Trinity Times Summer 2015
“Serve Christ our Lord by welcoming, equipping & sending disciples”
To the Children of God in Christ at Trinity – May the peace of Christ fill and refresh you daily! As I write this we are facing a couple of weeks in which the expectation is that a number of new “high temperature” records will be set. As I often find myself complaining about the heat I try to remind myself of comments I made last January or so – comments about how I wish it would warm up and how I won’t complain when the heat hits in the summer. The truth is that most of us are quite capable of being dissatisfied with the conditions in which we find ourselves at any given time. The old saying that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence did not come about without a reason. Most of us even find ourselves wishing for something better or bigger or newer – sometimes even just for a change – when our lives are going well and we are relatively happy. It’s not by accident that one of the more common phrases in life is “if only . . .” – if only I had this or that or the other thing, then I would be content. St. Paul addresses this bigger issue of contentment in his letter to the Christians in Philippi. After calling on the Philippians to rejoice always, to not worry but to bring their concerns to God in prayers which are also filled with thanksgiving, and to continue meditating on what he has shared with them about God and his love for them, Paul once more gives thanks that these Christians have had the chance to, and have chosen to, support him materially in his ministry. But he then reminds them that the sharing they did would ultimately be more for their own good than because of his need, for he has learned how to be content in all circumstances.
The secret to that contentment? Paul can do all things through Christ, who strengthens him to be what he needs to be and to be content with whatever things he has or situations he faces (Philippians 4:4-19)! That does not mean that Paul would not appreciate something different – as seen, for example, in his repeated prayer for healing from the “thorn in his flesh”. But he has learned that God works in and through the realities, both good and bad, easy and hard, in our lives to carry out his will for us and in us as we live in his strength while accepting our own weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). It is in this trust that Paul is, and we are, able to experience the peace of God the Holy Spirit living in us (Ephesians 2:1-22). And it is in this peace that we experience the contentment that allows us to focus not on ourselves and meeting our own needs but on serving God and loving our neighbours as our Saviour has done for us. I pray that God will bless us all during the summer, whether we are at home, work or away on holidays, and I wish for each of you the peace of and in Christ Jesus that leads to contentment.

Trinity Times Summer 2015
“Serve Christ our Lord by welcoming, equipping & sending disciples”
Christmas in July??
"Silent Night, Holy Night, all is calm, all is bright" 16 years ago on Sunday, December 5th, over 1650 peo-ple gathered at Evergreen Park to sing these words and hear the message of a Saviour, born for us - Jesus the Christ! Were you there? Do you carry a memory?
Is it time to do another LIVE NATIVITY?
Trinity Lutheran in 1999 spear-headed a Live Nativity. It consisted of several work crews - publicity, costumes, animals, construction of stable and pens, refreshments, co-ordination of shepherds, angels, Mary & Joseph and their donkey, wise men and their horses (we could not find camels), music and choirs, and a short worship ser-vice with the reading of the Christmas Gospel, a prayer by the Mayor of Brooks for our town, and the singing to-gether of Silent Night with candles. We also collected food for the food bank and toys for Community Christ-mas.
Obviously one congregation did not do this alone. We invited all churches in the EID Ministerial to join us in pre-paring to share the Good News with the whole community of Brooks and surrounding area. Members from other churches came onto some of the committees or took ownership of some of the preparation. Many, many hands and hearts joined in making this afternoon happen. We even showed up on the evening news in Lethbridge and Calgary! It was a day of witnessing to the Holy Spirit who made it all happen.
Is it time for a visible powerful witness in our city? With new hands and hearts, same Good News, and many believers witnessing together? It will require commitment, prayer, preparation and joy - OR it will not happen. We ask that you prayerfully consider whether or not you might be one of the people serving on a work crew. What
gives you joy? Sewing, building, sharing the word, work-ing with animals? How might your hands join others to make this happen? If you are willing to be a part of this we ask that you let the church office (403 362-4259) know before the end of summer so we can meet together to begin our plans right away in the fall. ______________________________________________________________________________

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH WOMEN
The next TLCW meeting will be on September 2, 2015 at 10:00 am. All ladies are invited to attend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Trinity Lutheran Church Women are in the prelimi-nary stages of considering a “Prayer Shawl Ministry”
This ministry exemplifies God’s unconditional love for us that wraps, enfolds, comforts, covers, gives solace, mothers, hugs and shelters every one of us. Many blessings are prayed into each shawl, which can be knitted, crocheted or sewn.
Compassion and serving others are the cornerstones of this prayerful ministry that will reach out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration and joy.
If you like to knit, crochet or sew and would enjoy bless-ing others with your God given talent, and feel God’s call-ing to be part of this ministry, please contact a member of TLCW or the church office for more information.
Food For Thought
General William Booth (1829-1912) walked
the streets of London in the late 1800’s to
preach the Gospel of Jesus Chrsit to the
poor, the homeless, the hungry and the
destitute, - the lost and forgotten of his day.
His goal was simply that they know Jesus
and His saving work on the cross. He
founded the Salvation Army.
Let us prayerfully consider his prophetic
words given in the early 1900’s.
“The chief danger that confronts the coming
century will be
Religion without the Holy Ghost
Christianity without Christ,
Forgiveness without repentance,
Salvation without regeneration,
Politics without God,
Heaven without Hell.”
