Agaves ‐ Luminaries of the LandscapeIn the landscape Agaves provide artistic structure and an element of theunexpected when complemented by softer companions. A perfect pairingincludes a colorful accent in one plant that pulls those same colors out in theother. The burnt red tips of 'Reggae Time' Cow Horn Agave (featured below)are highlighted by the fiery leaves of Phormium 'Maori Maiden'. This samevariety, as with many Agaves, becomes luminescent as the morning or

afternoon sun lights up its translucent leaves.
Finer textured, rounded, or low‐growing perennials and shrubs balance theboldness of Agaves with each contributing equally to the overall effect. Thelow‐water requirement of Ceanothus 'Diamond Heights', Rosmarinus 'Chef'sChoice', Salvia greggii and Tagetes lemmonnii, make excellent Agavecompanions.
Grouping plants by their water requirements, also known as hydrozoning, isbecoming an effective tool in the effort to reduce water usage in California. Indesigning such a landscape, Agaves provide the art and interest with which tobuild on. Agave ellemeetiana (featured below), Aeonium 'Kiwi' and Cordyline'Design‐A‐Line' are a beautiful combination aesthetically while they all preferlight shade in the warmer inland areas (full sun on the coast), with occasionalirrigation.
In addition to having very low water needs, Agaves tolerate most soils,provided there is good drainage, and rarely require fertilization. They are theultimate low maintenance plant. With that and all that they offer in design,Agaves are fast becoming popular luminaries of the landscape.

Agave ovatifolia 'Vanzie'
Smooth, powder‐blue leaves with a slightcupping. Grows in a rounded rosette. Veryfast growing. Common name ‐ Whale'sTongue.

Agave victoria 'Reginae'

A very unique and interesting small clumpingagave. Smooth, spinless leaves nestingcompactly into a tight clump. Slow growing.Looks attractive nestled in and around rocks.Makes a great container plant, too.

Agave americana 'Cornelius'
Small, clumping succulent that does notsucker. Excellent container plant. Combineswell with low‐water summer bloomingshrubs. Blue‐green leaves with bold yellowedges makes this very striking and noticeable.Common name is Quasimoto Agave.

Agave bovicornuta 'Reggae Time'
Attractive jade green leaves with an interesting show of brownish‐red teeth.Leaves are slightly cupped with a unique imprint from juvenile leaves onundersides. Away from the coast prefers partial shade.Height: 2‐3'Width: 3'‐4'

Agave applanata 'Cream Stripe'
Blue‐green leaves with attractive creamy‐whitemargin leading to a deep purple‐maroon tip.Excellent for a container. Slow growing. Displaysinteresting leaf pattern on reverse side ofunfurling leaves.
Height: 4" ‐ 6"Width: 6" ‐ 12"
Agave impressa
Attractive white markings on each leaf areformed by waxy deposits from younger leaveswhile forming. Fantastic landscape or potplants. Very drought tolerant.

Agave ellemeetiana
At first glance you might think this is anAgave attenuata: similar soft leaves and noteeth. The leaves on this variety are greener,shorter and wider than A. attenuata. Doesnot tolerate full sun in the inland areas.Prefers good drainage and little more waterthan others in this newsletter. Greatselection for tidy small areas or near pools.
