    Max REGER (1873-1916)Reger: Clarinet Sonatas

    Michael Collins, Michael McHale

Michael Collins and Michael McHale here present a new volume in their exploration of the lyrical clarinet repertoire. Their journey through works that encapsulate the variety of nuance and colour of which the instrument is capable, inevitably led them to another great composer for the medium: Max Reger. The Brahms-influenced, essentially lyrical, and tender works recorded here contrast with the more familiar, contrapuntally rich – and loud – organ music usually associated with Reger. The three clarinet sonatas are among fourteen such duo works in his published output, composed between 1890 and 1915: effectively his entire compositional career. CHAN 10970

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809)‘Sun’ Quartets, Op. 20 Nos 4-6

    Chiaroscuro Quartet

The so-called ‘Sun’ quartets of Joseph Haydn’s Op. 20 are often said to represent an unprecedented flowering of his string quartet writing, establishing a high watermark to which every other subsequent composer of quartets has paid homage. On this second instalment, the last three quartets of the set are performed by the Chiaroscuro Quartet, an international ensemble formed in 2005 by the violinists Alina Ibragimova and Pablo Hernán Benedí, the Swedish violist Emilie Hörnlund and cellist Claire Thirion from France. Dubbed ‘a trailblazer for the authentic performance of High Classical chamber music’ in Gramophone, the quartet plays on gut strings, and the previous instalment was singled out as a recommended disc by The Strad: ‘period-instrument performances of the utmost subtlety and refinement’.

Erik SATIE (1866-1925)Noriko Ogawa plays Erik Satie on an 1890 Érard piano, Vol. 2Noriko Ogawa

Released in 2016 – the 150th anniversary of the birth of Erik Satie – the first volume of this series was warmly greeted by reviewers worldwide, who praised the clarity of Noriko Ogawa’s interpretations. Like its predecessor, this second instalment takes in music from different phases of the composer’s career, including the very early Three Sarabandes from 1887. A few years later Satie became involved with an esoteric society called ‘The Catholic Rosy Cross of the Temple and the Grail’ for which he composed works such as the Sonneries de la Rose+Croix. In 1913, during what is often termed his ‘humorous’ period he composed the four sets of children’s pieces (Enfantines) included on the disc.

Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750)Secular Cantatas, Vol. 8: ‘Celebratory Cantatas’Schleicht, spielende Wellen, und murmelt gelinde, BWV 206; Preise dein Glücke, gesegnetes Sachsen, BWV 215

Hana Blažíková, Hiroya Aoki, Charles Daniels, Roderick Williams, Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki

There is a close connection between the two works included on the eighth volume of Bach’s secular cantatas. Bach was asked to provide the musical entertainment for a celebration of the anniversary of Augustus’s ascension to the Polish throne, and consequently had to put aside the work he was busy composing – namely BWV 206 Schleicht, spielende Wellen – intended for a celebration of the King’s birthday on 7th October. The new cantata, Preise dein Glücke, gesegnetes Sachsen, BWV 215, is a substantial work, and it is combined here with the ‘Birthday Cantata’ that Bach had to put on hold.

Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975): Concerto No. 2 for cello and orchestra, Op. 126Bohuslav MARTINŮ (1890-1959): Concerto No. 2 for cello and orchestra, H 304Christian Poltéra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Gilbert Varga

Composed in 1966, Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2 is often regarded as a watershed work, heralding Shostakovich’s final stylistic period. The Op. 126 concerto has been, somewhat, overshadowed by its older, more accessible sibling, something that applies to the second work on this disc, albeit for different reasons. Having completed his Cello Concerto No. 2 in 1945, Bohuslav Martinů was unsuccessful in his attempts to interest a leading cellist in promoting it. When the composer reworked his first cello concerto in 1955, the new version effectively obliterated all traces of the 1945 concerto, which didn’t receive its first performance until 1965, six years after Martinů’s death. The present disc is a follow-up to Christian Poltéra’s critically acclaimed 2016 release.

