Advent Advent is a time of waiting and preparation. It is a time when in the Christian church we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas. For most of us this period is marked by the busyness of the year, shopping, Christmas symbols, Christmas lights, Christmas carols and preparing for a day when most families come together to celebrate in love and peace. It is a time for kindness and special efforts. I hope that in this time of preparation for Christmas we can be mindful how Christmas can be a time to pause and appreciate life, family and friends. Our challenge is to not be subsumed by the busyness of work and other functions, to take time to be generous, to be kind to oneself and to recognise the importance of “Joy” that brings us together as families and communities. YEAR 9 REFLECTION DAYOn 6 December, Year 9 Reflection Day was held at Cardijn College. After a morning reflection on the Pope’s encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ and writing individual short messages to the Prime Minister about the current environmental crisis, the students engaged in a variety of activities which included creating pinch pots, nature collages, painting Environment Week banners and website design. These activities were accompanied by reflection, enthusiasm, team work, new ideas and a desire to make change on this issue in our community. Below is an example of the prayers written and shared amongst the Year 9 cohort at the day’s closing.

Tahlia Sully, YCS Coordinator Dear lord, Thank you for the wonderful opportunities that you have give to us today. Without the resources we were supplied with we would not have learnt about the change occurring in the world we live in. Please give us strength and courage to make change in the world and overcome our selfishness. We can all take the step towards change and harmony. Amen.

Staff Leaving the CollegeRegretfully several staff will be leaving us at the end of this year. Mr Matt Wadewitz has resigned from Cardijn to follow a new career in consultancy. Matt is an Old Scholar and joined the teaching staff just over 14 years ago. In that time, Matt has been a driving force in middle schooling being appointed as the Middle School Coordinator in 2008. He was appointed as Assistant Head of the Middle School in 2010 and Learning Environment Research Coordinator in 2012. It is his passion for excellence which has led him to use his experience and knowledge with coaching to a new career in consultancy. We extend a deep appreciation for Matt’s service and contribution to the life at Cardijn.

Mr Dzint Jurevicius has decided to retire from teaching after 20 years on the staff at Cardijn. Dzint wants to spend more time with his love of Art by opening his own Art gallery on the South Coast. Dzint is a much-loved Art teacher and House Leader of MacKillop House. He leaves the College knowing that his contribution to the life of MacKillop and Art students is greatly appreciated.

Mr Mariusz Sterna has accepted a position as Librarian at Cornerstone College. We are deeply indebted to Mariusz for his contribution to Cardijn and especially the Library. He transformed the old Library to a welcoming place for learning, changing the ambience with Art works and especially areas for reading. He was instrumental in the development of the new library and what we have come to enjoy as a centre piece at Cardijn. We wish him God’s blessing in his new role.

Mr Cameron Willis has accepted a position as Head of Sport at Westminster School. Cameron is well known for his excellent contribution to the development of Outdoor Education and more recently the establishment of the Cardijn AFL Football Academy. Cameron’s passion for the outdoors and especially AFL has inspired the success of many students in his care. We wish him well in his new role.

Ms Lisa Roe has accepted a position at Prince Alfred College. Lisa joined Cardijn as a Maths and Physics teacher following the completion of her studies at University. Lisa’s leadership, passion and deep interest in Maths and Numeracy resulted in her appointment as Curriculum Leader for Mathematics. Lisa has made a significant impact on the lives of her students and the life of Cardijn and we are going to miss her gentleness and steadfast commitment to our school.

Ms Charlie Thompson has accepted a position at St John’s Grammar. Charlie has been at Cardijn for a few years and in that time, has made a significant impact in the field of Drama. We have greatly appreciated her passion and innovative approaches to Drama and performance. We wish her well in her new role.

Ms Pernille Birt and Ms Lauren Edwards joined us at the start of 2016 in the Flexible Learning Centre and complete their contracts at the end of this year. They quickly developed outstanding rapport with their students and contributed to the loving care of students in the Centre. We are most grateful for their passion, commitment and contribution to the community.

