As the result of wasting a couple of hourswith this material you should be able to:

•Recognize the utility of non-diagnostic self report inventories. •Use inventories and assessment forms to facilitate the entire counseling process from rapport building to assessing the efficacy of treatment.

•Recognize the utility of survey instruments in small group counseling and classroom guidance activities.

•Leave with a handful of instruments with which to facilitate the counseling process and enhance client insight and self-understanding.

Be able to identify an extinct bird from New Zealand.

Psychopathology in Children(Still being validated)

The CAT TestThe task of identifying the forty percent of students who are emotionally disturbed is problematic due to the lack of a valid and reliable personality measure appropriate for this group. There is a need for a practical personality instrument which can be administered by psychiatrist, psychologist, teacher, aide, parent, or similarly trained individual. The CAT test was designed as an efficient, economical and ecological device to fill this void.

Page 32: Dean W. Owen, Jr., Ph.D., LPCC Professor of Counseling Middle East Technical University Ankara, Turkey Inventories, Assessments, Surveys, and Forms: Tools

The CAT Test

Materialsa. One empty room devoid of all destructive or potentially destructive instruments.b. One cat, in reasonable health, sans collar.

Administration Procedure

a. Place evaluation subject in empty room facing far wall.b. Toss cat into center of the room, close and latch door.c. After ten minutes, open the door.

Page 33: Dean W. Owen, Jr., Ph.D., LPCC Professor of Counseling Middle East Technical University Ankara, Turkey Inventories, Assessments, Surveys, and Forms: Tools

Psychopathology in Children(Still being validated)

Interpretation of ResultsIf after ten minutes of exposure to the evaluation subject, the cat is terminated and/or severely maimed, then the child is severely disturbed and requires immediate special class placement, institutionalization, or pre-frontal lobotomy.

The sensitive nature of the CAT test allows fine discrimination among subsets of emotional disturbance as categorized by the APA (DSM-IV/R) which can be obtained from any psychiatrist, psychologist, teacher aide, parent, or clinical graduate student. Sub-classifications of emotional disturbance are based on the condition of the feline and testee after the ten minute testing session, as follows:

Page 34: Dean W. Owen, Jr., Ph.D., LPCC Professor of Counseling Middle East Technical University Ankara, Turkey Inventories, Assessments, Surveys, and Forms: Tools

Psychopathology in Children(Still being validated)

1. Obsessive Compulsive: four neat, meticulous piles of fur to be found in the corners of the room...cat alive, but cold.

2. Socialized Delinquent: fur scattered randomly about room and on testee...cat alive, still cold.

3. Manic/Depressive (manic stage): pieces of cat scattered randomly about room...cat terminated.

4. Manic/Depressive (depressive stage): pieces of testee scattered randomly about room...emotional stability of cat suspect.

5. Paranoid Reaction: testee cowering in far corner of room...cat alive and sleeping in the center of the room.

6. Psychopathic Reaction: only evidence of cat is skin wrapped loosely about testee's head...cat assumed to be terminated.

7. Schizophrenic Reaction: testee in center of room carrying on a long existential conversation with cat. Cat alive but confused.

8. Neurotic Reaction: testee asking cat for advice about migraine headache-cat alive and still confused.

9. Catatonic Reaction: testee in corner of room with back arched, hair on end, hissing and refusing to acknowledge presence of cat...cat alive, confused, and sexually aroused.

General applicability

The CAT test can be administered by virtually anyone needing to classify disturbed children or eliminate cats. The test is particularly useful in urban communities where the basic test materials are readily accessible. Rural communities may utilize substitute materials (i.e., rabbits, mice, small dogs, etc.) with little or no loss of construct validity.

Conclusion1. The use of any psychometric instrument requires

appropriate training.

2. The widespread availability of pseudo-psychological tests means that care should be utilized in the selection and use of surveys and inventories with your client.

3. Avoid inferring and diagnostic or clinical judgment not justified by the instrument’s psychometric properties.

4. These tools can be easily used and are effective adjuncts in all counseling settings when selected and used with care and compassion.

5. Unlike many psychometric instruments in use today, the

purpose of these tools is not diagnostic but to enhance client self awareness….to provide structure and organization….to focus thought, concentration, judgment.