Gabriel FAURÉ (1845-1924)The Music for Cello & PianoRomance, Op. 69; Papillon, Op. 77; Sérénade, Op. 98; Berceuse, Op. 16; Sonata No. 1 in D minor for cello and piano, Op. 109; Morceau de lecture (1897); Berceuse, Op. 56 No.1, from ‘Dolly; Sicilienne, Op. 78; Élégie, Op. 24; Sonata No. 2 in G minor for cello and piano, Op. 117; Andante for cello and harmonium (original version of Romance, Op. 69)

    Andreas Brantelid, Bengt Forsberg

In French music, Gabriel Fauré forms a link between Romanticism and modernism. This recording contains all of Fauré’s music for cello and piano, including the much-loved Élégie and Sicilienne – pieces that are sometimes described as ‘salon music’, with qualities that caused Debussy to dub the composer ‘the master of charms’. Interspersed with this lighter fare are also the two sonatas from Fauré’s later period when, suffering from increasing deafness, he developed a more pared-down style.

Brett DEAN (b. 1961): Dramatis personae for trumpet and orchestraLuca FRANCESCONI (b. 1956): Hard Pace, concerto for trumpet and orchestraHåkan Hardenberger, Gothenburg Symphony, John Storgårds

Brett Dean’s concerto Dramatis personae casts the soloist in the role of the ‘Hero’, albeit a complex one, with traits inspired by comic-book super heroes as well as the flawed heroes of literature and legend: ‘Soliloquy’, the second movement, is a reference to Hamlet, while Charlie Chaplin’s character in Modern Times has inspired the work’s finale, ‘The Accidental Revolutionary’. If there is a hero in the concerto by Luca Francesconi, it is Miles Davis; Hard Pace, is an allusion to a difficult journey. On the present recording the Gothenburg Symphony and conductor John Storgårds provide Håkan Hardenberger with expert support in these demanding, and rewarding, scores.

The Chemnitz Opera House has now made yet another valuable contribution to stage history with its revival of Hans Pfitzner’s Die Rose vom Liebesgarten (‘The Rose from the Garden of Love’). The romantic opera occupies a special place in Pfitzner’s oeuvre; as an impressionistic rendering of a text charged with symbolism, it holds a unique place in the annals of German music theatre.

Tobias Michael succeeded Johann Hermann Schein as the Music Director at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig in 1631, and Sebastian Knüpfer was Michael’s successor in this post in 1657. Michael’s extant oeuvre includes two volumes of motets and sacred concertos entitled Musicalische Seelenlust (1634-37), from which a selection is heard on this CD. Their style corresponds to that of the Venetian school – then very widespread in Germany – and they are presented here in renderings by seasoned interpreters the WESER‐RENAISSANCE led by Manfred Cordes.

Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791)Die Freimaurermusik Masonic Funeral Music KV 477 (Complete)

Jan Kobow, Maximilian Kiener, David Steffens, Salzburger Hofmusik, Wolfgang Brunner

During the last seven years of his life, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart seems to have developed friendships in the circle frequented by Viennese Free Masons that brought him emotional ties and intellectual sources of inspiration. Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music KV. 477 is one of his most concentrated works: during its mere sixty-nine measures the composition evolves from the opening sighing motifs in the despondent key of C minor, and dark wind colours to a more peaceful, serene and consoling conclusion.

Hendrik Andriessen’s Symphony No. 4 marks the absolute zenith of his oeuvre, and represents a perfect expression of his multifaceted artistic capabilities. As in the Symphonic Étude from the same year, here too the composer employs a twelve-tone melody in the interest of cyclical unity.

The featured works span practically the entire career of this great symphonic composer.

Hollow pathos is not his thing. From an artist like Mariss Jansons, Friedrich Schiller’s ode An die Freude has a far deeper significance, which fully encompasses the doubt and profound hope embodied in this text. On 27th October 2007, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks played Beethoven’s Ninth in the presence of the Pope in the Vatican. The recording of this memorable concert is now being re-released by BR Klassik.

