German-Jewish assimilation, intermarriage, conversion and the striving of a people committed to calling the German
Fatherland their home…
The Mitzvah attempts to engage several socio/cultural/historical issues: Who decides what culture, race and ethnicity mean? What is
identity? What, if any, responsibility do we have to the dead? Does killing another human being have a place in a moral universe?
Do human beings have the capacity to learn from history? “
Quote from http://rogergrunwald.com/themitzvahproject/
Administration and faculty felt this was a worthwhile assembly. Perhaps parents and grandparents would like to continue the
conversation jumpstarted by Roger’s performance with your student.
Choir WSMA State Honor Choir Auditions Congratulations to Ellie Bernier, Noah Blohowiak, Emilie
Gilligan, and Kathryn Totzke who auditioned for and were
selected to be part of the Mixed or Treble State Honor Choirs
through the Wisconsin School Music Association! Over 1300
students from the state audition for only 428 spots in all state
honors ensembles (treble choir, mixed choir, band, orchestra,
and jazz ensemble), so this is an incredible honor for these
young singers!
The students will attend a camp with their choir this summer
and then will perform in Madison in the end of October.
State Solo & Ensemble Festival Congratulations to all Xavier choral students who
participated in the District Solo & Ensemble festival! We
would especially like to honor those students who received a
rating of 1* and will advance to the state festival. Xavier had
an incredible 37 events advance to state this year!
The state festival will take place at UW-Oshkosh on
Saturday, April 29.
KaBoom! HawkSwing and the Jazz I Ensemble will perform at
KaBoom! on Thursday, April 20th at 7:00 PM at Xavier.
The show will feature pop, musical theatre, and jazz music by
the ensembles, as well as some featured vocal soloists. It is
one of the highlights of the year for these ensembles and it
promises to be a great show!
You can purchase tickets for $5 at the Xavier box office or at
xaviertheatre.com.
For HawkSwing and Jazz students, there will be a mandato-
ry dress rehearsal on Wednesday, April 19th from 3:00-7:00
PM.

Volunteers Needed! We need volunteers to sign up to work the day of Food Fair in both food and non-food areas. We will
again be using the online software SignUpGenius to make it easy for people to volunteer. Please find the
link to SignUpGenius on the Food Fair page of the Xavier website, http://www.xaviercatholicschools.org/

Food Fair Silent Auction Donations/Baskets Needed
Please consider donating items to our silent auction. Our goal is to get at least 30 families to sign up to
donate items (donations may be tax-deductible according to IRS regulations; receipts will be provid-
ed). Items can be gift cards (maybe you have a few you know you won’t use!), any new item you think
people would like, theme baskets, or donations from your business. Please mark items as “Silent Auction”
and drop items off in the Xavier High School office or email Lisa at [email protected] to
make arrangements to have items picked up.
Food Fair Book Shop
Looking for somewhere to donate your gently used books? Why not bring them to the Xavier High School
office to be used at Food Fair! We welcome video games, hard cover books, paperbacks, VCR tapes, CDs,
books on tape, children’s books, comic books, vinyl records, DVDs, as well as puzzles and games.
Bake Shop
Hey Xavier parents, grandparents, students and friends, Food Fair needs baked goods! The success of the
Oven Shoppe and Cookie Booth is based upon the number of donated baked goods we receive.
Please help us out with whatever you can do. We are looking for homemade bakery and/or canned goods
(pickles, jams, etc). Our booth is in need of breads, pies, cakes, scotcharoos, puppy chow, muffins, cup-
cakes, brownies, and cookies.
Please don’t use colored plastic to cover your baked items. The committee has found that presentation is
very important to sales and the customers want to see your fine bakery. Please deliver your goodies to the
fine arts concession stand on Saturday, May 6th or early Sunday, May 7th. Thanks to all those who have
helped in the past. Food Fair wouldn’t be the same without you!

be at a premium, so please plan to arrive early.
Service Hours
It is getting close to that time of year again…SERVICE
HOURS ARE DUE! It is recommended that senior
students turn their hours in by May 15 so that these hours can
be verified. The only way that we can guarantee that seniors
will receive their diplomas at graduation is if these hours are
turned in by May 15. Hours turned in after May 15 may not
be verified in time for the student to receive his/her diploma
at the graduation ceremony. Seniors are reminded that they
must have completed 10 hours for the semester, their
category requirements and their Junior Service Project in
order to graduate. The absolute last chance for seniors to
turn hours in is Friday, May 19 by noon.
Students may begin accumulating hours for next year on or
after May 15. The absolute last day to turn in hours for
underclassmen is the last day of school (June 2) by noon. If
hours are turned in after that date/time, the student will
receive an F on his/her report card which cannot be changed
and there are no exceptions.
COME AND SUPPORT YOUR CHILDREN THROUGH
PRAYER!
Praying for Your Children Every Month
Parenting is the best of jobs and at times, the most difficult of
jobs. One where we need God to guide us and a community to
support us. This is an opportunity to join other parents and pray
for “our” children. A time to ask God to make His presence a
part of your children’s life and work powerfully on their behalf.
This is open to all parents, relatives and neighbors to pray
together for any and all of your children. No need to sign up.
Every third Tuesday during the school year from 6:30pm -
7:00pm in the Xavier Chapel.
