Dear Friends of the Land Trust: A remarkable feat that best characterizes 2016, a benchmark year for the Orange County Land Trust, was our land protection accomplishments which together resulted in a 25% increase in the total amount of protected lands. This achievement was spurred by a growing demand for land conservation among landowners, along with a wave of new project opportunities knocking at our door. Fortunately, we were more than ready and able to tackle this task on hand, in large part due to the hiring of our new Director of Conservation and Stewardship Matt Decker. To help accommodate a growing organization and to better expand our capacity and role in the community, the Orange County Land Trust relocated to new office space in the Town of Cornwall in the Hamlet of Mountainville. We celebrated this move with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. The Land Trust staff and board of directors were joined at the celebration by: Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus, Senator William Larkin, Assemblyman James Skoufis, Planning Commissioner David Church, Bea and Lisa Stern of the Ralph E. Ogden Foundation, and other community leaders. In 2016, our organization also welcomed Amanda Fuller and Adrian Goddard to the board of directors., as well as Stuart Turner, the Land Trust’s new Board President. We are proud of the year we had and we owe so much of what we were able to accomplish to you, our supporters, whose generous donations are behind each and acre that we are able to protect. I would also like to thank our strategic partners for helping to make our achievements possible, including: Orange County Government, Land Trust Alliance, Open Space Institute, and Scenic Hudson. Orange County Land Trust and Quassaick Creek Watershed Alliance hosted a community cleanup of Crystal Lake in the City of Newburgh. In just three hours, a group of dedicated volunteers removed nearly 7 tons of garbage.

In 2016, donations from the community totaled $258,997.00, accounting for 17% of the land trust’s income. County funding of $51,814.00 accounted for 4% of our income and $1,174,772.00 in grants accounted for 78% of land trust income**. Interest income from various funds accounted for $16,443.00 or 1% of income. In addition, the land trust received in-kind donations of land and services totaling $1,064.00. Total assets in 2016, including investments and land, were valued at $7,959,116.00. **NOTE: The Land Trust entered into a land transaction towards the end of 2016 to purchase an easement. The easement was to be funded by a land acquisition grant totaling $1,093,772.00. This accounted for the large amount of cash on hand, which was higher than in previous years, as of December 31, 2016.

2016 SOURCES OF REVENUE

In 2016, 70% of income was allocated to land protection and conservation, for a total of $332,176.00. About 22% of income was allocated to management and support, for a total of $103,223.00. In the area of development, $37,550.00, or 8% of income was allocated to provide these services.
