WABCO is one of the world's leading manufacturers of electronic braking, vehicle control, suspension and drive systems for commercial vehicles. Customers include leading manufacturers of commercial vehicles and buses. Founded as the Westinghouse Air Brake Company in 1869 in the USA, WABCO was taken over by American Standard in 1968 and divested as an independent company in 2007. The company is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium and employs approximately 7,700 people in 31 countries across the world. WABCO's turnover in 2007 totalled US$2.4bn. WABCO is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the stock symbol WBC.

WABCO develops automotive components that increase driving comfort and im-prove performance. This makes the vehicle more reliable overall. 3 General Information

3.1 Product Identification

For authoritative product data please refer to the outline drawings, which are among the resources stored in INFORM, the online product catalogue.

Outline drawings

Open the www.wabco-auto.com website. Click on Product Catalogue INFORM => Product Number. In the search field, enter the 10-digit product number for the outline drawing you are looking for. Click the Start button.

Photos (e.g. in a catalogue) are not used for product identification because devices may look the same even though they belong to different number ranges. The 10-digit WABCO product number is used to unambiguously identify the device required for repairs, see chapter 4.1 "10 digit numbering system for WABCO products", page 11.

If a device's product number is no longer recognised: • The vehicle manufacturer might use the vehicle chassis number to provide in-

formation regarding the appropriate replacement. Vehicle manufacturers' prod-uct numbers may be recoded to WABCO product numbers by the WABCO online product catalogue INFORM.

• In some cases WABCO recognises vehicle-specific data and can provide fur-ther information. Speak to your WABCO partner.

• Another possibility is that there is a new vehicle brake calculation, on the basis of which the vehicle may be fitted with updated products and approved (service subject to charge). Please ask your WABCO contact for the "Technical Vehicle Data" specification documents.

Even where devices have the same product number, they may have different operating principles.

Electronic control units in particular are frequently produced universally and then configured for a particular application by the vehicle manufacturer. Replacing such a device is dependent upon having an appropriate configuration tool (diagnosis), systems training, and knowledge of the specific settings. Besides electronic control units, automatic load-dependent brake-power distribu-tors are also likely to require special adjustment.

3.3 Connections

Compressed air braking system connection devices are marked in accordance with DIN ISO 6786. The markings consist of a number containing a maximum of 2 digits.

Meaning of the second digit A second digit is then required when several similar connections, e.g.multi-circuit systems, are possible or available. The following digits are not available for free selection: 71 Antifreeze supply 72 Antifreeze return 81 Lubricating oil supply 82 Lubricating oil return 91 Coolant supply 92 Coolant return There is no distinction between multiple similar connections that are linked to one another within a device. They are given the same marking. If a port can be used for more than one function in one and the same instance of an installation, it must be marked by two (first) digits. These must be separated by a horizontal dash (-).

For fast ser-vice and a consistent standard of quality, WABCO maintains a comprehensive network of authorised workshops throughout Europe - with capabilities in the most up-to-date electronic systems. This includes all services such as diagnostics, in-stallation, repairs and maintenace, for all WABCO systems and products. It is stipulated in the relevant contracts that WABCO authorised workshops have the necessary equipment to perform the work properly and professionally. Commercial vehicle workshops can choose between two types of contract:

Service Centers offer a WABCO service for all types of vehicle, including han-

The most important criteria that WABCO authorised workshops must meet are: • up-to-date diagnostic equipment and software (updates via the Internet) • qualified and continually retrained workshop personnel • fast access to original WABCO parts • guaranteed use of original WABCO parts (WABCO products and systems are

obtained via authorised dealers).

Presentation Software

Open the www.wabco-auto.com website. Click on Service and support => Download center => Demo versions / Presentation programs. Click on the demo version you want to open or save. If you want to order the software, click on the Order link and enter the necessary details.