This release showcases a gripping and profound performance, demonstrating Marie-Luise Hinrichs and her luminous, finely nuanced sound. The pianist herself writes: ‘Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater fascinated me from the very beginning. The music is so deeply moving that I made it a top priority to play it on the piano and to rewrite the music for this instrument’.

Jean SIBELIUS (1865-1957)Piano Works, Vol. 2Joseph Tong

As with the first CD that Tong recorded, the choice of repertoire has evolved not only from his exploration of the composer’s sizeable body of piano works, but also from a desire to select an attractive and varied combination of pieces. At the same time, he wanted to continue the natural process of combining large-scale works with shorter pieces (or sets of pieces); therefore he has chosen one of Sibelius’s most important large-scale piano works, the Sonata in F major, Op. 12 as well as one of his best-loved orchestral transcriptions, Valse triste.

Béla BARTÓK (1881-1945)The Complete Works for Solo Piano, Vol. 4; Bartók for ChildrenAndreas Bach

Bartók’s For Children series, although a pedagogical work, contains little pieces that were partly designed for concert performance. The version that Bartók prepared for publication in 1943 was in fact a revised, almost lightly translated version, one directed towards an international, first of all English and American public, unfamiliar with the history and folklore of Eastern Europe. It was finally published in this revised form in 1946, shortly after the composer’s death.

Ten Hundred DevilsKeyboard Sonatas by Domenico SCARLATTI

    Katia Braunschweiler

One of the greatest keyboard legacies of all was left by Domenico Scarlatti who, like Bach and Handel, was born in 1685. The music itself is more eloquent than words, particularly in a performance as masterful as the one offered by Swiss pianist Katia Braunschweiler in her Genuin Classics debut release. She serves up these miniature gems with great care, tonal beauty, and loving attention to detail – an ideal ambassador for the virtuoso and strikingly modern sonatas that tell of Scarlatti’s Italian homeland, and his love for his adopted home: Spain.

His debut release, appearing in the Genuin Classics ‘Primavera Edition’, reveals the winner of the 2016 Deutscher Musikwettbewerb to be a swinging, dynamic, and breathtakingly virtuoso musical force of nature. The works he presents here bear such titles as ‘pearls’, ‘Silhouettes’, and ‘The Liberation of Sisyphus’; crossing boundaries, expanding repertoire, and performed at a dizzyingly high level.

The elite choir is presenting its second recording of Rachmaninoff’s ‘Great Evening and Morning Praise’ to replace their award-winning 2002 version. In the following recording, some of which was recorded live in Weimar, he has turned to Richard Wagner’s Ring. He has once again selected the Weimar State Orchestra for this task, an ensemble whose history extends all the way back to the year 1491. In her thesis she showed that in 18th century Italy instrumental music was rehearsed with the aid of textual reflections – a method that, over time, was almost completely lost and is hardly practised today. This CD documents the tradition of the mutual interaction between vocal and instrumental music and makes this stimulating impetus audible.

More than 200 years after its premiere at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Martin Helmchen have congenially mastered the artistic challenge of Beethoven’s gemstone. Under Herbert Blomstedt’s sensitive direction, the soloists unite chamber musical intimacy together with virtuoso sophistication – and prove once again that the Triple Concerto is an unduly underestimated, much too rarely programmed masterpiece. Carson Cooman is many things musical – but above all a highly prolific composer of music in a wide variety of genres, from orchestral to song. The music here, tonal and accessible though never lacking in complex chromaticism, was all written either as a commission, or dedicated to a person who has known, worked with, or inspired the composer. Some works are overtly liturgical and all are endowed with a deep spirituality. The works are performed here on the organ of Notre-Dame de Saint-Omer.

First performed in French at the Paris Opera in 1867, Don Carlo is in many ways an amazingly innovative work. The opera seems to underline Verdi’s shift from the Manichean division between good and evil, which had been a clear, structural element of his dramaturgy up to that point in his career. Verdi radically revised the score in 1883, using an Italian libretto and reducing the opera from five acts to four. The popularity of Don Carlo has grown unremittingly ever since, with today’s critics almost unanimously recognising it as one of Verdi’s greatest masterpieces, an opera that continues to reveal new gems.
