Dear Friend,

Welcome to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, our second mainstage show of the 2013-2014 Season and one of the enduring classics of musical theatre.

The production history of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum reads as a long legacy of firsts. Its characters are inspired by the works of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus, whose use of songs and music has been considered by many an early form of musical theatre. In the 1960s, Forum burst onto the stage as a farce—and the first Broadway show in Stephen Sondheim’s career to feature both his music and lyrics. D.C. has a special connection as well: it was here that the song “Comedy Tonight” was added to solve a problematic show opener, following a pre-Broadway tryout at the National Theatre.

The Shakespeare Theatre Company production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum marks yet another first, the STC mainstage directing debut of our Associate Director Alan Paul. Alan’s sense of comedy and timing and his boundless enthusiasm for musical theatre make him the perfect director for this production. I have great faith that this is only the beginning of a long, successful directing career for Alan. I feel confident you will see his remarkable talent in tonight’s production, and you can say, “I saw his work at STC first!”

Many of our talented cast members have a New York acting pedigree, on Broadway and beyond, and several are making their first STC appearances in this production. Bruce Story, Pseudolus, was the brilliant Bottom in last season’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream here, and Tom Story endeared audiences in The Winter’s Tale last spring. Please help me warmly welcome all of our artists, as you enjoy this classic ‘comedy tonight.’

Thank you for your continued patronage.

Warm regards,

Michael Kahn Artistic Director Shakespeare Theatre Company

It’s the spring of 1962, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is in trouble. It had taken the talented trio of Burt Shevelove, Larry Gelbart and Stephen Sondheim four years and a seemingly endless series of drafts to put the musical together. The show had gone through a dizzying number of producers, directors and stars before settling on Harold Prince, George Abbott and Zero Mostel. Most frustratingly, there was no finale. Instead, Pseudolus and Hysterium crossed downstage and engaged the audience in a coy attempt at suspense:

PSEUDOLUS. Come back tomorrow night and see Hysterium win his freedom—

HYSTERIUM. Oh Pseudolus!

PSEUDOLUS. Or die in attempt!

Curtain.

As fate would have it, the proper ending would be found through changing the beginning. Forum’s original opening number, “Invocation,” started in a suitably classical tone:

Gods of the theatre smile on us,Those who look down on actors,And I’m sorry to say who doesn’t?Bless our show and smile on us.

But George Abbott didn’t like it. He didn’t think it was “hummable.” Consequently, “Invocation” was revoked; Sondheim would use it as the opening number for his 1974 adaptation of The Frogs. Instead, for the first of the show’s out-of-town tryouts, in

late March, 1962, at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Sondheim came up with a song called “Love is in the Air.” This song is charming, sweet and appears as underscore at the top of Act Two. It also appears, for unknown reasons, in Mike Nichols’ film The Birdcage, when Robin Williams and Christine Baranski duet. In New Haven, however, the number (and the show) didn’t work. Nobody could figure out why. As Larry Gelbart said, “Audiences laughed at the show but they didn’t like it.”

In April of 1962, Forum moved to the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. Still, the show felt unfinished. Richard Coe, the critic for The Washington Post, suggested the unthinkable, closing the show three weeks before it reached New York. George Abbott, who had a reputation as “the show doctor,” was stuck. He was used to coming in at the last minute to fix Broadway shows before opening, but how was he supposed to punch up his own show? “I don’t know what we should do,” he said, “I think we should call George Abbott!”

• • •

Forum had started as a labor of love, an attempt to return “low comedy” to the Broadway stage. As Shevelove said of New York in the early 1960s, presumably in reference to musicals of the Oscar Hammerstein variety: “There were plenty of touching, even tragic, lovers, plenty of dream ballets, and plenty of important truths, stated and restated, but no fun.”

Bringing Roman comedy to Broadway had long been one of Shevelove’s dreams. In 1938, while an undergraduate at Brown,

Comedy TonightThe Making of a Modern CoMedy ClassiC

he wrote the lyrics for Plautus Potpourri, an irreverent adaptation of Plautus’ Mostellaria. In 1942, while getting his Master’s at Yale, Shevelove mounted a musical called When in Rome, based on two more of Plautus’ plays: Miles Gloriosus and Pseudolus.

The third time would be the charm. Teaming with Larry Gelbart, a joke writer for Sid Caesar, and Stephen Sondheim, a brilliant young songwriter fresh off the success of writing lyrics for West Side Story, Shevelove & Co. methodically pieced together a plot combining the best of Plautus’ plays. The result, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, features a veritable who’s who of ancient Roman comedy: ingenious house slave Pseudolus, young lovers Hero and Philia, unhappy old married couple Senex and Domina, lecherous pimp Marcus Lycus and his cast of courtesans and eunuchs, Erronius, “the oldest man living in Rome” and, of course, Miles Gloriosus, the ultimate braggart warrior. The script also calls for a Mostellaria, a haunted house which is revealed to be nothing of the sort.

Above all else, Forum is a masterpiece of farcical plotting. As Gelbart would later write: “Add or subtract one character and his or her absence or altered presence affects the behavior of every other character in the piece.” Sondheim concurred, calling Forum the “tightest, most satisfyingly plotted and gracefully written farce I’ve ever encountered.” Shevelove, Gelbart and Sondheim had achieved the seemingly impossible: a musical comedy that obeyed the classical criteria laid out by Aristotle. In 1972, Shevelove noted the utter academic seriousness of the project, easily mistaken for low-brow silliness: “We preserved the classic unities of time, place, and action. We had no anachronisms or sly references to today. We used Plautus’ characters, but had to invent a plot (the original plots are negligible) to accommodate the characters we wanted to use.”

