Dear Parent, Thank you for your interest in the 2016/2017 Parent-Child Program. The program offers interactive play, singing and finger games, story time, snack and craft activities for parents and young children. This letter provides helpful information about the program and contact information for the class teacher. Sample Class Schedule Arrival - free play in classroom (change shoes if you wish, wash hands) Work on a project - rotates between gardening, baking, painting, toy making/craft Clean up the room Circle time Wash hands Grace Snack Teeny tiny puppet show Walk in yard to feed chickens and goats Optional outdoor play on Kindergarten playground, if available Class Participation: As adults, we model appropriate behavior so the children can learn from us. Please do not feel as if your child must participate in all the activities. At circle time and at puppet show time, if your child does not want to join in, please join the circle yourself and do the songs and gestures. Even if he or she is playing in a corner, the child is taking in all that happens in the room. Observation is a form of learning. Our program is designed to give you support and ideas of things to do with your child at home. Snack Time: We sing a simple grace, giving thanks for the food we eat. "Blessings on the blossom, blessings on the root, blessings on the leaves and stems, blessings on the fruit, blessings on our meal ”. At snack time, if your child is done, it is okay for him or her to leave the table, but please have the food stay at the table. Sharing and Conversations: Most children this age cannot share. We offer alternate toys to the child and encourage redirection. We also ask that the child not bring toys from home. However, conflict does arise and when it does, it is important for the adults to be attentive to the situation, for example, by redirecting the child’s attention. Frequently we can become engaged in adult conversations and our focus shifts away from the children. Please be ready to limit your conversations to times when the children don't need as much focus (such as on walks or playing outside). This is also important at story time. Please help model listening behavior by joining in with the children when the puppet show is presented rather than visiting with the adults.

Discipline and Parenting Styles: Because the children are with their parents during the program, they view their parents as the authority figures, not the teacher. Each parent is responsible for monitoring his or her child’s activity in the classroom and is asked to help with conflict resolution. I am available to help with conflict resolution (for instance when two children want the same toy) and am a resource for consultation about discipline challenges. Because there are many different styles of parenting, I ask that we respect each other and offer understanding when challenges arise. Parent Education and Child Development: I am committed to providing you and your child the best experience possible. I appreciate all feedback and welcome your questions. I strive to present materials that will increase your understanding of your child and child development. Diapering: We have a changing table in the classroom with a few supplies. Please bring all the supplies you need for diapering and dispose of the used disposable diapers in the bags which are located above the changing table. Refund/Class make-up Policy: Due to the limited size of the classes and the program, we regret that we are unable to offer make-up sessions or refunds for missed classes. Attendance: To get the most from the program and enjoy all of the activities, it is helpful to arrive on time. In the event that you will not be able to attend a class, please send me an email or call me. Parking: The upper parking lot is the closest to our classroom. In the event that the lot is full, please park in the lower lot. Pedestrian traffic is not allowed on the school driveway for safety reasons, so please follow the footpaths to the upper campus.
