François COUPERINL’Apothéose de Lully; Leçons de ténèbres

Arcangelo, Jonathan Cohen

L’Apothéose de Lully was Couperin’s homage to his great musical predecessor and depicts the elder composer’s elevation to Mount Parnassus (where he plays duets with the shade of Corelli and, with Apollo’s blessing, effects a reconciliation between the contrasting French and Italian styles of the day). The Leçons de ténèbres were written for performance in Holy Week and demand—and here receive from Katherine Watson and Anna Dennis—vocal artistry of the highest order.

Carl CZERNYPiano Concertos

Howard Shelley, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra

Active in every genre other than opera, Czerny is now remembered largely for the numerous piano studies he wrote as pedagogical aids. Which makes Howard Shelley’s advocacy of the three virtuoso works for piano and orchestra recorded here, two of them for the first time, all the more welcome: this is music that cannot fail to appeal.

Jean GUYOTTe Deum laudamus & other sacred music

Cinquecento Renaissance Vokal

Jean Guyot was another of the composers of the post-Josquin generation active in the Low Countries in the mid-sixteenth century. (He was also a priest, author and teacher, although the details of much of his life remain vague.) Cinquecento has previously explored his secular music (on Amorosi pensieri—CDA68053), but it was Guyot’s sacred music that was largely responsible for the high reputation he seemingly enjoyed in his lifetime. Cinquecento proves equally authoritative in both.

Fourteen tracks—one from each volume of Hyperion’s complete ‘Organ Fireworks’ series—combine to take the listener on a spectacular ‘world tour’ of the organs and repertoire championed by Christopher Herrick over the decades. Released in honour of his seventy-fifth birthday, this is a must for anyone yet to encounter these wonderfully life-affirming performances.

Luca Buratto

Hyperion is thrilled to welcome 2015 Honens Prize Laureate Luca Buratto to the label, a pianist whose ‘fiery imagination and finesse’ (Musical America) are perfectly suited to the demands of this all-Schumann programme. Despite its unassuming title, the Humoreske is no mere miniature but a full-scale piano cycle, very much on a par with the Davidsbündlertänze.

George ANTHEIL Orchestral Works, Vol. 1

Symphony No. 4 ‘1942’; Symphony No. 5 ‘Joyous’; Over the Plains (Premiere Recording)

BBC Philharmonic, John Storgårds

Alongside its ongoing and much-lauded Copland series, the BBC Philharmonic embarks on a new American journey, this time with its chief guest conductor, John Storgårds. Known as the ‘bad boy of music’, George Antheil began his career with a reputation as an enfant terrible, composing shockingly avant-garde works such as his ever-popular Ballet mécanique, inspired by the dynamism and dissonances of Stravinsky’s early ballets. Although he is well-established on the film music scene, too, it is his symphonic output – sampled here – that today survives in the concert hall.

Piano Sonata No. 11 in B flat major (Hob. XVI: 2); Piano Sonata No. 34 in D major (Hob. XVI: 33); Piano Sonata No. 35 in A flat major (Hob. XVI: 43); Piano Sonata No. 36 in C major (Hob. XVI: 21); Piano Sonata No. 43 in E flat major (Hob. XVI: 28)

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

This set opens with the most imposing of Haydn’s early sonatas, No. 11, and follows it with two lesser-known ones, both from the late 1770s, that were published without the composer’s approval: Nos 34 and 35. Each of Nos 36 and 43, the last two featured here, opens a new group of six sonatas, and a new world in Haydn’s compositional style. Future volumes will continue to explore the huge variety of style and expression found in Haydn’s sonatas.

Alec Frank-Gemmill, Alasdair Beatson

The present disc is a unique combination of recital and history lesson, with a young British team performing music from between 1800 and 1942 on no less than eight different historic instruments: four horns and four pianos. This gives us the opportunity to hear the works on instruments that the different composers would have recognized, whether Beethoven’s Sonata in F major (a natural horn from 1800 and a fortepiano from 1815) or the Villanelle by Paul Dukas from 1906 (an early twentieth-century cor à pistons and a Bechstein from 1898). Both notable performers on modern instruments, Alec Frank-Gemmill and Alasdair Beatson here revel in the sonic possibilities offered by the historic instruments with results that are as delighting as they are enlightening.

