Dear Parents

Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed a lovely break over the Easter period. The autumn term was rather busy so I hope the children, (and yourselves) managed to squeeze in some time for rest and relaxation.

Thank you to those of you who came to watch our sharing assembly on the last day of term; I appreciate that it is not always easy to attend due to work and family commitments. I’m sure you will all agree that it was a huge success and

that the children were outstanding. Throughout the morning, I felt incredibly proud of each and every one of them; they really are a credit to you and your families. As I reflect back to the start of the academic year, I don’t think I could have been offered a more kind, charismatic or enthusiastic class. I feel very fortunate to be their teacher and to be in a position to support them in anyway I can.

Instead of focussing on a particular value this term, the whole school will be adopting and embedding a new acronym: SHINE. Each letter represents a word that the children will become more familiar with as the term progresses. The weekly value award will be directly linked with anyone of the following

During Science lessons, we will be looking at animals, including humans, and habitats. Topic lessons promise to be very exciting, as we will be exploring earthquakes and volcanoes. In French we will be consolidating past vocabulary and covering the new topics of ‘Food’ and ‘Going into town’. We

will also learn simple rhymes and songs to help us learn new vocabulary. If your child conducts any research or produces any work at home, please can you encourage them to bring it into school? It would be great if they could share their learning with others and display their efforts within our classroom.

Start of the Day

The school gates are opened at 8:30am, with school opening at 8:40am. On arrival, children are expected to put their own things away (snacks, reading records, water bottles) and prepare for the day ahead. Please say goodbye to your child at the main entrance rather than coming into the classroom, (unless

you need to speak to Mrs Webb, Mrs Williams or myself.) This helps the children to become more independent and settle down to learning more quickly.

Snack Time

In order to promote healthy eating, we ask that parents send in a piece of fruit or vegetables only for morning snack. (Due to the risk of choking, please can you ensure that grapes or cherry tomatoes are cut in half?) If you have registered your child for milk, this will be provided in the morning. Please provide your child with a named bottle of water.

Forest School/PE

During the summer term, your child will be given the opportunity to attend Forest School on Tuesday afternoons. Due to numbers, Year Four will be spilt into two groups. If your child’s surname begins with A- H, they will take part during the first half term and if their surname begins with I- Z, they will have their turn after the holidays. As a school, we are exceptionally fortunate to be to be able to work with Mrs Rae and offer this provision; keeping numbers low will help to ensure that everyone is able to maximise their learning opportunities. school clothes and their sweatshirt. (Old clothes and waterproofs are essential please.)

Our regular PE day is Thursday and this half term we will be focusing on athletics and cricket. (This will change to tennis and rounders after the school holiday.) Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school at all times. They need a pair of appropriate PE plimsolls, a white t-shirt and navy blue shorts or joggers. Please make sure all items are clearly named.

Prince William Award

During Monday afternoons, Year 4 and 5 are going to be taught by Mrs. S. Jeffery from the PWA (Prince William Award). This will offer children a structured curriculum featuring facilitated workshops and community projects, with lots of opportunity for reflection. It also gives students the chance to embed knowledge and behaviours through experience. Reading VIP

Every Friday, a member of Hercules will be chosen to take home the class reading ‘VIP Scrapbook.’ The children will have the following week to write or draw about their favourite book and encourage others to read it. Including exciting paragraphs from the text, photographs or even comic strips will capture the children’s imagination and help to highlight the importance of

reading within our school. Just be careful not to give too much of the plot away!

Please ensure that the scrapbook is brought back to school on the following Friday so that we can share it with the rest of the class and pass it onto the next child. Thank you.

Homework and Reading

We ask that you listen to your child read every day for at least ten minutes and discuss the text with them; questioning will really help to ensure their

understanding and develop their inference skills. Please use their reading record to notify us when you have read with them or alternatively, you can encourage them to write in it. (A minimum of five entries over the course of seven days please.) Spelling and maths homework is given out on a Monday and needs to be completed by the following Friday. Failure to fully complete or submit this work on time will result in your child having to miss break time and/or lunchtime.

Finally, at the start of this new term we would like to remind you of the importance of regular attendance at school, whenever possible. Our target is 95% because it has been proven that children who attend less than this can suffer damage to their education. 95% attendance is still the equivalent of 2 weeks’ missed learning over the year. Children who attend fewer than 90% of sessions can find this having a serious impact on their learning: this is equivalent of 4 weeks missed learning, or 100 missed lessons over the year.
