Dealing with Earwax

Earwax is produced in the outer part of the ear

canal. You may hear earwax being referred to

as cerumen by medical professionals. It has a

lot of important functions.

Earwax helps to protect your eardrum and the

ear canal by giving them a waterproof lining. It helps to keep your ear dry

and prevent any germs from coming in to cause an infection. The earwax

also helps to trap any dust and dirt to keep them from coming into the

eardrum and causing any irritation.

Most of the time, you will not have to worry about having to do anything in

order to remove earwax from your ears. Regular bathing is normally

enough to be able to keep your earwax at a healthy level.

At Home Treatment for Earwax

If you’re having issues with pain in your ear and you notice earwax inside,

it is fine to take a washcloth and wipe around the outer part of the ear

canal. It is imperative that you refrain from using a cotton swab, a finger or

any other objects that could potentially poke the inside of your ear and

cause damage to the eardrum. You also don’t want to push the earwax

farther into the ear canal because in turn you could end up with an

infection.

Anytime you complain about pain and discomfort in your ears you should

talk with your doctor. There are a lot of over-the-counter medicines to help

remove earwax, but you need to consult with a doctor before using any of

them.