Franz Halász

Beginning his career as a folk singer, Carols Gardel is regarded as the creator of sung tango: tango canción. Lending its title to the present disc, Guitarra, guitarra mía was the last song Gardel recorded, shortly before he died in a plane crash in June 1935. Only months earlier, he had encountered a young boy that had a walk-on part in his last film – a striking coincidence, as the boy was Astor Piazzolla, alongside Gardel the most influential figure in the history of the tango. Himself a bandoneon player, Piazzolla often included the guitar in his ensembles, but did not compose for solo guitar until writing his Cinco Piezas in the 1980s, which closes this disc. On recent discs for BIS Franz Halász has impressed the critics to the point of winning a Latin Grammy Award in 2015.

Christian LINDBERG: The Erratic Dreams of Mr Grönstedt

Osvaldo GOLIJOV: The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the BlindEmil Jonason, Vamlingbo QuartetNorrköping Symphony Orchestra, Christian Lindberg

For his first disc on BIS, the Swedish clarinettist Emil Jonason has chosen to record a concerto written for him by his compatriot Christian Lindberg, composer, conductor and legendary trombonist. As Lindberg remarks in his own note on the work, the soloist was involved at all stages of the compositional process. But the Erratic Dreams are the composer’s own – as is the figure of Mr Grönstedt, the main character of those dreams, and of the six movements that make up the colourful score. Jonason combines this work with Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s work The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind. Golijov describes the movements of his work as being written in three of the different languages spoken by the Jewish people throughout its history: Aramaic, Yiddish (‘the rich and fragile language of a long exile’) and Hebrew.

Norrbotten NEO

Anders Eliasson truly began to find his own voice in the 80s with chamber works such as Notturno and Senza risposte. During the rest of Eliasson’s career it would be compositions for large forces that attracted the greatest attention, both in Sweden and abroad: from Symphony No. 1 (1986), which received the Nordic Council Music Prize, to the great oratorio Dante Anarca and Symphony No. 4, premièred by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Specialising in contemporary music, the seven members of Norrbotten NEO have devised a programme that includes the first recordings on CD of Notturno and the Trio for violin, vibraphone and piano, and at the same time offers the possibility of following a unique voice in contemporary music over the course of four decades.

The Grand Concertos for mixed instruments, Vol. 4

La Stagione Frankfurt, Michael Schneider

The press has decreed this unique series on CPO a ‘stylistically flawless and tonally beautiful interpretation’ of Telemann’s mixed concertos. The wealth of thematic invention and the subtle connections developed in the movements can hardly be described exhaustively. Telemann’s creed was: when melodic invention is exhausted, then one must pursue new harmonic paths – this CD demonstrates he was true to his word.

Carl Friedrich ABEL6 Symphonies, Op. VII

La Stagione Frankfurt, Michael Schneider

What makes Abel’s symphonies so unique among those of his contemporaries is not their first movements in what was later known as the sonata form or their last movements, which without exception are formed, usually in rondo structure, by dances of folk character like fast contredanses and minuets. Rather it is the slow middle movements, mostly with the heading Andante and frequently sempre piano in dynamics, which communicate a new and thoroughly individual musical language.

The Sixteen, Harry Christophers

Without doubt, Monteverdi was the greatest of the early baroque composers. He revolutionised the music of the theatre and the church with his dramatic and imaginative use of voices and instruments and with his daring harmonies and rhythms. Next to his Vespers of 1610, the Selva morale e spirituale of 1641 is his most significant and virtuosic collection of sacred music. This boxed set, released to celebrate Monteverdi’s 450th anniversary, includes all three volumes of The Sixteen’s celebrated recordings of the anthology.

This month the extensive and successful Röntgen edition recorded on CPO continues. This new disc demonstrates that Röntgen was the most imaginative composer living in Holland during the second half of the nineteenth century. Sextuor is a dramatic love story of the passion shared by a violin and a violoncello for a flute, and Tansman believed that here he had found ideal material for a ballet. And so it was: the work composed in 1923 was performed with great success and made the young composer famous. Although he suffered a great loss when his mother died in 1935, Tansman found the strength to write a larger theatrical work. The result was the ballet Bric à brac, also on this disc.

The Greek Passion

Various soloists, Choir & Extra Choir of the Graz Opera, Choir of the Graz University of the Arts, Graz Philharmonic Orchestra, Dirk Kaftan

The style of the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů was enriched by numerous influences that are reflected in The Greek Passion; magnificent choirs contrast vividly with intimate chamber music, and folkloristic elements are placed next to complex, classically worked-out orchestral movements. A highly emotional mixture of oratorio and dramatic opera takes the listener into a world in which catastrophes abound. Lorenzo Fioroni, who has directed operas in Nuremberg, Augsburg and Heidelberg, has produced this dramatic contest against fear in Graz.