Ms Nicki Jennison will also complete her contract at the end of this year. We thank Nicki for her commitment, dedication and passion in the Art and PE faculties.

We extend our gratitude to all staff who are leaving, each day of their service to Cardijn has been a blessing. Their commitment, professionalism and love for the school was always at the forefront of their work.

Finally, I acknowledge all staff who are deeply committed to the students, generous of their time, totally professional in their roles and loyal to the Charism of Joseph Cardijn. They are indeed the fabric that makes this community so successful. It has been a privilege to have been part of such a vibrant year, rich in faith, learning and community.

I extend warm wishes for a joyful Christmas and many blessings for 2017.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION

During the final weeks of Term 4, we had the privilege as College Captains to attend the Marist Youth Ministry Student Leaders Gathering in Victoria. This was a great opportunity to help develop our leadership skills and meet lots of student leaders from all over Australia. Over the course of three days we learnt about transformative leadership, engaging others in prayer and the characteristics of Marist Leadership. It was excellent to hear about the initiatives from students at other schools and share ideas of our own. We had lots of fun participating in team building activities where we developed our communication, problem solving and active listening skills. We worked together to overcome challenges and deepen our faith, whilst developing friendships that we know will be maintained despite our geographical separation. Overall, the camp was an incredible experience, where we gained skills and knowledge to bring to our College community in the coming year. Team Cheb are really excited for 2017 and you should be too!

YEAR 10 CANBERRA TRIPEarlier this year, the Year 10 students were addressed by a representative from the local police and then wrote an essay explaining how young drivers could be made safer on our roads. A judging panel was formed and three students, Aden Quinn, Lauren Woodward and Celeste Ryan, had the opportunity to attend the Christies Beach Blue Light Leadership Camp in Canberra due to the excellent quality of their essays. Lauren provided the following insight into the experience:On Monday 7 November, I and 15 other students from surrounding schools set off in a SAPOL bus to the airport ready to catch our flight to Canberra for a week of exciting adventures, new experiences, and many laughs. We had six days filled with racing around the city, visiting the National Science and Technology Centre, crying at the National Police Memorial and Remembrance Day service, visiting many lookouts, and much much more. The highlight was definitely climbing Mount Kosciusko and simply just meeting new and amazing people. This was an incredible experience that I will cherish and the things I learnt will forever guide me through life. Congratulations go to all the Year 10 students who took part in this year’s competition and particularly to Aden, Lauren and Celeste for their outstanding work.

In 2016 Year 9 Robotics participated in the Sumo Robot Challenge. We started building and programming our robots at the start of the semester. We all partnered up and started building our robots following instructions from Mindstorm Education. With hard work, our robots were built. We developed many different strategies for our robots along with many different techniques and thinking skills. It involved a lot of dedication to build and program the robot. The Sumo Challenge was a laugh. The robots were placed inside the circle facing towards each other and after five seconds, they started to wrestle. Many robots faced tough opponents, some bigger and stronger. But there were those who were faster and were programmed well. There were many robots with hard barriers. If the robot was pushed out of the circle or tipped over it lost the round. It was quite interesting to see the smaller robots beat the bigger robots, because you would assume it would be the opposite.

SUMO ROBOT CHALLENGE

MUSIC NEWSAbout this time of year I am inclined to think less about what has been or what’s to come and more about stopping to give thanks.Throughout a Music year we do so many things, but things do not happen without lots and lots of people in the background who support, teach, set up, pack up, lead and console as part of the process. On behalf of the Music Team I want to take time to thank you! Your help, whether it’s manual labour, technical, a kind word, cooking snags, picking music, dropping a child off or picking one up, cleaning uniforms or wading through the pages and pages of information and forms that are part of our day to day, means a great deal to us. When our students hear applause we are always mindful of those who are also deserving, who are happy to sit in the shadows of their children. For this we are thankful, as we begin this season of new beginnings and ponder 2017.It’s great to be thankful for the year of Music that was. You have all been a big part of that.

Go well, David Gauci and the Cardijn College Music Team!
