Dear Parents and Friends of SGS, The HRIS Cultural Festival was an excellent experience for all the students
who participated. They workshopped in the ensembles during the day and
then entertained the large audience with a fabulous concert in the evening.
All of our SGS students learned a great deal and enjoyed the experience.
They also performed well in their various ensembles. Thanks to our Director
of Music, Mr Jason Buckley, for organising the students and to Mrs Tori
Saunders and Mr Graeme Feeney for attending the Festival activity,
supporting the students on a big day, which had the added difficulty of a late
night due to the New England Highway being blocked requiring everyone to
travel through Jerry’s Plains to get home safely.
Next week some students will have the opportunity to hear Simone Easthope
perform for them at School. Simone, an Upper Hunter local, who is an Opera
singer, performing across the globe, is home in Muswellbrook for a short time. We have this wonderful
opportunity thanks to her father Peter who works at school and has arranged for us to have a performance
and hopefully inspire many of our passionate singers.
The inaugural Scone Grammar School Stockman’s Challenge was a great success on Monday with a strong
contingent of riders enjoying the Stock horse patterns, the roping and the jumping events on offer. A huge
thank you to all the parents and local community members who helped this event to run so smoothly and
also to Miss Anne Davies for her passion and interest in all things equestrian, for suggesting the event and
working hard to make it happen.
Please remember to pray for our Year 12 as they sit their trial HSC examinations over the next week.

Primary News from Mr Feeney It was a great privilege to attend the HRIS Cultural Festival held at HVGS last week, together with Mrs Tori
Saunders and a group of dedicated SGS Primary and Secondary music students. This was a really valuable
experience for our students, as they workshopped in different music disciplines throughout the day under the
leadership of various choral and instrumental tutors and then presented ‘the fruit of their labours’ in an outstanding
evening concert. It was amazing to see the high standard of what they were able to produce and also to sense the
enjoyment and enthusiasm they felt in their opportunity to participate and perform.
I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Jason Buckley and Mrs Tori Saunders for helping to facilitate this special
activity and also thank the many parents and family members who travelled down to support the students in their
evening performance.
Year 5 students have been away this week at their Year 5 Camp on
Milson Island and from all reports, are having “a brilliant time”. Highlights
have been the high ropes course and vertical challenge with many of the
students pushing themselves and overcoming personal fears. Staff report
that it’s been great to see the other students encouraging those that have
been scared and also appreciating that, for some an achievement may just
be climbing the ladder, while for others it’s going around the whole
course. Please continue to pray for the students and the staff attending,
Miss Ireland, Mrs Tesoriero and Mr Holden, as they conclude their camp
and travel home on Friday afternoon. The bus is due back at
Muswellbrook at 4:30pm and Scone at 5:00pm.
Hopefully, you will have seen recent advertising for enrolment places in Kindergarten Classes for 2017. Two
classes are currently filled, with 18 students in each class, and spaces are now available for a possible third class. Do
take the opportunity, where you can, to share this news and encourage friends, extended family, neighbours and
other local contacts you may have, to consider this exciting opportunity and contact the School for further
information.
We received results this week for the 2016 ICAS Spelling Competition. Congratulations to the following students
on their achievements:

Sadly, we are saying goodbye to Tadhg and Matilda Magner next week, as they prepare to relocate back to
Ireland. It has been such a delight to have had Tadhg and Matilda in the School and we will all miss their friendly
manner, good humour and active contribution into school life. Tadhg has been our Primary Boys’ Vice Captain in
2016 and I have appreciated his commitment to this role during this year. We wish them both all the very best as
they continue their educational journey in Ireland and look forward to news from time to time of their overseas
adventures.
A reminder that students who have been selected as the new Semester Two SRC Reps, will be presented with
their SRC badges during Chapel next Monday, 8 August. Parents and visitors are most welcome. Chapel (Years 3-6)
begins at 11:30am in St Luke’s Church.
Good Humour for the Week

What do you think of the new Australian Olympic team uniform? I like the way it identifies those who wear it as
Australian sportspeople. It has meaning. A few weeks ago, I spoke about ‘joining God’s team’. When we join Jesus’
team, by accepting him as our saviour, we have to put on the uniform of His team. According to Ephesians 4:24, we
have to put on “the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Our uniform isn’t
the green and gold (not canary yellow by the way!) of the Australian Olympic team, but righteousness and holiness;
living in a way that reflects our identity as members of Jesus’ team! Wearing that uniform doesn't make us a member
of the team - being saved by Jesus does - but it's an outward demonstration of our identity. The Bible says when you
join Jesus’ team, you must “put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be
made new in the attitude of your minds”. This is to live Gods way, as we run the race set out before us.

With National Literacy and Numeracy Week happening in August, The Yellow Cottage would like to
provide some insights into how we embed literacy and numeracy into our play based early childhood
education programme. We will focus this week on Numeracy.
We know that children learn more in the first four–five years than at any other time in their lives so by the time
they enter kindergarten they are learning experts. They achieve this by being immersed in the real world:
watching, listening, playing, exploring and experimenting; learning through practice, trial and error with the
support of our fabulous staff. Numeracy is everywhere at The Yellow Cottage. It is about more than just counting.
Recognising patterns, sorting and categorising objects, talking about time and the patterns of the day, measuring
and calculating amounts, arranging objects in space and identifying shapes, are all examples of mathematical
thinking that contribute to numeracy. Materials and resources that allow children to problem-solve and explore the
world ‘mathematically’ are therefore key elements in the development of numeracy. Blocks and other construction
materials, puzzles, and opportunities for patterning and sorting using, for example, found materials such as shells,
seeds or leaves, all provide experiences that encourage mathematical thinking and the use of mathematical
concepts and language. Don't forget to complete our very short survey about our programme on the Skoolbag App. We appreciate your feedback.

Year 12 Maths News By the time you read this, Year 12 will be undertaking their Trial HSC exams.
As part of their preparation for the Maths Exams, 6 students travelled to Sydney in the recent school holidays to
attend a series of lectures organised by the Mathematical Association of NSW and presented over two days. These
lectures have become an annual event and are given by very experienced teachers, many of whom are also HSC
markers. Kirinya Harvey and Jasper Heaton attended two days of Extension 2 lectures, whilst Vienna Dowell,
Hannah Beiboer, Natalya Catzikiris and Sam Laurie attended a mixture of 2U Mathematics and Extension 1
Mathematics lectures, depending upon which course(s) they are studying. All students including Mr Bustos and me,
agree that the experience was very worthwhile, even though the days were very “brain-draining”! Mr Bustos and I
would like to congratulate the students for making such a great effort to attend the lectures. We sincerely hope
that their efforts will be justly rewarded.

HRIS Secondary Athletics On Monday, 25 July, approximately 70 students travelled to Newcastle to compete in the annual HRIS Athletics

On Monday 1 August, Horses’ Birthday, Scone Grammar held the inaugural Scone Grammar School Stockhorse
Challenge at White Park. This followed a weekend school at the same venue where the children were able to practise
camp drafting skills and show jumping. The three days were an enormous success. We had showjumpers from E
Grade to A Grade showcasing their talents and giving the spectators a thrill as they completed their courses. The
stock horse events tested the children’s ability to open and close gates, complete a ridden and led pattern, circle
around drums carrying a coat and crack a whip.
We are very grateful to the Australian Stock Horse Society for supporting this event and for providing some excellent
judges.
The results of the day were equally exciting –
