Dear Parent,

I understand that you are scared to wave your child goodbye and leave him in a teacher’s hands don’t worry if you cry!

I’m used to weeping parents It’s hard to leave I know. But it’s time to share him (just a bit) To help him learn and grow.

Let me reassure you That I’ll give your child my best I’ll wipe his tears, soothe his fears And change his dirty vest!

If your darling child is full of cold I’ll blow their nose all day Just like you, I’ll care for them In a special way.

I’ll treat him like I would my own I’ll catch him from a fall and If there is ANY problem I’ll be sure to tell you all.

It’s true he’ll grow to love us They’ll talk of school a lot It doesn’t mean they hate you And that you should lose the plot!

I’ll tell you a secret.. That when your child is here They talk to me as much of you Of this please have no fear.

You’ll always be their mother Whilst teachers come and go To them you are their number one This I truly know.

Soon you’ll see some changes In your little girl or boy They’ll become more independent And to see this, it’s a joy!

I’ll teach them all I have to give To share, climb and to write. But, to you they safely will return To tuck them in at night!

Dear Teacher , I know you're rather busy First day back, there's just no time A whole new class of little ones And this one here is mine

I'm sure you have things covered And have done this lots before But my boy is very little He hasn't long turned four

In his uniform this morning He looked so tall and steady But now beside your great big school I’m not quite sure he’s ready

Do you help them eat their lunch? Are you quick to soothe their fears? And if he falls and hurts his knee Will someone dry his tears? And what if no-one plays with him? What if someone’s mean? What if two kids have a fight And he’s caught in between?

You’re right, I have to leave now It’s time for him to go I’m sure he’ll learn so much from you Things that I don’t know

Yes, I’m sure they settle quickly That he’s fine now without me I know he has to go to school It’s just so fast, you see It seems like just a blink ago I first held him in my arms It’s been my job to love, to teach To keep him safe from harm So, when I wave goodbye in a moment And he turns to walk inside Forgive me if I crumble Into tears of loss and pride I know as I give him one more kiss And watch him walk away, That he’ll never again be wholly mine As he was before today.

The Parents say to the teacher:- To this the teacher replies

Our hope is to develop your child into a happy, open-minded, responsible and caring young adult who is prepared to face the challenges of the future with confidence.

Our school acknowledges that parents are the primary educators and as a professional body we aim that the entire staff of RBKIA works in co-operation with the student and the home to help each individual pupil to reach his/her potential. It is the staff’s dedication and hard work in the days prior to school that there has been a smooth transition and progression of the first couple of weeks of the academic year. Kudos! The school resumed and the teachers felt as though the students had never been away as their enthusiasm, energy and excitement resonated in the corridors and classrooms. We are indeed glad to have them back!

Each student is a unique individual with special gifts and talents – we will leave no page unturned to motivate and encourage them to discover their individual talents. However to achieve academic success the key elements are hard work, dedication, determination and consistent effort which is possible within a firm but fair code of discipline. We are proud of our students and have no doubt whatsoever that they will make a significant contribution to RBKIA. It was a pleasure to see your concern and commitment for your child and the numbers during the first curriculum morning held on Saturday, 30 July 2016 proved it all. Thank you. I look forward to the same enthusiasm in attending the forthcoming interactive curriculum sessions which we plan to organise this academic year, in order for you to understand the programmes better. Together, we can and we will make a difference to the institution and your child! We are eager to start a wonderful year with you all! - Monica Sarang Principal

Our new Units of Inquiry are here !!

Grade 1

On 18-7-16 Grade 1 started with the Unit of Inquiry on ‘Myself’, in which the students learn about their own

personal abilities and interests. They find out similarities and differences between themselves and their

friends. In this Unit of Inquiry the children will discover themselves and the people around them. They will

learn to accept and value each other’s opinion. The students will get an opportunity to speak about

themselves, explore their strengths, and understand their weaknesses.

