Dear Parishioners, Recently we were advised that the driveway leading from Ferndale Street up to the entrance of the church presents something of a safety hazard. Accordingly, it has been strongly
suggested that the driveway be used only to drop-off the elderly or infirm, or by people needing to make use of the ramp to the Ferndale Street entrance to the church, such as funeral directors or ambulance personnel. The driveway ought be used only to drop-off, and not for parking. We hope to have a sign installed before too long that will indicate restricted access (for those mentioned above) and no parking. We respectfully ask that everyone observe this restricted use of the Ferndale Street driveway for the good of those mentioned above, as well
as the safety of all who come to Mary Immaculate church.
This weekend we have the annual archdiocesan campaign to raise funds for the seminary, retired priests, Centacare and the Mary Mackillop Catholic School Access Fund. See page 2 for further details. Materials to take home will be left at the back of our churches.
Please see below for the latest updates . In Christ, Fr Scot Anthony Armstrong

The Rosary and The Philippine Revolution
On Feb 28 1986 a headline in the Chicago Tribune newspaper read " Guns Fell To Rosaries in Philippines Revolution"
During these times the citizens of the Philippines were poor and while President Marcos and his wife lived in luxury. The people wanted to elect a new president, Benigno Aquino, but was assassinated in front of his wife and children as he stepped off a plane to run for office against the incumbent President in Manila. His wife, Cory Aquino, became active in protesting the Marcos regime. The people clamoured for Cory to run for president and when she was presented with over one million signatures urging her to do so she fulfilled the people's wish.
Marcos called a snap election in 7 February 1986 which turned out to be a violent and fraught event. Marcos was fraudulently declared the winner by his corrupt government as he took control of the
media and sent out the military to quell protests.
Cardinal Sin of the Archdiocese of Manila urged a peaceful protest and the Catholic people came out in droves. They surrounded the military tanks and armed soldiers while praying the Rosary, singing hymns. Masses and prayer vigils took place in churches. This prayerful protest continued for almost a week. Suddenly and unexpectedly the soldiers stepped away from their tanks, put down their guns and joined the peaceful crowd.
Marcos, sensing that all was lost, fled the country on Feb 26 as the whole nation took to the streets in celebration. Subsequently prayers of thanksgiving and Masses were offered to God for this bloodless - and in many respects, miraculous - revolution.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a devotional practice whereby we exercise the mind and heart in desiring to receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, either as a preparation for participation in the Mass, or when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion. Since Christ himself is the ultimate goal of every human desire, the value of a well made spiritual communion is very great. "When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you." (St Teresa of Avila, the Way of Perfection, Ch35). St John Vianney taught that making a spiritual communion has an effect like that of blowing on embers to make them flame up again, so the love of God flames up in the heart by means of the spiritual communion. The most generally known form is that of St Alphonsus de Liguori: "My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please enter spiritually into my soul. I welcome you, I love and adore You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen."

MASS READINGS First Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9
Seek the Lord while he is still to be found, call to him while he is still near. Let the wicked man abandon his way, the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn back to the Lord who will take pity on him, to our God who is rich in forgiving; for my thoughts are not your thoughts, my ways are not your ways - it is the Lord who speaks. Yes, the heavens are as high above earth as my ways are above your ways, my thoughts above your thoughts.
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm 144 (Said by all)
I will bless you day after day and praise your name for ever. The Lord is great, highly to be praised, his greatness cannot be measured.
The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures.
The Lord is just in all his ways and loving in all his deeds. He is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts.
Second Reading: Philippians 1:20-24, 27
Christ will be glorified in my body, whether by my life or by my death. Life to me, of course, is Christ, but then death would bring me something more; but then again, if living in this body means doing work which is having good results - I do not know what I should choose. I am caught in this dilemma; I want to be gone and be with Christ, which would be very much the better, but for me to stay alive in this body is a more urgent need for your sake. Avoid anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the gospel of Christ. The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God
Alleluia, Alleluia! Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son. Alleluia!
Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16
Jesus said to his disciples: `The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard. He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day, and sent them to his vineyard. Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place and said to them, "You go to my vineyard too and I will give you a fair wage." So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same. Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing round, and he said to them, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?" "Because no one has hired us" they answered. He said to them, "You go into my vineyard too." In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, "Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first." So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each. When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each. They took it, but grumbled at the landowner.
"The men who came last" they said "have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day's work in all the heat."

He answered one of them and said, "My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on one denarius? Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the last-comer as much as I pay you. Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why be envious because I am generous?" Thus the last will be first, and the first, last.'