Trinity Times Summer 2015
“Serve Christ our Lord by welcoming, equipping & sending disciples”
Article from: steward-
shipresources LCMS July 2015
"Soon afterward he went on through cities and villag-
es, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the
kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and
also some women who had been healed of evil spirits
and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom
seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of
Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and
many others, who provided for them out of their
means" (Luke 8:1-3).
There were many who provided out of their means for
our Lord's work of proclaiming and bringing the good
news of the kingdom of God while He was on earth.
Think about that for a moment. These pious women
gave to God in the flesh for God the Father's work of
bringing the good news of God's kingdom. Their gen-
erosity, which was moved by the generosity of God
Himself to them in the healing of their infirmities and
evil spirits, was employed so that others could benefit
as they had. The means they provided was put into
God's service to feed and clothe and provide shelter as
Jesus and the twelve travelled preaching, teaching,
and healing.
That's amazing. These women were widows who had
been oppressed by demons. They were forgotten,
thought of as nobodies. The world didn't think much
of them, or perhaps that they were just in the way. Re-
gardless of what the world thought, God forgets no
one. No one is a burden to Him. He cares for the wid-
ow and the fatherless. He puts the solitary into a
home. And more than that, He brings them the good
news of the kingdom and lets them be a part of build-
ing it by their giving of what He has provided them.
He presses their gifts into His service to His glory.
And they are not forgotten. They are inscribed in the
Holy Scriptures as a monument of what giving from
out of their means does. It helped to turn the world
upside down, which happens to be right-side up, rec-
onciliation and healing through what Jesus accom-
plished on the cross. (Acts 17:6).
This is what your giving to the church does also. It
provides the ministers of the Gospel food and clothes,
house and home, all that they need for this body and
life so that they may preach and teach, and bring the
healing of the Gospel of Jesus's death and resurrection
to those who need it, those who are homebound and
infirm, those who are sick and suffering, those who
are bedeviled by evil spirits, depressed, and plagued
by guilt and shame. Your gifts are put to use for God's
work on earth to bring the good news of His kingdom
which has no end.
Who wouldn't want to be part of that? And you are!
Thanks be to God. And it does not go unnoticed. Your
pastor gives thanks for it and prays for you. And so
does your Lord. And the angels rejoice over one sin-
ner who repents and believes. You help to make that
happen. You do it because someone else has made it
happen for you. ____________________________________________________________________________________________
KEEPING IT REAL: Living
the Jesus Life in a Secular
World
Too often the gospel becomes abstract doctrines we're
supposed to believe instead of the living Lord Jesus
himself, present in his Word. When that happens, then
the Christian life becomes unreal as well. We're left
alone with the law as an ideal that we have to make
real by our works. Christianity becomes mere talk that
has no connection with reality at all.
This conference takes us back to the gospel of the Re-
al Presence of the incarnate Jesus in Word and Sacra-
ment, to give us his life to be our life. When we die
with Christ by faith, we find ourselves in this world as
it really is, fallen but his, preserved by him for re-
demption in Christ. Jesus gives us a real life to live in
this world as the Body of Christ, to give ourselves
away in love to our neighbors in our vocations and to
bear witness to the world at large that it still is God's
world.
Presenters include Dr. Jonathan Sorum speaking on
"Following Jesus: Bonhoeffer's Recovery of the Reali-
ty of the Christian Life," Dr. Robert Benne on "The
Church's Public Witness," Pastor Thomas Jacobson on
"Vocation: Priests in Our Own Life," and Pastor Jay-
nan Clark as the Banquet Speaker for Saturday even-
ing.
Our event will take place immediately before the
LCMC Annual Gathering in Dallas on October 4 - 7
and in the same hotel and conference center (Embassy
Suites Hotel and Conference Center). We invite you to
join us for this important conference!
Place: Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center
HOW CAN I HELP?
Many of us struggle to discover our spir-itual gifts, often believing that we don’t have one. Whatever spiritual gifts you may (or may not) have, there are many chances at Trinity to share in the ministry that we do as God’s people in rather simple ways that at first glance may not
look too spiritual. But when we use the abilities God has given us to help with simple things because we wish to say “Thank you” to God for his love or out of a desire to help others because we have been so blessed by God even the most simple acts are a part of ministry in the name of Jesus. Here is a list of some “simple acts” of Christian love that help our overall ministry happen at Trinity – many have a signup sheet on the bulletin board across from or next to the church office and can be done on a one time, weekly or monthly rotation!
Kitchen recycle (cardboard, tin, cans and bottles) Special events set up / take down (especially tables and chairs for funerals, ideal for a family or families working together) Flowers for worship (we already have someone getting the flowers, but we invite families to provide flowers in honour of special occasions or in memory of special peo-ple in their lives Set up / clean up for coffee on Sundays (the sign up for this one is in the upstairs kitchen and usually involves at least two people) VBS support (in addition to daily positions such as crafts, games, etc., there is the chance to provide snacks and other supplies – check with the coordinator, the infor-mation and signup sheet in the entrance way, or the of-fice for more information)
As well, there are many opportunities for similar “simple acts” through the worship committee (in addition to the flowers noted above you can do things like stock the chil-dren’s worship bags, keep pew cards updated and even sharpen pencils!), the library committee, the Board of Christian Education, the Board of Trustees, the Trinity Lutheran Church Women and other groups – all you need to do is ask and we will find a fit for you. God bless you as you consider how you can help in even the smallest and most simple ways, regardless of age or any other considerations.