PYP In this UOI students will develop an understanding of various effective ways of communicating

with different audiences. Learning experiences, such as reflecting on different forms of communication

and understanding about communication tools, as well as studying modern and early means of communication,

will make them knowledgeable. Enrichment through guest speakers and field trips will make them good

thinkers and better communicators. Students will empathize with different classes of audiences and creatively

chose suitable modes to communicate with them. Surveys, situational analyses and such other tasks will help

them develop social and communication skills.

Grade 3

As we entered the second week of the new

academic year, students of Grade 3 began

their first journey of inquiry into ‘Natural

Habitats’. This comes under the theme

‘Sharing the Planet’.

The central idea for this unit is “When

interacting with natural habitats humans

make choices that have an impact on other

living things”. Students will be exploring

how plants and animals adapt to their

natural surroundings, how

interdependence is vital in an ecosystem,

and how human beings bear the

responsibility of safeguarding all living

things.

In order to set their minds in a thinking mood, students participated in a group task called ‘House Hunt’, in which

they identified different living creatures, found their habitats, and discussed the reasons for their choice. With the

season apt for further exploration, a number of activities, such as a nature walk and a visit to a zoo are lined up. We

eagerly look forward to a series of fun filled learning experiences ahead!!!

PYP Grade 4

In connection with our current UOI, “A person’s behavior and appearance can lead to perceptions”, a Tuning In

activity was conducted in the library. We decided that a “lesson outside the four walls of the classroom” was a good

idea to spark the curiosity of our young learners. We believe that through collaborative learning and guided

questions our students can reach their conclusions in a faster and more appropriate manner than through the

“chalk and talk” approach.

Grade 4A and 4B students learned through a fun experience how knowledge, skills, and behavior are connected in

our society. The importance of good behavior in society was highlighted through a simple physics experiment. This

activity illustrated the students on what is important to us as individuals in a society in order to lead a balanced life.

Once the students returned to their classes they worked in groups to further discuss their understanding of the

activity. As a wrap up of the lesson, they wrote a reflection either as a group or individually.. Here are a few of their

thoughts:

“To understand more about our UOI we went to the library and there we learnt that knowledge and skills go hand

in hand, but they are not enough to live in a society. We also need good behaviour to support our skills and

knowledge.”

PYP “… We learnt the importance of good behavior and that a person cannot live in a society with

just skills and knowledge…”

- Aaira, Ved, Ravisha, Seher, Archit Grade 4B

“Ma’am used an analogy in which she used two forks as knowledge and skills which could not be balanced by

themselves on a glass (society). Only when she used behavior were the three elements could be balanced. I loved

this session…”

- Aanya Grade 4A

We are sure that if students keep up their enthusiasm we will have a really successful academic year. Way to go,

fourth graders!

Grade 5

For the next few weeks the grade 5 class will delve in the world of Sharing the Planet. This inquiry will lead the

students to investigate a few atrocities targeted at children around the world. We will be guided by the central idea:

“Children around the world encounter a range of risks, challenges and opportunities.” The class will unpack this

central idea conceptually by utilizing some of our key concepts, mainly form, perspective and reflection. This inquiry

should guide towards the understanding of the types of risks, challenges and opportunities for children (form). The

way we perceive other people can lead to inequality, segregation, discrimination, and their cultural differences

(perspective). Students will be able to review their own perception towards underprivileged community and take

action towards helping them (reflection). They should be able to study what the world is doing or not doing in order

to support underprivileged children.

Throughout the unit, students will work towards creating their own organizations geared for child help. They will

carry out research using available resources in order to back up a presentation about this organization. This whole

process will be enriched by the integration of other disciplines. In English, they will make non-chronological reports.

Along the way they should be able to work through designing brochures. They will also be able to write their own

poetry. In Math, they will be able to interpret the data.

During our journey of inquiring into the unit, as action, we will plan visit to an orphanage, or other NGOs and

stretch out helping hands.

