SENIOR UNIFORM CHANGES 2013/2014 After consultation with learners, parents, Board and staff we will be implementing a modification with regards to Whangaparaoa College senior uniform. From next year the senior uniform will be worn by Year 11-13 learners. We will be making 2013 a transition year which will mean that Year 11 learners can wear either the junior or senior uniform. However, from 2014 we will have the expectation that all Year 11–13 learners will be in senior uniform. We have endeavoured to order sufficient uniform to cover the availability for Year 11 learners to purchase senior uniform for 2013. This stock will be available in January when the uniform shop is opened prior to the beginning of the school year.

Career Exploration

One of the most valuable things a young person can do when exploring the reality of their options is to take every opportunity to:

Be involved in work experience.

Visit workplaces or industries.

Talk to people involved in the field of work they are considering.

Attend events e.g. Career Expos, tertiary training organisation’s open days and information evenings.

Research websites such as ‘Career NZ’ tertiary providers and industry organisations.

Encouraging students to be proactive in their research from a variety of sources will ena-ble them to realise which options are the best fit for them. Researching career options helps students focus on want they need to have in order to get to where they want to go. Peter Davies - Careers Advisor [email protected] or ph. 09 4249177 ext 234

DO YOU HAVE RYTHYM? NO? WELL GARY CAN HELP WITH THAT...

Gary Brooker has been teaching drums at Whangaparaoa College for approximately 8 years. His dedication to students and their learning sees many of Gary’s students stay with him for many years. No drums at home? No need - Gary can teach your child the basics without the need to purchase a drum kit straight away. If you are interested in having your son or daughter learn the drums, an application form is available from the Performing Arts Office.

Year 8 Visit to the Replica 13th Century Pa at Te Hana

As part of their Social Science studies investigating the impact of colonisation on the Maori, all Year 8 classes visited a replica 13

th Century Pa at Te Hana.

Learners participated in a Powhiri, and learnt the reasons and purpose of many aspects of traditional Maori culture. Modern Maori culture was also discussed, and compared to the traditional culture, and the reasons for changes made were explained. Afterwards, learners exclaimed that they had found it very interesting, and that they now had a better understanding of the reason things were done. Learning about the Tohunga, training of boys for warfare, and how pa fortifications worked to protect the tribe, had learners enthralled. Ka pai! Sue Smith. Head of Learning Y7 & 8

Shave 2012

On Friday, 26 October, Ben Sutcliffe and I organised a Shave12 event, in conjunction with Shave for a Cure, the biggest cancer fundraising event in New Zealand. After a sign-up session, we eventually had 19 learners and teacher Mr Middleton shaving their heads alongside us. The event happened at lunchtime and the auditorium filled up in a matter of minutes. Jono Dempsey was the MC for the event and he did an awesome job. As a group, we raised over $2,000 which has been split between two New Zealand charities. Half will be going to the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Foundation, who founded Shave for a Cure. The other half will go towards the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand. We’d like to give a huge thanks to Mrs White, who helped us a considerable amount throughout the planning and execution of the event. We’d also like to thank Mrs Argar, Mrs Plant and the Prefects for their awesome help! Brendon Carr

The Annual Sports Dinner at Whangaparaoa College brought a good deal of excitement as we honoured the learners who had achieved in sport during 2012. The event began with a passionate haka by Erueti Tutaki, and a couple of beautiful waiata by Erueti and his wife Freda that welcomed the guests into the beautifully decorated gymnasium. Our guest speaker this year was Olympic Kayaker Ben Fuohy, and his speech gave the learners, staff and parents a wonderful insight into being successful in sport. Ben also handed out a record number of Merit and Blues Awards to the 38 awardees. This year brought about a good deal of success in both the individual and team settings. The Senior 1 netball team came 7

th on the North Shore, the girls football

team,1st in their Auckland-wide league and the 10 metre Pistol Shooting team won the

NZ Championship, meanwhile in individual events Racquel Sheath, Rachel Smith, William Wallis and Joe Bailey all excelled. We had the pleasure of watching a kick-boxing display by our internationally ranked kickboxers - Ricki Byass and William Wallis. This was a great event that showcased all that is good in sport and highlighted the pride we have in the successes that 2012 has brought. Graeme Williams, Head of Sport