These programs have been used successfully in WABCO training courses for a long time and help to convey knowledge concerning multimedia technology for commercial vehicles. The software simulates the operating principles for WABCO systems used in vari-ous commercial vehicles and trailers. All significant operating states, processes, and error situations can be illustrated here. Using the full system as a point of de-parture, the user can drill down on each individual device. For this purpose, ani-mated interface illustrations of the unit in different operational and error situations, interactive characteristic curve diagrams, photographs of units in installed and dis-mantled states, plus wiring symbols have been added. The programs support multiple languages. Missing languages can be translated using an editor function.

In this chapter your customer is addressed directly and can obtain information on

how to handle the Diagnostic Software and Hardware.

Whereas previously a separate test device was required for the diagnosis of each system on the commercial vehicle, a PC or a laptop with the corresponding Diag-nostic Software is now sufficient for diagnosis.

PC Diagnosis comprises two types of diagnostics: • XD – WABCO Expert Diagnostics • SD – WABCO System Diagnostics Detailed information on the subject of diagnostics is contained in the "Diagnostics Hardware / Software" brochure.

8.1 XD – Expert Diagnostics

WABCO Expert Diagnostics (XD) is a universal tool that was designed for use in a workshop. It enables diagnosis of electronic systems in light- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, trailers and buses and, optionally, systems in passenger cars and motorcycles. Apart from passive functions such as reading out and clearing fault memories and displaying actual values, WABCO XD can also be used to perform active diagnosis. This includes, for example, a service reset and actuation of lamps and valves. Diagnostic connections can be established to control devices from reputable manu-facturers - installed in variously configured vehicles with various production dates.

Supported systems include, for example: • Engine control • Air suspension • Brake control • Gearbox control

Different XD packages are available depending on the requirements of the work-shop: Compact is based on a handheld tester, and Advanced and Premium pack-ages on a laptop with a vehicle interface. The Premium package includes a robust trolley with a preassembled docking station for the Toughbook. The necessary di-agnostic cables are kept in the cable cases. The Toughbook has an open operating system, so that it can be used for other workshop and office applications. The option of a wireless connection to the laptop is also provided. The operating system and Generic Software are already installed. In addition to the universal software, the complete package also includes a sub-scription for the WABCO system diagnosis or renewal of an existing subscription for one year. XD packages also include comprehensive WABCO service with on site support during first use, if required, help desk, hire and replacement service. The table on the next page provides an overview of the components of each option. The XD software can be downloaded from the Internet without access data. The XD hardware is activated via Smart Cards. These enable setup for a certain num-ber of updates or a specific period of validity for the diagnosis.

8.2 SD – Software Diagnostics

"Diagnostic Software" is the name for the system diagnostics developed exclu-sively for WABCO electronic systems.

For the diagnosis, you need either: • a PC or a laptop • the Diagnostic Software • a Diagnostics interface • and cables to match the vehicle type.

Diagnostic Software The speed at which vehicle technology advances, together with an expanding range of functions and intricate safety engineering, demands appropriate diagnos-tic software. WABCO provides diagnostic software for all WABCO electronic sys-tems in a variety of vehicles.

There are three ways to obtain the Diagnostic Software: • as a USB flash drive version (product number 446 301 XXX 0) • online as a one-off download (product number 246 301 XXX 0)

XXX stands for the available version of the Diagnostic Software in various lan-guages.

• as part of a WABCO Systems Diagnostics subscription. For diagnosis of multiple WABCO systems, WABCO offers four different Diagnostic Software subscriptions via the internet. These contain numerous diagnostic pro-grams for a very low price. The most recent version of the programs can be downloaded from the Internet at any time ready for immediate use. An advantage of the Diagnostic Software subscription is that WABCO can quickly inform you of new versions via email and that you can obtain any newly-developed Diagnostic Software at no extra cost. The graphic representation options provided by the PC make diagnosis look clear and structured. Thanks to detailed repair information and circuit diagrams with measured values, diagnosis and repair can be accomplished quickly and easily.

The Diagnostic Software can be used for diagnosis by any user. However, if pa-rameters need to be changed or calibration needs to be carried out, authorisation (PIN) is required.

Where do I find the WABCO Diagnostic Software?

Open the www.wabco-auto.com website. Click on WABCO Diagnostics => WABCO System Diagnostics => Download Soft-ware => Diagnostic Software. Here you can find an overview of the most important diagnostic programs. You can filter these according to criteria such as language or content of packages. You can download any of the programs you see, provided they are included in your WABCO Diagnostic Software subscription.