MYP

On 27 July 2016, during the ASA periods, students from Grades 6-10 were ushered to the auditorium. Once we had gathered there, our Principal, Ms Monica Sarang, introduced us to Ms Rashmi who is in-charge of service. Through her power point presentation, she made is aware of the importance of Service as Action. Later, we were divided into groups and instructed to differentiate between Service as Action in order to test our basic and previous knowledge. Each group voiced out their opinions and thoughts on the topic. It was interesting to see how many of us had a clear idea about Service and/or Action. We were now clear about

Service which is a voluntary, unpaid action by an individual/group to benefit the community, while Action is carrying out a plan or agenda.

Then, Ms.Rashmi Talreja then showed us a presentation which covered all the aspects of Service. It was an eye opening introduction to the countless layers of the program. Different services a student could partake in- Student-initiated, school-initiated or even subject/unit—initiated were shared with us. We were also informed about the learning outcomes and expectations that we needed to meet.

I along with my peers learnt a lot about the complexity of Service and the satisfaction one gets when one is involved in making a difference to someone, some place all the time. Now

we know why it is such an essential part of the IB and how fortunate we are to be in this program and in this school RBKIA.

Then, Ms Monica Sarang introduced us to Ms Meera Rangarajan and Ms Sunitha Manambrakat who are the in-charges for conducting SOF Olympiads in our school this year. Ms Meera Rangarajan also briefed us about SOF Olympiads for various subjects and announced that these test will be scheduled during December this year and January next year. I am convinced that such

competitions will be a platform for us to develop our research, organization, thinking and communication skills. We had short talks by Grade10 Pranav Lakan and Grade 9 Varun Badrinarayan who had bagged prizes in these written tests in the previous years. This was indeed encouraging for students like us who need to further develop our existing skills. In fact, this encouragement was needed for certain students who have the potential to achieve greater heights!

MYP On 27 July 2016, during the last two lessons of the day, we were directed to the auditorium for a briefing on ‘Service as Action’. One of our basic MYP requirements is to contribute to the society by conducting social services. Firstly, we were asked to differentiate between Service and Action, which helped us to clearly know what each of these terms meant. Then, Ms Monica Sarang and Ms Rashmi Talreja clarified how Service as Action plays an important part in the curriculum of our school. They told us about

the activities we could conduct to help the underprivileged. The whole presentation revolved around how we could play a role in this society to provide services to the needy by spending quality time with them and by raising funds for them. We now know the difference between ‘service for and service with’. In my opinion these services that we do would give us an opportunity to help people and encourage us to become better individuals. To sum it up, the presentation was a great one and if we follow the right steps, we could make a huge difference to the society we live in!

Math Activity In The Library Today, we had an activity that was conducted by Ms Monica Sarang, our Maths teacher during our math lesson. This activity in the secondary library was about finding 2 capital cities by simplifying ratios. In this activity, we used more of our critical thinking and communication skills! We then moved on to read an article on ‘Per drop, more crop’ which was linked to global context—globalization and sustainability. A research was based on this, which would focus on Criteria C (Communication) and D

(Application in real life). We needed more guidance on ‘how to research ’. Ms Uma Gandhi, our Teacher Librarian, taught us how to do so. She took us through the different stages of research, the importance of a bibliography and how to write a bibliography in ‘MLA’. This activity was informative and taught us a skill which would be helpful and necessary for lifelong learning.

MYP A week ago, I started my very first day at RBKIA. I was the typical nervous yet surprisingly organised new entry! There was also a little extra pressure on me regarding my art skills due to the fact that, I was the only Art student in my class of 25, Grade 9 students. I entered the school relatively early only to find out that I was the first student to arrive. I spent around 10 minutes trying to figure out whether I was late or early or if I was even in the right classroom. When I was introduced to my homeroom teacher by my Co-ordinator and our Principal, I realised I was in the right classroom! They explained the basic rules and regulations and told me what to do in case I needed help. After a while, students started to file into the classroom and some of them walked up to me and introduced themselves to me. I immediately felt welcome at RBKIA. As the day went by, I realised that all of my worries were actually quite baseless. As soon

as my homeroom teachers caught wind of the fact that I had some artistic abilities, they gave me some amazing opportunities that helped me get more involved with my peers. I soon met my other teachers, all of whom were very supportive and welcoming. I flew through the rest of what turned out to be an action-packed week, full of assignments, homework and a jam-packed schedule. I now feel relaxed, happy, excited and proud to be a student of RBKIA! -Dipthi Dinesh Grade 9