Year 7 & 8 Boys Touch Rugby 1 November saw the Year 7 and 8 boys touch rugby teams participate in the North Harbour Intermediate Schools Touch Rugby Zone Day, held at Sunnynook Park. Whangaparaoa College had two teams participating in the tournament. The Year 7 team, many of them new to touch rugby, found that they had a very tough draw and consequently lost all their games. They did however, play with a lot of determination and commitment. I was impressed with how they persevered and clearly improved with each game. Their last game against Glenfield Intermediate, was their best of the day and was rewarded with an excellent try by Eli Pears-Scown, who was superbly set up by Lachie Gibson-Owen after his quick, darting run and well-timed pass to Eli. The Year 8 team had a very successful day. They ended up in the semi-final against Northcross Intermedate after winning their pool games against Northcote, Kristen and Belmont. The semi-final was a hard fought match. Whangaparaoa scored first after a scorching run down the side line by Spencer McDowell. Northcross quickly scored back leaving the score at 1-1 at half time. The second half saw Northcross edge away to finally win 5-1. Michael Baty

Whangaparaoa win North Harbour 7’s Plate Trophy. Whangaparaoa pulled off a major coup by defeating Orewa and then Northcote to clinch the plate trophy in the annual North Harbour 7’s tournament on 30 September at Albany. After a difficult opening round, Whangaparaoa found themselves in the plate section with a first up match against local rivals Orewa. The match was evenly contested with Whangaparaoa up 12-5 at halftime. The team was able to maintain this edge, eventually ending up winners 24-12. The try scorers were Trent Mayes, Kieran Jenkins, Andrew Creevey and Jake Sheehan. This meant a match up with Northcote in the final. Whangaparaoa went in as underdogs having lost to Northcote in the opening round. Again the game was evenly contested throughout with Whangaparaoa finding themselves 19-14 down with time up. Trent Mayes made a good run down the sideline and was able to keep the ball alive. In the final move of the match Jake Sheehan dotted down under the posts after a sweeping move that went through many pairs of hands. Jake was able to slot the conversion giving Whanagparaoa a 21-19 victory. Jake scored 5 tries in the tournament and was one of the leading players. Everybody contributed to the success, The squad was, Jake Seehan, Justin Koia, Sean Wills. Kieran Jenkins, Sam Seddon, Dallas Courtney, Sumner Maxwell Brown, Sean Plant, Andrew Creevey, Tiaan Oosthuizen, Trent Mayes and Jandrei Nelson. Special mention goes to Stephen Jenkins, for his excellent coaching. Mr Fitzgerald, Manager

“Come and have a Fun Family Day” at the Stanmore Bay School Gala Sunday 25 November 10am-2pm.

Stanmore Bay School’s gala is more than a fundraising event - it is now one of the highlights of the Hibiscus Coast community calendar. Where else can thousands of children and adults enjoy free entertainment, delicious food, pick up a whole pile of bargains and celebrate the start of summer – all together, at one place, on one day! Plus, buy a $5.00 raffle ticket and be in with the chance to win a stunning Toshiba Tablet AT300 worth $700! The gala will feature joy rides as well as loads of other ground-based rides, music, goods, raffles, refreshments and a wide variety of stalls from 10am to 2pm. There will also be a helicopter on site offering rides along the Peninsula! Stanmore Bay School PTA Chairperson Carla Webb says "all money raised from this years gala will go towards upgrading Technology resources, giving the children of Stanmore Bay an opportunity to have the extra learning chances that technology can provide." “Everyone pitches in,” says Carla. “Parents, teachers, students, local businesses and members of the community – it’s not just great for the school, it’s fantastic to see everyone in the area come together for the day.” Children will love the rides this year including the ‘Water Walkers’, a pool based activity where you literally get the chance to walk on water! We also have the vertical bungy, pony and mini jeep rides, train rides and the all time favourite ‘Wax Hands’. Of course Santa will be there for photos and the little ones will be catered for rides to suit their age groups. New this year is a Crèche for Under 5s in the Junior Playground Area, a Farmers Market and Car Boot Sale. A crowd favourite, the silent auction, will be running all day with over several thousand dollars worth of donated goods. An excellent time to secure some of those much needed Christmas presents. A bumper crop of food and drink stalls including American hotdogs, burgers and Select a Sandwich, to the children’s favourite candyfloss, will keep the crowd’s hunger at bay. There will also be loads of hampers and tempting pantry items. The gala begins – rain or shine – at 10am.