The overall effect is of a crash course in the Plautine dramaturgy of mistaken identities, stock characters and farcical reversals that would define comedy through Shakespeare, Molière and Shaw, all the way up to the modern situation comedy. As Sondheim says, “Everybody thinks that it was whipped up over a weekend because it plays so easily. The plotting is intricate, the dialogue is never anachronistic, and there are only two or three jokes—the rest is comic situation. It’s almost like a senior thesis on two thousand years of comedy.”

• • •

Sondheim speaks the truth—mostly. One thing was whipped up in a weekend. Back in 1962 in Washington, Forum was in trouble. As a last, desperate measure, the team called in Jerome Robbins, who had turned the play down in 1958 in order to direct Gypsy. The problem, Robbins said, was the opening number. It didn’t set up the show. Sondheim replied that he had already written a new opening number, “Love is in the Air.” That song may be charming and hummable, Robbins replied, but it wasn’t funny. After a weekend spent at his piano, inspiration struck. Sondheim emerged from his Washington hotel with a new song and an immortal classic: “Comedy Tonight.” The rest is history.

About the Playwright

The life of the Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254-184 B.C.) remains shrouded in mystery. Most of what we know comes from Cicero, writing a century later. His 21 surviving plays exist only in fragments, many having been cut and adapted for performance in “acting versions.” Even his name is unclear: “Titus” was the Latin word for “phallus,” “Maccus” a name for clowns in ancient Italian farce, and “Plautus” derives from the Latin term planis pedibus—a “flat-foot,” or a pantomime dancer. Given these clues—theatrical rather than literary texts, and his possession of arguably the first stage name in Western civilization—it seems likely that Plautus was involved in the theatre as a

craftsman first, and an artist second. Put simply, he made them laugh.

According to one story, Plautus left his homeland of Umbria at an early age for Rome and an apprenticeship in the theatre. He lost his savings in an overseas business venture, and was forced to work as a servant in a grain-mill. Most likely, this story was inspired by similar incidents in Plautus’ plays, which are filled with shipwrecks, kidnapping pirates and clever servants. Like the seacoast of Shakespearean comedy, the world of Plautus’ plays is a comic fantasyland in which the world is turned upside down, transformed in startling ways. Children overcome parents; slaves outwit masters; romance defeats reality.

In nearly all of Plautus’ plays a young, middle-class lover is blocked from his beloved and enlists the help of a clever slave, whose wild scheme forms the contours of the plot. Alongside the clever slave and young lover, Plautus’ company of broad stock figures includes such still-recognized comic figures as the squabbling older married couple, the greedy pimp and the braggart soldier. Plautus’ verse could be both witty and bawdy, and his love of mistaken identity often resulted in violent scenes of farcical slapstick.

Despite his obscure origins, Plautus’ plays were famous throughout the ancient Roman world. Since their rediscovery in the mid-1400s, they have proven enormously influential in the development of Western drama. Shakespeare modeled The Comedy of Errors on Plautus’ The Menaechmi Twins. Molière’s The Miser owes much to his The Little Cash Box. The “Miles Gloriosus” would evolve into the Capitano of the Italian commedia dell’ arte, not to mention Shakespeare’s Falstaff, Corneille’s Dorante from The Liar (1644) and Shaw’s Sergius from Arms and the Man (1894).

Plautus’ most significant influence, however, may be on popular, “low” forms. His mixture of lyricism and colloquialism suggests vaudeville and burlesque alongside Shakespeare and Molière. Along with Forum (1963), other Broadway mainstays such as Rodgers and Hart and Cole Porter have also adapted Plautus’ stories into musicals with shocking ease. In fact, scholars have cited Plautus’ use of canticum—songs, music and dance—as an early form of musical comedy. Burt Shevelove famously said that A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was a “scenario for vaudevillians.” He might as well have said: it is a play by Plautus.

The Academy for Classical Acting

On any given evening of theatre in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area, one is likely to see the inspiring work of actors of all ages who have graduated from the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s MFA in Classical Acting program, the Academy for Classical Acting (ACA), located at The George Washington University. Now in its 14th year, the ACA has trained 196 talented men and women to be the finest professional actors in the craft of classical acting. As indicated by Artistic Director Michael Kahn’s famous quote, “The actor who can perform the classics can perform anything,” and ACA alumni are enriching every kind of theatre experience, here and across the country.

Recent examples include Dawn Ursula (’07), appearing in the Arena Stage premiere of Love in Afghanistan, Kimberly Gilbert (’01) in The Laramie Project at Ford’s Theatre, Caitlin McColl (’12) in Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s Appropriate, and Elan Zafir (’13) in Signature Theatre’s upcoming

Tender Napalm. Last season: Stephanie LaVardera (’12) in Constellation Theatre’s world premiere of Zorro and Joel David Santner (’07) playing the title role in Gilgamesh, Brit Herring (’09) in Quotidian Theatre’s A Walk in the Woods, Jefferson Farber (’11) in Signature Theatre’s Shakespeare’s R&J and Alyssa Wilmoth-Keegan (’11) in Studio 2nd Theatre’s production of Contractions, just to name a few. Two grads, Matthew R. Wilson (’08) and Marcus Kyd (’01), have even gone on to found D.C. theatre companies of their own: Faction of Fools and Taffety Punk, respectively. Both companies are Helen Hayes Award recipients of the John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company.

ACA grads regularly grace the stages of those companies listed above, as well as the Folger Theatre, Everyman Theatre in Baltimore, the Kennedy Center and more than 240 other theatres across the United States. Not bad for a 14-year-old.