Where can I order the WABCO Diagnostic Software?

Open the www.wabco-auto.com website. Click on WABCO Diagnostics => WABCO System Diagnostics => Order. When you have completed the order form, click on the Continue button. You will then receive an email verifying your data followed by an invoice. Once payment is received, you will receive your personal access data (username and password).

How can I install the WABCO Diagnostic Software?

Open the www.wabco-auto.com website. Click on WABCO Diagnostics => WABCO System Diagnostics => Download Soft-ware => Diagnostic Software. Select the Diagnostic Software package you have ordered and your language. Click on the Show button. The download table is displayed. Select the Diagnostic Software you want from the download table by clicking on the program. The Connecting to www.wabco.info window appears. Enter the access data you received by email.

License agreement When installing a WABCO diagnostic program, the licence agreement is automati-cally displayed. You must accept the licence agreement if you want to install the program. You can also call up the licence agreement from the home page. A Diagnostic subscription usually lasts for one year. Before the year is up we will remind you to extend the contract. If you intend to install the Diagnostic Software on several computers, you will need to purchase additional licences. To install the software on an additional computer, copy the Diagnostic Software *.exe file that you downloaded from the Internet to the extra PC. You can now execute the program from this computer and install the Diagnostic Software. Activating the WABCO Diagnostic Software All WABCO diagnostic programs need to be activated. After installation, the pro-gram can be used without restriction for 10 days. After this period, it can no longer be operated without being activated. Every time the program is started, you are in-formed of how long the program can be used without activation. After activation, the Diagnostic Software is tied to the PC. This means the licence is used up. Therefore, only activate the Diagnostic Software on the PC on which it is meant to be used and not, for instance, on an office PC.

You have a number of options for requesting an activation code: • online• via WABCO Activation@Web• via fax.Extended authorisation (PIN)The Diagnostic Software can be used for diagnosis by any user. If parameters are to be changed however, authorisation (PIN) is required. This PIN is obtained by completing the relevant training course at the WABCO Academy, see chapter 6 "WABCO Academy", page 15. After participating in a relevant training course at the WABCO Academy, you can request a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for your WABCO Diagnostic Soft-ware from WABCO. This PIN is used to enable extended functions in the Diagnos-tic Software and change the settings in the electronic control units. You can obtain this PIN directly from the Internet, provided you have received a li-censing letter after completing an appropriate training program.

Obtaining PIN number with licence letter Open the www.wabco-auto.com website Click on WABCO diagnostics => WABCO system diagnostics => Pin for WABCO diagnostic Login with your licence number and the confirmation number on your licence letter (as password). Confirm that your personal data is correct or request a change. You receive a PIN for all programs and versions for which you have obtained a training certificate from WABCO.

WABCO produces brochures, posters and system descriptions to help you sell products and services. For example, you can furnish your sales room or counter with these posters. You can order publications using the 10-digit publication number. Please contact your WABCO partner to do so.

Price list A price list (with product numbers and gross prices) valid for one calendar year is produced and sent to end customers every December.

11 Return of factory conditioned units

For years WABCO has offered a wide range of economically priced factory condi-tioned units as replacements. You can tell the difference: WABCO product numbers for factory conditioned units end in a 7, new units in a 0, see chapter 4.1 "10 digit numbering system for WABCO products", page 11. WABCO is committed to reusing or disposing of parts appropriately. Old parts are properly recycled and partially re-introduced into the production process. A prerequisite for acquiring an economically priced reconditioned unit is that an old unit is returned when purchasing the replacement. On each purchase or sale, you (or your customers) agree to return the old unit. So we can keep to this procedure, we are paying close attention to returns quotas and will recall old units if necessary. We will also take old units from other manufacturers as long as they correspond to the product purchased from WABCO. You can help us make this important contribution to protecting the environment and behaving responsibly with global resources by helping us ensure that old units are returned in a proper manner. For this reason we ask you to send back to us any old units that customers have returned to you.