Time never really mattered Hands are shaking My brain is scattered Heart is breaking I’m on hand and foot waiting I hope you find my missing pieces In the world that seems I hope you find the happiness That turned into floating dreams I’ll be unmoved, unfazed Looking at the window, still waiting Waiting, for those floating dreams

MYP You are seven years old and the teacher asks you to share what you want to be when you grow up. One day I wanted to be an astronaut, a few days later a doctor, yet another day an engineer. Aspirations were more governed by glamour of the profession and how rich I could get doing that. Until one day I stumbled upon or as I would d like to call it ‘Serendipitied’ on the word ‘Entrepreneur’, when a successful businessman visited us for a school event and introduced himself as one. My dad explained jokingly, it means “Jack of many trades”. I took liking to the concept immediately. After all, how many people know exactly what they are good at until they have tried many a feat?

Seeing my interest, my dad, who is a USC (University of Southern California) alumnus,

suggested I should Explore Entrepreneurship. What better than mingling with like-minded

individuals at USC? The USC program sounded fun and short enough to wet my taste buds. I

was excited at the opportunity to interact with students from all across the globe, coming

from different parts of the worlds, varied cultures, speaking different languages and yet

thinking the same – Entrepreneurism. To me, it is a state of mind, a way of looking out at the

world and constantly watching for opportunities.

This summer has been a real eye opener with so much to absorb. The program at USC has given me an early exposure to the conundrum of what it takes to be an entrepreneur. From case studies and real life experienced guest speakers to hearing the powerful pagan roar, I got to experience it all. Having taken a 4 week edifying course, I have really come to broaden my knowledge about what entrepreneurship is all about. Over the course of this month, many sagacious entrepreneurs have taken time off to spread their knowledge and insight to us new entrepreneurs in the making. My teachers taught me how to be more confident as a speaker and how to network with others. The most important lesson I learnt is never give up.

If you fall, just dust yourself off and stand right back up! How true it sounds!

I want to thank my parents, teachers, friends and the USC staff members for this wonderful opportunity to pave my path to be an entrepreneur. It is not something you do for eight hours a day but all the time you are awake. You look for opportunities…they are all around!

MYP GRADE 10 PERSONAL PROJECTS TAKE OFF PERFECTLY

The MYP PERSONAL PROJECT is a student-centered and age-appropriate practical exploration in which students

consolidate their learning throughout the program. This long-term project is designed as an independent learning

experience of approximately 25 hours. The PERSONAL PROJECT formally assesses students’ ATL skills for self-management,

research, communication, critical and creative thinking and collaboration. The PERSONAL PROJECT encourages students to

practice and strengthen their ATL skills, so as to connect their classroom learning engagements with their personal

experiences. This will help to develop their interests for lifelong learning.

MYP Grade 10 students must successfully complete the externally moderated PERSONAL PROJECT to be eligible for IB MYP

course results and the IB MYP certificate.

The aims of the MYP PERSONAL PROJECT are to encourage and enable students to:

participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context

generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation

demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time

communicate effectively in a variety of situations

demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of learning

appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments

This year, students of Grade 10, were briefed by our Principal Ms Monica Sarang and me through a PPT. We gave them small

chits of color paper. Later, we asked them to write down their chosen topic and their name on the reverse. During our next

weekly collaborative meeting in the senior secondary library, these chits were arranged on a table. Supervisors picked up a

chit based on the topic of their choice. Students were also told about this selection procedure.