Die schöne Magelone

15 Romanzen from Ludwig Tiecks ‘Magelone’, Op. 33

Nikolay Borchev, Boris Kusnezow

The most unknown of the 19th century’s great song cycles is a gripping adventure, and even more so when it is brought to life by the brilliant duo of baritone Nikolay Borchev and pianist Boris Kusnezow. This is the Genuin Classics debut release of the young, internationally-acclaimed singer. His clear diction, flowing musical lines, and great vocal beauty are ideally suited to Brahms’s tale of Romantic chivalry.

TriptychWorks by Amy BEACH, Natalie KLOUDA, Clara SCHUMANN

Monte Piano Trio

On their second Genuin Classics release, the young, multi-award-winning Monte Piano Trio from Frankfurt turns its attention to three great female composers. Amy Beach, Natalie Klouda (in a work commissioned by the Monte Piano Trio), and Clara Schumann wrote the compositions during three completely different phases of their lives. Nevertheless, each piece reveals beautiful Romantic sonorities that are captured in rich, full-bodied sound on this CD.

Rutter’s Magnificat for soprano soloist, choir, and orchestra was written in 1990. This re-issue of the original recording is due for release in May 2017.

The five prizewinning musicians bring together works that are connected to Bohemia in the broadest sense: ranging from the late Romantic sonorities of Josef Bohuslav Foerster to Alexander Zemlinsky’s feather-light Rondo, Leoš Janáček’s tale of youth, and the humorous and offbeat musical mini-dramas by the above-mentioned Pavel Haas.

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his opus 98 in 1816; musicologists commonly describe An die ferne Geliebte (‘To the Distant Beloved’) as the first ever song cycle. Franz Schubert wrote his Schwanengesang (‘Swan Song’) in 1828, the year of his death; the songs were posthumously made into a collection. Internationally renowned Greek baritone Giorgos Kanaris is accompanied in these two song cycles by American pianist Thomas Wise, a well-respected pedagogue, vocal coach and conductor.

The vitality of these three works by the Irish composer Jerome de Bromhead point to the sheer pleasure that their creator takes in writing music. The swirling ebullience of the tone-poem A Lay for a Light Year suggests the scale and energy of the cosmos. The edgy, elegiac lyricism of the Violin Concerto inhabits textures that are brittle and clear like Stravinsky’s. The more chromatic Second Symphony suggests a vast sense of space behind a glittering foreground of kaleidoscopic orchestral colours.

Donizetti’s operatic portrayal of Lucrezia Borgia is one of the most demanding roles for a soprano, and only such accomplished stars as Joan Sutherland have risen to the challenge. Lucrezia was notorious in Renaissance Ferrara as much for her beauty as for the political intrigue and suspicious deaths that surrounded her and her family. In John Copley’s production for the Royal Opera, Sutherland deftly captures the complexity of a powerful, vengeful woman, who is at the same time a loving mother.

Hugo WEISGALL: Sonata for Piano; Paul HINDEMITH: Ludus Tonalis

Martin Perry

Annotator Allan Kozinn writes: ‘if audiences listened as devotedly to contemporary piano scores as to the great works of the 17th through early 20th centuries, the two works Martin Perry plays here would be regarded as landmarks of the piano’s huge repertory. No doubt one day they will be – Paul Hindemith’s Ludus Tonalis has a constituency among discerning pianists and listeners; for many, Hugo Weisgall’s Sonata for Piano remains an undiscovered gem’. Martin Perry delivers intensely musical, brilliantly realized readings of these masterworks.

The second instalment of Jörg Widmann and the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s recordings of Felix Mendelssohn’s symphonies is devoted to what is known as the Fifth, in keeping with the upcoming celebrations to mark 500 years since the Reformation. In fact, from a chronological point of view, this is Mendelssohn’s second symphony, originally conceived to mark the celebrations of 300 years since the Augsburg Confession of 1530. This recording also marks a personal achievement of Jörg Widmann’s: to arrange for clarinet and piano one of his favourite pieces by the 15-year-old Mendelssohn. The Andante from the Sonata in E flat major of 1824 is performed in Widmann’s version for clarinet, string orchestra, harp and celesta.

Il Trovatore was always one of Herbert von Karajan‘s favourite operas. He conducted it at the very beginning of his career and his first studio recording in 1956 was made in Milan with Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano, but his Trovatore really made its mark in the legendary performances given at the Salzburg Festival in 1962, which formed the basis for this successful revival in Vienna. This 1978 performance is steeped in scandal. Franco Bonisolli was originally cast in the lead role but abandoned the cast during a rehearsal where the public had been admitted entry, and, after throwing his sword at the conductor, left the stage in fury, to be later replaced by Plácido Domingo.
