The Mission of The DeBose Foundation is dedication to excellence in Classical Piano Performance, distinguished by qualitative teaching and performance-based outcomes. Supported by program endorsements and partnerships, alliances with schools and studios, support provisions include “outreach” activities and interactive projects. Certified Contestant Status: Open to all Teacher Studios’ student pianists currently registered with a piano teacher or studio. Available to international students enrolled in or sponsored by a studio with established Residence in the United States. Contestants are eligible to receive Scholarship Awards, Competition Trophies, and Certificates of Participation.

DEBOSE ONLINE PIANO COMPETITION – APRIL 17, 2021

NETWORK SPECIFICATIONS

1. Performance Length: 15 minutes. Using one camera, one angle, the entrant must be entirely visible in the shot: the contestant’s face, hands, and feet must be clearly visible throughout the performance.

2. Live Performance via Zoom. Presentations made on acoustic pianos are preferred, but digital pianos are allowed. Contestants shall perform in the Instructional Studio. Retain a copy for your records.

3. Hardware requirements. Contestants and judges should maintain a minimum network connection speed of 5Mbps. Laptop, Desktop, or optional Mobile phones are permitted. Zoom software will need to be installed.

SOLO - TWO CONTRASTING COMPOSITIONS. The TTPS® (Tri-Trac-Pedagogy System), is designed to accommodate variances in talent/abilities/skills. Within this system, student pianists are provided opportunities to (1) Remain where they are; (2) Elevate from average to accelerated, (3) Elevate from late starter to average, and (4) Accelerate to higher levels (i.e., college equivalency repertoire). Solo Competition Program must be memorized and performed; contestant and scholastic classifications (Public, Private, Charter, and Parochial).

1. ONE selected from Standard Piano Repertoire (Required List or Comparable), and, 2. ONE chosen from Standard Piano Repertoire (Alternate/Choice List or Comparable).

REPERTOIRE LISTS: REQUIRED AND ALTERNATE/CHOICE, will maintain the traditional historical piano standard, with periodic revision (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, and Twentieth Century). Each program must reflect contrasts in style and historical period.

DEBOSE FOUNDATION AWARDS The Awards Recital Performance (Online) will be the culmination of the Piano Competition-Festival. Recognition of Participation and Honors are subject to Validated by an Independent Auditor. Studios will receive Awards via USPS

The Tourgee DeBose National Piano Competition Foundation, Incorporated (aka – The DeBose Foundation) is exempt from Federal Income Tax under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donors may deduct contributions as provided in Section 170 of the Code. Bequests, legacies, devises, transfers, or gifts are deductible for Federal estate and gift tax purposes as they meet the provisions of sections 2055, 2106 and 2522 of the Code.

INDEMNIFICATION AGREEMENT

Images and/or videos taken during this EVENT may be used at the discretion of The DeBose Foundation for archival purposes, documentation and/or publicity, exclusively for The DeBose Foundation. To protect the privacy and rights of all participants, publishing or posting recorded material WITHOUT PERMISSION is prohibited Parent or Guardian consent to allow participating youth, (hereinafter, “Contestant”) to participate in the DeBose National Piano Solo Competition. It is hereby agree to indemnify and hold harmless the DeBose Foundation, its board, officers, personnel, employees, members, agents, contractors, vendors, invitees, judges, volunteers and any other person, firm, individual or corporation, their heirs, administrators, executors, successors, and assigns charged or chargeable with responsibility or liability, from and against any and all claims, lawsuits, demands, and/or causes of action for personal injury, death, property damage, costs and expenses, including attorney fees, arising out of or in any way connected to the Contestant’s participation in the DeBose Piano Competition, including but not limited to any acts or omissions of negligence. This indemnification shall extend to all honors, rights, or awards bestowed because of the Contestant’s participation in the event Acknowledged at submission.

Such third parties may provide these services to schools, studios, and contestants, and they are required to maintain the confidentiality of your information. ORGANIZATION PROFILE

The Tourgee DeBose National Piano Competition, established in l974 at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has developed into an annual Competition-Festival presented by the Tourgee DeBose National Piano Competition Foundation, Incorporated and the Southern University Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This annual commemoration is named for Tourgee DeBose, former Chairman of the Southern University Division of Music and Piano Department. For more than thirty years of service he was an innovative pioneer who motivated scores of music students; an influence that exemplified intense discipline and scholarship towards excellence in Music. As a specialist in music literature analysis and master of piano performance technique, his career as a teacher rivaled his success as a concert pianist of the highest caliber. Artist diplomas, awards and recital/concert programs and reviews, kept in the Foundation Archives, attest to the breadth and scope of Professor DeBose’s capacity and accomplishments. Uniquely, DeBose lived-in-and-of-a-time that prevented appropriate recognition deserved for his historic contributions and pianistic achievements. This event is a commemoration to his life and legacy to youth and music. Currently directed by its Founder, who has guided the growth of this program, the strength and longevity of the Competition is the result of university sanction and support, community involvement, and local, state, and regional funding from the private and public sector(s). The Mission of the DeBose Competition-Festival is dedication to excellence in Classical Piano Performance. Specifically, the purposes are: (1) to provide a competitive milieu for student musicians who are dedicated to excellence and achievement in classical piano performance; (2) to discover musical talent among young musicians who are contestants and non-contestants; (3) to promote musical achievement by providing pre-professional performance opportunities; (4) to make available to the community performances by nationally and internationally acclaimed concert pianists; (5) to provide scholarships and awards for competition contestants and participants at various proficiency levels General community support has been secured through individual interest, support and volunteerism, and financial contributions from social, civic, cultural, and educational organizations. Each year the competition staff of volunteers works to develop new audiences and expand community outreach. University units, community organizations and parent support groups have contributed time and effort to encourage attendance and/or participation of youth whose primary environment may not provide cultural enrichment venues.
